To date (April 22 th , 2020), over 2.550.000 people have shown symptoms and over 175.000 died for health and respiratory problems 1 . dangerouslypowerlessatthesametimeanunprecedentedamountofinitiativesacrossthe

worldhaveshownhumancreativityandresilience.Theentirescientificcommunityis

cohesiveinfacingthisemergencyandtheseverehealth-relatedissuesthathaveariseninthe

lastmonths.

Inthisunparalleledscenario,theglobalDesigncommunityiscalledtoact.Anditisdoingit!

Thenewinstancespointedoutbytheglobalemergenciesallowreflectingtothewaysthe

Designdisciplinecananswertounprecedentedphenomena,withthewilltoforeseelikely

solutionsinthelongrunfromthelessonthatwecanlearninthesemonths.Atthesametime,

itispossibletoimmediatelyunderlineallbottom-upandtop-downreactionsthatformally

andinformallyarearisingasconsciousdesignedactionstosolvetheCOVID-19bothatthe

smallscalesandatthelargeones.

Thereisawidespreadperceptionthatthisworldwidecrisiswillchangeallaspectsofour

wayoflivingandrelatingtoeachother.Governments,companies,NGOs,communitiesand

individualsarealreadydedicatingtheirtimetoreflectthefuturescenarios,devising

solutionsthatcanenableatransitiontothenewworldthatmightcomeafterthepandemic.

Whilstcontributingtotheon-goingchallengesofthepandemic,theDesigncommunitycan

alsocontributethroughitsabductivereasoning,withpropositionsfornewscenariosonthe

post-pandemicaftermath.

TheaimofthisSpecialIssueoftheStrategicDesignResearchJournalistoenrichthecultural

andscientificdebatebygatheringandmappingallprogressesproducedintheCOVID-19

emergencyscenarioand,then,tounderstandtheroleoftheDesigndisciplineinfacingthe

complexglobalemergencies.

Therefore,manuscriptsdevelopedforthisSpecialIssuecaninclude,butnotlimitedto:

• Casesstudies,designprojectsandexperimentalapplicationscarriedoutin

emergency-drivenscenarios,andtheircontributioninfacingtheCOVID-19-related

difficulties,orindirectlygeneratedfromit.

• Phenomenologicalinvestigationsofregional/localpolicies,andtheirimpactatthe

internationalscale,includingthescalabilityoftrialsinthewayofsustainableand

inclusiveapplications.

• Interdisciplinaryexplorationsandproactivedesign-ledscenariostudiesconcerning

positivemultidisciplinaryimpactswithintheDisciplineaftertheCOVID-19

emergency.

• Theoretical/methodologicalstudiesonfutureresearchlinesthattheDesign

disciplinemayconsiderforthenextdecades,eventakingintoaccounttheadvances

proposedwithintheDisciplineinlastyears.

• ImpactofCOVID-19inHEsystemsandstrategiesadoptedtofaceeducation-related

issues.

Tohelpbringnewinsightsintothistopic,theGuestEditorswelcomepapersfrom

researchers,designersandprofessionalsworkinginallfieldsofDesign,forreviewand

possiblepublicationinthisforthcomingSpecialIssueoftheStrategicDesignResearch

Journal.

ThemanuscriptsmustbewritteninEnglishandtheymustfollowtheAPAstyle.

Authorsareinvitedtosubmitfullpapers(NOMORETHAN5000WORDSincludingalltext

parts)respondingtooneofthetopicsdescribedabove.

Allsubmissionsaredoubleblindpeerreviewed,andacceptedpaperswillbepublishedin

Vol.13No.3(September-December2020).
