He also served with Captain Joseph Colvin’s Company of Kentucky militiafrom Bourbon County in General “Mad Anthony” Wayne’s campaign of 1794, in which he foughtagainst the Indians at the Battle of the Fallen Timbers near Defiance, OH, and was wounded in the thigh.
George Purtee and his first wife, whose name may have been “Elizabeth,” married about 1783 and settledin Washington County, PA. They moved to Bourbon County, KY, in 1790, where they lived on landsouth of Millersburg on Hinkston Creek. In 1803 George Purtee and his family moved near Peebles inMeigs Township of Adams County, OH, where he worked as a farmer and made wine.

Heworked as a farmer in Meigs Township of Adams County, OH, until 1844, when he and his family movedto Clay Township of Highland County, OH. In 1847 James Purtee and his wife moved with the familiesof several of their children to Boone Township of Madison County, IN, where he was the first white manto settle on former Miami Indian Reservation lands.
James Purtee was a member of the United Brethren church. His house was the home of an itinerantpreacher in Ohio and Indiana, and was a regular preaching place.

The 39th Ohio Volunteer Infantry suffered one-third casualties inthat battle. John Purtee died in a field hospital at Marietta, GA, about two months after his leg wasamputated.
