This being the same land as that issued to Jacob Franklin as heretofore set out. A deed was also signed by Isaac Franklin for the same land and designated as being the estate of Jacob Franklin, deceased. Isaac Franklin to Charles Raper deed recorded in Book H-8 page 403, January 29, 1858. ---- The following biography from Franklin History report by descendant Patrick Franklin of Tulsa, 1998:

Jacob Franklin Sr. married Margaret Swinney in Cherokee County, North Carolina between Murphy

and Andrews N.C. in what is known as the Valley River Section. In later years they moved westward to

the foot of a mountain which today carries his name and is known as "Franklin Mountain". There they

reared five boys and two girls. The girls names were Sarah and Calsina. The boys names were John,

Ben, Sylvester, Jacob Jr., and Earl. Calsina married a Franklin First cousin of hers and Sarah married

Charles Raper. Charles was hanged by a mob at or near the old Franklin home. He was hanged from

a loom on which they weaved cloth in those days. This happened during the Civil War. Jacob and

Generation 2 (con't) family cemetery, on a hill near the old homesite. This cemetery had 15 or 16 graves most of

whom were Franklins. The people in that community have recently built a new Baptist church

known as Simonds Chapel just across the road from the cemetery and new graves are being

added. The Franklins left the old homesite with about six hundred acres of land and settled in

9. ANDERSON GREEN3 FRANKLIN (Abram "Abe"

2, John

1) was born on 28 Feb 1823 in Jackson County,

South Carolina. He died in 1911 in Georgia. He married Elizabeth Jane Bryan, daughter of Tarance Bryan and MaryPolly Shade on 25 Nov 1849 in Cherokee County, Georgia. She was born in Jan 1827 in Forsythe County, Georgia. She died between 1906-1910 in Georgia.

Notes for Anderson Green Franklin: Anderson Green Franklin declared that he was born in Jackson County, South Carolina in 1823.

Currently there is no county by that name in South Carolina; however, there is one in North

Carolina. It is unknown when his family moved to northern Georgia, however, he was in Georgia

by 1840. He was named for his grandparents, the Andersons and Greens. It is presumed that he

met and married his wife, Elizabeth Jane Bryant, in her birth state of Georgia. They married in

Cherokee County on November 25, 1849. By 1850, they were living in Union County, Georgia

with her sister (listed as Sofrano Bryant on the census). Twenty-six year old Anderson was living

Page 7: Descendants of John Franklin - Tracking Your Rootstrackingyourroots.com/FranklinGenetics/research/NorthCarolina...Descendants of John Franklin ... The following biography from Franklin

Generation 3 (con't) next door to his parents, Abram and Elizabeth Franklin and his brother Elias. Five of his twelve

children had been born by 1861 and Anderson was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the

Confederacy in the State of Georgia Militia during the Civil War . He was discharged in 1864.

By 1880, he and Jane were living in Pickens County. Anderson was 57, daughter Adaliga S. (Sophronia) was 16, son Anderson G. was 14, daughter Amanda was 11 and William was 8. His son

Anderson (Jr.) recalled that once a year Anderson would go to the nearby city of Rome by horse and

wagon where they would trade corn, cotton, tobacco or peanuts for sugar and other groceries. They

drove a team of oxen to church. A pension for his Confederate war service was granted and Anderson

appears on the pensioner rolls. In 1900, he was 77 and Elizabeth J. was 73; both were living in Murray

County, another county in northern Georgia. They were living with their daughter Lean (age 36) [this

should have read Adalgia Sophronia] and daughter Amanda Adcox, (age 31) who had a four year old

son Abraham. In 1908, Anderson Green Franklin submitted a claim of descendancy from an Indian

ancestor: his great-grandfather, Gardner Green. He declared that he was guardian of his grandson, Abraham Adcox, at that time. By 1910, Anderson had been widowed and is enumerated with his grandson, Sam Reese, in Gordon County. He appeared on the pension rolls until 1911; his youngest child (William E.) collected his payments for him. No record exists as to his actual date of death; it would have occurred in 1911 as there were no further payments after that year. His pension record does not record date or place of death. No gravesite has been located for either Anderson or his wife; however, grandson Harley Reese thought his wife as buried at Reeves Station and probably Anderson was buried next to her. [source: descendant Margie (Allred) von Marenholtz] Notes for Elizabeth Jane Bryan: Little is known about Jane. Family lore had her related closely with William Jennings Bryan's line;

however, this connection to the famous orator has never been verified. She did have a sister, Sofrona,

who was living with she and her husband, Anderson Franklin, in 1850 in Union County, Georgia.

Anderson and Jane Bryant had married in Cherokee County a year earlier. Jane named a daughter

Sophronia after her sister. Some of her grandchildren remember her name as being Jane; however,

those who submitted Eastern Cherokee claim applications listed her as Elisabeth Jane . In 1908, her

husband declared that her name was Elizabeth Jane Bryant on an application form. Five of her

children affirm that her last name was Bryan and that she was the daughter of Tarrence Bryan.

Records show that she had at least seven brothers and sisters. The mother of 12 children, Jane saw

at least ten grow to adults. Son Thomas died young as he appears in the 1870 census but not the

1880 and his grown siblings do not mention him by name. Son Anderson (Jr.) left home while a young

man, went to Texas and Oklahoma and raised twelve children of his own. Sons John and Abe went on

to start new lives in Oregon, with John ending up as a bachelor in Washington state and Abe returning

to Texas. The youngest, William E. Franklin, stayed in Georgia and raised his family there. The

daughters appear to have stayed close also. Jane died between 1906 and the 1910 census; her

actual grave site is unknown; however, grandson Harley Reese thinks she was buried in Reeves

Station. [bio by Margie von Marenholtz]. Anderson Green Franklin and Elizabeth Jane Bryan had the following children:

i. JOSHUA4 FRANKLIN was born on 08 Sep 1850 in Georgia. He died before 1860.

Notes for Joshua Franklin: Joshua was the oldest of twelve children of Anderson Green Franklin and

Elizabeth Jane Bryan. His birth is mentioned in his sister Sarah's Eastern

Cherokee application of 1906; however, his death is shown as "date not

recorded". He is not listed as being with his family in the 1860 census, where he

would've been ten years old; it is probable he died before this time. Nothing

further is known of Joshua; his other siblings (John, William, Mary, and Lynia) did

not mention him in their applications. 26. ii. ABRAHAM TORENCE FRANKLIN was born on 19 Mar 1852 in North Carolina. He died on 20

Jun 1941 in Terrell, Kaufman, Texas, United States. He married Sarah Elizabeth

"Lizzie" Tapp, daughter of Hugh L. Tapp and Pheobe Agnes Samples on 01 Nov 1875

in Kaufman County, Texas. She was born on 22 Aug 1860 in Georgia. She died on 13

Dec 1933 in Wills Point, Van Zandt , Texas.

Generation 3 (con't)

iii. JOHN B. FRANKLIN was born on 09 Jul 1853 in Cherokee (now Gilmore) County,

Georgia. He died on 22 Feb 1932 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington.

Notes for John B. Franklin:

John and his older brother, Abe, stopped in Texas to visit their brother, Anderson while on their way to Oregon. John was living in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington in 1907 when he submitted an application for participation in the fund for the Eastern and Emigrant Cherokees. He declared he was unmarried and was the son of Anderson Green Franklin and Elisebeth Jane Bryan. John does not appear in the 1889 Pierce County, Washington, Assessor's Census and his death certificate indicated that he had lived in Tacoma since 1890.

He mentioned that he had moved from 1953 South East Street and had relocated to 1515 South Tacoma Avenue by April 30, 1907. He relocated again by April 16th, 1908 to 405-1/2 East 25th Street. A year later, on April 7, 1908, he moved to 406 East 26th Street. By May 1910, he was a lodger on Pacific Avenue. In 1920, he was enumerated by the census taker as a roomer in the Sylvan Apartments on St. Helen's Avenue in Tacoma. He was earning a wage as a laborer in a restaurant and was 67 years of age. According to his death certificate, he had been a helper at a restaurant from the age of 54 to 74. He passed away on 22 February 1932 in Tacoma at the age of 79. His death certificate indicated that he died as a result of a head injury from an automobile accident at 10 p.m. No parentage was listed on the vital record so a correction was submitted by John's great great niece, Margie (Allred) von Marenholtz in 2000. No obituary appeared in the local paper; however, funeral arrangements were announced as being held at the Cassedy-Allen mortuary with a Christian Science service to be read. Burial was at the Mountain View Cemetery in Tacoma.

His dark granite tombstone reads: John B. Franklin

Generation 4 (con't) 26. ABRAHAM TORENCE

4 FRANKLIN (Anderson Green

3, Abram "Abe"

2, John

1) was born on 19 Mar

1852 in North Carolina. He died on 20 Jun 1941 in Terrell, Kaufman, Texas, United States. He married Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Tapp, daughter of Hugh L. Tapp and Pheobe Agnes Samples on 01 Nov 1875 in Kaufman County, Texas. She was born on 22 Aug 1860 in Georgia. She died on 13 Dec 1933 in Wills Point, Van Zandt , Texas.

Notes for Abraham Torence Franklin:

Abraham Torance Franklin was named for his grandfathers, Abraham Franklin and Tarence Bryan. His niece wrote that Abe and his brother John stopped in Texas to visit their brother, Anderson, and went on to Oregon. As Anderson's oldest daughter, Nellie, said she was quite small when they stopped by, it was probably about 1895. When the Franklin family began submitting applications for Eastern Cherokee monies in 1907, Abe's brother John stated in an affidavit that he did not know when his brother died but did state that his birthday was March 19, 1852. His sister Lynia's son Abraham Reese stated that his uncle's residence was unknown. Census checks for Oregon and Washington did not produce a match for Abe Franklin and it appears he returned to Texas. In the 1930 Mexia, Limestone County, Texas census, there is an Abraham T. Franklin, age 77, widowed, born in North Carolina, living alone. His occupation was listed as Carpenter and he was not a veteran. Abraham's burial place was finally found in Kaufman County, Texas. He died June 20, 1941 and does not have a headstone. The informant for his death record stated he was born March 19, was 89 years old, and was the son of John Franklin and Elisabeth Tapp; which is in error as his wife was Elisabeth Tapp and his brother and uncle were named John. Abraham and Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Tapp had five children.

Abraham Torence Franklin and Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Tapp had the following children:

i. LAURA ELIZABETH "LAURIE"5 FRANKLIN was born on 16 Aug 1876 in Terrell, Kaufman

Co., Texas. She died on 23 Jan 1957 in Cleburne, Johnson Co, Texas.

iii. MITTIE VERGIE FRANKLIN was born on 18 Oct 1884 in Texas. She died on 31 Oct

1971 in Waxahachie, Ellis Co, Texas. She married LEWIS L MCMAHEN. He was

born on 30 May 1882 in Georgia, USA. He died in USA.

iv. SARAH FRANKLIN was born in 1877 in Texas.

v. JOSIE EVELYN FRANKLIN was born in 1888. She died on 18 Jul 1976 in Dallas,

Dallas Co, Texas.

HENRY REESE. He was born on 22 Jun 1862 in Pickens County, Georgia. He died in 1936.

Notes for Lynia "Lini" Abigail Franklin: Lini was the mother of six children. Her son Harley stated that she and his dad belonged to the

Baptist Church, Southern Association. The last church they belonged to in Georgia was Oak Hill

Church near Cedar Grove post office. Lynia was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in 1895 and

his son didn't think there was a headstone.

Notes for William Henry Reese: All the sons of William Henry and Linea graduated from college and had degrees. William

Henry Reese's descendants show he died in 1937; however, his tombstone shows 1936.

William Henry Reese and Lynia "Lini" Abigail Franklin had the following children:

2, John

1) was born on 19 Jan 1857 in

Gilmer County, Georgia. She died on 23 Jun 1938 in Twinsburg, Ohio. She married JOSIAH PERRY

REESE. He was born on 25 Jul 1860 in Cherokee Co, Georgia. He died on 14 Sep 1892 in Georgia.

Notes for Mary Elisabeth Franklin:

Mary Elisabeth Franklin was born in 1857 in Georgia. She was the mother of five children and a widow in 1907 when she submitted her application for monies from the U. S. Government as a Cherokee Indian descendant. Her application was extremely difficult to read and there may be errors in the spellings of her children's and husband's first names.

Her descendant, Lynn Chandler, recalls this story:- I do know one story concerning Anderson and

Jane you might enjoy. I was told that when Mary was very little the War Between the States had

started. Her older brothers and sister (that would have been Abraham, John and Linny...I think that

was her family nickname), were old enough to be careful of what they said. The younger one ( Marthy)

could not speak clearly yet, but Mary could talk well and was so young they were afraid of what she

might say. Groups of soldiers from both sides frequently rode through the area (I believe they were in

North Carolina at the time). If any of the Union soldiers questioned Mary and she told about her father,

she would be in danger and so would her family. The groups of soldiers riding through were often very

undisciplined. So, her parents (Anderson and Jane) taught her to say, no matter which group of

soldiers asked her, that "My Father wears a uniform just like yours".......and

Page 19: Descendants of John Franklin - Tracking Your Rootstrackingyourroots.com/FranklinGenetics/research/NorthCarolina...Descendants of John Franklin ... The following biography from Franklin

Generation 4 (con't) she was asked.......several times. She felt a strong aversion to Yankees (even though

her daughter married one) all the way

Mary married Josiah Perry Reese. Family lore says that Perry Reese's father owned a

plantation in Pickens County, Georgia and two of his sons met and married Franklin sisters.

Josiah died 14 September 1892.

In the 1900 Calhoun, Gordon county, Georgia census, Mary is listed as Annie C. Reese, head -

widowed and 43 eyars of age. Her daughters Mary E, Emma E, Loa A., Bessie M, and son Samuel P.

Reese were living with her. She stated she was farming and that she rented her home.

Notes for Josiah Perry Reese: In the family bible (now owned by descendant Lynn Chandler, 2000), Mary entered that Perry

"departed this life September 14, 1892 aged 32 years 1 month 19 days." He was killed in an accident

at a sawmill he had started, that was located a little more than halfway up a mountain. A new worker

he had just hired did not feed a log properly and the kickback resulted in the log and some pieces of

the log that had splintered off, being sent flying. One piece hit Perry, even though he was standing

some distance away, piercing him through the chest. The rest of the story is a bit grim but that is the

essential part. Mary never remarried, and I believe, always wore black.

Josiah Perry Reese and Mary Elisabeth Franklin had the following children: i. BESSEY MAE

Generation 4 (con't) Notes for Sophrona Addie Franklin:

Sophona Addie Franklin can be found in five U. S. Censuses: 1870 as Sophrania Franklin; 1880 as Adaliza S. Franklin; 1900 as Lisa Franklin; 1910 as Safrona Manchester; 1920 and 1930 as Addie L. Manchester. Harley F. Reese wrote in 1959 that his aunt Adliza (Franklin) Machester was in on the Eastern Cherokee research and that she lived in Atlanta in 1920, which was the last he heard of her. In the 1970's, a relative also referred to her as Adlizer.

Records show that she married Francis M. Manchester and was the mother of two sons.

She died in 1951 in Gorman, Texas.

Francis M. Manchester and Sophrona Addie Franklin had the following children:

i. WILLIAM JEWELL5 MANCHESTER was born on 25 Feb 1904 in North Carolina. He died

on 11 May 1975 in Waco, McLennan, Texas.

ii. MONTE FRANKLIN MANCHESTER was born on 11 Sep 1908 in North Carolina. He died

on 07 Nov 1998 in Greenhill, Alabama. He married MILDRED ELIZABETH LOVE. She

was born about 1914 in Texas.

32. ANDERSON LANE4 FRANKLIN (Anderson Green

3, Abram "Abe"

2, John

1) was born on 25 Feb 1866 in

Jasper, Pickens County, Georgia. He died on 18 Jun 1962 in LaCrescenta (Glendale), Los Angeles County, California (Age: 96). He married Blanche Henrietta Stone, daughter of James William Stone and Nancy Jane Moore on 10 Jul 1887 in Hunt County, Texas. She was born on 21 Nov 1870 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas. She died on 29 Nov 1934 in La Crescenta (Glendale), Los Angeles County, California (Age: 64).

Notes for Anderson Lane Franklin: Anderson Lane Franklin was 96 when he died. All twelve of his children were still living and he had about 28 great-great-grandchildren. He was loved and respected by his children and grandchildren

and remembered as being a very strict disciplinarian. He was named for his father, Anderson Green

Franklin; however, he told daughter Willie that the "L" he used to sign with his first name (Anderson)

was started with the "G" being perverted by companies he bought his repair parts from. He told her

that it was easier to make an "L" than to straighten the companies on it. Anderson was interviewed on

his 94th birthday in February 1960. "I was born in Jasper, the county seat of Pickens County, about 40

miles north of Rome, Georgia. I came along about two years after the Civil War, and remember the

state of Georgia at that time. It was a mighty poor state after the Yankees took everything. 'Foraging'

they called it at the time but we'd call it robbery or stealing today." Anderson recalled that the nearest

city of any size was Rome. Once a year he would go there by horse and wagon with his father where

they would trade corn, cotton, tobacco or peanuts for sugar and other groceries. Many was the time he

drove a team of oxen to church. His only schooling was in the little log school house where the basic

"three R's" were taught. At 19, he went to Texas. For about a year he worked on a farm, picking cotton

and doing other chores. The owner of the farm decided to sell out and move to Indian Territory. He

asked the young man to go with him. "A white man was assessed $5 a year to stay in the Territory at

that time. Many of them married an Indian girl and in that way acquired some land," noted Anderson.

There was a man who had a saw mill near the town of Chickasha who hired him. The mill cut up

cottonwood lumber for the many houses being built throughout the area, shipping it as far as

Dennison, Texas, 75 miles away. Practically all the white men who were not married were outlaws,"

said Anderson. "Whenever the Law came through the Territory, about three times a year, a runner

would precede them. Alerted, the outlaws would leave the mill, mount their horses, ride off into the

hills, and not come back until danger from the Law was over." Anderson, now 21, went back to Texas

where in 1887 he married Blanche Stone and settled down for a while as a blacksmith in that state and

later in the new state of Oklahoma. He shod hundreds of horses, for which he was paid $1 each. Plow

shares were forged and hammered into shape by him which turned the soil of land that had never

known a plow before. His daughters recounted a story he told of having had a fight with another man

in Georgia when he was about 19. He thought he had killed him and moved away. Two of his brothers

looked him up in Texas on their way to Oregon in the 1890's. Many, many

Page 22: Descendants of John Franklin - Tracking Your Rootstrackingyourroots.com/FranklinGenetics/research/NorthCarolina...Descendants of John Franklin ... The following biography from Franklin

Generation 4 (con't) years later he returned to see if he could locate his parents and encountered the same man he thought he had killed years earlier. Sadly, he lost contact with his parents who had moved to another part of northern Georgia and he never could locate them again. Anderson and Blanche had twelve healthy children over a twenty year period and moved frequently throughout Texas and Oklahoma. Oldest daughter Nellie recalled that "the family left Talley Jeffcoat's place a mile or two from Blueridge, Texas when Thelma was but 1 to 2 months old" in December 1895 or January 1896. "Papa had gathered his crop of cotton and corn. We visited Uncle John (Stone) before we left. We finally landed at Aunt Bet Barnet's place - Papa found a place for us, just a few miles from Aunt Bet's place (she had 2 teenage kids, Ona, a girl, Edward, a boy. Papa made a crop there on "The Mac Carens Place". Then we moved close to Blanket, 2 to 4 miles from town where Leonard was born. Papa also made a crop there (on the Coffee place). We traded in Blanket, and once Pa took us all to trade. I've been thru there at least 4 times since I've been an old woman, it still looks the same. I've never been to Zephyr which is in the same county (Brown). But once Papa took us to Brownwood to the "Ringlin Bros" show. Brownwood is the county seat of the county, but I don't imagine there'd be any records there or even at the State Capital. I have been to Palo Pinto several times to where Oscar was born., It's still there but sure is falling into decay. When we left Blanket we gypsied around in the covered wagon, in no hurry, finally camped on the San Sabas River (Papa finally got a tent) and that's where he caught the big fish and I mean BIG. Then pa got a house on the bank of the San Saba River, we moved in, where Hixie was born. In the meantime we got acquainted with the Crump Family. They were very friendly and nice, one girl was named Hixie. Mama named our Hixie after her. Then "Old Man Crump had a well-drilling rig (or acquired one) and hired Papa to be the driller. They drilled so many dry holes they folded up and called it quits. So we drifted on, reaching Eden, Texas. I was 10 years old, so Oscar and me got to see what school was like, our teacher was a man named S. E. Van Burkleo. Moved onto Eldorado, Christoval, and I'm sure you can remember from then on. " He and Blanche also helped raise two of their grandsons, Douglas Slover and Bill Allred. Anderson was a very harsh disciplinarian who had a bad temper, especially with his older children. He would beat them for the slightest offense. Many of his daughters and grandson recounted severe beatings at his hands. Two separate incidents with different daughters recalled intervention by the local sheriff, who warned Anderson about controlling his behavior. He kicked his boys out of the house at the age of 16 as he felt he wasn't responsible for them anymore. His temper mellowed as he grew older and his younger children benefited. Even recounting tales of his harsh side, his children thought well of him and their life as a family. In 1934, Anderson came to California to join his wife after disposing of his blacksmith shop in Walters, Oklahoma. Blanche died shortly afterwards. Until his death in 1962 at the age of 96, Anderson alternately lived with one of his daughters. He lived with Thelma for a few years, eleven years with Joan, some years with Viola, and spent his final years with Inez. He had hoped to live to be 100 years old but his health started deteriorating once he broke his hip. He still had a remarkable memory at 96 and remembered even his Great-grandchildren's names when they came to visit. Papa Anderson was buried at Forest Lawn in Glendale. (©2000, Margie (Allred) von Marenholtz) Notes for Blanche Henrietta Stone:

Blanche was born in Arkansas. Her daughters said she was born in Chidester in Ouachita County;

however; when she died, her husband said that she had been born in Fayetteville, Washington

County. Her daughters also stated that her given name was Henrietta Blanche Stone; she married as

H. B. Stone and appears as Blanche H. Franklin in a census. She was always called Blanche and

that is the name on her death certificate. The family moved to Texas and Blanche was orphaned

there while still a young girl. She and her brother Hector and sisters Ella and Savannah went to live

with their father's family, Uncle John and Aunt Sally Stone. Blanche's children reported that Blanche

and her siblings lived in their uncle's house but were not treated as family. Blanche left at the age of

16 to marry Anderson Franklin. Her daughters thought she had married in Leonard, Fannin County,

Texas but she actually married in Hunt County. She and Anderson left Texas and roamed over the

southwest. She bore twelve healthy children over a 24-year period and also raised two grandsons,

Douglas Slover and William Allred. Her daughters remembered her as the perfect mother, a very

quiet woman. She read and sewed. Her hobby was making quilts. Once a year she would host a

quilting party with women who went to the same church she attended in Oklahoma. She was a

member of the Church of Christ there. Blanche suffered a stroke in 1933, after the world's fair in

Chicago, and was partially paralyzed in her left arm and leg. She was living in Duncan, Oklahoma

with her last child, Joan (Emma Jean)

Generation 4 (con't) and husband Anderson when her daughter Nona (Nannie Jane) stopped by. Nona was with her

one husband that was in show business with her on the stage in New York. Nona asked Blanche why didn't she come to Southern California with she and her husband. Blanche said to

wait a moment and went into her room and packed her clothes. She never asked Anderson,

who was working in his blacksmith shop across the street, if she could go. Nona was very

surprised but happy that her mother said yes. Six months later Anderson and Joan joined her in

La Crescenta, California. Blanche had only been in California ten months when she suffered a

cerebral hemmorhage on November 26, 1934. She passed away three days later. Anderson buried her at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale. ©2002, Margie von Marenholtz Anderson Lane Franklin and Blanche Henrietta Stone had the following children:

i. NELLIE DEMORETTA SOPHRONIA5 FRANKLIN was born on 05 Aug 1888 in Texas. She

died on 25 Jul 1987 in Madera County, California. She married (1) SIDNEY "SID" STEWART on 01 Oct 1905 in Robert Lee, Coke County, Texas. He was born in 1886 in Edith, Coke county, Texas. He died in 1942 in Edith, Coke county, Texas. She married MR. SHORTRIDGE. She married MR. BREWER.

Notes for Nellie Demoretta Sophronia Franklin: Nellie, the oldest of twelve children born to Anderson and Blanche Franklin,

has provided the early day history of the Franklin family. From hearing her sister Thelma's newborn cry to the birth of Leonard, she has shared many valuable memories for future generations. Much loved, many descendents share her name of Nellie.

At the age of 86, she was corresponding with Thelma's granddaughter. She worked at something every day - letter writing, piecing quilts, and sewing clothes for herself. She was named for her papa's sister, Sophronia. She remembers meeting two of her papa's brothers (John and Abe) when they came to Texas before going on to Oregon.

She married Sidney Stewart in 1905 and they were the parents of seven children -

Eva, Lillian, Lorene, Edith, Bessie, Nathan and Blanche. She later married a Mr.

Brewer. In 1974, Nellie lived at 645 North 7th, Chowchilla, California. Nellie died on 25

Generation 4 (con't)

Notes for Willie Belle Franklin: Willie was the third of twelve children. Born in Texas, she moved with her family to Oklahoma. She met and married her husband, Pugh Simons, there when she was 20 years old. They had three children. At the age of 75 she wrote her great niece (Margie Allred) of her parents: "A very young couple met, fell in love - decided to marry and fight lifes battles together. Twelve children were born to them. All of them dear to their hearts and made welcome. Life held many adversities they met with courage and together. And tried to do their best for the little children entrusted to their care and lived to raise them all. A wonderful man and woman - my father and mother. Wish I could tell you more about them." Willie celebrated her 90th birthday at the Older American Center with her daughter, LuVeta, and friends.

iv. THELMA BLANCHE ANDRE FRANKLIN was born on 08 Nov 1895 in Blueridge, Collin

County, Texas. She died on 05 Jul 1979 in LaCrescenta, Los Angeles County,

Notes for Thelma Blanche Andre Franklin: Thelma was the fourth of twelve children of Anderson and Blanche (Stone) Franklin.

she was born November 8, 1895 in Blueridge, Texas. Thelma was named for both of

her parents. Even though named Blanche Andrea, her mother called her Thelma after

a character in a book she had been reading. Thelma remembered early years in Texas

and picking cotton. She also had a vivid memory of her father pulling her across a river

in a large bucket with a rope line as she hung on for dear life. She told her

grandchildren (about a million times according to them) how she had taken too much

syrup for breakfast one morning and left a very large pool of it on her plate. Her father

saved the syrup for her to finish at lunch and dinner. Just syrup. The family ended up

in Duncan, Oklahoma by the time Thelma was 16. She had three beaus at the same

time and said that the Franklin girls always had lots of suitors as they were the prettiest

girls in Duncan, Oklahoma. At the age of 20, she was already employed but still living

at home when she came home to an angry father. She and a young man had attended a movie without his permission and he took off his shoe and beat her unconscious. Soon she chose Sam to marry because of what she called 'his potential.' She had been a typist/stenographer for a lawyer when he had come in for legal advice and even though she had a sort of understanding with another suitor, that gentleman wanted his mother to live with them after they married. Thelma used to chuckle that this potential mother-in-law lived to be in her 90's and that she had chosen well. Just mentioning her twelve years with Sam would brighten her up. Thelma and Sam were married nine years before their only child, Billy, was born. During the baby's birth, her husband and parents were told that she was most likely going to die. They had already used two entire bottles of ether on her. Thelma said that they had to injure her and the too-large baby just to bring him into the world. The doctors could not understand how she lived through the birth and told her and Sam not to have any more children. Thelma was terrified of becoming pregnant again and alienated her husband. She felt that she was partly to blame when he was murdered by his mistress in 1927. Billy was three. She was working as a waitress when his brother Frank came rushing in with the news. She told her granddaughter years later how important the three days were that she could talk to Sam before he died and how she still missed him over 50 years later. She dropped their son off with her

Generation 4 (con't) parents and went to Chicago to see her sister Donna and look for work. About 1930,

she remarried to an oilman named Gilbert. She left him after five weeks due to a

violent argument over child rearing. She and her sisters took the train and attended the

1933 World's Fair in Chicago, saving a program which she gave her granddaughter.

She mentioned in 1934 she was working as a cook at the Lyon's Hotel in Walters,

Oklahoma while her cousin Eva and her husband Charlie Barger spent nights in his

fields with two quilts. He lost his farm, was relocated to Carlsbad, New Mexico and

traveled to El Paso., arriving in L.A. by bus. They walked 6 miles with shopping bags to

get to Margaret's house in L.A. and that is how she managed to end up living the rest

of her life in California. Before World War 2, she was living with her son in LaCrescenta

while he attended high school. During the war she got a job as a cook for the nurses

and doctors with the Army at Elmendorf, Alaska. She mentioned that she had to

sometimes take her glass eye out to warm it so it wouldn't crack from the cold up there.

She had said that she lost her eye to disease when she was a very young woman and

that she had refused to get it replaced with a glass eye for over a year. She wore a

patch and finally her family talked her into getting an eye; her initial thought was that

the patch looked better! Thelma mentioned that in the early days, she would have to

wait six hours while an artist hand painted her glass eye to match. By the 1970's, the

new plastic eye took less than two hours and was a perfect match. Thelma met her last

husband at Elmendorf. He was 20 years junior to her and they would spend the next

thirty years together. Thelma worked as a cook when they first moved back to

LaCrescenta. She said she spent six months working for one cafe just so she could

steal the meat loaf recipe (the secret ingredient was sausage!). She then promptly quit

and she and Ray started their own cafe. Eventually she didn't have to work anymore

as Ray was doing very well as a carpenter. She had a love for crossword puzzles and

wore out her dictionary. She didn't believe in organized religion; however, did read the

Bible. Her family was very important to her and she stayed close to her sisters and

brother. Thelma had her father living with her for awhile before he decided he would

stay with Joan and her husband. She got to meet her only great-grandchildren when

they were infants and lamented that her severe emphysema taxed her strength and

stopped her from being able to pick up even the eighteen-month old. Her

granddaughter's husband, John Beaver, met Thelma after they were married a few

months and hit it off. She showed him her 1968 California Special GTS Mustang and

he went over to his Volkswagon Beetle and kicked it. Thelma was called "The Little Old

Lady from LaCrescenta" for driving such a power car. Thelma said that the grocery

clerks would take bags out for her and would keep repeating, "This is YOUR car?"

When Thelma had John take a meat loaf out of her freezer so she could prepare he

and Margie dinner, he asked Thelma, "What happened? Why can't your granddaughter

cook?" She was remembered for her handmade flour tortillas and burritos but could

also make great meat loaf. Thelma was leathery skinned from her decades in the sun

but loved the desert climate. Her home sat on one of two lots; the other lot was a giant

cactus garden that people would drive by to view. She had it appraised in the 1960's

for over $10,000 due to her collection (not all legal) of so many rare varieties. She

would eat lemons straight from the tree, laughing when her grandchildren reacted with

contorted expressions. They would watch her weeding her cactus garden and bet

whether she would ever back into her giant barrel cactus. She never did. When her

granddaughter told her years later about this, she exclaimed that she hadn't realized

how ornery her grandkids were. Thelma was a honest and caring person who liked to

scare the neighborhood children into thinking she was mean. When her grandchildren

visited one summer, neighbor children could not believe that Thelma could be a

grandma. She made a neighbor boy return the ants he was taking out of an ant hill

outside her yard. "I told him to put them back because they were my ants!" she

recounted to her granddaughter. She didn't dislike children, she just didn't want the

neighbor children to be in her garden and yard. Thelma was very special to her son

and granddaughter and very, very missed. Thelma passed away at the age of 83 after

a 20 year struggle against emphysema. She had smoked five packs of Camel

cigarettes a day for years and said she still craved

County, Texas. He died on 06 Jan 1973 in Seminole, Seminole County, Oklahoma

(Age: 75). He married Alma Iola Elizabeth Henderson, daughter of Robert Edward

Lee Henderson and Sarah Elizabeth Tweedle on 09 Sep 1922 in Waurika,

Jefferson County, Oklahoma. She was born on 22 Nov 1905 in Belton, Texas. She

died on 14 Jan 1981 in Shawnee, Oklahoma (Age: 75).

Notes for Leonard Anderson Franklin: Leonard came to Oklahoma when he was 14 years old. He lived at Tipton, Frederick and Duncan before moving to Seminole in 1929. He was married at the age of 25 at Waurika to Alma. Mr. Franklin worked at several cleaning establishments in Seminole before joining Hammons Men's Store as a tailor. He worked at that store 30 years, taking two years out to serve in the U. S. Navy Seabees during World War II. Their three children honored them with a champagne breakfast on the occasion of their 50th anniversary. A tribute to the couple was as follows: "These two very dear people have quietly endured heartaches, trials and tribulations too numerous to mention and have still found time to provide all the love and affection that their children and grandchildren could ever have hoped for." On June 20, 1962 at the age of 65, he retired and operated Frank's Tailoring Shop for four years. He died of cancer on 6 January 1973.

vi. VIOLA HIXIE FRANKLIN was born on 28 Feb 1899 in Menardville, San Sabre County,

Texas. She died on 27 Jul 1999 in Torrance, Los Angeles County, California. She

married (1) CHARLES LOUIS SLOVER on 01 Nov 1916. He was born in 1874. She

married (2) EDWARD JOSEPH BEAUPRE, son of Edward Beaupre and

AntonietteLeveille on 03 Nov 1947. He was born on 03 Oct 1902 in Quebec,

Canada. He died on 04 Jul 1959 in Ventura County, California. She married (3)

CARL PAULSON on 16 Jul 1960. He was born on 26 Oct 1900 in Denmark; Iceland.

He died on 14 Feb 1975 in La Crescenta, Los Angeles, California, USA (Age at

Death: 74). She married ERNEST ELMER THOM SR.. He was born on 09 Oct 1872 in

Iowa City, Wright, Iowa, United States. He died on 21 Aug 1944 in Los Angeles,

Los Angeles County, California.

Notes for Viola Hixie Franklin: Viola celebrated her 100th birthday in February 1999 in LaCrescenta,

California. She was born Hixie Viola Franklin, the sixth of Anderson and Blanche's twelve children. She was born on a farm in Menardville, Texas and spent her childhood in Texas and Oklahoma. Her oldest sister, Nellie, wrote that their father got a house on the bank of the San Saba River and they moved in and Hixie was born there. In the meantime they had gotten acquainted with a family by the name of Crump. They were very friendly and nice; one girl was named Hixie. Mama named Hixie after her. She later changed her first name to Viola but most of her family still called her Hixie or Vi. She was pleased to find out that she had been born on her grandfather Anderson Green Franklin's birthday. She never got to know him while he was living.

She told her grandniece of an experience she had while she was in her late teens.

She found out that her father was going to punish her when she got home so she

decided not to go home. She read that a domestic agency was looking for young

women in a neighboring town so she proceeded to walk there. After many hours on

the tracks she was close to her destination when the town sheriff saw her. He asked

where she was going and why. She showed him the advertisement and he told her

that it was a false ad to entice girls into a brothel! She told him about

Page 27: Descendants of John Franklin - Tracking Your Rootstrackingyourroots.com/FranklinGenetics/research/NorthCarolina...Descendants of John Franklin ... The following biography from Franklin

Generation 4 (con't) her father's severe punishments and the sheriff drove her home. He had her wait

in the car while he went into the house to talk to Papa. He told him what almost

happened to his daughter and threatened to arrest him if he punished her. She

said he never hit her again after that incident. While a young woman she had a very short marriage with Charles Slover. She

had a son, Douglas, who preceded her in death. Her younger son, Ernest Thom, lived in Torrance and visited her daily at her home. She lived in La Crescenta for over seventy years. Vi married his father in Mexico, where she lived for a time and learned to speak Spanish. Years later, she owned a Mexican restaurant, where she made the best chili rellanos in the area. It was called El Charro and was located in downtown Montrose.

Her family said that Vi liked to say that she was the sickly one as a child, but that

she lived the longest as an adult. Viola, herself was proud of reaching the century

mark, although she would occasionally say that she was still 99! She had charm, style,

and grace. She never got old in spirit, just in years. In her heart, she was still young:

playing on the beach with her children, exploring the countryside of Oklahoma and

Texas, having lunch with her friend, and laughing with her sisters. She passed away

quietly, still able to tell stories of her childhood days. She had her sense of humor to

the end, and she said that growing old was not easy, but she was doing fine,

surrounded by the beautiful cards and flowers from her friends and family. A short

time before she died, she compared herself to the old, wilted roses. Viola wrote in her

diary, "I have a mirror that is from ceiling to floor. It shows me such an old woman

lying on the bed. Everytime I look at the way she is staring at me, I stick my tongue

out at her and she sticks hers right back"! In February, she celebrated her 100th birthday with her friends and family. It was a

festive occasion and she enjoyed visiting with everyone. She often remarked that it

was a good thing that her friends were younger than she was! She said that, over the

years, she had such good friends. She said that they came all the way to Torrance to

visit her. She worried that it was such a long drive. She was so happy that they did not

forget her. Vi looked forward to her Ernie's visits, and the beautiful roses he would

bring her. She always tried to entice him into a game of blackjack, which, of course,

she liked to win. She also looked forward to visits from Ernie and Phyllis and their two

sons, Chris and Mike. She was proud of the way that they turned out, and remarked

that they, "Never gave us any trouble." She loved seeing Chris's wife, Kelley, and their

daughter, Angelika. She kept their pictures on her dresser, along with those of other

good friends and family members. He also enjoyed visits from Douglas's two

daughters, Nancy and Susie and their children. She visited with her sole remaining

sibling, Joan, over the phone. She loved Las Vegas and just a week prior to her passing, she talked about

getting her hands on the handle of a slot machine again! She said that she never came back a winner but she never lost much. When she could no longer go to Las Vegas, she asked her family to put $10 in quarters in a machine for her.

She loved to swim and her family has a picture of her in a swimming pool in her nineties. She was very independent. A couple of weeks before her death, she said that she thought she could still drive a car. She remembered how to shift but her family was not sure that she remembered how to put on the brakes!

Over good times and bad times, Viola was sustained by her faith. It was her faith

that gave her comfort in difficult times, and serenity in her old age. She moved to La

Crescenta in 1926, and became a member of the Christian Life Church in 1930. She

held many voluntary positions in the church. Among those positions were Sunday

School Superintendent and adult bible school teacher. In her diary, she recalled a

passage from the Bible, "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed

down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the

measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Luke 6:38) In 1997, she moved to a convalescent center in Torrance to be closer to

Ernie. In her diary, she wrote, "I am expecting Ernie to come any minute. He comes most every day. I did a good thing when I gave birth to him. My life would be very lonely without him. He has been a wonderful son. God bless him for always doing things for me."

Page 28: Descendants of John Franklin - Tracking Your Rootstrackingyourroots.com/FranklinGenetics/research/NorthCarolina...Descendants of John Franklin ... The following biography from Franklin

Generation 4 (con't) Vi also wrote that it would be nice to see Jesus, who has guided her all through

her life. She said she wished that she had never displeased Him, but, through his

great mercy, He forgave her. "One of these days I shall see him face to face." She passed away in July 1999 and is buried at Forest Lawn in Glendale

next to her sister, Inez.

vii. DONNA DEANNE FRANKLIN was born on 15 Jun 1901 in Christoval, Tom Green

County, Texas. She died on 12 Nov 1989 in San Diego, San Diego County,

California (Age: 88). She married JOHN "JACK" O'CONNELL. He was born about

1892 in Ireland. He died before 1930 in Oklahoma. She married AL ARMSTRONG.

Notes for Donna Deanne Franklin: Donna was the seventh child out of twelve children. She was born with the name of Dora Dean and changed it to Donna Deane. She was living in Chicago in 1927. Her first marriage was to Jack O'Connell. They adopted three children: James, Barbara and Bruce. She was married second to Al Armstrong. She lived at 4290 Bullion Avenue in 29 Palms, California in 1974. Donna died in November 1989 in San Diego County and is buried at 29 Palms Cemetery.

viii. NONA JEAN FRANKLIN was born on 20 Aug 1903 in Christoval, Tom Green

County, Texas. She died on 14 Jul 1991 in San Diego County, California. She

married NORMAN L TOMPKINS. He was born on 18 Mar 1921 in Berkshire, Tioga,

New York USA. He died on 02 Apr 1958 in Meriden, New Haven, Connecticut

USA. She married LEE BARRON. He was born about 1900.

Notes for Nona Jean Franklin: Nona was born on August 20, 1903 in Christoval, Texas, the eighth of twelve children of Anderson and Blanche (Stone) Franklin. Nona changed her name from Nannie Jane. She said that after she changed it, she found out that Nona means Auntie in Spanish. Her youngest sister, Joan, recalled that Nona and Inez came home late one evening. Papa was waiting to punish both of them. He whipped Inez but when it came for Nona's turn, she would have none of it. She grabbed the rope being used from the porch swing and wouldn't let go of it. Papa did his best to strike her with it but Nona was determined not to let go. Finally Papa gave up and went to bed. Nona had won the battle. She was always determined. Nona was also an actress first and foremost. She had stood in for silent screen actresses before going on the stage herself. She performed on stage in numerous productions back east in New York. One of her six husbands was an actor on stage with her. Occasionally she would appear in blackface and had photos of herself performing on stage. She sang and danced and at one time appeared in a knife-throwing act. Her sister Joan asked Nona why she let someone throw knives at her. Nona replied that he was really good at it and knew what he was doing. Nona was married several times; the only husband whose name is remembered is Lee Barons; although her last marriage was to a Mr. Tompkins. She humorously confided to her sister Thelma's granddaughter that she kept marrying because she wanted a baby and knew it wasn't her fault that she couldn't have one! Nona said that she was back east and adopted a baby boy by lying about her age. She said she got him within a couple of days of applying and that it was the happiest day of her life. She named him Glenn and always talked about him. Her favorite photo was of him at school as a young boy. She really enjoyed his twins after he grew up and married. In 1986, she met her grandniece's children, Tara and Ryan Beaver, from Washington state. She asked them if they wanted to play poker. When they didn't know what it was, she very dramatically exclaimed, "What! You can't be MY niece and nephew if you can't play poker!" She then very patiently

taught the ten and eleven year olds how to play using match sticks to bet with.

Nona told of visiting her son in Tennessee and going by bus to the Grand Old Opry. She struck up a conversation with the bus driver who told her that the old

and infirm were always placed in the front row. Nona thought this was a great

acting opportunity and hobbled off of the bus, into the Opry, and into the front row. Nona was very happy when her son moved out to California. She had emphysema in her later years from smoking and attributed it to her doctor who had told her to start smoking to relieve stress. She spent her final years in the Villa Rancho Bernardo Convalescent center in San Diego, dying there on July 14, 1991, at the age of 87.

ix. INEZ JAN FRANKLIN was born on 16 Feb 1906 in Edith, Coke county, Texas.

She died on 02 Feb 1979 in Orange, Orange County, California. She married

DAVID MARTIN. He was born about 1903.

Notes for Inez Jan Franklin:

Aunt Inez was born Inez Doris Franklin on February 16, 1906 in Edith, Coke County, Texas. She changed her middle name to Jan although she sometimes signed artwork as Jan Martin. She was an accomplished artist with well over 15 years' experience and had a showing at the Verdugo Hills (California) Art Association of her watercolors and oils. Inez worked in oils, watercolors, cassein, just about all painting media. Her paintings ranged from portraiture to landscapes and still-lifes. For an interview with her job as an inspector at an electronics plant in Pasadena, she mentioned that an oil portrait represented about a month's work with brushes and palette knife, while she might spend as short a time as one afternoon on a watercolor scene. Inez never had any formal training and chose painting as her hobby and taught herself the intricacies of fine arts and the technical skill that go with talent in painting.

She was married to Dave Martin, a sailor, for a long time, according to her sisters Vi and Joan. They divorced and she never remarried. They never had children of their own; however, she was well-known to her many nieces and nephews as a wonderful person. She is remembered best as living in La Crescenta with her dogs. Her last dog was Mitzi. She and Mitzi made all children feel welcome at her home. She wrote Thelma's granddaughter for many years and sent her an afghan she made. Although she sold many of her paintings, Inez gave artwork to her sisters and brothers and their children.

She cared for her father, Anderson, for many years until he died at the age of

96 at her home. Inez died at the age of 72 at UCI Medical Center in the city of

Orange on February 2, 1979. She is buried at Forest Lawn Park in Glendale. x. JOHN ABE "BUSTER" FRANKLIN was born on 21 Jan 1908 in Stanton, Martin County,

Texas. He died on 03 Feb 1994 in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. He

married Elva Woulanda Adams on 02 Jun 1941 in Glendale, Los Angeles

County, California. She was born in Madison, Greenwood County, Kansas.

Notes for John Abe "Buster" Franklin: John Abe "Buster" Franklin was born January 21, 1908 in Stanton, Martin County,

Texas. He was the tenth of twelve children born to Anderson and Blanche (Stone)

Franklin. He was 33 years old when he married Elva Adams on June 2, 1941 in Glendale, California. He served in the Army from 1942 through 1945. Buster and

Elva had a son and a daughter. He worked for 22 years with the City of Glendale

in Sewer Maintenance. He was residing in Burbank when he passed away on

February 3, 1994. He was 86 years old. Burial was at Valhalla Memorial Park in

North Hollywood on February 8, 1994. xi. MARGARET ELLA FRANKLIN was born on 10 Feb 1910 in Throckmorton,

Generation 4 (con't) Throckmorton County, Texas. She died on 24 Jan 1996 in Laguna Hills, Orange

County, California. She married (1) T J VANCE, son of George A. Vance and

Jessie A. Sulliman on 15 Apr 1943 in Lonoke, Lonoke, Arkansas. He was born

on 04 May 1917 in Wickliffe, Ballard, Kentucky. He died on 21 May 1985 in

Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina (Age: 68). She married XOCHITL YATES

ZEVELY. He was born on 19 Oct 1903 in Oregon. He died on 13 Jul 1979 in Dade

County, Florida (Age: 75).

Notes for Margaret Ella Franklin: Margaret lived on 390 Kenilworth Road in Ashville, North Carolina in 1974. She moved to California after the death of her husband, T.J., in 1985. She was in San Juan Capistrano and lived near her sister, Joan, before her death in 1996. Margaret had no children. Joan remembers her sister as a dainty sewer. The portrait that Joan painted of her was given to her great grand niece, Margie Allred. Margaret's birth name was Ella. She spent her early years in Texas. Like most of her eleven brothers and sisters, she went by another name. In the 1930's, she was briefly married to X. Y. Zeveley, whom divorced her. She was 17 years old when her three-year-old nephew, Billy Allred, came to live with her parents. He always loved her and named his daughter for her.

xii. JOAN CAROL FRANKLIN was born on 04 Sep 1912 in Duncan, Stephens County,

Oklahoma. She died on 25 Mar 2000 in Capistrano Beach, Orange County,

California. She married Chester Louis "Chet" Shuler, son of Leo L Schunicht and

Katherine Meehan in 1935. He was born on 18 Aug 1912 in Jefferson, Kentucky.

He died on 10 Mar 1995 in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California.

Notes for Joan Carol Franklin: Emma Jean was the youngest of 12 children born to Anderson and Blanche Franklin.

She was born and raised in Oklahoma and was the last child left at home. In high

school she was a member of an all girl's basketball team and was working as a clerk in

1934 when her mother moved to California. She continued living with her father for

about six months then he sold his blacksmith shop and they both went to California to

join her mother. She met Chet Shuler and married him in

1935. During World War 2, she worked to support the war effort. She was a member of

the Woman's Ambulance and Defense Corps of America in Culver City. She

corresponded with Chet in Panama for the duration of the war. For eleven years she

cared for her widowed father in her and Chet's two-bedroom home. They were elated

when they were allowed to adopt an infant boy. They named him Paul and asked

Anderson to not be at home when the adoption overseers came to inspect the house

because they were supposed to guarantee the baby had his own room. Joan's father

was livid and packed his bags and moved in with another of his nine daughters. He

never stayed with them ever again! No matter, Chet and Joan raised Paul, who had

been a joyous addition to their lives. Meanwhile, in the 1960's, Chet presented Joan

with a present of paints and canvas. Joan laughed and tucked the gift into a closet for

quite a long time. Joan's sister, Inez, was the painter, not her. Chet recognized that

she also had a creative streak. Finally, Joan dug out her new paints and began a

fruitful career as a painter. She sold many of her canvases in all types of medium and

gave a large amount away. She would paint neighbor children and relatives' portraits.

Examples of each type of medium she worked were always on display in her home in

San Juan Capistrano - oils, watercolors, and sculpture. When Joan visited her nephew

Ernie Thom's home, she found a gallery of her paintings he had purchased. Joan was

very happy to see her work on display. She and Chet celebrated their 60th anniversary

together before finding out that he had a terminal illness. Since his passing, Joan

would have an evening toast to her Chet each evening - a very strong martini. Her

step-grandson lived with her in San Juan Capistrano. She was very close to her late

son's wife, who helped her celebrate her 87th birthday in September, 1999.

Generation 4 (con't) Notes for Louis M. Franklin:

Louis M. Franklin's Eastern Cherokee Application [10801] is extremely hard to follow regarding his

listing of relatives. The application asks him to list his grandparents' children; of which he lists Jane,

Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Lina, Sabra Ann, George Washington, Wesley, John, William, Louisa (married

Morgan), Mary J, Caroline, Elizabeth and Susaner Franklin - he does not indicate which set of

Franklin grandparents they belong to. He signed with an "X" with H. C. Richardson as his witness. It

appears that both of his parents' surnames were Franklin; it is unknown whether they were cousins or

related to each other. Examination of relative's applications may clear this up. His application was grouped with applications 10802, 19647, 19648 and 18862; the
