Desch Plantpak produces thermoform pots and

containers, transport trays, marketing trays, seed

trays, propagation trays and bedding plant packs for

the professional horticulture trade. Our specialty is the

production of plastic packaging using thermoforming

and injection moulding processes. The fully automatic

moulding machines at our various production sites are

fed with PP (polypropylene), PS (poly-styrene), PET

(polyester) or biopolymers. With a multi-site production

and a total capacity of around 40.000 tons of finished

products, Desch Plantpak is certainly one of the

leading thermoformers and injection moulders in the

horticultural market.

Quality control is an important aspect of production.

Raw materials, half finished and finished products are

subjected to meticulous checks on the entire production

line. This is done by operators during production and

by quality controllers taking samples. State of the art

physical and mechanical testing apparatus is used to

carry out these checks.

Producimos nuestras macetas,

bandejas y envases con el máximo

respeto hacia las personas y la

naturaleza. Todo lo que crece y florece

requiere nuestra atención y el sector

caso, no somos menos y tomamos

nuestra responsabilidad en ello. Con

este fin hemos creado un sistema de

recogida y reciclado para las bandejas

y macetas en PS y PP de nuestros

clientes habituales en los Países

Bajos. También apoyamos el Pacto de

Envases (Convenant Verpakkingen

III), que incluye acuerdos sobre la

reducción del impacto medioambiental

de los envases y la lucha contra los

desechos.

“Each European country has its own requirements in terms of geranium va-riety and colour. Customers can rely on us to supply them with geranium pro-ducts from cutting to plant”, says Perry van der Haak.

“En Europa cada país tiene sus preferencias en cuanto a variedad y color. Suministramos a los clientes nuestras variedades de geranio tanto en esqueje como plantas jóvenes”, dice Perry van der Haak.

Handelskwekerij, which is based in

’s-Gravenzande, a town in the

municipality of Westland. This family

business was set up by Piet van der

Haak in the 1960s and specialises in

growing geranium cuttings and half-

grown products and supplies to various

countries in Europe. Today, the

business is in the hands of Piet’s sons

Perry and William van der Haak.

Innovation: the development of a new trayObviously, supplying to different coun-tries involves long-haul transport. When van der Haak built new green-houses in 2006, the business took the opportunity to make some major chan-ges relating to energy saving, automa-tion and handling.

Perry van der Haak: “We wanted to replace the cardboard boxes in which we pack and transport our cuttings with plastic trays. We had a number of reasons for this: overall handling, the survival rate of cuttings and to make it possible to plant cuttings straight from the tray. The new growing and trans-port trays needed to meet quite a lot of requirements, so we were looking for a company that could develop the tray with us. We chose Desch Plantpak: they are a manufacturer that actively listened to us, contributed their own ideas and have a healthy no-nonsense mentality, just like us.

The advantages of the new trayOnce we had completed the develop-ment process, we started to use the new tray in 2006. It has definitely been a success. For example, there is more space for the cuttings in the new tray, which substantially decreases plant losses. The tray is also produced in the same green colour that features in the Van der Haak logo.

The green colour makes the trays re-cognisable and makes it easier for our customers to return used trays, so that we can use them again. Added to this, Desch Plantpak is happy to take back and recycle any plastic trays that we don’t want to re-use”says William van der Haak.

During the development process, great thought was also given to the de-stac-king and positioning of the trays on planting machines and transportation on Danish trolleys in lorries. Thanks to their handles, the trays are now easy to

Quando nel 2006 Van der Haak ha costruito nuove serre, l’azienda ha compiuto un gigantesco passo avanti nel campo del risparmio energetico, dell’automazione e della movimentazione.

Perry van der Haak continua: “Era nostro desiderio sostituire le scatole di cartone in cui le talee venivano imballate e trasportate con alveoli in plastica per facilitare la movimentazione complessiva, allungare il ciclo di vita delle talee e dare ai nostri clienti la possibilità di trapiantare le talee con un sistema automatizzato. Questi nuovi alveoli per la coltivazione e il trasporto dovevano soddisfare requisiti severi, per questo abbiamo cercato un partner che sviluppasse insieme a noi il nuovo contenitore. In Desch Plantpak abbiamo trovato un produttore che condivide il nostro entusiasmo per la ricerca di nuove soluzioni e che, come noi, possiede una sana mentalità pratica.

I vantaggi del nuovo contenitore alveolatoDopo l’iter di sviluppo il nuovo contenitore alveolato è stato messo in uso nel 2006, con piena soddisfazione. Infatti esso offre alle talee più spazio, allungandone considerevolmente la durata. Inoltre è progettato nel ben riconoscibile colore verde del logo di Van der Haak.

Il colore verde accresce la riconoscibilità e aiuta i nostri clienti nella restituzione dei contenitori utilizzati, che così possiamo nuovamente usare. Gli esemplari che non riutilizziamo tornano a Desch Plantpak, che li ricicla.” spiega William van der Haak.

Durante lo sviluppo si è tenuto conto anche della sovrapposizione e del posizionamento dei contenitori alveolati sulle macchine trapiantatrici, del trasporto nei camion, su carrelli danesi.

Innovación: el desarrollo de una nueva bandejaSuministrar a distintos países implica una gran cantidad de transporte. En 2006, cuando Van der Haak construyó sus nuevos viveros, obtuvo grandes logros en ahorro energético, automatización y manipulación.

Perry van der Haak: “A fin de mejorar el proceso de manipulación en general, la conservabilidad de los esquejes y para brindar a nuestros clientes la posibilidad de plantar automáticamente, queríamos sustituir las cajas de cartón en las que se embalaban y transportaban los esquejes por bandejas plásticas. Las nuevas bandejas de cultivo y transporte debían cumplir muchos requisitos, por eso nos buscamos un socio que pudiera desarrollarlas junto con nosotros. En Desch Plantpak encontramos un productor que piensa con nosotros y que, como nosotros, tiene una mentalidad sana y va directo al grano.

Las ventajas de la nueva bandejaDespués de un período de desarrollo, finalmente, en 2006, se puso en uso la nueva bandeja. ¡Y ha sido todo un éxito! La nueva bandeja, por ejemplo, ofrece mayor espacio a los esquejes, lo que prolonga sustancialmente la conservabilidad de las plantas. Además, tiene el mismo color verde del logotipo de Van der Haak.

El color verde asegura su reconocimiento, lo que ayuda a nuestros clientes al momento de devolver las bandejas usadas para que podamos volver a utilizarlas. Los ejemplares que no reutilizamos los recibe Desch Plantpak para reciclarlos”, añade William van der Haak.

Durante el proceso de desarrollo también se tuvo en cuenta el apilamiento y la colocación de las bandejas en las máquinas plantadoras y su transporte en carritos daneses en los camiones. Gracias a la colocación de asas, ahora son más fáciles para

pick up and move from place to place. Perry van der Haak explains:

“To make it easy to stack and de-stack the trays, we decided to add extra stac-king ridges to the tray cells. To aid the proper positioning of the cuttings, the cells are round on the bottom, square at the top and tapered, which makes it easy to position the cuttings and stops them from moving around when they are being transported.”

Growing togetherVan der Haak and Desch Plantpak have both invested intensively in the deve-lopment of this unique growing and transport tray. After six years of use, the tray still meets all of the various requirements, to the complete satisfac-tion of P. van der Haak Handelskweke-rij and its customers. Besides this tray, Desch Plantpak produces 10.5 cm pots for Van der Haak for half-grown plants and the green transport trays used to carry them. All in all, Desch Plant-pak supplies products for the entire geranium life cycle, from cuttings to half-grown plants to finished products. Because of this, Van der Haaks slogan– ‘From cutting to plant’ – ties in seamles-sly with the motto for Desch Plantpak: ‘Growing together’.

Proprio grazie a questa forma le talee possono essere inserite facilmente e rimangono nella giusta posizione durante il trasporto.”

Growing togetherLo sviluppo di questo contenitore alvoelato per coltura e trasporto, unico nel suo genere, nasce dalla stretta collaborazione tra Van der Haak e Desch Plantpak. Dopo 6 anni di utilizzo il contenitore soddisfa ancora tutti i requisiti, con piena soddisfazione del vivaio P. van der Haak Handelskwekerij e dei suoi clienti. Oltre al contenitore alveolato Desch Plantpak produce per Van der Haak vasi dal diametro di 10,5 centimetri per piante a mezza coltura e i contenitori verdi che sono utilizzati per il loro trasporto. Desch Plantpak fornisce dunque prodotti per l’intero ciclo di vita del geranio, dalla talea al prodotto semipronto alla pianta finita. The baseThe use of obliquely placed holes optimizes the

water uptake and drainage of Desch Plantpak

pots. The bottom is constructed to prevent

unnecessary retained water and thus contributes

to creating a germ-free root environment. The

ventilation channel with holes that do not make

contact with the bottom ensure in addition an

excellent air - water interaction.

Increasingly often, growers, tray

manufacturers and automation specialists

gather to find or develop the most ideal

solution. This also happens in the world

of orchid cultivation, where propagation

is still done mainly by hand, due to the

fragility of the young plants. Together with

Jiffy Products Nederland BV, a complete

concept has been developed, where in

the first stage the tissue culture plants

are transferred into a Preforma plug with

cross-section. The Desch Plantpak stabilo

128 plug tray serves as the carrier. In the

next stage the plug is transferred into

Jiffy pots which are placed in the Desch

La automatización persiste en la propagación de orquídeas

Cada vez más se juntan vivero, productor de bandejas y empresa de automatización, para en conjunto buscar

o desarrollar la solución más eficaz. Esto también ha acontecido en el cultivo de orquídeas, sector en la cual

todavía se hace la propagación a mano, debido a la fragilidad de la planta En conjunto con Jiffy productos de

Holanda, se ha desarrollado un concepto total en lo cual se trasplanta el material de planta en vitro a un taco

preforma con corte de sierra. La bandeja Desch Plantpak Stabilo 128 cavidades para taco funciona en este

concepto como portador. En la próxima etapa se trasplanta el taco en una maceta Jiffy, ubicado en la bandeja

para orquídea de 40 cavidades. Esta bandeja, desenvuelta especialmente para orquídea, satisface exigencias

especificas referente al flujo de aire, formato y posibilidades de empilar. Todo esto tiene como consecuencia un

aumento en calidad, un tiempo de cultivo más corto, y una bandeja de costos de producción y automatización.

colturale i Jiffy pots vengono trasferiti in una vassoio per orchidee da

è stato messo a punto rispettando necessità in areazione, dimensione

e impilamento. Questi aspetti favoriscono una velocizzazione

The tree nursery tray

the tree nursery trays have a strong rim lending themselves to mechanisation, handling,

filling, planting, seeding and plantextraction. The deep cells and the vertical ribs, which

prevent spiralling and stimulate downward growth of the roots, make this tray extremely

suitable for tree nurseries. The tray has an ebb / flow bottom and can therefore be used

with various irrigation systems. As well as for tree nurseries this tray is suitable for other

cultures, for example orchids.

bordo rinforzato si prestano per la

meccanizzazione, la manipolazione, il

riempimento, l’impianto, la semina e

l’estrazione della pianta. Le profonde

celle e le scanalature verticali che

prevengono la spiralizzazione

stimolando la crescita verso il basso

delle radici fanno di questi vassoi

l’ideale per la propagazione di degli

alberi e arbusti. I vassoi hanno un

foro basale di drenaggio adatto al

flusso/riflusso e possono essere

quindi usate con vari sistemi di

irrigazione. Oltre che per il vivaismo,

questi vassoi sono adatte per altre

colture, come ad esempio le orchidee.

borde fuerte y doblado, providenciando una gran facilidad de des

empilar, mismo en las líneas automatizadas de llenar bandejas. Las

células profundas y las estrías verticales en la pared de la célula,

las cuales previenen la rotación de las raíces y promueven un

crecimiento vertical, resultan en una bandeja altamente adecuada

para el vivero forestal o de arbustos. La bandeja tiene un fundo de

drenaje a dos diferentes niveles, y por lo tanto puede ser usado en

diferentes sistemas de riego. Ella puede ser empleada no solamente

en viveros de arbusto, pero también para otros tipos de cultivo, entre

los cuales el cultivo de orquídeas.

Together with its clients, Desch Plantpak

has developed a series of nursery trays

in the Euro format. Extensive market

research has lead to the unusual butterfly

shaped structures in the cells. The tray

has already been given the name Papillon

(butterfly) in the office corridors. The first

three trays in this series are the 40, 54

and 77 cell models.

The nursery trays have the following

Múltiple uso bandejas para el cultivo

Las bandejas PS de siembra y propagación de Desch Plantpak vienen siendo usados en gran escala en

la propagación de plantas. En el año 1999, se ha desarrollado una bandeja de propagación de 60 células,

específicamente para el cultivo de begonias. Esta bandeja Jumbo 60, junto la bandeja Jumbo de 77

células, ha contribuido substancialmente al desarrollo de la automatización en el cultivo de la begonia.

Riutilizzo vassoi per la propagazione

I vassoi in Polistrirene per la semina e la coltivazione della

Desch Plantpak sono usate in larga scala per la coltivazione

delle giovani piante. Nel 1999 un vassoio da 60 alveoli è

stato sviluppato specificatamente per la coltivazione delle

begonie. I vassoi jumbo 60 e jumbo 77 hanno contribuito alla

meccanizzazione della propagazione dei tuberi di begonia.

The PS seed trays and propagation

trays from Desch Plantpak are used

on a large scale for the culti-vation

of young plants. In 1999 a 60-hole

propagation tray was developed

specifically for the cultivation of

The strawberry propagation trays from Desch

Plantpak are used successfully to raise young

strawberry plants.

Other advantages for the grower are:

Gartenbau Auer started as an agricultural busi-

ness in the Austrian capital Vienna around the

turn of the century. They switched to vegetable

cultivation after WWII and moved on to bedding

and balcony plants in the seventies. In 2008 the

company switched completely to organic cultiva-

tion. The company has been managed by Daniela

and Stefan Auer since 2002.

With their operating space of 2.5 hectares in green-houses, 0.5 hectares of polythene tunnels and 6 hectares of open ground, Gartenbau Auer is a gro-wer of considerable size. The open ground is not all under continuous cultivation, thereby giving the soil a chance to recover. They also have 12,500 m2 of solar panels in use for generating solar energy.Cultivation consists entirely of organic products: young vegetable plants, young strawberry plants and kitchen herbs. The final products are sold to super-markets, garden centres and DIY stores in Austria, Slovenia and Germany.

Why organic?‘We have begun to reconsider cultivation as it was in the past, approximately 20 to 30 years ago. We do not want to work against nature, but WITH it,’ Stefan Auer explains. The Auer family backs its products 100%. The retail chains and garden centres require 100% biodegradable packaging, so the family chose D-Grade®. Own control is very important to Gartenbau Auer, and it invests a great deal of money in residual and quality analysis, thereby building customer as-surance and trust. The company is currently working on a system for complete traceability.

¿Por qué bio? ‚Nos hemos replanteado el cultivo como se hacía antiguamente, hace unos 20 o 30 años. No queremos trabajar contra la naturaleza, sino con la naturaleza‘, declara Stefan Auer. La familia Auer está totalmente comprometida con sus productos. Las cadenas minoristas y centros de jardinería necesitan un envase que sea 100% de base biológica, de ahí que se haya elegido D-Grade®.

L’azienda agricola Gartenbau Auer è stata fondata

Perché bio?‘Siamo ritornati ai metodi di coltivazione di circa 20 - 30 anni fa. Il nostro obiettivo è lavorare in armonia con la natura e non contro di essa’, dichiara Stefan Auer. Stefan Auer explains: ‘Via a QR Code, the customer can follow the entire life cycle of the product: from sowing seed to the use of D-Grade® organic pots, as well as when and how the plants were grown. The customer is prepared to pay a little extra for such assurance and trust.’

Marketing of the products employs two slogans. The first one is: ‘Yes! Natu-rally’, and the second one: ‘Back to the source.’

The company philosophy is: ‘Producing transparently WITH nature’. Stefan Auer estimates that the growth in organic crops will be around 10 to 15% in the coming years.

Partnership between Auer and Desch PlantpakDesch Plantpak was the first producer in the world capable of providing a good organic pot that is 100% biode-gradable, with excellent behaviour in cultivation and very suitable for use in automated systems as well. A custo-mer specific print for Auer is applied to the D-Grade® pots. This is how the company meets the market demand, and D-Grade® meets all the optimum requirements set for an organic pot.
