couple’s golf

Some couples find great fun and companionship when playing golf together, but for others, it is sometimes referred to as “ The Divorce Game”. The upside enjoyment is terrific. There is the outdoor exercise, the socialization with good friends, the meeting of new friends, and the enhancement of vacations with beautiful surroundings.Golf is an individual game even though it is played together. Couples tennis or bridge is a bit different because if one of the players is less proficient, it may not be as enjoyable for both. The golfer is only competing against the golf course and par. Many husbands would love to have their wives play golf and be able to share their interest in the game. A word of wisdom from the famed instructor, Harvey Penick, who said, ”One of the biggest problems with women golfers is their husbands”. The late Mr. Penick was referring to the husband’s attempts to teach his wife how to play golf. Could be a similar situation to a husband teaching his wife to drive a car.A husband teaching a wife can be very touchy. Suggestions, all too often begin to sound like criticism. Comments such as, “You did exactly the same thing wrong”, or “You aren’t even trying to do it right”, can lead to some very tense moments. Trying to make

corrections on the golf course is extremely difficult for someone to do. Save the lessons for the practice tee, or better yet the teaching professional. If the wife is constantly asking,” What did I do wrong?” She will deserve whatever she receives. Men are problem solvers, and when presented with a problem, will do their best to solve it; however misguided their solution may be.If a husband truly wants his wife to learn the game, he will have to do his part. This means golf lessons from a good professional, decent clubs, not hand me downs, and for a while playing Par 3s and less difficult executive courses, which are not so intimidating to the beginner. Most of all he has to give loads of encouragement and very little criticism. With the effort put forth and a positive approach, he then has a good chance of adding a wonderful and mutually enjoyable activity to their marriage.
