General Notes: The Miley family has been a part of Ohio history since 1820 and Fulton County historysince 1839. The family name is German (spelled Meiley in Germany) and all the Mileys in the Delta areaare descendents of John Miley, who was born in Germany in 1784, John immigrated to this country byselling himself as an indentured servant for sixty dollars to a man in Philadelphia. After a dozen yearshard work he was able to become independent, married, and moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio. His wifewas Eva Schuler of Pennsylvania German descent, and they had seven sons and one daughter. He was amoving, but thrifty agriculturist, improving his fortunes, it is said, with each of his frequent changes, untilhe finally settled on and purchased a farm of 160 acres in Holmes County, Ohio, where he died. All of his children were residents of their own farms in prosperous condition

General Notes: Delta, Ohio Area History, written 1990 MILEY, BENJAMIN F. F288 His Heritage and Descendents The Miley family has been a part of Ohio history since 1820 and Fulton County history since 1839. The family name is German (spelled Meiley in Germany) and all the Mileys in



the Delta area are descendents of John Miley, who was born in Germany in 1784, John immigrated to this country by selling himself as an indentured servant for sixty dollars to a man in Philadelphia. After a dozen years hard work he was able to become independent, married, and moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio. His wife was Eva Schuler of Pennsylva- nia German descent, and they had seven sons and one daughter. Their third son, George, was born in 1816 and it is George's descendents that people Fulton County and Delta. George married Letitia Wells of Wayne County on Dec. 23, 1821 and they had seven boys and two daughters. The second son, Benja- min, my grandfather, was born July 4,1842, "a Yankee do or die"! One can see why he was proudly named Benjamin Franklin Miley. Shortly thereafter great-grandfather George moved his family to a piece of land in Clinton Township, south of Wauseon, which he had purchased from the government for $1.50 an acre. Grandpa Ben said, "In those days there was no Wauseon, no railroad, and few settlers", and he could have added "and no Delta - just timber and swamp stretching everywhere." Grandpa enlisted in the Union Army as a volunteer in 1861, served along the Mississippi in the infantry, but was discharged at St. Louis the next year on disability. The following year, however, he joined the "C" Company of the 10th Regiment of Ohio Cavalry and saw service in Sherinan's "March to the Sea". He was five days and nights in the saddle in the battle of Atlanta and was taken prisoner near Macon, Georgia. He was sent to dreaded Andersonville Prison, where he was saved from death only by the end of the war. Grandpa returned from the war to farm and live ninety-four years. He was a "Black" or Lincoln Republican all his life. Once during an election year my dad asked him how he was going to vote, and he replied, 'I vote the way I shot!" Four of Grandpa's brothers were also in the Union Army and all returned to northeastern Ohio to have families. One brother, Levi (Uncle Doc') became a physician in Chicago and lived to be 101. His formula for a long life was simple: "Always leave the table a little hungry". Grandpa's youngest sister, Laura, was born in 1861 and became the wife of Dealton Boyers, of Fulton County. On their mother's side the Bert Shaffer family, of Delta, is descended from Laura's daughter, Florence. I have a wonderful family photograph given me by Donald Shaffer, Florence's son, showing a gathering at Grandpa's farm southwest of



Deltaon July 4,1892, to celebrate his birthday. There are 36 people in the photo, including Great Grandpa George and Great Grandma Letitia. Grandpa Ben had two families. One by Abbey Walter who died in midlife, and a second by Esther Stevens, Abbey's cousin, whom he married in 1885. There were six children in his first family: Bert, Walter, Fred, Bertha, Alex and Ernest, the last five of whom lived their lives in the Delta area. Uncle Ern was a familiar sight in Delta as a rural mail carrier for the Delta Post Office. One of Aunt Bertha's children, Paul Watkins, still lives in Delta with his wife Nellie. Uncle Fred's daughter, Gladys (Mrs. Ronald) Hable, lives also in the Delta area. There were three children in Grandpa's second family: Jay, Grace and LaVerne. Uncle Jay's children, Bob & Jane, both graduated from Delta High School. Aunt Grace married George Turnbull, a renowned musician who spent many years developing high school and town bands in Delta, Swanton, Liberty Center, Wauseon and Napoleon. LaVerne, my mother, was a 4th grade teacher in the Delta Elementa- ry School and director of the choir at the Church of Christ; and when my father, A.C. Lambert came to Delta to be the minister of the church, they were married. I am the oldest of LaVerne's children. A brother, Reginald is second, and a daughter, Adrienne Grace, now deceased, was third. After the untimely death of my parents, "Gracie" came to live with George and Grace Turnbull and graduated from Delta High School. The Miley family has been connected histori- cally with the churches of Christ and Christian Churches since Great-great-grandfather, John, and his wife joined the movement to restore New Testament Christianity after they were first married. Great-grandfather George did some preaching and Grandpa Benjamin was the first elder in the Delta Church of Christ. The first meetings to organize the church in Delta were held in my grandparent's home in 1887 and the church came into exis- tence on August 5,1888, with 105 members. I am writing this history only because my father, a minister, met my mother at the Delta Church. I too am a minister of the Church of Christ. This account is unfairly brief. Any of Grand- pa Ben's other descendents would have written it differently, but I hope I have left a record
