Hi! I am Cody.

Page 7: Designisms: Cody Thompson's Graphic Design Portfolio

I am an enthusiastic, thoughtful and honest designer interested in the world that encompasses identity and interaction design.

Page 8: Designisms: Cody Thompson's Graphic Design Portfolio

I was born and raised in Colorado. It is and always has been my home. When I am not playing music, designing, or trying to teach myself how to paint I love to head up to the mountains for a long hike or camping. I could not live without the crisp fresh air, crazy weather, or Illegal Petes. As my career progresses I hope for Colorado to remain my home.

Hard work is not just something that happens. Hard work comes from an innermost passion to do better, face challenges, and solve problems. To some it is an addiction.

Research, process, and functionality are the main factors that serve the success and build the foundation of any design solution. I always start my design process with rich research, sketches, and thoughtful studies before moving onto a final design.

Page 14: Designisms: Cody Thompson's Graphic Design Portfolio
Page 15: Designisms: Cody Thompson's Graphic Design Portfolio

This is my portfolio book that displays different projects that I have designed over the past few years.

This book also displays some of my thoughts on design through statements that I like to call “designisms.”

Page 16: Designisms: Cody Thompson's Graphic Design Portfolio

Design is making objects that reminisce with people who have never seen them before.Whether it is an advertisement, logo design,

branding project, package design, website,

or any other type of object that a person can

interact with, then it should create a unique

experience for the person who is interacting

with it. Logos are a quick and easy example of

how an object should remain in someone’s head.

If a company has a great logo, then it will more

than likely stand out from their competitors.

People will remember this company based

off the service they had at the company. By

remembering the company based off of the

service they had at the company, a person

may or may not decide to put trust into that

company. This is the magic that comes out

of a company’s brand.

Design is creating simple and direct systems that navigate people throughout life.

In today’s high paced society, people are

constantly traveling from one place to another.

A lot of these places are hard to find. Thousands

of streets lead to different towns, cities, states,

and even countries. Imagine navigating through

a 1,000 page book without any page numbers or

table of contents within it. Navigating through

the book would be nearly impossible. Design

can include forms of wayfinding so people can

navigate through life with more ease.

ignTrail Finder

Finding a way to a nice trail takes a lot of time. Websites always generate general locations for trails, and the descriptions of certain trails are not always accurate. Easily navigating to a trail should not be a task. Simple interactions on a mobile device would allow for a person to view different trails based on activities, trail type, trail difficulty, and trail location.

Trail Finder is a mobile application that makes the process of finding a trail for hiking, biking, and walking easy to do. It gives the user different trail options trails based off of where they currently are, where they might be headed to, trail type, trail difficulty, and many other options. The application also allows the user to hide trails, add favorites, share photos, and send directions to a trail to friends.

This application is successful in making the task of finding any type of trail simpler. The time involved in finding a good trail would be reduced. The hassle of trying to get to the trail would also much simpler.

Design is an in depth inquiry of research.

Research is one of the most important parts that informs any design project. Through research and strategic thinking a project’s concept, scope, voice, and overall idea can be defined.

His Life StoryOne of the most important parts of the design process is research. Without it a project cannot be defined, nor can it take a unique approach to separate itself from what has already been put out into the world.

The research process is vital to answering any questions that a project may present. It is also very valuable to refer to during a project. Referring to research while working on a project reinsures the projects directed path. His Life Story is a fiction based account of several nonfictional characters that were patients of the Jewish Consumptives Relief Society (JCRS).

While writing and designing the book it was always important to refer the research of the real people that the story is based upon to make sure that the characters within the story were reflecting upon the true characters from the research. The book uses imagery, page color, and typography as a means to guide the reader throughout the story.

Design is spreading knowledge about an unknown topic.

Many subjects within the world remain unknown to people. Certain diseases may only effect a small number of people. This causes for these types of diseases to have minimal research be performed on them.

So many different things occur in day to day life. Individuals are constantly stuck in the mode of their own particular interests, and even more engaged in their social life. It is difficult to get small informational messages about unknown topics out into the world. Tons of different outlets can reach people. Eye grabbing posters are just one of the ways that information can be passed onto people, but what if a whole wall of posters was designed to grab the attention of a passerby?

Faceblind Awareness is neurological condition that effects one out of every fifty people. Little research has been performed on the topic, not many people know about the disease, and they are very confused about what the condition is.

One out of every fifty people has prosopagnosia, yet some people don’t know that they have it. To spread the word about this rarely known condition, I decided to create twenty-four simple posters that illustrated the sameness within facial features, since people

Faceblind Awareness

who are faceblind cannot differentiate between different features of the face. Each poster is also weighted very symmetrically. This allows for each half face on a poster to flow into the face of another poster, creating a fun and inviting effect. Differing bright colors are used from poster to poster to keep viewers interested, and to define each poster as being different from the other posters.

People who view these poster and read the short messages on them will be enlightened about what being faceblind is like. They would also make a person who unknowingly has faceblindness realize that they have may this condition, which would provide neurologists with new research.

History

Symptoms of Prosopagnosia

Causes of Prosopagnosia

Reports of prosopagnosia date back to antiquity, but Bodamer’s report (1947) of two individuals was a landmark paper in that he extensively described the symptoms and declared it to be distinct from agnosia. He referred to their condition as prosopagnosia, which he coined by combining the Greek word for face (prosopon) with the medical term for recognition impairment (agnosia). Since that time, more than a hundred case reports have been published.

Everyone sometimes has trouble recognizing faces, and it is even more common for people to have trouble remembering other people’s names. Prosopagnosia is much more severe than these everyday problems that everyone experiences. Prosopagnosics often have difficulty recognizing people that they have encountered many times. In extreme cases, prosopagnosics have trouble recognizing even those people that they spend the most time with such as their spouses and their children.

One of the telltale signs of prosopagnosia is great reliance on non-facial information such as hair, gait, clothing, voice, and other information. Prosopagnosics also sometimes have difficulty imagining the facial appearance of acquaintances. One of the most common complaints of prosopagnosics is that they have trouble following the plot of television shows and movies, because they cannot keep track of the identity of the characters.

If you would like to assess your face recognition abilities, we currently have two tests of face recognition available. These tests include feedback on how your scores compare to the scores of people with normal face recognition.

Most of the cases of prosopagnosia that have been documented have been due to brain damage suffered after maturity from head trauma, stroke, and degenerative diseases. These are examples of acquired prosopagnosia: these individuals had normal face recognition abilities that were then impaired. It seems likely that more cases of acquired prosopagnosia have been published for two reasons. First, their impairment with faces is usually quite apparent to these individuals, because they have experienced normal face recognition in the past and so they quickly notice their impairment. Second, because these individual have had brain damage, they are in contact with medical doctors who have assessed their face recognition abilities. (Note that if you have experienced a noticeable decline in your face recognition abilities, you should contact a neurologist immediately. Any sudden decline may indicate the existence of a condition that needs immediate attention.)

In contrast, in cases of developmental prosopagnosia, the onset of prosopagnosia occurred prior to developing normal face recognition abilities (adult levels of face recognition are reached during teenage years). Developmental prosopagnosia has been used to refer to individuals whose prosopagnosia is genetic in nature, individuals who experienced brain damage prior to experience with faces (prenatal brain damage or immediate brain damage), and individuals who experienced brain damage or severe visual problems during childhood. However, these etiologies should be differentiated, because they are different paths to prosopagnosia and so probably result in different types of impairment; they could be referred to as genetic prosopagnosia, preexperiential prosopagnosia, and postexperiential prosopagnosia, respectively. In some cases, it may be difficult to determine the cause of prosopagnosia, but many times individuals will either know that family members are also prosopagnosic or be aware of potential incidents that may have resulted in brain damage.

Individuals with developmental prosopagnosia often do not realize that they are unable to recognize faces as well as others. Of course, they have never recognized faces normally so their impairment is not apparent to them. It is also difficult for them to notice, because individuals with normal face recognition rarely discuss their reliance on faces. As a result, there are a number of individuals who have not recognized their prosopagnosia until well into adulthood. We have been contacted by far more developmental prosopagnosics than acquired prosopagnosics, and so it may be that this condition is more common than acquired prosopagnosia.

“ The Minds Eye”Dr. Oliver Sacks has had prosopagnosia his whole life. He never noticed it. He also has severe place recognition agnosia and has wrote extensively about both disorders.

Check out Dr. Sacks’ blog to read a few of his stories here.

Explanations

There are a variety of explanations for prosopagnosia. Of course, all these explanations propose that the procedures necessary for normal face recognition are not working properly. However, the explanations differ in their characterization of the impaired procedures. It appears that prosopagnosia actually refers to a number of different types of impairments, so no one explanation will account for all cases of prosopagnosia.

Research

The primary reason that we have such a limited understanding of prosopagnosia is that few prosopagnosics have been intensively investigated. This is especially true for developmental prosopagnosia. Recently, however, the internet has made it much easier for researchers and prosopagnosia to make contact, and it seems likely that we will see an increased amount of research in the near future.

Research

There is no real treatment for prosopagnosia besides realizing that you may have the condition. From here the condition becomes something that is recognized and other little features on a person’s face, such as facial hair, glasses, a mole, or others may help a person recognize some faces. These are just helpful cues, and don’t always solve the problems of prosopagnosia.

Chuck Close PaintingsChuck Close is a painter who has developmental prosopagnosia, yet paints por-

traits. He paints reallistic figures which are formed out of small abstract paint-

ings. He is perfectly capable of painting photorealism too, but he cannot

recognize people by their faces.

Design is experimentation, and pulling inspiration from the environment.

Experimentation in design is necessary. Without it boundaries cannot be pushed to their limits, and new things cannot be explored. The environment may be used as an element to be warped into something different than what it previously was. Different elements from different environments may also have an influence over the designs that we create. These elements may be used as a direct source or an indirect source of inspiration for a project.

Typefaces are usually created to be legible and to add to an overall design aesthetic. Absence is a typeface that was created to test what legibility is by using solely angular line structures.

Absence is an experimental typeface that plays on the idea of typographic positives and negatives to create interesting shapes that become iconic. Influenced by the idea of digital alarm clocks and technology, Absence creates a very strong visual movement throughout its character set.

This typeface consists of only uppercase letters and numbers. Absence is a display typeface that is meant to be used as display text only, but it can also be used with caution at smaller point sizes.

Everywhere I go I see designed objects being used, which inevitably makes the design of those objects have a function. This doesn’t mean that the design is functional towards the objects purpose. It merely means that the design is there, and that it has not been considered. This type of design is everywhere within the world. It is one of the more interesting ignored things.

Design is meant to make things more functional.

Burton Jamesfine handcrafted furniture

Burton James is a company that specializes in custom and handmade furniture. Their furniture is one of a kind and very artful. It is shown across the country in top of the line furniture galleries.

One of the main problems that Burton James had was the lack of value that their previous website and identity had. It did not portray any aspects that the finished pieces of furniture portray. The user interaction within the website was also very difficult. Just to look through images of the furniture was a tedious task. There is no other way to describe it than a complete mess.

The design of the previous Burton James’ site had been used, and therefore had a function, but the design was not considered. Having the design of the website not be considered made the site dysfunctional. It also made the company seem less valuable.

A new logo was designed to make the company stand out from other high end furniture companies. This logo represents a new professionalism that the previous logo did not. The logo is also more inviting, balanced, and weighted making the mark more memorable than what it previously was. I also separates itself from the general monogram mark of other furniture makers.

The main goal when building this site was to bring Burton James onto the level of sophistication that their furniture lay on. Through designing more sensible interactions on the website, making the furniture very large on a white background as if it were in a gallery, and making the furniture one of the main things a viewer sees when they land on the site brought the companies online presence into a sophisticated and elegant realm.

Design is calling upon cultural elements to portray a visual story.

Most things that are designed have specific styles that are applied to them. These styles should always be determined when figuring out the tactics of a project. Style should never be chosen because it is popular, because it looks nice, or because other companies who have a particular design style have been successful.

A chosen design style should be determined through research, and it should be configured through process. This style should be used systematically and consistently throughout a companies design system. Everything that belongs to a specific company should be easily recognizable as that company’s material.

Grandma’s Villa100% homemade food

The packaging for a lot of food products can be very creative, yet only a small percentage of it actually is. Food products are also packaged very generically in regards to what the type of food is, or the culture that the food came from.

The design of food packaging is very limited to the shape of the common containers that the food has to be contained in. While researching food packaging, and how consumers decide to buy food, I found out that someone who is not entirely sure what brand they want to buy will usually pick up a package that visually appeals to them the most. My goal within creating this packaging system was to pick elements that could eventually be mixed together into a meal.

Grandma’s Villa is an Italian company that makes 100% homemade food off of their own villa. The design of the packages calls upon elements of the Italian culture. The color choice reflects on different colors that are used within the culture, and the pattern is something that is also from the culture. This makes the packages more authentic and true to the heritage of the culture. Most of the Grandma’s Villa packaging is made from materials that the villa uses to gather food. This helps make the materials used on the villa more sustainable, as well as gives off the appearance of the food being homemade.

Design is conceptual and handmade.

Print, motion, and interaction design is everywhere within the world. People commonly view these formats of design without giving them any thought. Most people do not consider the amount of work that a project takes, and that a project may use a ton of ideating, testing, and construction ideas. Every good design spawns from a number of ideas. Every good design is also made from skilled craftsmen who use their hands and minds to produce concepts and flush out great ideas.

Music TypographyMusic is an everyday part of people’s lives. It may be described as a sound or a set of sounds that are perceived to be pleasingly harmonious. Music can thus become a set of sounds derived from environments.

The photographs of this word were taken in different places where different noises are made in an environment. These places can be seen as having their own musical sounds and musical beats in nature. The decision to use a duo tone color process on each different poster was made to portray the different sounds made in different environments.

This project also explores the nostalgia of not having music appear as a prominent aspect of environments that have become isolated from everyday interactions with people.

The word in the image was hand made out of wood and various pieces of music equipment. The word may also be plugged into a power source, having the sound of the environment that surrounds it be amplified via microphone hooked up to an amp and speaker.

Design is creating outletsthat help educate people.

People struggle with learning things that are difficult, bland, and hard to grasp onto. They try their hardest to pay attention, but the relevance of the thing that they are learning about becomes entirely lost when it is actually studied. The amount that someone learns about something depends upon the topic, the particular person, and how the topic is taught.

Learning should be an experience that is more than just sitting in a classroom, reading books, writing papers, listening to lectures, and so on. Design can help make the learning experience of any subject more engaging.

We the PeopleThe US Constitution

The way that most people learn about the constitution involves a classroom, a book, writing papers, and memorizing certain parts of the constitution. This has made many people only remember certain parts of the constitution, and not truly know what laws the constitution has set in place. It has also made learning the constitution very dull and difficult. The current way that the constitution is portrayed to many people makes it a document that is non-living. People learn about it as a historical document. The document itself also sits behind a glass case that makes it seem inaccessible to many people

We the People is a concept website that revolves around the United States Constitution, and making the constitution more relevant. This website always present the document in the language that it was written by displaying it in the left hand column. The option to jump to certain sections of the Constitution is also constantly present. The website features a static header that includes a search bar allowing the user to search anything and receive results pertaining to the Constitution and its related media. One of the most important elements of the header is the live updates of tweets and current events that correspond to various articles and amendments.

These live updates would include articles, photos, and videos that people can instantly access in the header of the site.

Each section of the constitution has the option to view and add comments, which allows anyone to add thoughts and context to each part of the document. News articles, videos, and other media (current and historical) relating to the section can also be accessed, providing a constant relevance to the twenty-first century and historical information. High resolution images of the US Constitution are viewable from this website. Having these images gives people as much interaction as they possibly can with the document.

This entire website makes the interaction of the US Constitution a more engaging, relevant, and lively experience. It brings the document from being something that has been dull and inaccessible to most people, to being something that is relevantand living.

An abundance of designs nowadays have no clear and concise messaging systems to them. Posters around town inform people of concerts that are going to happen, but all of these posters look the same.

Posters or signs that tell people to recycle their trash are often overlooked because they have began to blend into their environment. Designs need to break this generic barrier of the sameness so they do not blend into the environment, causing their message to fail. Messages can be portrayed in a very simple format, but their visual content must be able to hold a viewers attention.

Design is about communicating an idea in a simple and concise message.

Ethical IssuesWhen designing messages, it may be hard to think about how to portray that message and grab a viewers attention. A message must be unique and have a specific voice to it. Without this voice the message will not succeed in being successful.

Victor Papanek’s “Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change” talk’s about how designer’s decisions tend to effect social and environmental factors within the world. I created this poster as a reflection of the book as well as a part of the design process that I see to be very significant when designing. This part of the design process involves thinking about how a particular finished design will effect the environment, other cultures, and ecology in the future.

The poster utilizes two statements that are meant to make a designer of any kind think about the statement while making their design decisions. The voice of the message and imagery on the poster is serious, which makes the poster speak to a person viewing it.

Design is establishing a company to have quality and value within their endeavors.

Designers are always thinking about how they can help their clients succeed in the real world. The designer should always want the consumer or user to come back to that site. If the user navigation in the site is horrible, then a person will probably never want to visit the site more then once.

The same kind of rules apply to branding a company. If a designer creates a great logo, the logo may be remembered. If there is no identity system or touch points to go along and communicate to the company’s audience, then the audience will more than likely spread their interest towards other products or services.

Health and Harmony

Health and Harmony is an individually focused, holistic healtht and wellness studio based out of Cherry Creek in Colorado. The company is already well-established, and it is lacking a strong brand and identity system in order to grow and differentiate itself from other companies within the industry.

This was a real client based project for a class. The class split into two groups to create two different design proposals for the company. Our group went through extensive company research, client and customer interviews, design ideation, collaboration, and design development. Everything that has been produced within this identity system accurately reflects the practices and philosophies that Health and Harmony has.

At the end each group from the class presented their identity system to the owner of Health and Harmony.
