AUCTION

Stellenbosch Trail Fund

11 NOVEMBER 2015

The aim of the Stellenbosch Trail Fund is to create, improve and maintain all hiking, biking and running trails in and around Stellenbosch.

When the 2011 fires devastated the two existing single tracks in the

Jonkershoek Mountain Reserve, a small group of individuals initiated a project to restore, maintain and extend the trails across these magnificent mountains.

Testament to their success, the now extensive network of single tracks attract thousands of local and international mountain bikers, trail runners and hikers to the Stellenbosch area.

Jonkershoek Nature Reserve’s annual visitors alone increased by 64% to 46 000 day visitors (excluding the annual permit holders) from 2011 to 2013.

AIM OF THE FUND

Why the Stellenbosch Trail Fund?

If you enjoy using the Stellenbosch trails, support the Stellenbosch Trail Fund– big or small, any donations are very welcome. You will enjoy the benefits next time you are on the tracks.

Support us!

In addition to the pleasure they provide so many, they make an extensive contribution to the town’s attraction, providing employment and skills development opportunities and injecting valuable support for local businesses to thrive.

None of the work completed over the last few years would have been possible without funds raised through a few private donations and local fundraising events.

The trails are also subject to a huge amount of wear and tear by mountain bikers and environmental conditions.

The total of R312 013 raised in 2012/13

was fully invested into trail building for the benefit of all that use them. This included the installation of directional signage to enhance safety and drainage systems to limit erosion.

To raise further funds for this initiative, we have again collaborated with well-known artists and businesses to bring you this stunning collection of art and a collection of items in this Auction.

The STF approached the Stellenbosch Municipality in 2014 for permission to clean up the Eerste River

and the adjoining trails between Koloniesland and the R44 bridge. Permission was granted to pursue this project.

The project is going well and is done in collaboration with the River Committee, the University of Stellenbosch, the Stellenbosch Municipality, local businesses and local residents.

STF employs 4 part-time workers for this project. The river and adjoining areas are significantly cleaner and safer, but there still remains a lot of work to be done before the short term objectives are met.

The aim is for this project to be self-sufficient. At present, labour is supplied by some local residents and the STF funded appointees. The STF also receives local funding from certain local inhabitants. These funds are ring-fenced for the Eerste River project. Formal plans have been given to local residents, the University and the Stellenbosch Municipality for consideration.

Ros Koch is a British artist who lives and works in

Stellenbosch. The diversity of her art reflects her own journey in life. She is inspired both by people

and places. And her love of learning and experimentation can be seen in the variety of mediums and techniques that she uses to document her life and surroundings.Ros has once again created a

work of art specifically for this fundraiser.

It is a view of the majestic Stellenbosch Mountain, as seen from the koppie midway down the G Spot cycle track - a favourite spot for many walkers, runners and cyclists.

“The Stellenbosch Trail Fund is a great initiative, and it’s a privilege to be able to support it by doing what I love most: I paint and I use these trails every day. They are my pathway to, and through, nature anduntamed beauty; my return to the wild

www.strijdom.com Strjidom van der Merwe

Strijdom resides in Stellenbosch, South Africa. As a land artist, he

generally uses the materials as found on a chosen site. These sculptural forms take shape in relation to the landscape.

It is a process of working with the natural environment/world by using what is found on site and then shaping these elements into geometrical forms until it gradually integrates with the natural environment again.

Depending on the purpose of the exhibition or the commission the artist will also use materials that is brought in to the landscape in order the make a statement about our

relationship with the land, in many of these works the installation is not permanent but only functional for the duration of a certain event.

Exhibitions and commissions on invitation were done in South Korea, Turkey, Belgium, France, Sweden, Lithuania, Japan, USA, Australia, Germany, Kenya, England the Netherlands, USA, Italy, Finland, Malta, Belgium and Norway.

He held many personal exhibitions in various art galleries in the past years and his work has been bought by numerous private and public collectors locally and abroad.

“My work is often very ‘free’ in the sense that I respond to nature within the context of nature having a bigger impact on you, than you on nature.”

Smit lives and works in Somerset West. He is best known for his contemporary

portraiture executed through monumental canvasses and sculptures and has been exhibiting locally and internationally for nearly 10 years.

He exhibits regularly on solo shows and is considered one of SA’s youngest investment artists. Smit’s popularity is indeed growing on a global scale, with a highlight being the use of an image of his for the cover of a Christie’s auction catalogue in London.

This piece of work on the auction sold for three times the reserve price.

Lionel Smitwww.lionelsmit.com

Jacques Marais jacquesmarais.co.za

He has always been lucky enough to be able to get

himself to the right place at the right time by venturing off the beaten track in search of the perfect shot.

Photography has been a hobby for as long as he can remember. His Dad was always shooting sunrises and sunsets and sharing the images with the family in regular family sideshow evenings.

The arrival of digital cameras then really opened up the world of photography to him, and he quickly got the

nickname “Tommy Tourist” because of his constant pointing and shooting.

He differentiates himself by focusing on the sharp end of events, telling the story visually and capturing the moments as the action unfolds. He is driven by the combination of the adrenaline of chasing the leaders, dealing with top international athletes, and the adventure of just getting into the (often remote) locations to get the right shot. Bartinney

The boutique private cellar produces three main cultivars,

Sauvignon Blanc (3.23ha), Chardonnay (2.96ha) and Cabernet Sauvignon (12ha). The white cultivars are planted on the higher North and North East facing slopes while the red grows on the slightly lower foothills. High altitude viticulture

with elevations up to 550m above sea level combined with extreme slopes of up to 45 degrees requires that they tend to the vines by hand.

Wine making is a craft after all. Soils consist mostly of high potential deep red, well-drained soils on the mid slopes with red, stony soils on the higher slopes.

Thelema

We do not buy in any grapes and all wines are bottled

on the estate to maintain absolute control over every aspect of the wine production. The terroir in combination with Gyles Webb’s wine making style result in flavourful, flamboyant, complex and long-lasting wines with a distinctive South African character.

In 2000, Gyles moved into the role of cellar master and handed over the winemaking duties to the talented Rudi Schultz (one of the famous Schultz winemaking brothers). We hope you enjoy our wines and it would be a pleasure to welcome you at Thelema for a chat and a taste of our latest release.

Marklew

The 45 hectares of vineyards are cultivated in dry land

conditions on wonderful deep red soil in the prestigious Simonsberg Ward, Stellenbosch, arguably the premier wine producing area in South Africa.

Using an ancient and gentle wine making technique and at no time are the juices agitated or stressed by pumping over for extraction. All the wine techniques are the gentlest and most sympathetic possible. The

juices are gravity fed into concrete holding tanks below the fermenters and the skins are given a light pressing. The wine is then stored in a special selection of French and American 300 liter oak barrels where the secondary or malolatic fermentation will take place.

The wine will remain in the wood for about 12 – 22 months after which it will be bottled under the family name – MARKLEW.

Tokara

TOKARA is a picture perfect destination which offers

visitors a unique combination of award-winning wines, brandy and olive oils, a gallery of fine art, a restaurant featuring one of South Africa’s leading chefs as well as a delicatessen.

TOKARA prides itself on making wines that are site specific. Even though vineyards were initially planted on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain at the Stellenbosch property, two other farms, Highlands in the Elgin district and Siberia in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus,

were additionally acquired. In doing so TOKARA is able to produce wines which express the distinct characteristics of these three prime wine producing regions.

The wine production and marketing facility was designed to reflect the character of the wines themselves – innovative and distinctive. Spaces interact efficiently, with practicality being a core element. The winery’s operational layout incorporates cutting-edge technologies and computerised control systems to ensure all TOKARA wines meet the necessary standards of excellence.

Miles Mossop Wines

A magnum of Miles Mossop’s internationally acclaimed Bordeaux blend ‘Max’ which has a 5* Platter rating

Contact us+27 21 808 5900EMAIL: [email protected]

Miles Mossop Wines burst onto the scene in 2004 when the first wines were made: Max 2004 and Sakia 2004. Max is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon,

Merlot, Petit Verdot and more recently Malbec, and Saskia, a blend of Chenin blanc, Viognier and more recently Clairette blanche. Later, in 2009, a third wine was introduced, the Kika 2009, a botrytised wine made in the Noble Late Harvest style from 100% Chenin blanc.

It is a family business with Miles Mossop (winemaker at Tokara winery) as winemaker and viticulturist. The wines are named after Miles and Samantha Mossop’s three children, Saskia-Jo, Maximilian and Kika. Production is limited to 1,000 nine liter cases which results in approximately 475 cases of Max, 475 cases of Sakia and 50 cases of Kika.

We aim to achieve wines with finesse and elegance but still showing aspects of power and fruit concentration, having great texture while maintaining balance. These are truly handcrafted wines showing pure fruit expression and, more importantly, a sense of place.
