What is Machine Design?

• Machine design is the process of engineering design. A machine is made up of mechanisms that work together to satisfy the requirements of what the machine needs to accomplish.

• Example: Belt drive• Selection of arragment of machine element

like : pulleys, belts, shafts, Bearings, etc;• Selection of shape • Selection of material for these machanical

element.• Selection of size of these machanical element

Design Consideration• Appearance• Limits and Fits• Size• Weight• Space Required• Required Motion• Reliability• Production Cost• Maintenance Cost• Service• Life• Efficiency

• Speed of operation• Manufacturing method• Standard – National,

international, work or material standard

• Maintenance Frequency• Labour Required• Material Required• Availability of raw materials• Availability of spare parts• Re-usability• Complexity of the machine

• Definition of Problem: Define the design problem all parameters.

• Synthesis: this process of creating the mechanism for the machine and the shape of the elements.

• Analysis of force: find out the all loads acting on each element by force analysis.

• Selection of Material:Consider the all properties of materials, cost, etc.

• Determination of failure: it’s necessary to know the type of failure by which the element will fail when put into the use.

• Selection of Factor Safety: Based on the application select the factor of safety. Knowing factor safety and material strength, determine the permissible stresses.

• Preparation of drawing: prepare assembly drawing part numbers, overall dimesions and parts.

• All component drawing through assemble.
