The radical Modern–style types of Giambattista Bodoni arrived on the typographic scene in Europe in about 1798. Bodoni was determined to produce letterforms of great beauty. His type had a strong vertical stress, an abrupt contrast between the thick and think letter strokes, and slightly concave hairline, bracketed serifs. Bodoni has been revived by many type founders during the 20th cen–trury, including Linotype 1914–16 and Monotype 1921.

Nicholas Jenson

{Renaissance Type}

Adobe Jenson is an old style serif typeface drawn for Adobe Systems by type designer Roger Slimbach. Its Roman styles are based on a Venetian old style text

face cut by Nicolas Jenson. In 1470, Nicholas Jenson (1420-80), a French type cutter and printer who lived in Venice, produced a type that surpassed all the earlier roman types cut in Italy. Jenson went on to produce a second type six years later, known as the white letter roman, and used for the printing of Nonius Peripatetica. This type had a slight contrast between thick and think strokes, the serifs were heavy and steeply sloped, the low-er-case e had a sloping horizontal bar, the letters had a diagonal stress, and the ascenders had slanted serifs. The fine proportions of Jenson’s type have been an inspiration for type designers ever since.¶ Although the predominant typographic style in Italy was roman, it was not exclusively so. Even Jenson still continued to produce books using the black letter, as did others.

GILL S

HUMANISTSANSSERIF

Eric Gill’s elegant and influential type, one of the most outstanding sans-serif designs of the 20th century, was issued by Monotype in England for mechanical composition in by Monotype in England for mechanical composi–tion in 1929. Gill Sans was inspired by Edward Johnston’s type for the London Underground in 1916 and started life as a lettering style for the sign on the font of the bookshop of a friend of Gill’s. A Humanist san serif, it follows the style of classical Roman letterforms, such as the double story of the lower–case g and the scale and proportions of the capital letters.
