“THAT’S WHY CITIES ARE UGLY OR BEAUTIFUL, DEPENDING ON THE BEAUTY OR UGLINESS OF THE STREETS IN WHICH THEY ARE MADE OF. AND IN RELATION TO THE ENERGY OF HUMAN ACTIVITIES THEY CONTAIN.”G. De Carlo (1995)

RESEARCH STATEMENT

CONTROLLED

MASS - PRODUCED SINGLE FUNCTION

DISSUASIVE

UNPLEASANTAn accumulation of urban phenomena in which social control and its inherent design play a significant role in the way we perceive and engage in public space and social interactions.

*

HOSTILE[...] it is not only individuals who render spaces unfriendly – contexts such as empty streets, design factors such as enclosed footpaths which have no escape route and the lack of infrastructural facili-ties – but also contribute to the creation of unfriend-ly spaces.

PLEASANTA plateau, it is a state we would hope to achieve for a long, stable, self reinforced period. It describes the systemic shape of our lives, and the mean which things persist.

*

HOSPITABLEThe capability of a city to be open, accessible and sustainable and to be able to manage people mo-bility, to regenerate public spaces, to offer an intel-ligent variety of services.

TEMPORARY PROJECTS CAN TRANSFORM A PLACE, MAYBE ONLY FOR A LIMITED TIME AND IN THE FORM OF TRANSITORY APPEREANCE, BUT THEY ALSO PERMANENTLY AND SUBSTANTIALLY REMAIN IN THE PEOPLE’S MEMORIES. THE FUNDAMENTAL SUCCESS FACTORS ARE THE WAY THE PUBLIC SPACE IS DEALT WITH, THE AESTHETIC QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT, AND THE ADAPTATION OF THE APPROACH TO THE SITUATION’S SPEFICITIES.

R. Lüscher (2014)
