Saudi Arabia lies to the west, south and south east and Oman to the southeast and northeast. The United Arab Emirates is a consti tutional federation of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm AlQuwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

The federation was formally established on 2nd of Decembber 1971. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected as President on the 3rd of November 2004, following the death of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who held the post from the foundation of the State on the 2nd of December 1971 until his death on 2nd of November 2004.

Dubai

From the timeless tranquility of the desert to the lively bustle of the souk, Dubai offers a kaleidoscope of attractions for visitors.

In a single day, the tourist can experience every thing from rugged mountains and aweinspiring sand dunes to sandy beaches and lush green parks, from dusty villages to luxurious residential disttricts and from ancient houses with wind towers to ultramodern shopping malls.

The emirate of Dubai is a dynamic combination of international business centre and a laid back tourist escape; a city where the sophistication of the 21st century walks hand in hand with the simplicity of a bygone era.

All of these contrasts give Dubai its unique flavor and personality; a cosmopolitan society with an international lifestyle, yet with a culture deeply rooted in the Islamic traditions of Arabia.

Since earliest time, Dubai has been a meeting place, bringing together the Bedouin of the desert interior with the pearldiver, the merchant of the city with the seagoing fisherman.

Having expanded along both banks of the Creek, Dubai’s central business district is divided into two parts Deira on the northern side and Bur Dubai to the south. Each has its share of fine mosques and busy souks, public

buildings, shopping malls, hotels, office toweers, banks, hospitals, schools, apartments and villas.

Outside this core, the city extends to the neigh boring emirate of Sharjah to the north, while extending south and west in a long ribbon of development alongside the Gulf, through the districts of Satwa, Jumeirah and Umm Suqueim.

At first glance, the city presents a predomin antly modern face, an everchanging skyline of new developments, from striking glass and concrete towers to gracious modern buildings incorporating tradittional Arabian architectural motifs and features.

Relion and Language

Islam is the official religion of the UAE. The Quran is the Holy Book containing God’s work as revealed to the Prophet Mohammed by the Angel Gabriel.

Other religions such as Christianity and Hinduism are widely practiced and respected in the UAE.

The official language of the United Arab Emirates is Arabic, but English is widely spoken and understood, with both languages being commonly used in business and commerce.

Currency, tippg and bargaining

The UAE Dirham (Dhs) is divided into 100 Fils. Notes come in denominations of Dhs 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000. There are 1 Dhs, 50 Fils, 25 Fils, 10 Fils and 5 Fils coins (although the last two denominations are rarely used today). The Dirham has a constant midrate against the US Dollar of approximately US$ 1 = Dhs 3,66.

Tipping practices are similar to those in most parts of the world. Some restaurants include service, otherwise a tip of 10 per cent is usually quite adequate and always much appreciated.Bargaining is part of the fun of shopping in Dubai. While bouttiques, some electronics shops, department stores and supermarkets operate on a fixedprice basis, most other outlets consider friendly negotiation a way of daily life.

Road rules and useful numbers

The UAE has very efficient traffic systems and generally a safe place to drive. Roads are mainly dualcarriage way, wellsignposted and in good condition.

However, it is advisable to consider the following rules of the road:h Drive on the righthand side of the road.h Speed limits are normally 60 km/h to 80

km/h in town, and 100 km/h to 120 km/h on highways.

h Speeding tickets are often issued automatically by cameras, without the driver knowing. Car rental companies claim these from you.

h Any accident, however minor, must be reported to the police.

h Always carry your driving license with you.

The Dubai Road & Transport Authority (RTA) introduced road tolls (Salik) since July 1st 2007. All cars need to be fitted with a ‘Salik Tag’ so that when you pass through the Salik points your car will be registered and money will be charged.

Fiing

The fishing season in Dubai starts in October and runs through up to the month of May. With the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf bringing in masses of baitfish in winter, this area is a prime hunting ground for the sailfish and many other game fish.

The abundance of sailfish is staggering and the size of the sails is also astonishing with catches of some fish being over 130 lbs.

Dhow Cruise with dner

Dhow Cruise with dinner is a romantic way of spending an evening while onboard of a traditionally decorated wooden dhow (cabin cruise), as it sails along the Dubai Creek under the moonlight.

The major Dubai landmarks shine through the moonlight sky, as the wooden vessel slips silently across the creek. The past and present architecture of the area is brought to its full beauty during this time of the day.
