Described as …Confident / Optimistic
• Believe the future is bright.
• Feel that they are a generation of leaders….they have the drive and ambition and have had proper training on leadership in the classroom.
1
Issues with Confidence and Optimism
• Feel Invincible– Have the tendency to take more risks
because they do not feel the consequences. – Feel that you are already going to succeed.– Too many cooks in the kitchen. – Could come off as cocky to other generations
2
How do I overcome?
• Develop and practice proper Risk Management, Crisis Management, Alcohol Policies.
• Bring in speakers regularly to talk about issues such as safety, nutrition, STIs, Alcohol and Drugs.
• Develop successful scholarship plan• Go over with chapter descriptions of chapter
positions– Have committee and committee heads.
3
We are described as….
Sheltered • Considered the most protected in American
History. • Witnessed tragic events in American history
such as Columbine and September 11 which lead to an increase in security around schools.
• Described as sheltered due to the fact of always being encouraged to follow the rules.
4
What is wrong with being sheltered?
• Could result in some students being directionless when they are exposed to a college environment.
• Many are sheltered by their parents opinions and thus have difficulty in developing their own opinion about certain issues.
• When it comes to rules and regulations if it is not printed in a syllabus or guide, millennial students will not follow it. They are accustomed to visuals and seeing what they can and can not do.
5
How do I overcome?
• Have a cultural event..do something different.
• Be a role model for the Chapter Rules.• Post rules and regulations .• Provide individual copies to each member
living in the house.
• Take ownership of your chapter.
6
Community Service
• 70 percent participate in community service or volunteer work.
• The generations wants to share their experiences with others and give back to the community.
• Greeks are the largest network of volunteers in the U.S.:-10 million hours of volunteer service per year (nationally
7
Technology
• Described as the children of the computer age.
• Rely on the convenience of cell phones, lap tops, email, internet, etc. to help them solve daily problems.
• Convinced that technology allows this generation to stay connected with one another without having to talk face to face.
• Students expect professors to know technology- when they email a professor they want an answer fast.
8
What is so bad about technology?
• When conflict happens within a chapter members may not be able to handle the issue in person.
• There could be communication issues with advisors and house directors who are not as technologically adept.
• Can cause stress if one does not get an instant answer from an email or text….or something goes wrong with their computer!

Facebook does not always show the best in everyone..
PHI MU BABY!!! going down to the bar and having five new friend requests the next day, sneaking into patty, rum and cokes, rum and cokes, 5pts with the girls, Drinking wine (esp red), pavlovs, pitchers of margaritas…I LOVE MY PHI MU SISTAS!
Don’t let this represent your chapter….
11
Communicate the right way
• Communicate with advisors and house directors the right way…not every generation text messages..
Communicate by phone, email, and in person- invite to meals, events, etc.
Work with the House Director/ Advisor to plan special events
Meet weekly with House Director
Work with House Director/advisor to plan educational sessions for your chapter
12
But we have to..it is mandatory
• Although many do it out of the goodness of their heart, there are many who do it for personal gain, resumes, college apps, etc.
Some may feel the pressure to keep up with everyone, and community service is a popular trend to follow.
• Make sure that members do not feel that they “have to” participate in community service. – Line up service with the values of your chapter. Allow variety,
and make sure members have input on the events.– Follow up with reflection after service events.
13
Multi-tasking• The Millennial Generation focuses on being involved in more than one
activity.• More than 3 out of 4 students are currently working an average of 31
hours per week while attending college.
Issues with being a Multi-tasker-BURNOUT!!!!!
As a Leader..1) Do not make so many events mandatory2) Do not hold so many events in one week3) Present Time Management4) Make sure to have your time also5) Find a Mentor

Conclusion
Marian Salzman, an ad agency executive at J. Walter Thompson, who has been managing and tracking
millennia's since they entered the workforce states this about our generation..
"Some of them are the greatest generation. They're more hardworking. They have these tools to get things done…They are enormously clever and resourceful.
Some of the others are absolutely incorrigible. It's their way or the highway. “
Don’t be the incorrigible….be the greatest Millennial Leader you know you can be!
