previous page:The image on the cover is of an installation I did in 2010 called Senbazuru. The installation consisted of 1000 paper origami cranes folded from plain white paper and hung in the hallway of my high school. It was inspired by the Japanese legend, which promises that anyone who folds one thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish by the thousandth crane. The cranes are symbolic of my hopes for an unwritten future and had great personal significance as the piece was completed just as I was completing my high school diploma.

Schwesinger Architekten is a small firm based in southern Germany. Founded in 2006, they focus mainly on residential projects. By working closely with the client they develop unique designs that meet the individual needs of the owners. Schwesinger Architekten combines the highest design standards with a clear language and holistic functional building. Economy, functionality and sustainability are natural principles, which arise from the work, development and optimization processes.

The office is characterized by a modern and innovative approach to architecture. Their motto is “Wir en-twerfen keine Wände, sondern die Räume dazwischen!” (We do not design walls, but rather the spaces in between!)

Haus Aplanning and construction

A generous single family home, built in a new development cradled between the historic downtown and the surrounding fields. High ceilings and large windows, along with a very open plan on the ground floor, give this house a spacious feel. The living room wraps around the patio, creating a more private outdoor area, and large sliding glass doors open out into the sunken garden.I was involved in both the planning and construction phase of this project. Over the two terms, I worked closely with the clients as well as the tradespeople. I helped with construction administration and advised the clients on interior finishes and features.

This project transforms a single-family home into a loft-style apartment on the ground floor and office space on the second floor. The stair was blocked off and a separate entrance created for the second floor so that the office space can be leased, and the indoor pool was turned into a sunken bedroom with ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet. The façade was refinished and all the windows were replaced. During my first internship I worked on the construction drawings. When I returned, the construction was in process and I helped with construction administration, including regular site visits.

Haus Lprogrammatic relationships and design concept

A home for one person, this project presents an opportunity to explore unique programmatic relationships, since the single inhabitant eliminates the need for many of the walls necessary in a traditional home. Driving factors behind the design included the height and roof requirements of the local building code and the clients desire for an elegant modern home. We kept the exterior simple and focused on the interior, using minimal walls to create an exciting living space.I had the opportunity to work on the project from the very beginning, first helping to come up with a design concept, and then working closely with the client to develop several variations of the design.

Haus Susing models to develop the design

Designed as an addition to the existing home on the property, this house can also function as a stand-alone home. The design developed out of several constraints presented by the site: the elongated, triangular plan ensures that both homes have a view of the garden. The entranced is raised to the level of the existing house. Grade changes are used to define the rooms; as you move into the more private parts of the house, the floor level descends so that you end up at grade and are able to step from the living room directly into the garden. My tasks focused on creating three-dimensional models, both digital and physical, to help us understand the spatial qualities of the rooms and to develop the roof geometries.

Galt Hotela retreat that activates the city

The focus of the project is a series of courtyard gardens, which create enclosed exterior spaces for the hotel guests to enjoy. Most of these are aligned along the central axis, creating a procession from public to private: upon arrival, guest pass through the main courtyard to reach the lobby, beyond which is an inner courtyard closed at the far end by a reading room with a roof terrace above it. Most of the rooms look down into this interior courtyard. Together with the large window seats, this helps to give the rooms a cozy private feel. In order to activate the storefronts along the side lane, the lane was transformed into a pedestrian passage shaded by trees. This circulation is mirrored in the hotel by the circulation of the single loaded corridor in that wing, which is completely glazed to emphasize the connection to the city.The spa is located in a separate block at the front, connected to the hotel by the pool on the fourth floor.

Writer’s Retreata temporary living/working space

This small residence was designed to be a retreat for a visiting writer looking for a quiet place to work for a week. Located on a low wooded ridge, it is both a home and workspace. Protected on the north side by the wrapping concrete shell, the south side is completely glazed to provide natural lighting throughout the day.The ground floor glazing and large deck on the west side look out over Taylor Lake. The second floor, which consists of the more private spaces - the bedroom, bathroom and workspace - open to the east, facing the calm quiet woods and welcoming in the morning light.

TomatopiaDiversity: preservation and research

In recent years, a growing concern for sustainability and diversity has led to the increasing popularity of heirloom vegetables, and heirloom tomatoes in particular. This project presents a possible response to this phenomenon in relation to two questions: Where do these varieties come from and how have they been preserved? Where do we go from here? The garden’s goal is to preserve diversity by growing a large variety of different tomatoes and collecting and storing the seeds, and to be a leader in tomato research and development as we move forward. In this sense, the garden acts as both a living seed bank and a laboratory, while also producing enough tomatoes to supply the Danforth ward in Toronto.The placement of the large greenhouse on the slope provides the greatest possible sun exposure, and facilitates the movement of water for irrigation. In an effort to involve the community in the garden as an active force, not solely as observers, additional program was added to the botanical garden to create a community hub which provides fresh tomatoes, a community garden and education centre, a market and an access point to the surrounding trail system.

Every summer, the second year class at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture write, direct, produce, and perform a play based on material covered in their Cultural History course. Taking R. Murray Schafer’s writings on the ‘Theatre of Confluence’ as a point of departure for nontraditional theatre, we created a unique theatre experience based on the legends of the Knights of the Round Table. The performance took place at Taylor Lake, where the audience was engaged both with nature and with the performers. Working as part of the set design team and the choreography team, I helped to form the performance spaces of this moving theatrical adventure using physical objects and the dancers’ bodies. Working with 36 dancers wearing black druid capes, we explored the capacity of people to form a space and the enhanced visual impact of a crowd moving in unison.
