The2019-20coronaviruspandemicdisease(COVID-19),appearedforthefirsttimein
Wuhan(HubeiProvince,China)inlate2019andrapidlyspreadintherestoftheworldsince
theearlymonthsof2020,hasproducedasignificantandsadlydramaticimpactinthelifeof
allpeople.Todate(April22th,2020),over2.550.000peoplehaveshownsymptomsandover
175.000diedforhealthandrespiratoryproblems1.Whiletheentirehumanityfeels

dangerouslypowerlessatthesametimeanunprecedentedamountofinitiativesacrossthe
worldhaveshownhumancreativityandresilience.Theentirescientificcommunityis
cohesiveinfacingthisemergencyandtheseverehealth-relatedissuesthathaveariseninthe
lastmonths.
Inthisunparalleledscenario,theglobalDesigncommunityiscalledtoact.Anditisdoingit!
Thenewinstancespointedoutbytheglobalemergenciesallowreflectingtothewaysthe
Designdisciplinecananswertounprecedentedphenomena,withthewilltoforeseelikely
solutionsinthelongrunfromthelessonthatwecanlearninthesemonths.Atthesametime,
itispossibletoimmediatelyunderlineallbottom-upandtop-downreactionsthatformally
andinformallyarearisingasconsciousdesignedactionstosolvetheCOVID-19bothatthe
smallscalesandatthelargeones.
Thereisawidespreadperceptionthatthisworldwidecrisiswillchangeallaspectsofour
wayoflivingandrelatingtoeachother.Governments,companies,NGOs,communitiesand
individualsarealreadydedicatingtheirtimetoreflectthefuturescenarios,devising
solutionsthatcanenableatransitiontothenewworldthatmightcomeafterthepandemic.
Whilstcontributingtotheon-goingchallengesofthepandemic,theDesigncommunitycan
alsocontributethroughitsabductivereasoning,withpropositionsfornewscenariosonthe
post-pandemicaftermath.
TheaimofthisSpecialIssueoftheStrategicDesignResearchJournalistoenrichthecultural
andscientificdebatebygatheringandmappingallprogressesproducedintheCOVID-19
emergencyscenarioand,then,tounderstandtheroleoftheDesigndisciplineinfacingthe
complexglobalemergencies.
Therefore,manuscriptsdevelopedforthisSpecialIssuecaninclude,butnotlimitedto:
• Casesstudies,designprojectsandexperimentalapplicationscarriedoutin
emergency-drivenscenarios,andtheircontributioninfacingtheCOVID-19-related
difficulties,orindirectlygeneratedfromit.
• Phenomenologicalinvestigationsofregional/localpolicies,andtheirimpactatthe
internationalscale,includingthescalabilityoftrialsinthewayofsustainableand
inclusiveapplications.

competitiveformsofsustainablewellbeing.
• Inductivestudiesusingtechnology-ledanddesign-drivenapproachesaimedtocreate
moreresilientandsustainablesocialformsofwellbeing.
• Interdisciplinaryexplorationsandproactivedesign-ledscenariostudiesconcerning
positivemultidisciplinaryimpactswithintheDisciplineaftertheCOVID-19
emergency.
• Theoretical/methodologicalstudiesonfutureresearchlinesthattheDesign
disciplinemayconsiderforthenextdecades,eventakingintoaccounttheadvances
proposedwithintheDisciplineinlastyears.
• ImpactofCOVID-19inHEsystemsandstrategiesadoptedtofaceeducation-related
issues.
Tohelpbringnewinsightsintothistopic,theGuestEditorswelcomepapersfrom
researchers,designersandprofessionalsworkinginallfieldsofDesign,forreviewand
possiblepublicationinthisforthcomingSpecialIssueoftheStrategicDesignResearch
Journal.
