59. Anne CARY (Miles the Virginian (Col.) 5, John draper, of Bristol 4, William the Elder of Bristol 3,Richard The Elder 2, William The Elder 1) was born about 1649 and died after 1716.

General Notes: From the will of Miles Cary: 2.b. Anne CARY, bc: 1649 unmarried. She didnot marry until her father's death in 1667. One source says she was married to Darby Daniellthe son of Roger Daniell. Darby Daniel (Roger Daniel1) was born 1629 in England, and died1698 in Virginia Statehood 1788. He married Ann Harrison Abt 1650. She was born Abt 1625.He married Anne Cary Abt 1668. She was born Abt 1639, and died After 1716. I would objectively have to suggest that Darby may have never married Ann Cary. (Whatevidence did Worth S. Ray have?). "Colonial Granville and Its People"

Anne married Darby DANIELL, son of Roger DANIELL Sr. and Ann LNU, about 1668. Darbywas born about 1629 in England and died about 1698 in York County, Va. about age 69.

Probation requested by ChristopherCOAPLAND [sic] on the estate of Henry COAPLAND [sic] December 18, 1693. Book 1689-99, pg 153.Darby Daniel's estate was appraised on Mar. 18,1698 (Order Book 1689 - 1699, page 130)According to "Colonial Granville County and It's People" by Worth S. Ray, Darby marriedAnne Cary. Darby Daniel appears to have lived as early as 1666 in Denbeigh Parish, Warwick CountyVirginia, has been linked to John Daniel of York. He died intestate, probation granted to AnnDaniell, executrix - appraisers for the orphans of Darby Daniel, Henry Robinson and JohnCooper. Appraiser for the widow, Henry Royall and George Cooper - dated 18 March 1698. A more critical look at Darby Daniel and his marital status: In Colonial Granville and It's People, Worth Ray shows the marriage of Darby Daniel to AnnCary. This Ann Cary was thought to be the daughter of Miles Cary and Ann Taylor. She wascalled by her maiden name in her father's will of 10 Jun 1667. Most Cary family researchersdo not show a spouse for Ann Cary, the daughter of Miles Cary and Ann Taylor. LDS has asubmission for the marriage with one son, James Daniel, shown as the only child. The records

give a marriage date of about 1668 for Darby Daniel and Ann Cary, but I would objectivelyhave to suggest that Darby may have never married Ann Cary. (What evidence did Worth S.Ray have?). If Darby Daniel married two women, Ann Harrison Copeland and Ann Cary, the questionarises about the order of the marriages. If his son with Ann Harrison Copeland, SamuelDaniel, et al., was born in the 1650's then Darby married her first. This being true and if hemarried Ann Cary about 1668, why was he a witness to the will of Henry Copeland of 1693(apparently still involved in the affairs of Harrison/Copeland)? For this to occur there wouldhave to be a break in the first relationship but there does not appear to have been a divorcebetween Darby and Anne Harrison Copeland. We know these facts about Ann Copeland. Her maiden name was Harrison. She first marriedHenry Copeland and had a son, Henry Copeland Jr. Henry Copeland immigrated to WarwickRiver County, VA with Captain Thomas Flint in 1637 per Early Virginia Immigrants (1623-1666) page 78. Ann Harrison Copeland's second marriage was to Darby Daniel. She outlivedher second husband. Ann Harrison Copeland Daniel's will was made in Elizabeth City County,VA on 3 October 1715, and was proved on 15 August 1716 (Book 1715-1721). Under unrelated family No. 123 ("Daniel Families of the Southern States"), Brunk Heinemannshows Darby Daniel married Ann Copeland, mother of Henry Copeland, for the followingreasons: the will of Henry Copeland in Elizabeth City County, VA, October 18, 1683, waswitnessed by Darby Daniel; it named Ann Daniel as "mother"; and it named Martha Daniel as"sister" and Samuel Daniel as "brother". He does NOT mention a marriage to Ann Cary. Thecompiler has only two records of this Darby Daniel. They are where Darby had his son JamesDaniel baptized in Charles Parish, York County, VA on April 6, 1669, and where he witnessedHenry Copeland's will. He was reported in 1669 as of "Denbergh" Parish. Based on what we already know about this family, James Daniel, the son of Darby Daniel, didmarry Ann Parker. Your compiler can accept that James was not the first born of Darby andAnn Harrison/Copeland; however, if he was born in 1669, James may have been the son ofAnn Cary. One record states that Darby Daniel married Ann Harrison/Copeland in 1668 (thesame date he is shown to have married Ann Cary), but that marriage date was more likely1650. Ann Harrison Copeland lived until 1715, outliving Darby Daniel. In order for him tohave married Ann Cary in 1668, there would have had to be a break in their relationship so thatDarby could marry Ann Cary in 1668, or a year after her father's death. 1665-1787, compiled by Landon C. Bell. One author states that James Daniel, baptized in 1669, was the son of Darby Daniel ofWarwick and Elizabeth City, Counties, VA. Another author states that James was the son ofWilliam Daniel and Sarah Williams and was a brother of Alexander Daniel of AccomackCounty, VA. Still another relates that James was probably the son of William Daniel, the sonof Hugh Daniel of Rappahannock and Essex Counties, VA. All of these seem far-removedfrom Charles City and Henrico Counties, VA, and there is no proof of these relationships. Without becoming too redundant in the possible marriage of Darby Daniel to Ann Cary, it ispossible that Worth S. Ray leaned toward the relationship between the Daniel and Caryfamilies as being close, but never proved a marriage between the two families. If you haveread his entire "Colonial Granville and Its People", you get the opinion that he wants to find arelationship between the Daniel and Cary families. With this said I will assign James Daniel toAnn Harrison Copeland Daniel and leave the final solution to future revelations. While it hasbeen suggested by one Daniell researcher that the family lineage for Roger Daniell isquestionable, your compiler does not want to argue whether this researcher or that researchermay have indulged in some creative genealogy. I believe we have enough information toconstruct a reasonable family history for Roger Daniell. It is known by record that RogerDaniell (one of them) was given something from the will of Miles Cary; (that parcel or tractof land that Goodman Heskins now lives ). Also, Mr. Ray claims that Miles Cary broughtRoger Daniel to this country. "Early Virginia Immigrants" - Daniell, Roger Sr., by Major MilesCary, Westmoreland County. If some assignments for this family are questionable, we should all be able to debate freelyour reasonable and constructive doubts about those assignments.
