Like most of us in Orange County, I’m a transplant. My family left a century-old Tudor house near New York City for a place we assumed was long on sunshine but lacking in quality home design and décor. I was only half right. e weather is fantastic, but we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Orange County o ers more than cookie-cutter subdivisions with red tile roofs and faux Mediterranean décor. As it turns out, the county o ers amazing diversity in architectural styles, interior design, and abundant local resources to make homeowners’ dreams come true – and that’s what we celebrate in Design OC magazine.

Everything about Design OC is local, from the homes we feature to the products and services that help transform a house into a home. In this issue, we showcase a variety of architectural styles, including contemporary, midcentury modern, even a Tuscan estate. As well, we’re proud to share trips, trends, and examples of design excellence for every room and part of the home. Best of all, everything is available here in Orange County – no need to travel to the Paci c Design Center, the D&D building in New York, or High Point.

I want to thank all of the people who contributed to the launch of Design OC, including the homeowners who allowed us to share their homes with our readers, as well as the publication’s editorial and design team. I’m also grateful to our advertisers, whose participation made this dream a reality. I encourage you to “shop local” and support these leading design and décor suppliers – and mention that you saw them in Design OC.

is issue is brought to you by the publishers of Orange Coast, a magazine which for 40 years has chronicled life in Orange County. Home design and décor have always been an important part of its mission. Design OC is proud to join the family and call Orange County home.

Sincerely,

Christopher O. SchulzPresident & [email protected]

Designers’ Favorite Finds

We asked ASID Orange County members what their favorite nds were. We hope they inspire you during your future travels, antiquing expeditions, and ea market and shopping trips to pick up the things that attract your eye and enhance your surroundings.

“One of my favorite design nds is this colorful Venetian glass candy bowl I purchased on a recent trip to Italy. It is beautifully unique

and brings me joy, just like the lovely city of Venice!” – Valarie Mina, Transitions Designs

“My latest favorite nds are these organic twisted sculptures that are made from reclaimed tropical vines. e freestanding sculpture has a striking presence yet a  uid feeling to it. ese come in a variety of heights and shapes making each one unique. Available through Witford, Laguna Design Center.”– Megan Crane, Megan Crane Designs

“is Brueton chrome-plated parsons table has a smoked glass top with Carrara Marble base and shepherd casters. I currently have it as a coee table in my home in Laguna Beach. I found it at a resale shop in Vail, Colorado in 1994.”– Gary Finley, Gary Finley Interiors

“My best design nds are one-of-a-kind pieces with lots of personality. We found this incredible

Indonesian pendant of braided ber and seashells at a favorite LA shop. I love its innate ethnic charm!”

– Wendi Young, Wendi Young Design

“ese stone sculptured bookend heads are among my favorite nds, as they make a statement in just about any room. ey are quirky, yet sophisticated and add a touch of elegance while complementing your showcase books.” – Rona Graf, Grace Blu Designs, Inc.

ASID member Audra Miller shares her design expertise, whether you are doing one room or a

complete project from the ground up.

Here are some of her tips: A designer should present a custom package proposal that breaks the job down by area. At the initial presentation, walk the client through the space and where materials go. en bring in contractors and get bids. A great resource is PIRCH (SoCo) for appliances, etc. Clean, classic, timeless design with a little sophistication goes a long way. Mix solids with patterns – think texture. If you have art or an existing area rug, take the colors from these and sprinkle the color palette throughout. “e jewelry” is in the cabinetry and plumbing. ink about the color scheme. Chrome and brushed nickel have gray undertones. With gold undertones, antique bronze or copper works well. Cream with gold and white complement silver. e SoCal beachy feel is very light with soft subtle tones. Make artwork and materials the stars. Bling it up with terric xtures, chandeliers or pendant lighting.• Thetwomostimportantroomstoupdateare the kitchen and the master bedroom. A really cool product is Cambria Quartz: it looks like granite but it’s quartz with a streamlined contemporary look, and it’s less expensive than natural stone. Update your hardware and xtures. Porcelain has great durability over time Economical update? Paint. Favorite accessories: Pillows and bedding. Big substantial lamps with elegant sleek bases. Mercury glass goes with anything. Rustic woods. Simple shades. Going with large pieces brings color into the space. Each phase of design is a layer: 1) Paint and ooring. 2) Space planning. 3) Furniture and area rugs. 4) Window treatments. 5) Artwork and accessories.

Wine 101

Serving Tips

W ine rooms and storage are SoCal must-haves. ASID member Debbie Nassetta at Roomscapes shares the basics.

“People ask me about large wine rooms, but it’s 56-58 degrees in there, which is really cold,” Nassetta said. “A wine room shouldn’t have a table and chairs, because then you are climatizing a huge space. Keep seating outside the cellar.”

Most clients are looking for 600-1,000 bottle storage. A small wine room is great, but have an additional wine refrigerator in the kitchen with whites that can be kept colder than reds. For champagne, never lie the bottles down.

According to Nassetta, most people don’t need as much space to store wines as they think. Ideally, red wines should be stored at 57 degrees; white wines at 45 degrees.

Three Orange County Wineries to Explore

• Cowboy Canyon Winery, Santiago Canyon. Adjacent to Giracci Winery (where grapes are grown) it

harvests Rhone red 100% estate. Chardonnay grapes from Paso Robles; Sangiovese and Meritage from

Napa. Wine tasting room on Giracci property. Winemaker: Michael Cipolla. cowboycanyonwinery.com

• Newport Beach Vineyards & Winery, Upper Newport Bay. Spans 3.8 acres with more than 1,200

Bordeaux-style grape vines to produce award-winning Meritage-style blends. Welcomes reservations for

events. Winemaker: Richard Moriarty. nbwine.com

• Orange Coast Winery, Costa Mesa. Uses grapes from their vineyards throughout Temecula Valley and the

Lodi area (Montfort Vineyard) in Northern California. Tasting rooms in Newport Beach and Corona del Mar.

Winemaker: Douglas Wiens. orangecoastwinery.com

Light dry white wines, rosés, sparkling wines: Serve at 40° to 50° F to

preserve their freshness and fruitiness. For sparklers, chilling keeps bubbles fine

rather than frothy. This temperature works for white dessert wines.

Full-bodied white wines and light, fruity reds: Serve at 50° to 60° F to pick

up more of the complexity and aromatics of a rich Chardonnay or to make a fruity

Beaujolais more refreshing.

Full-bodied red wines and ports: Serve at 60° to 65° F to make the tannins

in powerful Cabernet or Syrah feel more supple and de-emphasize bitter

components.

Horst Noppenberger, principal of Horst Architects, Inc., which was founded in 1990, denes himself through a series of high-prole residential and

commercial projects along the Southern California coastline. His designs adhere to the principle of modernism, stripping away the extraneous and creating a timeless elegance and restrained simplicity. is approach leads to a poetry of space, characterized by the sculptural interplay of light, material and form.

e Strand is a glass contemporary in Dana Point functioning as a gathering place for a large extended family. ree diaphanous pavilions are arranged around a central unifying courtyard wherein the barrier between the interior and exterior space is blurred. e house with three master suites welcomes parents and grandparents, and is suitable for youngsters and guests. A series of overlapping reecting ponds instills a sense of meditation and retreat.

Brion Jeanette of Brion Jeanette Architecture and his 25-year colleague Amy Creager have created world-famous private homes and estates,

such as the stunning Portabello and Crown of the Sea in Corona del Mar, a Craftsman-style that was Zen-inspired with expansive views of the Pacic in Dana Point, and a Lagunitas Italian hillside villa in Pelican Point. Let’s take a peek inside their acclaimed Rock House in Laguna Beach.

e Rock House was a 1990s trendsetter in green architecture: an unprecedented environmentally sensitive home built inside the 27-foot-tall rock formation at the mouth of Aliso Creek with spectacular ocean views. Curved walls and ceilings and built-in furnishings give an oceanic feel to the interior. Sliding sectional doors allow for a seamless transition between home

and beach, welcoming entertaining indoors and out. is earth-sheltered beachfront residence is built from reinforced concrete, steel and glass.Year completed: 1996Square footage: 2,825 on a 9,500-square-foot lotRooms: 2 bedrooms, a theater, wine cellar and recreation roomBaths: 3 bathrooms and 1 powder roomEnergy conserving opportunities: e house is sheltered from heat and cold by the concrete and earth surrounding it on the south side and its roof, where sun exposure is greatest. Additionally, the naturally occurring vegetation (plant material) was safely removed from the site, nurtured and replanted following construction.

Atomic Ranch

Midcentury Interiors by

Michelle Gringeri-Brown.

Photographs capture

the virtues of popular

ranch houses that were

built across the country

following WWII.

Midcentury Modern (California Modernism) is an architectural, interior, product and

graphic design that spans from roughly 1933 to 1965.

Joseph Eichler was a visionary in this design in Orange County. Here is one of his homes in Orange, which is located in one of three tracts he crafted in this area.

Built in the 1960s, a husband and wife, who are LA lm/music producers, moved here from a Santa Monica bungalow in 2009. e at roofed, 2,500-square-foot home with four bedrooms, two baths and a two-car garage, had an expanded master bedroom, bath and lots of closet space. ey added a pool and did the landscape design.

Favorite aspects are the light coming into the airy space that inspires creativity, as well as the great outdoor views. Among their furnishing go-to designers: Jonathan Adler.

Keven Stirdivant, Realtor with KASE Real Estate, specializes in selling midcentury modern homes. “ese architects and designers went against the grain; they had an artist’s eye – at roofs, big windows, beams extending the full length of the ceiling. is style brings in natural light and air ow. e furnishings express simplicity. And color starts at the front door – aqua, Tiany blue, yellow or orange – it’s about minimalism. If you view something in a midcentury modern home, most likely it’s being used.”

2015 | Design OC | 47

Everyone gravitates to the kitchen as a culinary center and social hub. We asked award-winning ASID designer Frank

Pitman about the kitchen spaces he creates to gain some insight.

Q: What was your inspiration for the 2014 Philharmonic House of Design kitchen and butler’s pantry project at e Strand in Dana Point?A: e Design House was a new, ground-up build, and since I was able to customize everything from cabinetry, wall placement, plumbing and electrical locations and nishes, the kitchen/butler’s pantry and breakfast room were my rst choice. My inspiration came from the panoramic ocean view, and the pre-selected color palette provided by the Orange County Philharmonic Society. I chose to take the color scheme in a light, informal direction, incorporating the colors of the ocean, sand, sunsets, whitecaps and driftwood. A challenge was creating a focal point stove wall, which was not in the original plans. I developed a custom nish for the cabinetry, which has 11 layers of paint in driftwood shades of gray, taupe, black and white. e nish has hand-scraped horizontal lines that go across the grain, creating a look of reclaimed, sun-kissed wood, with tidal water marks. Q: What products did you choose to incorporate into the spaces?A: Viking appliances were used throughout, and were selected through Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Irvine. Viking oers all of the latest technology, in food cooking, storage and refrigeration. Q: Latest kitchen tips and trends?A: Professional quality cooking is always at the top of my list, and clients desire this in even smaller budget kitchens: powerful gas cook tops and induction electric cooking are my rst choices. Steam ovens are very popular, and can be combined with microwave cooking for space saving. I also always incorporate separate clear ice makers for kitchens. e ice has superior taste, and produces as much as you need when entertaining. Built-in coee, toaster and mixer areas can be incorporated without taking up counter space, and help keep the areas uncluttered, allowing clients to take in the beauty of the overall design. Built-in pantries with rollouts keep everything at your ngertips. All cabinets should have roll-out shelves whenever it’s applicable. Q: Share some of your favorite kitchen designs.A: My favorite kitchen designs throughout the years vary in budget and design: they incorporated pizza ovens, barbecue grills, hidden breakfast prep centers, large armoire-style pantries, entertainment incorporation, banquettes, and large central islands that allow homeowners to interact with guests, and guests to feel included in the entertaining/meal experience. I often create pieces myself, from the ground up, or from repurposed nds. Re-use is the greenest of green design.

From concept to completion, Julie Laughton focuses on “personal style” to create customized

spaces. She outlines a game plan to combine functionality with beauty.

According to Laughton, home cooks are opting for stainless appliances, or those cladded in wood to seamlessly blend with matching cabinetry. Wolf is No. 1, but top of the line also includes Viking and ermador. A warming oven is a nice addition and great for entertaining. An extra dishwasher can accommodate taller Reidel wine glasses or ne crystal. Built-in coee makers as well as wine stations, which keep the wine pressurized, are popular now. She recommends Sub-Zero for moisture control. Store your food and veggies in the refrigerator and add a separate beverage center.

Backyard kitchens and Jacuzzi spas make the outdoors a gathering place all year long. Invisible doors or removable walls opening from the kitchen let in the views. Upgrading to natural colors makes for subtle comfortability. Consider a canopy or overhang to keep you and your guests out of direct sunlight. Make the food and beverage stations accessible from the pool, so you can swim right up to get a drink or snack. Now you can entertain or have your own private retreat.

Combining Style

With Function

48 | Design OC | 2015

Photography by Jean Laughton

Custom kitchen with cathedral ceilings in a beach house on Balboa Island featuring limestone

backsplash that looks like wet sand.

Creating a master bathroom that is a soothing, spa-like sanctuary is continually one of the

top remodeling requests by my clients. With the amazing selection of unique natural stone

and intricate tiles in a variety of colors, patterns and textures, almost any kind of look can be

achieved. Add to that all the new technology available from wired, recessed medicine cabinets to

concealed toilets, the entire experience of the bathroom has changed.

For a long time, a large shower with all the controls and options was the reigning king of the

bathroom remodel wish lists. The bathtub was sometimes viewed as a necessity that I had to find

a way to fit into the plan. Now, when remodeling their bathrooms, many clients are looking to the

bathtub to make a design statement as well as fulfill a functional need. Luxurious freestanding tubs

are taking center stage like a piece of sculptural art. With a dramatic tub poised against a backdrop

of muted colors, natural materials and soft light, the bathroom is becoming even more than just a

personal sanctuary. It’s yet another place for the homeowner to make their own design statement.

Creating

Dream Spaces

ASID designer Cindy Smetana shares her secrets and where you can nd her go-to

kitchen and bath products.

Kitchens: Combine with a great room and attached outdoor living area. Popular items: Caesarstone quartz for countertops has the look of natural stone like granite or marble, comes in vibrant colors and involves no maintenance; stainless steel or panel-fronted appliances with distressed cabinetry; three-sided wine refrigerators; one-level islands for storage, buets and seating. Consider a 60” range and a 36-60” pro cooktop; add a Wolf steam oven. Musts: walk-in pantries, coee systems, cabinet tray dividers and recessed lighting, or pendants and chandeliers. Favorite lighting resources: PIRCH, Faucets N’ Fixtures and Lighting Innovation.

Baths: Homeowners are opting for spa-like retreats that are soothing and therapeutic. ink masculine and feminine: Use the same elements but his are more angular, hers have more curvature. Choose a tone on tone color palette: monochromatic whites, blues and grays. In the 2014 Philharmonic House of Design master bath she chose a Myson heated towel bar, Native Trails hammered sink, Dornbracht out-of-the-wall xtures, Victoria + Albert free standing tub, Toto toilets and Zucchetti plumbing. Favorite bath resources: Faucets N’ Fixtures and RSSA.

Year RoundOutdoor Living in SoCal

With our year round mild climate in Southern California, outdoor living is second to none. Discover how you can combine function and beauty in your outdoor environs,

transitioning seamlessly from indoor spaces.

According to John Shippy, principal of Geoscape Landscape Construction Inc., a luxury landscape design and construction rm, clients want an

outdoor space to recharge and entertain. Keep it clean, evocative and easy to access. Bi-fold doors with an operable 15-foot door opening to the outdoors opens up the space. Brighten up the colors – from golds and browns to bone and grays, with exotic tones such as taupe. e ocean and views should be the leading backdrops. Whiter and brighter is popular, but if you like cool tones, blue-greens are very soothing.

Must haves? Top-of-the-line appliances that are more subtle. e cooking area is busy, but the dining and bar should be set up for more conversation.

Focus on the elements that help you relax: patio covers, the positioning of trees for afternoon sun control, re lounges with adjustable ames under an awning or canopy. A barbecue kitchen is practical because you can utilize the space all year long and not go back and forth to the indoor kitchen.ink LED – it’s low maintenance, lasts much longer and sheds a welcoming glow.

For pool and spa bliss, zero edge (innity) pools create a dramatic eect. We’re doing more water projects with an oasis feeling. In-oor systems clean and heat the pool; lines are plumbed, so water comes back into the pool and the heat rises to the top four times faster. Clients are also opting for saltwater and ozone pools. Water walls are a beautiful feature too, spilling down the face.

There’s a gem for foodies in SoCo Collection, Costa Mesa … and it’s PIRCH.

The Patio offers weekday cooking demonstrations by chefs on staff at 3 p.m. Want to

learn about steam cooking? Extra virgin olive oil and its diversity? Or range cooking

and grilling possibilities?

The demonstration kitchen features high-end products from Elkay, Lynx, La Marzocco

and a hearthstone oven from Woodstone. Discover outdoor kitchen products that

make family get togethers and entertaining easy. Chef demos are also offered in the

Savor kitchen.
