WELCOME

I started very young knowing that I wasinterested in all the “arty” areas. Loving to draw and paint and as I grew up it stayed with me. I loved painting and was really getting into it, but then found my love in graphics. I started going more into the photography side of things and adjusting photos in photoshop.

I was very basic in this area as we didn’t have the adobe suite at school so I couldn’t learn much, I was self tought on most of the programs. Wanting to benefit myself more I tried hard in my year 12 graphics and was able to go to tafe and study for a Bachelor of Graphic Design. This lasted two years, but I did learn so much more than I thought. When I finished Tafe I felt like I could do more so I signed up for a Bachelor in Graphic Arts at University. Now in my second last year, I have learnt even more than before (which I thought couldn’t be possible) but you are forever learning in this area, I feel I have grown so much more and am now confident with my designs. I now do Web Design, Print, Illustration, Graphic Design and want to further my knowledge in mixed media (eg. flashplayers) as I feel that is the way the industry is headed.

I have recently purchased my first home and have had that for about a year, I work a full time job in the printing Industry and love seeing all the different clients that come in. I also work two other jobs in retail and loving that also. I feel it is important to have some difference in your week.

Most of my inspiration comes from Alexia Sinclair. She is a Digital Artist and my Idol. The work she does is amazing and flawless, this is what I want to work towards.

I am Danielle and my life path has woven a path, that I would not change. Although I did

sporting and creative achievements, giving me the determination and dedication to keep work-ing and trying at school. I completed my HSC in

where I wanted to continue my study, as I had been offered positions at The University of west-ern Sydney to study BA of Arts, specializing in Set and Costume Design, East Sydney TAFE to study Fashion Design and Illustration, and also a posi-tion at The White House School of Design to study Fashion Design and Illustration. I accepted the position at the Whitehouse School of Design and graduated in 1993 with a credit grade. I com-menced a full time position as an Illustrator at Loveable Sleepwear, before we had even had our graduation in 1993. This then lead to a path of Illustrator, Design Assistant, a free lance busi-

clerical work, that then landed me with Mambo in the role of Local Production Manager, before I left on Maternity Leave. This lead to a turn in my life path, where I went back to Teaching Swim-ming at the local pool that I competed in as a child, while working as a Teacher’s Aide at the primary school that I started my journey at 20 years before. I continued teaching Swimming at the local Pool for the next ten years, while my three children were small, before leaving the pool to return to the fashion industry. I found my return to the fashion industry, and the hours that it entailed no longer suited my life style and left for a position as a Teachers Aide at a Secondary School. I found this enjoyable and that I had a skill to connect with and teach students and de-cided to commence the journey to become a Teacher. I started my Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) at Charles Sturt University by distance education in 2008, while still working as a Teach-ers Aide, with the aim of following up with a Di-ploma of Education and becoming a Teacher. So in the answer to the Question Who is Dani-elle... today I am a mother of three, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a Teachers Aide and a student who aims to keep healthy, give my kids every opportunity I can, to better my skills so I can make both my and my families life easier.

About Me

Always turing always floating to the top

Hi my name is Lesley Abarca, this is my 4thyear studying at Charles Sturt University. I’m currently studying a double degree in photography and graphic design.

I like finding different creative methods in creating new works. For my design Tennis works each week I wanted to try something different whilst creating the pieces in order to challenge myself and see what I could create. Whenever possible I used my own images within the desigin, either as the main focal point or as a tool in which I layer built open to create my works.

I enjoy reading and whenever I can I havemy head burried within a book.

A DAY AT A T I M E

What Is Layer Tennis?Welcome to our first game of Layer Tennis. Matches are played using photos, type, vectors, paintings and lots more, but the basic idea is the same no matter what tools are in use. Two competitors swap a file back and forth, adding to and embellishing the work. Each artist gets a day to complete a “volley” and then we pass it on.

Each work is also required to have a write up consisting of why they have chosen what they did and what they thought of their own work.

Our match has lasted for four volleys read on and see for yourself!

BACK AND FORTH:

Page 14: Design Tennis Magazine

The issue I wanted to bring across was social media and Internet bullying. I feel that social media such as twitter and face book gives people the means to voice their opinion, even if it completely wrong. Death threats, harassment and other horrible things can happen on the Internet, which would never happen in person (well in most cases). I feel that society is falling into this trap of voicing opinions and thinking that it is so important that they will do anything to get attention.

I am very passionate about this issue and feel that more should be done to help peo-ple, lives have been lost from bullying and harassment, stalking has even risen in the last couple of years.

I felt I wanted to make my piece fun but also serious. I love Illustration, so I came up with the idea that the Bytes have taken a stand and are sick of doing what they are told by humans.

I wanted to make it colourful and strong, so I have used a lot of gradients. I have tried to keep the detail of the robots as clear as possible so that they stand out also. I felt that I needed to add the face book and the twitter logos getting broken to represent the social media sites and they want it to stop. They weren’t in there to begin with. There is not a lot of font, which is how I did want the design, as I feel it should be incorporated into the piece somehow, not quite such as a heading.

me thinking. The complexity of the design

happening, It is a busy design. In saying that the design is busy, it also very engaging, and kept my attention for quiet a while.

Kayla had mentioned trolling, so I decided

the word: Trolling is the extensive posting on sites, mainly social networking and forums/blogs, of irrelevant and most times silly things.

So I took off with this idea, keeping in mind I needed to keep 30% of Kayla’s work, and

how it seems to be about putting as much up as possible to get noticed, and that it is about the quantity. The second idea that I bring to the court, is gift giving, its not about the quantity or the quality, the size or the cost, it’s the thought that counts. So you have this little guy giving the big guy a load of trolls, and the big guy giving a little present to the little guy. My design, keeps Kayla’s 2 robot guys, the idea of trolling, and social media. It is rather simple, and leads the eye, from the text on the top right to the two

statement/text. I believe it’s important to guide the viewers eyes, and to tell a mini-story/message in what you design, and that everything has a purpose. So if someone were to question your design and ask “Why did you do that” You can give a direct answer and not just say because it looks good. Design with reason!

Overload was the issue that I saw when I was presented with Patrick’s image. This overload was being created by the constant access to information, and the bombardment of ever increasing technologies and although technologyis there to make our l ives s impler sometimes it can lead to overload.

I took the big gift of lots of bits and pieces that Patrick’s robot is giving, with the best of intentions, and used it to demonstrate how all these bits of information can lead to you spreadingyour bra in even th inner and how jumping from one idea to the next can lead to never really accomplishing anything and to the feeling overload.

It is this feeling of overload that we need to watch out for in both ourselves and those around us. We need to noticetice overload when we see it, take a step back and simplify. And that sometimesi t takes someone e l se to not ice, stop and take the time to say “Are you OK?”, before you even realize you are spiraling out of control. It is the stoppingand tak ing the t ime to look after ourselves and the people around us that is the most important thing we can do for each other in today’s society.

To represent this I tried to show everythingfa l l ing apar t on the shou lders o f the little guy, because the load had just become too much to carry, the big guy had just turned and noticed and was about to turn around and help.

After looking at Danielle’s Design. I had thought the idea of everything falling apart was great and as I was thinking I moved on from that to my new idea of everyone wanting the perfect life but sometimes it just falls apart and never happens.

I know one of my dreams is a big house, a nice car, lots of money, lot’s of holidays and for everything to go well. Coming from my own experience I have had to work hard to even get into Uni this year with the new thousand dollar leap in fees, so has pushed me to get a third job ontop of my full time and other casual job and as having a mortgage, fees, rates, bills ect. It gets so tough to even see some light. So I have created this design as sort of a part of me. We are always in this reach for better things and they always look so good but we can never actually reach and grab it. So it will always be a dream to most of us.

I am hoping a lot of you guys will probably relate to me with this so hoping it gets people on an emotional level as well like some of the other groups designs. With the 30% of the last design. I have kept the wording “when it’s all getting too much” and the blue in the background. The blue represents the world of the person reaching and how it fades away when they almost reach or when they dream about these things, just a little hope in the design, as the opposite is the hand being black and white and seemingly dirty to represent a hard worker with not much hope for things. The world they are tring to reach is bright and colourful and glowing, as it looks to people who dont have it.

Kayla Hawkins

DARE TO DREAM

Page 21: Design Tennis Magazine
Page 22: Design Tennis Magazine

I chose to go with this design because it reflects my thoughts on the last couple of days.

Having no internet it placed me more or less a week behind in all my subjects. I had no way to contact anyone either. When i got the internet back, I went into full panic mode on trying to catch up on all my work. This resulted in me creating works that i was not happy with.

I remembered when I was in year 12 and my wello would tell me to stop, relax, then create, whenever things got to much for me. That is what I had to do all of this week when I was catching up, so that I could create something I would be happy with.

I kept the hand from Kalya’s design tennis, the image of the girl is one that I took a couple of years ago, it helped to act as a reminder of what I can do when I’m not stressing out and create works that I’m happy with.

I decided to use different fonts for each of the words as when I’m writing down ideas my handwriting always changes it never stays the same it goes to cursive to print to a combination of the both to block letters and sometimes I write in English then Spanish or both.

Lesley Abarca

CREATE

Page 23: Design Tennis Magazine

kayla, I really found it hard to work out what was going on. The lady in the bottom right hand corner appears to be peaceful and relaxing. I could not understand the choice in the font. I think Lesley was trying to put feeling/emotion into the type, but from my experience you should limit your font choices, and try to have some contrast. In this case there is contrast, but there is no balance, or direction. The only link in the design is the word Relax and the image of the lady. But once again the font chosen for Relax, is not itself relaxed…..

My piece has been inspired from “The Hobbit” in a round about way….I am a lover

saw Lesley’s post I was thinking of two idea, once of creation, with nature, and one with magic/myth. I went the magical way. The inspiration come’s in from Gandalf blowing spoke, creating magic.

From Lesley’s work, I used the lady she had, turned her into a silhouette, kept the word create, and also in a round about fashion the hand.In terms of the type, it is all vector, I

that into a brush, that I then applied to a stroke, which I had drawn (Create Magic) using my Wacom Tablet.

In terms of the background, I kept it black, tho it is a cool black (their is cyan there). I wanted to get away from Lesley’s background in a drastic way, purely because I had no idea what it was, and I found it messy and once again, my work is part of myself, and I prefer less clutter.

Patrick Bianco

CREATION OF MAGIC

Page 25: Design Tennis Magazine
Page 26: Design Tennis Magazine

I loved the silhouette in the image I received and the thought of imagination and the mind. I also couldn’t help but see the space between the hand and the face and the opportunity for a shadow image.

Do you see two faces, sharing a thought, or a vase with leaves? I was inspired in a sort of ‘peace, love and mung beans’ way and that is why the words ‘imagination’ ‘freedom’, ‘peace’, and ‘utopia’ are used to join the minds in thought, or be the leaves in the vase (whichever way you see it).

So what did I keep? I kept the silhouette, and the feeling that the words in the last image put into my head. I used the gradient tool on the background to soften it and after creating ellipse shapes used the ‘type on path’ tool to place the words the way I wanted them.

There is a little contradiction in this image as it talks of freedom and imaginationand yet the minds seem to be linked, stopping them from ever achievingabsolute freedom and peace.

Looking at Danielle’s work I thought the colour and words worked really well to bring across the relaxation type of feel she wanted to bring across. I thought what makes me relax? and what, as designers do we need to do to get out imagination flowing? Relaxation, fitness, love? A lot of possibilities to think about.

Looking at our lives and how busy they are you wonder how the hell we seem to make it work and what we need to do to survive. I have brought this out in my design as I was looking through quotes on what inspires me. I have followed on from one of the words that Danielle had in her work which is imagination. I had found a quote from Albert Einstein which I admire, “Imagination is more important that knowledge”.

I created the cogs in the ladies head to represent how we go through our day to day lives like robots and it all comes naturally (we don’t have to think about what we do, we just do it) The coloured background represents the lucky few of us who can escape and imagine the possibilities of everything and create things we love, with the ladies head being the opposite, she can’t dream or imagine.

I felt like putting this quote in as the main element of the design so it would put viewers minds into deep thought about what they do and what life they live. I wanted to also try a more typographic style with this but I think it worked well.

Kayla Hawkins

IMAGINATION

Page 29: Design Tennis Magazine
Page 30: Design Tennis Magazine

Kayla’s design Tennis had the shape of a woman’s head and two cogs with the quote Imagination is more important then knowledge. This quote got me thinking about the difference between knowledge and imagination and is one more important then the other.

To me the answer is no neither is more important then the other I feel that they work hand in hand as we search for knowledge to create our artworks sometimes. The whole time this was happening I could feel parts of my brain ticking over hence the use of the cogs is because I remembered when I was younger and used to think that the brain worked with a series of cogs.

Always turning our brain to make us function. I wrote Always turning always floating to the top, because my mind is always turning with new ideas that always seem to float to the top of my head, some more then others.

This time around I tried for a more simplistic approach to my design, as after looking at my previous design tennis I found that it was to much for one image and I was not happy with it.

Lesley’s work reminded me strongly of a quote by Gilbert Ryle, a British Philosopher. From his work The Concept of Mind.

It really is a complex quote, and there is so much that could be said of it, and it can be interpreted in many ways. I have done my design based on my interpretation, going for

While I wanted to keep the idea of t h e s i l h o u e t t e f r o m t h e i m a g e I received, I also wanted to move away from the silhouette only being of the head. Our images kept on talking about the wonders of the mind, but the mind is only one part of a person and there is so much more to explore.

The mysteries of each individual are not just in the mind, but in the history and the energy that a person gives out. And it is for these reasons when creating this image I did not just keep the head silhouette, but extended it to a silhouette of a complete person.

I also kept the written word, although I tried to shift the focus from the brain person, in the hope that by the next round I receive something more than just another wonderful mind mystery, may be a mystery of the individual and how they came to be who they are and not

their environment in which they live.

When looking at Danielle’s work. It made me think about fitness first off from the silhouette and how you can be happy in yourself. Then the sentence made me think a bit deeper about things. “It takes more than a mind to make a whole” this got me thinking about so many different aspects of life, love, friendship and important issues.

The sentence made me think of myself in ways as when it comes to issues I feel strongly about, it only takes one person to use their voice and be heard, but that one person inspires others and they will follow and create a “whole” so to say. At the moment I am very against animal cruelty and have started to get really into it so I feel this is something I wanted to bring forward. I started thinking about defenseless animals and how they rely on another person to live and how people aren’t sane when they treat their pets like crap.

I wanted to use the same sentence in my new piece and add to it a bit. I wanted to keep it simple this time and just use darker colours to add to the atmosphere and this is what I had come up with.

HELPING

It takes more than a mind to make a whole. But only one sane, caring mind to make another's life whole.

STOP RACISM

Words hurt think before youspeakReading Kayla’s response to her design she

decided to do something that she strongly believed in which was Animal cruelty.

I decided to follow the same idea so I decided to do racism which is something that I feel strongly about, I can remember all the times when I was younger and even now that I have been told to speak English to go back to my own country I used to have the thought perhaps if my skin color was different then I wouldn’t be picked on so much.

I kept what Danielle had written as kayla had kept it as well, and i quite liked what it said.

I wanted to keep the focus on the image and the main message so I decided to forgo any color and keep everything in black and white.

hit me hard! It was very serious, and not a laughing matter. I suppose that’s where my idea came from. I decided to play with the black and white theme for both the colours and the message. Continuing the theme, but interpreting in my own way.

For my design I suppose there are not many graphic elements. A simple drawing, some text, and an illustrator brush (I loathe to use these but I did…). But their are so many hidden elements. The font makes it look like chalk, therefore it was written on a board, this is black and white. There is a drawing, it’s Paper and Pencil, black and white again. There is the obvious the colours. The use of the blackboard…this could be in a school. There is all types of racism, bullying, discrimination in schools It’s a current issue within education, the workplace, our lives.

I suppose I covered a lot, but with a simple way of viewing it, all be it quirky.

I look forward to seeing what the next round makes of this

THE BOARD

When I received the latest design tennis composition, I just had to show the irony of updating it to a white board and not a black board.

The black board made me think of a totally irrelevant and ineffective anti bullying lesson, that helps no one deal with bullying. Knowing how to label what someone is doing to you, doesn’t make you feel better.

So I set out a white board in a standard way, with a learning intention up the top and the date in the top right-hand corner. Then gave some totally irrelevant information, that isn’t going to help anyone deal with the cyber bullying, that is the issue for this generation. The stick figure is looking at its phone and the latest “u suc” message he has received. (why is it looking at it and allowing someone else to make him feel like shit?)

“It’s not always black and white but it still feels like shit”, is meant to show that sometimes bullying is not all that obvious, it can be quite sly, but it still has the same effect.

This design tennis came to me as a single layer image with a black board, a stick figure and a whole lot of words that label ways people bully other people. I updated the black board to a white board and gave the list of words meanings, none of which help a person that is feeling bullied.

BULLYING TODAY

While reading through Danielle’s artwork, the words she had chosen and their mean-

the same Icon can be used in the same -

their rights and as such today it is seen in

same symbol but using a white hand it can

white power way.

The image used is exactly the same way

Power of IconsWhile reading through Danielle’s artwork, the words she had chosen and their meaning sit got me thinking of how sometimes the same Icon can be used in the sameway but the public can view in two completely different ways.

I decided to use the image of a closed fist as a way to show this. A black closed fist I find is on a lot poster from the Black Power movement when they were fighting for their rights and as such today it is seen in a positive light.

If one were to have the same symbol but using a white hand it can be viewed in a negative light., almost in a white power way.

The image used is exactly the same way but I wanted to convey how different they can be and thus the different feelings that they invoke.
