SOFI by Bankers Box was a new product line that was meant to be used for in-home use. From an 8-SKU product line that came in various sizes, the two most popular sizes were two small fabric bins that were used for jeans, sweater, towels, etc. I was responsible for two main displays: A Sam’s Club Pallet Display and a Free Standing Display for Staples. I worked with Marketing on the design and layout based on their SKU count as well as the buyers in-store routing guides. All displays are made of B-Flute corrugate which I coordinated with in-house and outsourced manufacturing to produce as well as ship safely to the distribution channels.

Benchmark DisplayProduct Developer, Graphic Design, Instruction Sheets
During my time at Benchmarc I wore many hats. I was predominately in the Product Development department where we took concepts/designs and implemented them into Solidworks. We worked in Solidworks to produce Product Drawings for vendors to get quotes build for testing and production. In addition to working in the Product Development department, I also worked in the design department creating sketches, laying out graphics, and one of my key roles was to create instruction sheets which really tied the sketching, graphics, and CAD all together.
Boostapak Display was a display that really just wanted to showcase the product for sale but not in volume. There were 4 corners that featured only 2 bags in each corner. I had taken the design and implemented into Solidworks. I created all the parts and defined exact sizes for each metal, plastic, and wooden components. In addition, I created the assembly complete with the locations of the holes to match up with the proper fasteners.

Slatwall Cabinet
A cabinet was needed to be designed for slatwall with an acrylic door that can be locked. I created the display in CAD complete with the parts and assembly for production. We had used a recently redesigned slatwall bracket that was bent steel that was stronger and could hold more weight. I also had to place the artwork correctly for the screen printed graphics on the acrylic doors.
Endcap Layout and
For this project I worked closely with the Project Manager. A list of all the endcap products were given and I needed to design and arrange the display in an elegant manner.
In addition to designing the layout to the display and the backdrop diagram for the hooks, the hook themselves needed to be redesigned to accommodate the products. I redesigned the hooks to be stronger and save on material.

RTC IndustriesIndustrial Designer
I worked in the Design Department at RTC where I did a lot of Solidworks and Photorealistic renderings for clients such as Nike, OLAY, and Converse. The Design Department had a strong emphasis on their “Design Intents” which were visual guides for the Project Managers to show the clients the look and feel of the design but also provide the overall design to the Engineering Department. I had to work quickly under pressure with turnarounds times.
One of my first assignments was to help with new configurations of a custom slatwall fixture and new table orientations for Sorel footwear. Sideview images of the boots were provided by the client so we can map the textures on the boots. The challenge was to make sure the renderings had the right angle so the table displays were not covering the slatwall display in the background. In Solidworks I had made multiple configurations for each scene so it could be changed or modified efficiently for the clients requests.

Nike every year requires an update of their Nike Factory Store Binder. It’s a collection of all their displays, furniture, components, and signs in their Factory Outlet Stores. Every year there are revisions to the engineering drawings or changes in materials or colors. I updated the models in the Design Intents to reflect changes in the updated Engineering Drawings. This usually ranged from creating new renderings, updating parts or assemblies, or even drafting completely new parts that were added to their updated collection.

Fabric Storage
7
I was responsible for Bankers Box New Expansive Categories which included an 8 SKU product line called SOFI. The concept was to position Bankers Box as a leader in office storage into the new, growing market of home organization .
I was assigned as the Lead Engineer on working with Marketing on taking concepts and moving them into manufacturing. This involved working with Supply Chain to find materials that were cost effective and readily mass produced. Once fabric and parts such as jute handles, zippers, and weave logos were sourced, I worked with Global Quality to ensure those parts were up to Fellowes’ safety standards and strength requirements. I created Bill of Specifications that aided Global Quality to do factory audits for incoming inspections of raw materials.
Once the raw materials were sourced, I managed Pilot Run and Production runs in China to help our vendor create the products to our quality standards.

The first SKU was the Brix Box (small). The dimensions were considered to fit along with the Stax Shelf as a modular unit. Using these dimensions as a basis, a taller version was offered and 2 other sizes/styles that had zippers. The main design element that differentiated from the market were the rounded corners.

PolyesterShantung
Mocha FabricThe original design intent was to use a slubby/high textured fabric. Early protoytpes used a fabric wallpaper that was not cost-effective moving into mass-production. I found a polyester alternative fabric, Polyester Shantung that gave the texture the product needed but at a fraction of the cost. The made sure the fabric met quality standards such color migration and tearing strength. In addition the fabric needed to repel water. I helped with getting the right coating for water-resistance.
Stax ShelfThe largest SKU was the Stax Shelf that was able to house the Brix Box (small) skus.It had a vertical or horizontal orientation. I developed the Stax Shelf construction to be able to be completely knockdown for packaging.

424 Design, Soft Good ConsultingClient Needs Assessment, Concept, Technical Sketching, Vendor Correspondence, Manufacturing Sourcing
As an independent consultant for my own sole proprietership, 424 Design, I worked with entrepeneurs and start-ups. I partnered up with a local patent attorney to gain most of my projects but also utilized freelance resources such as ELANCE to gain new clients. Some of those clients needed soft good consulting to create backpacks and accessories. From concept through development, all the way to production of a full scale prototype, I assisted them getting their ideas to an actual product. This helped them connect with a pattern maker and/or a cut & sew house to fullfill their sample order.
A startup company in the west coast is developing a line of feature based bags. His first bag that he wants to test in the market is a bag that focuses on anti-theft with regards to locking the main compartment and reinforcing areas to be non-accessible by RFID theft. Early conceptual sketches were presented that included overall design, styles, and key components centered around anti-theft. The solution was business/technology style design that had patent pending features. Patterns were were made to create a full scale prototype with material selections that best suited the application.

An entrepreneur in the military had an idea for a bag that was stylish and versatile to attach other accessories onto the bag such as water bottle, extra storage, and or a camera bag. The bag needed be made with strong durable material but be lightweight for traveling or backpacking. Conceptual sketches were done fast and to the point. Once a concept was chosen, it was refined for pattern making with material and component selection through vendors that I sourced. Today, the first prototype in color combinations in grey/black was sewn and the second protoype is on the way.

Premier Desktop HandlesPremier by Bankers Box started with a refresh on the existing drawer storage boxes. The concept arose for the realization of growth on home based businesses and offices keeping records in the front office rather in the back or separate room. The Premier Drawers which came in 18” or 24” depths in both Letter and Legal Paper Sizes. The main design elements were an asymmetrical drawer handle, modern lines, and black but a stark blue color way.
Bankers Box wanted to create a line of products for the desktop that tied together with the Premier drawers. I was responsible for developing handles for a new desktop line and help tie in the look of the Premier Desktop. The handles were for a 3-Drawer Desktop Organizer, a Stor/File Box, and a grommet handle for a Magazine File.

One of the main focal points of the Premier Desktop was its handle. The first thing to consider is taking a closer look at the handle of the Premier Desktop and see how I can take the design elements to apply to the new handles for the Premier Desktop line. The same radii used on the Premier Drawers were applied to the handles for the Desktop products. A few versions were explored till the team decided on the handles that had the same look/feel of the Premier Drawers. The chosen versions had a label area for writing the contents of the box or the year of the records filed.

Originally, the Addycase was not initially meant to go into production till much later. So the first thing to do was to design for an SLA prototype for test fitting and proof of concept.
Only 2 months later, Lamero Inc. decided to go into production. I managed the project with correspondence with an overseas manufacturing company to produce the first sample production.
After production of the first production sample there were a few changes that needed to be made in CAD then made sure the changes reflected in the product with correspondence with the manufacturer.

The Wingmen are a band that ‘help, support, and assist people with special needs’ through their instructional lyrical music. They approached me to design a prototype that can be play one of their songs in the shower. The main goal was to play the music with high fidelity. I worked closely with engineering to get the right sound quality and to fit all the components into a compact space.
The client really enjoyed the organic shape but still resembled a bar of soap. Surfacing was done in CAD to produce the form. The housing had to be able to fit all the electrical components that was going to be later housed in the prototype.

After the surfacing model for the shelled housing, the next step was to pick out the proper electrical components to produce high quality audio.
One of the biggest challenges was to find a high quality speaker with a relatively small footprint. At first we had a good size speaker but would have made the overall product too tall. I later found a speaker not only was smaller but produced the same results but using fewer voltage.
I worked directly with engineers to put together all the components in the housing. I designed the component layout and made the proper fittings in CAD.

Aerobed Inflatable Bed Products, JOSS Design Group2D sketch to 3D translation, Computer Aided Design, Mockups
Early in my freelance career as an Industrial Designer I started out doing Solidworks CAD for Joss Design Group. I took 2D sketches and designed products in CAD for Aerobed products which included remotes, knob, and vent fasicas. I reversed engineered existing products to get measurements for the new redesign. Working at JOSS Design Group gave me the confidence and comfortability working with advanced surfacing on products.
The remotes which Aerobed called “Wands” allowed the user to inflate/deflate the bed with a push of a button. This was the “Mini Wand” that was dramatically sized down to a smaller product. The internal components were measured to be able to design a smaller wand.
19 injection molded
“XSY Wand” was the first design I did for JOSS Design. It was simple and straightforward to the look but I quickly learned that it’s much more challenging when designing Sometime the most simplest of products is the most difficult to design. For this wand, just getting the right curvature in the middle recess was very crucial to the overall form .
I had designed in CAD some of the most beautiful forms to a knob of Aerobed. Designing organically really disciplined me to not let the “program do the designing.” The sketch was always the most important. Getting it exactly like the original concept was the goal.

New Product Development at SOLO Cup Company2D sketch to 3D translation, Computer Aided Design, Mockups
My internship at Solo Cup really ignited my Computer Aided Design Skills and reverse engineering aptitude. I fully understood about tolerances, shrinkages, and design for manufacturing specifically for the thermoforming plastic process. I reversed engineered Dome Lids (DLR685 & FLR685) from tool drawings for the Mexico market. I also did Quality Control analysis and created new product designs for marketing.
“Cheater Soup Bowls”
The goal was to take the existing 5 oz. and 8 oz. Quizno’s soup bowls and design them to look like they hold more soup. In the design pro-cess, there was constant verification of the fluid ounces the containers held. In the result, a more aestheti-cally pleasing bowl with a function that it looks like it holds more.
“Dome Lids for Mexico”I worked on the dome lids for 7 Eleven market in Mexico. I had to take the existing design for the dome lids and modify it to fit the cups that were used in Mexico. Since the old dome lids that I had to modify were not in a digital format, I had to work closely with tooling drawings and reverse engineer the drawings to recreate the dome lids in Solidworks. After redesigning the lids, files were sent to be prototyped in SLA.
