DESIGN SUMMER COURSES ACROSS EUROPEDesign your creative summer!

Do you have a passion for art and design? Do you want to spend time in Europe’s most exciting cities? Now you can do both at the same time—with the summer courses offered by Laureate European design schools!

In these two-week intensive workshops, you will explore your chosen subject through a mix of lectures, study trips, and project work, under the guidance of renowned professionals in the field .

Each summer course focuses on one of the contemporary creative industries, from fashion design to product design, from architecture to graphic design .

They are offered in a variety of levels—so whether you are a high school student thinking about your future, or a professional looking to specialize in a particular field of design, we have a course for you .

The courses are provided by the network of Laureate European design universities, with campuses in Madrid, Milan, Lisbon, and Berlin . You will explore the creative side of some of Europe’s most vibrant capitals, through site visits and project collaborations with selected studios, showrooms, design companies, and museums .

PRODUCT DESIGN I* NABA MILAN

You will be introduced and exposed to the design process in order to understand what is living behind a product . You will have the opportunity to delve into intensive project work geared towards creative thinking and exploring form and function . You will be working in small groups with other students, in an open discussion environment, developing your creative process from the idea to a final presentation . The final result will be presented, simulating a small exhibition, with a model and a short story in digital format .

PRODUCT DESIGN I UEM MADRID

A sun shade for Madrid Rio This course will introduce you to product design and to its related creative methodologies, through a project-based learning approach . During the first week, you will discover Madrid’s key design locations and learn to generate, develop, and defend your design ideas . You will hone your skills with the use of simple tools to represent your ideas, from freehand drawings to block models . During your second week, you will experiment with your own hands, using basic design materials and fabrication techniques to produce designs and small models for a real project: an urban sun shade that will be installed in the Madrid Rio urban park to protect pedestrians from the summer sun and heat .

GLOBAL DESIGN I IADE LISBON

Designer as a thinker for products and visual objects If you want to sharpen your skills in creative thinking and solving problems of form and function, check out this course . You will learn about the thought process and creative research that goes into creating a design object . Through intensive project work that draws on both communication and product design, you will begin to develop impactful visual content and functional objects . You will learn basic principles of design thinking, creative research, and design methodology in the fields of visual design and product design . To gain creative inspiration, your class will explore Lisbon’s cultural scene and museums, including the Design Museum and the Cultural Centre of Belém . You will also experiment with design techniques in IADE’s laboratories (3D lab, print lab, and media lab), to make your ideas come to life .

PRODUCT DESIGN II NABA MILAN

You will develop a coordinated product line using hand or digital drawing as well as a prototype product model . The project will be carried out in groups as a studio work, under the supervision of an established designer in an open discussion . Specific workshops focused on materials, history of design and on the biography of an object will expose you to multiple possible approaches .

PRODUCT DESIGN II UEM MADRID

Digital fabrication applications in design In this course, you will have the chance to effectively realize design prototypes through a variety of digital fabrication tools, from laser cutters to 3D printers . Under the guidance of expert professors, you will experiment with using a variety of machines for digital fabrication . You will visit outstanding design studios and institutions, such as the MediaLab Prado and the Universidad Europea de Madrid FabLab . You will have the chance to create your own objects at the FabLab, which is part of the MIT FabLab global network and one of the best-equipped and most dynamic digital fabrication labs in Spain .

LIGHTING DESIGN NABA MILAN

The course gives an overall vision of the art of lighting and its related functions from a technical and stylistic point of view . It will provide you with the tools to carry out a lighting project in a wide variety of different spaces . Lectures will deal with the subject of light and design both in theory and in practical terms . You will be expected to produce sketches and technical drawings .

Introduction to architecture This course will introduce you to the world of architecture through the use of sketching and handmade model-making as basic analog tools for architectural projects . You will learn basic freehand sketching to develop your skills with observation and perception, using Madrid’s historic and modern buildings as models . You will also develop simple volumetric architectural models as you begin to explore the nature of built environments .

INTERIOR DESIGN I* NABA MILAN

A full immersion course that will provide you with an overview of the Italian design methodology . You will be introduced to the analysis of the elements of the space, and will have the opportunity to focus specifically on interior design, and delve into intensive project works . Relying on Milan lifestyle, art and design research, you will be able to develop an interior space plan .

Gourmet architecture: an initiation into restaurant design In this course, you’ll explore the design of successful restaurants, deepening your understanding of the key aesthetic, functional, and operational aspects of leisure space design . Starting with a guided exploration of Madrid’s vast culinary landscape, with its more than 3,000 restaurants, you will analyze what it takes to design a successful restaurant . You will then put your learning into practice on real-world projects, under the guidance of leading professionals .

IIn this course, intended for students with background understanding and experience in Interior Design, you will have the chance to analyze contemporary interior spaces through observation based on personal research . You will develop a professional designer’s attitude searching for materials as a source for inspiration through the city exploration . Throughout this intensive course, you will gain knowledge of the different visual communication concepts and tools . You will be guided through a path marked by theoretical lessons and practical exercises in order to learn digital skills and the methods of the visual representation . At the end of the course you will be able to find your own visual style and will learn how to develop your own personal project .

Out of the box: an alternative introduction to graphic design essentials This course will immerse you in the theoretical fundamentals and the creative process of graphic design . We will explore the process of image-making with an emphasis on typography and composition . Moving rapidly through research and idea generation, you will then delve into the complexity of graphic design practice, where typography, image, and visual hierarchies dance with each other to say something both meaningful and visually engaging .

GRAPHIC DESIGN II BTK BERLIN

A designer’s guide to urban art This course will give you the opportunity to develop your own visual language for urban art, through understanding and experimenting with graffiti, one of its most iconic expressions . As wild, anarchic, and cutting-edge as it might appear, graffiti writing has its roots in clearly defined typography strategies that, over decades, have become more and more stylistically diverse: distorting, inventing new letters, and applying them to various surfaces and contexts, graffiti created a new communication form in public space .

Throughout this intensive course, we will widen your elementary knowledge of photography, introducing you to a higher level in use of techniques and materials . The course will range from the basics of optics and light (aperture, shutter speed, exposure), working procedures and photographic methods to a more in depth journey through the language (composition techniques) . The first part of this course will be devoted to gaining a basic knowledge of the available materials and structures and learning to make informed and responsible choices . Having learned what is necessary to make a textile do its job from a practical perspective, the course will then focus on the aesthetic considerations covering the fields of manipulation, surface design (printing and embroidery) and nets/lacelike fabrics (cut work, devoré) . You will then choose a specific situation for which to design a textile based on the previously acquired information and skills and produce a mini project outlining the reasons for your choices and illustrating this with samples .

Visits to art galleries are also included in the program, to allow you practice copying from the old masters . Different tools will be explored, from the simple pencil and color pencils, to conté crayon, china, pen, charcoal, and so on .

FOOD DESIGN NABA MILAN

Food Design is the pre-ordination of everything having to do with food, in terms of design, style and planning . It is tied both to industrial production and classic design (packaging, shape, color of the food), as well as to a cultural and visual element . You will analyze from an aesthetic, communicative and representative point of view through forms, colors and combinations of flavors and smells . The course will consist of lectures, visits to concept stores and brief design workshops . You will be then asked to create a final project .

CREDITS ISSUINGUpon successful completion of each two-week summer course (45 hours of classes), 3 ECTS credits will be issued that can be transferred at the option of your home university or academy .

If you would like to receive credits for the summer course, you should request the Summer Courses syllabi in advance from the school hosting the course . Submit the syllabi to your home university so administrators can verify whether they will recognize the credits in their curriculum .

To be eligible for ECTS credits issuing, you must be over 18, have completed your high school studies and be already enrolled in a university study path, meet the admission requirements of the course, and achieve the course’s learning objectives and outcomes .
