Introduction to Queensland Standards
One over-arching standard that governs the way things are done:Queensland Government Information Security Classification Framework (QGISCF) and in particular principle 7 of that document.

Key points in Qld Health design
• Building and site lifespan – some in excess of 100 years
• Cat6A Shielded cabling is mandated• Redundancy is mandatory for:
– Patient safety– Business continuity

Key points in Qld Health ICTCSTD
Things that WILL happen• Projects must be audited for compliance
with standards at the project’s cost• Defects will be rectified at the offending
party’s cost

Key points in Qld Health ICTCSTD
Things that WON’T happen• Accepting a communications system that is
subject to interference or interruption e.g.– Incomplete or unstable power– Incomplete environmentals– Unsecured environments
• Acceptance of a communications system that is not fit for purpose.
• Impact is that any system that relies on the QH LAN environment cannot be commissioned until the room is complete.

Network convergence
News Flash!
The future of networking is here! We can have a single data network with all of our devices connected to it and save money.

Networked devices
The items considered suitable for convergence (but not limited to) arePCs, Laptops, WOWS, COWS, Printers, MFDs, Desk phones, Wireless Phones, Security systems, Fire panels, Nurse call, Duress, Paging (pocket), Servers, SANS, CT scanners, MRIs, Linear accelerators, Room booking systems, Temperature monitors, Temperature controllers, Energy management systems, HVAC systems, MATV (IPTV), CCTV cameras, CCTV servers and archivers, Video conference unitsand finallyThe 200,000 biomedical devices

Building Design Stages
5 key stages:• Master Planning• Sketch Design• Detailed Design• Tender• ConstructionThen there is • Discipline tendering• Final or last minute design

Murphy
Better known as the things that go pear shaped• Changing Timeframes• Updated Technologies• GFCs• Rapid changes in standards• Environmental effects• Final minute Design• Unmanaged Expectations• Inappropriate delegation• Lack of project management• Lack of understanding• The Stupid factor

A new concept for Design
To quote – never assume – it makes an ass out of u and me.
The customer must never assume that the supplier engaged to do the work knows everything
The supplier must never assume that the customer is uneducated or inexperienced.

Summary of the Design for Life
• A hospital environment is totally different from any other environment.
• At a hospital like RBWH:– One or more patients will be undergoing surgery
during any implementation– a new life will be coming into the world during any
implementation– The Emergency Department will have at least 20
patients– There will be almost 1000 patients in beds

Summary of the Design for Life
• The designer is responsible for getting the design correct.
• The designer, installer and the hospital are responsible and liable when things go wrong
• Consult with the correct stakeholders
• The post installation inspections are aligned to the Queensland Health ICTCSTD and approved exemptions, not necessarily the design presented by the designer.
• The QH ICTCSTD is the output of all specialist areas in Queensland Health.
