Area: 3,055 square milts

Population (1998): 105,640

County seat: Bend, Population: 32,220

County established: 13 December 1916

Deschutes County was detached from Crook County when it was given over to lumbering, ranching and

irrigated farming. In the past 30 years the county has been transformed by resort and retirement communities. The

earliest organized public cemetery was at Camp Polk near Sisters. By 1906 there were six additional public cemeteries.

within the Deschutes National Forest. Cultus Mountain is an old volcano between Cultus and Little Cultus Lakes, Northwest of Crane Prairie Reservoir and west off of the Cascade Lakes Highway. Persistent stories report that 19 Indians were buried at the summit of the mountain. A visitor in 1906 reported the sites and this visitor repeated his report as late as January 1955 for the Deschutes Pioneer Gazette (Reprinted in Deschutes County Yester-Year, No. 2 Fall 1986; Deschutes County Historical Society, Bend Oregon). The mountain top is 2,100 feet in elevation above Cultus Lake and it is difficult to understand how 19 bodies would be transported up the steep slopes. Were horses available? Be that as it may the compiler has found that the story persists, but with no confirmation. (Not shown on Crane Prairie Reservoir 1963-81 USGS Quad. map.)
