Notes for Peter Myer:Source: Information on children is from family bible; reported by Edith M. Chastain ([email protected])

His character complified that word integrity, and that word describes him perfectly. He was honest, jealous of his good name, and would not do a thing that he knew would be wrong; no difference what pressure was brought to bear on him. One of his sayings was, "I can see deep into the millstone as the man that picts it." Meaning, that he could see the object of the person trying to influence him. He stood firmly against wrong. Another of his maxime was this, "If you have someting to do, do it now, for what you think is time enough will always prove to be little enough."He had firmness of character, yet he had a tender heart.Proof of this is a story handed down in the family:This incident occurred while he still lived in Pennsylvania. A very needy family living near them had borrowed and borrowed, never paying back, till grandfather concluded, "Forbearance had ceased to be a virtue," so he told his wife to quit letting them have. They came to borrow salt soo, but were refused. I expect Peter's conscience troubled him fo after eating his supper we went over to this neighbors. He found the family gathered around the supper table. There was nothing on the table but a dish of mush. The children were crying and refused to eat the mush. He asked the mother why they would not eat it. She said, "I had no salt and they won't eat it because it is not salted. He couldn't stand that and told mother to send to his house in the morning and get salt, and then went home and told his wife to let them

have it as he couldn't bear to see little children refuse to eat mush for the want of salt, especially when mush was all they had to eat.

As further proof of his tender heart, he could not bear to make anything suffer. So when there was a mutton to be killed, he would tie the sheep up and turn his back while grandmother chopped its head off. Now don't say he hid behind his wife's petticoats, for she was always ready to do a thing, if necessary. As we say now, "She had her nerve." Quietness was another of his characteristics. In fact of all the Myers they were never demonstrative. When sorrow comes to them, they endured in silence, but oh, their sad faces revealed their sufferings.

His death occurred, April 5, 1856, at his home near where Blue River Church now stands in Marion (Union) Township, Shelby County, IN.

As the story goes, in the spring of the year 1830, Peter lost his farm by an old soldiers claim, as it is always expressed. I regret that I do not know what war these soldiers had fought in more by what authority they were granted the privilege of selecting a farm as a recompense for their services. It is said that as it may, Peter's farm was chosen by one of them. This left him at the bottom of the ladder which he was compelled to climb again. One day they saw a man walking around over Peter's farm inspecting it one spring morning in 1830. Presently he came to the well to get a drink and sat down on the well curb to rest. He told Peter he had chosen his farm. Peter then decided to come west to start this climb. We don't know how many families joined him in this move but am sure there were some.

They started west in the fall of 1830. The children of the wagon party would get tired of riding and would get out of the wagons and run away ahead and play at the roadside till the wagons caught up, then run ahead again. In this way the children walked a good part of the way to Indiana. Coming across Ohio they encountered now crushed stone roads which wore their cattle's feet till they were so sore they had to have the cattle shod as they did the horses. This is the way the roads were being built; Men were sitting along the road at intervals by piles of stone, crushing the stones with hammers. One overseer was inspecting the work to see that each piece was small enough to pass through a two inch ring.

When they reached Indiana, they first lived in the edge of Rush County, but not for long. Their next location was South of Ray's Crossing in a German neighborhood. Later they moved from Ray's Crossing, then called the Berman Settlement, to the home near the Blue River Chapel. We think this was around 1837. Peter and Susannah both died at their home on this farm and their boddies are interred in the Blue River Chapel Cemetery adjoining their farm.

Notes for Susannah Bardell:Susannah Bardell possess strong will power and self control, If an unpleasant task confronted her she just kept her nerved and did it. But she was possessed of a sense of honor, as a little incident, for which we are indebted

to Cousin Marshall, shows. This is it, but first I must tell you that Susannah was at the head of Peter's household after the death of his first wife, Marshal and Levi's mother. One day, Peter told Susannah he was going away on an errand. Seh told him to be back by twelve o'clock as dinner would be ready then. He overstayed the time one hour. Susannah met him in the yard and taking off her sunbonnet, switched him over the head with it, which shows that a little fun now and then is relished by the best of men. She was kind and helpful in her neighborhood. When there was sickness and trouble in the neighborhood "Aunt Susie" as she was familiarly called, was sent for. Why that name, "Aunt Susie" just radiates kindness.

Susannah Bardells ancestry was English and French.

She was born 24 Sep 1809 in Norwegian, Berks Co., PA, and died 02 Jun 1875 in Fairbury, Livingston Co., Illinois.

Notes for Eli Myer:History of Livingston County

Eli Myer was born to John Myer and Ann Charity Wire Myer in Alleghany county, Maryland on October 18, 1796. He had ten brothers and sisters; John, William, Jacob, Peter, David, Elizabeth, Susannah, Sarah, Mary, and Elijah. Eli married Susan McDaniel who died in 1830. From this union they had five children: Margaret Ann, John Asa, Matilda Jane, Martin Henry and Samuel James. On the 12th of April 1831 Eli married Catherine Umphenour to whom were born eight children; Emily, William, Joseph E., Matilda, Benjamin, Samuel G., Charles F. and Nelson Jay. In 1832 he left Maryland for the "west" traveling into Ohio where he engaged in farming until 1850. On October 25, 1850 he reached Eppards Point Township where he entered a clain for the first quarter section of land entered at the grove in this township. He added tohis holdings until he owned 478 acres which he willed to his children at his death. When the Myer family arrived in Eppards Point it was not the garden spot it is today. They found the township an open prairie containing but two other families who were located at some distance along the grove. Their principle market was Ottawa to which they made many trips in a wagon over prairie roads, fording streams. At first they occupied a house which was 14 by 16 ft. and built of logs. They added to this and then built a frame house. Eli was well known over a large territory as a man of great public spirit who took a keen interest in the general welfare of his fellow man, assisting many of his hospitality, counsel and encouragement. He held the office of associate Judge for several years and later after the township was organized that of supervisor and clerk. He also taught the first school held in Eppards Point. On November 16, 1861 Eli and others organized a church at Ocoya, holding the services in the school house. Eli Myer served as a deacon in this church until the time of his death. After organizing the church they began at once to plan the erection of a church building and in his will he provided a gift of six hundred dollars to be used for the purpose. He died on the 30th of December 1868 at the age of seventy-two years. On the farm where Fred Harold Seeman, a great-great-grandson of Eli, now lives in section 29 of Eppards Point Township you can still see the old prairie trail which led through this farm and the ford where they crossed Rooks Creek. The large rock just east of the ford is where the women washed their wool, dried it and spun it into thread to weave for clothing and blankets. Long before the close of the nineteenth century the descendants of Eli Myer began plans for the first annual Myer Family reunion. It was though appropriate to begin these gathersing by hoding the first one at the "Old Home" onthe one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Eli Myer. for some reason however this plan was not realized as no reunion was held until October 18, 1902; this being the 106th anniversary of his birth. Eli's son Samuel G. Myer had a son, Joseph G. who married Mary Smith. They had four children; Florence Aldine, Cliffort Joseph and twins, Merle Roland and Myrtle Belle. Myetle Bell Myer married Fred Louis Seeman on Nov. 26, 1925. they had four children. Nature and farming is taking away what is left of the prairie trail, but at the ford in the creek many generations of children have had many good times playiing on the "big rock" that was mentioned earlier. Fred Harold Seeman Married Dottie Lynn Hoyt. Their children are Brian Harold, Karen Lynn,

Marsha Ann, and Julie Leanne. Ontheir farm in section 20 of Eppards Point Township you can find the well from the homestead of Eli Myer, a man whose courage, hospitality, industry, and integrity won for him the love and respect of his neighbors and friends, and set a high standard for us who should follow after him. - By Dottie Seeman

----------------------------------------------Eli's son, Franklin, had all of these dates in his family bible. Mrs. I. M. Carmony also supplied the same years for birth of the children: but not month and day. Both sources put the marriage of John and Annie in 1778. Marriage dates of William, Peter & Eli are from family records, the others from Cumberland and Frederick Court house records. Evidently Jacob, David, Susanna, and Elijah died in infancy.

Born on a farm north of Cressaptown, Allegheny Co., Md. about 5 miles from Cumberland. Eli had only three months of formal education in his life. He educated himself while working at a loom in his home, keeping his book beside him as he worked. He married Susan McDaniel with whom he had 5 children, 2 of which lived to adulthood. Married Catherine Umphenour after the death of his first wife and shortly after the birth of their first child in May 1831, moved by covered wagon to Licking Co., Ohio where six of his next seven children were born. In 1848 he rode with his father-in-law (Abraham Umphenour) to Illinois to see land. They were helping Thomas Craycroft move to Danville and stopped there at the land office, making claim to farms for himself and a number of his adult sons in Eppards Point Twp., Livingston Co. The entire family moved there the following year - including the children who had been left in Maryland.Eli- occupation: farmer, Justice of the Peace, school teacher.

He became a leading citizen of the local community becoming Justice of the Peace and forming the first school in the Twp., which was held in his own home. His home measured 14 x 16. It had a loft for sleeping purposes - for the two parents and eight children. They always had room for travelers over night and shared what they had with others. In 1853 the settlers got together and cut logs for a school house, and raised the new school along Rooks Creek. It was covered with shakes held in place by weight poles, had a sturdy wooden door and a box stove for warnth, a luxury in those days.

He served several terms as an Associate Judge with B.P. Babcock and John Darnall. It was while he was Associate Judge that the first brick courthouse was built in Livingston County. At the same time they were instrumental in contacting a bridge to be built over the Vermillion River.

He was a founding member of the Ocoya Baptist Church, organized Nov. 16, 1861. It was held in the school house.

He had 3 sons fighting for the Union in the Civil War and apparently also nephews who fought for the Confederacy for Virginia. He lived in Livingston Co., until his death in 1868.

In 1930 Myer Reunion notes, it was noted that Eli Myer had 186 known descendants, 13 children, 37 grandchildren, 79 great grandchildren, 56 gr. great grandchildren, and 2 gr. gr. great grandchildren. Of his sons, only Charlie (age. 83) was still living.

Notes for Charles Francis Myer:Occupation: farmer.Came to Livingston Co., Illinois from Licking Co., Ohio as a small child and was raised on the Eli Myer farm. As a child, he lost 2 fingers from his right hand when his brother Sam thought he would move his hand while he was chopping corn. Although he had two brothers who fought in the Civil War, his missing fingers and his youth prevented his participation. He related that when the family first moved to the township, his Uncle Sam walked him down to the timber and showed him an old Indian wigwam and a large mound of ricks that the Indians used as a stove.

After his father's death in 1868, he took over the farm, farming it until his retirement in 1916. He lived with his son Harry for a while after retiring, but could not get along with his son's mother-in-law, Alice Smith, who was also living there, so he lived for some years in the 20's with Sherman Myer. He moved back about 1930 and lived with his son until his death. ----------------------------

Death Claims Mrs. WalkerWell Known Woman Passes Away At St. Mary's Hospital

Death yesterday afternoon clamed Mrs. Edith Walker at St. Mary's hospital at 3:50. Mrs. Walker had been sick about two years but her death yesterday was a profound shock to the family and her many friends. The deceased had spent her entire life in this city, and since the death of her husband, Henry Walker , had lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Connor. Mrs. Walker's mother, Mrs. Connor, passed away several years ago, however amid much sorrow, especially on the part of the daughter, who was a very close companion to the mother. Useful LifeMrs. Walker lived and had such a useful life, her friends could not believe at first that she was sick. She was very active, efficient and in the neighborhood which she lived had no small reputation as a wonderful housekeeper. She was born in Manville, Dec. 15, 1876. Twenty three years ago she was united in marriage to Henry Walker who preceded her in death. Two children, Mrs. Stella Belle Ryan of Ransom, and Lawrence Walker of this city survive. The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church. Amos Connor, her father, and these brothers and sisters survive: Florence and Grace Wisher of Moline; Wayne, Sam, Edward, and Earl Connor of this city and Stella Notman of Maywood. funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 from 117 West Kent street. Rev. Connor will read the service and burial will be made in Riverview. Mrs. Walker's death has caused a great deal of sorrow in this city. She had many friends who join in giving sympathy to the family and in grieving over the loss of a beautiful soul.

* Edie Walker Branz, said her grandmother had died of pernicious anemia.------------------------------------------------------------

Edith and Henry must have divorced around 1904....he is not listed in the city directory and she is listed as "Mrs. Edith Walker" widow of Henry. Perhaps they did not divorce afterall....only separated.

Notes for Henry Walker:1997-( Grandson), Dale Walker reported that Henry's partner shot him. Henry died from blood loss - fatal wound. The partner went to jail and years later came back to Streator and Henry's son, Lawrence Walker hired him at Anthony's (truck lift gate manufacturing co. where Lawrence worked as a foreman.)

Grandpa (Lawrence) Walker didn't talk about his father much. He apparently drank heavily and was abusive to his wife, Edith. He left his family and offered little or no support. There is no evidence that they divorced.

Henry was returned to Streator, IL and interred at Riverside (now called Riverview) cemetery, in a section that is not near any family graves. The circumstances of his death were never reported in the newspaper. In the Streator Free Press on 5-25-1914 ----this was noted:------------------------------------------------------------------------Streator Daily Times Press May 25, 1914

William Austin7 Myer (Robert Courtney6, Isaiah5, William4, John Henry3, Christopher Christian Jr.2, Christian Sr.1) was born 23 Feb 1860 in Blackstone, Livingston Co., IL, and died 27 Aug 1942 in Coral Gables, Dade Co., Fla.. He married Agnes McCormick. She was born in Strawn, Livingston Co., IL.

Notes for William Austin Myer:Lived in Chicago at the time of his mother's death.William Austin Myer was quite well known as a world leading lightweight boxer in his prime. He was known as the "Streator Cyclone". He got into this by accident. He accompanied the Streator Militia to Springfield, Illinois for the annual encampment in July, 1881. He was an affable young man but he was sitting watching the military excercises when a Springfield bully came up to him and said, "I hear your name is Myer and that you're quite a slugger," then made an insulting remark about Streator and struck Billy between the eyes while he was still sitting. Billy then "struck an attitude" in an instant and

with one punch the bully was lying on the ground unconscious. Billy ordered a hack and had the man taken home . After hearing this, Streator businessmen hounded him to go professional. He eventually gave in and won many rich purses and a gold buckle. He was buddies with Diamond Jim and Lillian Russell and other notables of the times. When he fought his last championship in New Orleans in 1892, he was sick , and lost. He ended his career right then and there. He later became a horse track superintendent and was known for his expert groundskeeping. He invented a number of machines for track maintenance and remodeled the Saratoga, harlem tracks in Illinois, Hawthorne, Rockingham, Fort Erie in Canada, Hot Springs, Ideal in Milwaukee, Fairgrounds in New Orleans, and wound up in Coral Gables, Florida. He retired and lived there at the time of his death.

The CyberBoxingZone JournalSeptember 2000 issue-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Billy Myer, "The Streator Cyclone By Mark Dunn In the Golden Age of boxing there were few fighters who matched William Austin (“Billy”) Myer for power or character. Billy Myer was of Prussian descent. His earliest identified ancestor, Christopher Myer, came to America in about 1710 and his great grandfather Christopher Myer, Jr. fought with George Washington at Valley Forge. The Myer family was frequently on the move and in 1848 Billy’s grandfather and father moved from West Virginia to the hardscrabble area around Ottawa, Illinois. Over the years the family relocated several times. After Ottawa they moved to a postage stamp located in the northwest corner of Livingston County, Illinois know as Blackstone. Billy was born February 23, 1860 as the fourth child (but first boy) in a family of eleven children. Streator was a rapidly growing coal mining town in the 1880s. There was a string of coal towns near Streator including Spring Valley, Braceville, and Braidwood. A substantial seam of coal had been found outcropping along the bank of the Vermillion River - a glorified creek that dribbles through Streator on its way to the Illinois River. The discovery of coal ballooned the population of Streator to nearly eighteen thousand in the mid-1880s and many of them were immigrant miners from central Europe and Italy. The people of these towns were not very attentive to the Victorian ideals of older Illinois farm communities and it actively promoted boxing and wrestling even electing Billy’s father Police Magistrate in the late 1880s.

It isn’t very clear how Billy became interested in boxing. A family story traces his interest to an incident in Springfield, Illinois in July of 1881. It is said that Billy had followed a troupe from Streator to Springfield to watch their show. A local tough made the mistake of approaching Billy as he sat quietly on the curb watching the performance. The tough allegedly asked Billy if he thought he was a tough guy, uttered a slur about Streator, and then slugged Billy in the face. Supposedly, Billy stood up, knocked his assailant cold with one blow and then paid for a cab to take him home unconscious. Billy’s longtime backer, Alf Kennedy, told a newspaper reporter that he was the one who suggested that Billy should get involved in boxing. Kennedy was a big man and he claimed that he had been wrestling with Billy sometime in the early 1880s when he realized how strong he was and then suggested that Billy consider prizefighting. A third story is that Billy decided to participate in a local amateur tournament sponsored by Parson Davies and rolled through the competition. A final story was that Billy attended a prize fight where one of the participants failed to show. When the call was made for volunteers Billy came forward. Even though he weighed only about 112 pounds and was substantially outweighed by his opponent he held his own and was credited with the victory. What is known is that after moving to Streator in the late 1870s, Billy’s father built a barn behind the family’s home on LaSalle Street where Billy and his younger brothers Sam and Ed sparred with each other and with other local talent foolish enough to come in for a set-to. Myer vs. Welch Billy began his rise to prominence in 1895 when he knocked out Paddy Welch in Sreator in thirty two seconds of the first round. Welch was either from Braidwood or south Chicago (depending on which news account you accept) and had carried the title of Lightweight Champion of Illinois. Billy had been receiving some training from Arthur Magesty a journeyman lightweight fighter from Bloomington who had fought Tommy Warren several times. Billy’s quick victory was said to be a surprise and Welch claimed that he had been the victim of a “lucky punch” and demanded a rematch. As with other fighters to follow, the demand for a rematch with Billy was a mistake. Their second fight was for a $1,000 was held in Braidwood, Illinois. Half-ounce gloves were used. Three train car loads of Streator fight fans poured into Braidwood to watch the fight to the finish. They backed Billy with $5,000 of local money. Magesty and a local heavyweight fighter, George Mulvey, acted as Billy’s seconds. Alf Kennedy who owned a saloon in Streator was Billy’s financial backer. Owen Lee Cheney, a Bloomington fight promoter who would later play a prominent role in Billy’s career, acted as Master of Ceremonies. After chasing Welch around the ring for two rounds, Billy caught up with him in the third and again laid Welch out dislocating Welch’s shoulder in the process. So much for the “lucky punch” excuse.

This internet source; http://cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/wail900_dunn.htm - had the following information (and more) of interest: He stayed in New York until at least June of 1889 and was accepted as an all around good fellow”. At the time of the Johnstown flood, he was reported to have contributed to the Johnstown relief fund.

By October 1889, Billy was back in Illinois but was relocating from Streator to Bloomington. A short time later he signed on with Lee Cheney. This was probably not a good move for Billy. Cheney put together a variety show consisting of piano players, club swingers, a ventriloquist, and other acts that culminated with an interview with and fight demonstration by Billy. Their act was not well received and they were essentially booed off the stage when they appeared in Peoria in November 1889. Their act "didn’t play in Peoria". During this same period, Myer suffered some physical problems including a bout with malaria and an attack of neuralgia.

In early 1890, Cheney began to finally book some additional fights for Myer. One fight took place as a rematch with Jack Hooper. On April 30, 1890 in Alexandria, Virginia. Hooper was dispatched with a KO in the sixth round. It appeared that Billy was rounding into form. However, during the Hooper fight Billy injured or broke his right arm. In the meantime, Cheney had booked him for a fight only three weeks later with Andy Bowen a New Orleans lightweight and a comer. Myer traveled from Virginia to New Orleans and soon thereafter contracted some local malady that was probably akin those suffered by modern day travelers to Mexico. He was weak before the fight began and wrote to a friend that he should not be attempting to fight again because he was sick and out of condition. It is hard to know exactly what happened in this fight. I suspect that Cheney, knowing that Billy was injured and sick, may have bet against his own fighter.

Cheney, Billy Myer’s manager, threw up the sponge before the twenty-ninth round was called and the fight was awarded to Bowen. After the fight, Cheney claimed that he was worried that Billy could not finish the fight because of his injured arm. Cheney then gave Billy $65.00 and left for Bloomington claiming that he was dropping out of the fight game for good. A benefit was planned for Myer in New Orleans but the Mayor refused to let it go forward. Billy and his brother Ed (who had been beat up during the fight by New Orleans “fans”) then took a slow boat up the Mississippi River and then headed back to Streator by train. Billy refused to say much about Cheney when they reached home, but his brother said Cheney’s decision to throw in the sponge came without any consultation with Billy or his seconds. Myer’s career drifted around after his fight with Bowen. However, his name was still a drawing card and he was matched to fight Jack McAuliffe a second time with their fight to be on the evening of September 5, 1892. At this point, Billy was thirty-two years of age and Jack was seven years younger. Billy was past his prime and I really can’t bring myself to write too much about this fight which has been reported on by Tracy Callis in his excellent article about Jack. Jack supposedly won $25,000 in this second fight. The next day he acted as John L. Sullivan’s second in his fight with Jim Corbett

and promptly lost it all when he bet on John L. Suffice it to say that Billy was knocked out in the fifteenth round and, as a practical matter, his status as a leading lightweight contender was ended. Post Script It isn’t fair to Billy Myer to leave a report about him with a loss to Jack McAuliffe. William Austin Myer was a remarkable man. He was arespectful son. His was a close family member and throughout his life his best friends were his brothers Ed and Sam. Myer was well read and spent at least two hours every day reading several newspapers and novels. When he lived in Bloomington he would walk to Illinois State Normal University to meet with a professor there who taught Greek and Latin. He enjoyed the conversation and would sometimes spar with that teacher. He was an inventor. As reported above, he experimented with using electrical impulses in his training as early as 1888 and later in life was credited with inventing several pieces of race track maintenance equipment. After his fight career Billy knocked around for a few years. He managed a hotel in Peoria for a year or so and then went to Chicago where John Condon engaged Billy and his brother Sam to build the Harlem race track. With this venture, Myer found is niche in life. He and Sam they built a track at Hot Springs, Arkansas and another track at New Orleans. Sam dropped out of the business for personal reasons but Billy continued on by building a private race track for the Sinclair family in New Jersey and remodeling tracks at Saratoga, Hawthorne, Illinois, Rockingham Park, Fort Erie, Canada, Washington and Arlington Parks in Illinois, the Milwaukee fair grounds, and Tropical Park at Coral Gables, Florida. Along the way he and his son ran a training facility at Red Bank, New Jersey where Gene Tunney trained for his fight with Dempsey. There is a 1941 photograph of Billy (then known only as “Dad”). He was then eighty-one and astride an iron-gray pony, smoking a cigar and looking out with approval at his work in Florida . He died August 27, 1942 in Coral Gables. The world was a poorer place with his passing. __________________________ * I began reading about boxing in Illinois while doing research about my great grandfather, Richard T. Dunn who once fought and exhibition against Patsy Cardiff. Cheney promoted that match and along the way I started reading about Billy Myer and couldn’t stop. Along the way I encountered Tracy Callis who is, in my opinion, the expert of boxing in the 1880s and 90s. By chance I came across Samuel Myer’s great granddaughter, Marianne Parmele of Dublin, Texas who has provided priceless information about her family. Thanks to both of them.
