JOSHUA TREEPRINCIPLES

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This topic studio revolves around notions of observation and introducining key principles of environmen-

tal factors that impact Joshua Tree National Park. After a three day camping trip to the park, this studio proposed a booklet of guidlines for designing in the desert. The main principles that drive this design (Student Science Camp)

highlight the following: 1. Steering Wind: Ground Sculpting, Courtyards, Ventilation

2. Defensive Courtyard and Perimeter: Placemaking 3. Protected and Connected Courtyards: Wind control

4. Curated Views: Directed to natural objects5. Testing Modularity: Precast Concrete systems

6. Material Metamorphosis: Transitions in program7. Controlled Lighting: Filtered and Indirect Sources

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Center for Architecture and UrbanismThe focus of this CALA design was to create a continuous interior reading of form throuhg the layering of levels that transition between programs with angled shifts from one

floor to the next. These shifts have multiple functions and create : sloped outdoor seating, double height conditions,

and mezzanines. This project required students to build a 1/4” scales model of one section of the building, and to represent

as much structural detail as possible.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Barcelona’s unique system of gridded blocks presents an ongoing problem of historic preservation and contemporary design growth.

During my semester abroad, our program to design a Catalan Cen-ter for Islamic Studies began with an extensive analysis of current

Cerda block transformations. The main idea was to increase as much open air green space as

possible in the existing built block. Two diagonal blocks were cho-sen with maximum buildable space with minimal building removal.

An elevated path/bridge allowed fro the creation for maximum ground floor open space. The path of buildings runs along the

boundary of the existing courtyards

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

During our second year, our studio projects were more material and represen-tation based. This project was to create a temporary installation on the bridge

between Watt Hall and Harris Courtyard at the USC School of Architecture. The first two phases of the project was an indepth analysis of an assigned

precedent: Dominus Winery- Herzog and DeMuron where we extracted the idea of cast shadows and material gradient to design an experiential installation

with the same characteristics. Here a gradient of hot pink string with varying degrees end knots create a blur of color and shadows.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In a class on material systems and technology , our project was to create a new CMU block with a specific function that would work as an individual unit and as a wall system.

There are three programs the designed CMU block can function as:

1. Rectangular tubing acts as reinforcment and water transportation while the angled compartments create a green wall.

2. Striations and orientation of the CMU unit allow for a hidden drainage system using rectagular tubing.

3. The protuding units on either side provide a dual purpose; planting compartments for a green wall on one side and tie backs on the backside for a retaining wall.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Multi-family, mid-rise housingThe main idea for this project comes from the elvated form

of the Expo line directily across the street. There are two major strands that make up the overall mass and geometry

of the buidling which mimic the movement of the metro line. The first strand which houses 52 units is hinged along

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The design process for Downtown Los Angeles’ Doyle Street Market focuses on introducing a new form to the existing community develop-

ment through an exploration of macro and micro scale. The traingulated surfaces and vertical walls create a pavilion-like space that deconstruc-tions the transition between interior and exterior program. This form is a manipulation of a grid organization. The grid is then hinged to create a

loose orgnaization that opens more floor area of the market.
