ELECTRICITY GRID STABILITY AS NEVER BEFORE!
The FutureFlow project is expanding its scope of operation of so-called secondary frequency control from purely conventional generation to Demand Response units and Distributed Generation, and will provide for the international performance of such activities.
With this goal in mind, the partners of the FutureFlow project are exploring new solutions for balancing the power system and managing flows in the European electricity network.
Consumers, equipped with state-of-the-art devices, are no longer just ordinary consumers, but can also produce electricity. Their potential is to become active players in power system security. Like guardians of the power system, contributing to the most challenging of all TSOs’ balancing services.
As a development project, FutureFlow will not remain solely on the level of scientific contributions. The results of its work will include prototype solutions which industry can apply in the real economy after the end of the project:
• Prototype platform for the aggregation of distributed generation and demand response: By means of a prototype aggregation solution and renewable generation forecasting techniques, flexibility providers – distributed generators (DG) and commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers providing demand response (DR) – will be able to provide products for balancing services. Retailers will act as flexibility aggregators and will pool resources in order to provide the products required by the TSO.
• Prototype of the regional balancing and redispatching platform: The main component of the prototype platform is the Common Activation Function (CAF), which is tailored to deal with congested borders and optimized for overcoming critical intra-regional barriers. The CAF is implemented as a cloud solution of a prototype Regional Balancing and Redispatching Platform, which makes research activities concerning cross-border integration flexible while linking with the aggregation solution.

The consortium, that encompasses 12 partners from 8 EU member states, is led by ELES, Slovenian transmission system operator. The consortium has all key competences along the value chain of the balancing markets: ancillary services control, demand response, distributed generation, system and AGC modelling and real test process.
