The opposite is Braidhead(Dumfriesshire ). The name is almost identical in meaning with the Gaelic place name Bon driech, "foot ofhill place". Marian Bradfute was the wife of Sir Willi am Wallace. Robert Braidfute was the vicar of Dunnyn,1491. William Bred fut was minister of Falkland, 1593. James Braidfoot was a merchant in Edi nburgh in1611. James Bredfoot was retoured heir in lands in parish of Du nss in 1678. The surname is common inLanark Commissariot Record. The re was an old Cumberland family of Braidfoot. There are records of aBrad fut in 1573, Bradfutt in 1566, Breadfoot in 1639; also Braidfutt, Breadfot te, Bredfute, and Breydfut."

(It was at the South Door of the churc h)I think that this James Broadfoot rather than Alexander Broadfoot is o ur ancestor. The reason I believe thisis that Alexander Broadfoot and Ja cobina Graham went to Renfrewshire and had children there. He mayhave co me back to Sanquhar but there are several Broadfoot families after that ti me in Renfrewshire??David Laidlaw (my ancestor) and his wife Isabella Bro adfoot named their first son James in 1793 at SouthMains. I am sure he w as named for Isabella's Father. It may not be too important but it mak es theAlexander Broadfoot Jacobina Graham parentage more questionabl e. I got into the Broadfoot side againbecause of the number of Laidlaws/ Laidleys who went to Ontario. Robert McCARTNEY and Sarah Broadfoot were marri edat Dalrymple and Dalmellington 1831. A Mary McCARTNEY also married the re and Robert had a sisterMary. Funny but another brother of my ancest or Robert McCartney ie George McCartney married an AgnesBROADFOOT! I al so notice John Broadfoot married Mary Holden at Dalmellington and Kirkmich ael.Kirkmichael lies beside Dalrymple parish. Remember my David Laidl aw and Isabella Laidlaw movedeventually from South Mains to Glenside of M artinaham, DALRYMPLE. Do you know if the Broadfootswere in Dalrymple ( at Glenside??) or in Dalmellington in 1830??? I am going to study the O ld Parishrecords to see if I can work it all out!"

Also from Robbie Wilson: "Extract from the book "Memorials of Sanquha r" by Tom Wilson 1912: 'I amindebpted to the Rev. J Richmond Wood of San quhar for the following copy of an old list ...'. The list has nodate b ut writing put it down to being compiled about 1750.

A note on the Burial place in Sanquhar Churchyard: "Further North of t he entry to the Queer door to theQueer Wall 3 Yards belonging to the ses sion said to be sold to James Broadfoot in South Mains". Thisindicates t hat James Broadfoot of South Mains purchased a burial plot around 175 0. I assume this waspurchased not in old age but to bury children who di ed young and could therefore indicate that James couldbe the father of Is abella Broadfoot (Mrs David Laidlaw) and James Broadfoot (husband of Sar ahMcCririck) whose children were born at South Mains between 1793 and 180 5. I believe this question of the

ownership of the burial site of the chu rch land may be a reason why none of the Broadfoots of South Mainsare pre sent on the old parish records from the period 1749 until 1793. Some res earchers have AlexanderBroadfoot and Jacobina Graham as the parents of Ja mes and Isabella. However Alexander is designated atthe birth of his chi ldren as "of Sanquhar" and later had a child born in Greenock. I belie ve this AlexanderBroadfoot could be the Schoolmaster of Sanquhar from 175 8-1762 also mentioned in Tom Wilson's"Memorials of Sanquhar". The date c orresponds to the date his last child was born in Sanquhar. Magdaline 23 may 1762. The next child Alexander is born 10 june 1765 at Greenock,Renfrewshire.I am sure that this Alexander Broadfoot is the teacher and n ot a farmer of South Mains.Another Alexander Broadfoot of South Mains was the Captain of the Curli ng Club of Sanquhar from1772..?"

He was the founder of The Broadfoot and Box Furniture Company, which was noted at that time throughoutCanada for its fine furniture.

In 1873-74, he was principal of a school where all the children spoke French. In 1880, he entered TorontoSchool of Medicine, and in 1884 he graduated and moved to Kansas. He became a citizen in 1885, living inEnterprise, KS, and bought some land there.

In 1887, after marrying Celia, they moved to WI, first to Reed's Landing and then to Independence. In 1893,they moved to Mondovi, WI.

Alexander was a successful physician. In 1894 he and Dr. Charles Hebard established a joint practice inMondovi under the name Hebard & Broadfoot, Physicians and Surgeons. Four years, in 1898, later Celiaand Alexander moved to Gilmanton, Buffalo County, Wisconsin. Unfortunately Alexander was a bit toooverly fond of alcohol which probably contributed to his failing health. In 1903, he went to Arizona to try toregain his health, and returned a few months later. From this time, his health gradually declined until hisearly demise on February 14, 1904 in Gilmanton. Dr. Broadfoot was a man of kindness of heart and aphysician of skill and ability. But, like most alcoholics, he was unable to treat himself.

His Obituary, Mondovi Herald, Jan 7 1898: "Alexander Broadfoot, physician and surgeon, was born inHuron County province of Ontario, Canada on the 9th of November, 1854. His early years were spent in theClinton grammar school one year, the collegiate institute of St. Catherine two years, the science departmentof the Toronto university two years and in 1880 he entered the Toronto school of Medicine from whichinstitution he graduated in 1884. The same year he began practicing medicine in Enterprise, Kansas, wherehe remained two years, going from there to Independence, Wisconsin in Jan, 1887. He remained inIndependence six years enjoying a good practice. Dr. Broadfoot moved to this city in Sept. 1893 and openedan office in the Peese Block over Luetscher Bros. & Helveg’s store. He soon worked up a good business andin April, 1984, became associated with Dr. Chas. Hebard under the firm name of Hebard & Broadfoot,physicians and surgeons. This partnership was dissolved about three weeks ago and Dr. Broadfoot moved toGilmanton this week at the earnest solicitation of a large number of people of that community whoseflattering propositions to the doctor bespeaks the legend in which his professional qualities are held. In hisearly years he took four years of hospital practice under Dr. James Stewart, now professor in McGillCollege, Montreal. In 1873 and ‘74 the Doctor was principal of a school where all of the students wereFrench. The doctor has been camp physician for the Modern Woodmen of this place and Gilmanton forseveral years."

There is a Tillotson history, LDS HS-393-396, 3 reels.

She was widowed early, with several small children whom she farmed out while she ran her grocery, variety,and ice cream store. She was an active, bright practical nurse as well.

She had many talents, but she had to farm out many of ther children since she was too busy with her varietystore to raise them properly. She even served as midwife for the at-home birth of Robert Francis Burns, anephew.

When she first moved to Enterprise, Kansas, she took a job as a courier for a bank, carrying large sums ofmoney. She had a young, innocent face at the age lf 26, and was not suspected of being a money courier!

Her obituary was published in Mondovi, Wisconsin:

"Celia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tillotson, was born at Medina, Ohio, on May 28, 1858. The familymoved to Elsie, Michigan. Mr. Tillotson was the first Postmaster there and the place was named after hisdaughter, Elsie, the first child born there. Later, the family moved to Crete, Illinois.

"Miss Celia Tillotson taught school in Illinois and Kansas. She obtained employment in a bank in Enterprise,

Kansas, where she met Dr. Alexander Broadfoot, whom she married in the year 1885. Dr. and Mrs.Broadfoot made their home in Enterprise, where the Doctor practiced his profession for several years. Theythen moved to Wisconsin (in 1887, when she was pregnant with Marion). For a while they were at ReedsLanding and then settled at Independence. In 1894 they came to this city, where the Doctor practiced forfour years. The next four years were spent at Gilmanton and then they finally located in this city.

"Eight children were born to Dr. and Mrs. Broadfoot. One son, James, died in infancy. The seven whosurvive their mother are: Marion, Mrs. Bert Shryock, of St. Paul, Minnesota; Grace, of Minneapolis,Minnesota; Roscoe, of Wausau; Grover L., of this city; Hibbard E., of New York City; Frances, Mrs. H.R.MacMartin, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Doris, Mrs. W.E. Brobst, of this city.

"On February 14, 1904, Dr. Broadfoot died. Left with the care of seven children, Mrs. Broadfoot withundaunted spirit devoted her life to their welfare. In so doing she made many sacrifices of which few wereaware. The upbringing and education of her children were her constant thought and her children evergratefully realize that what of good fortune has been theirs they owe to thecare and capacity of their mother.

"But Mrs. Broadfoot did not confine her activities to her home and her children, although they had the firstplace in her heart. So long as her health and strength permitted, she was an active member of theCongregational church, the Eastern Star, the Woman's Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Beaversand the Royal Neighbors of America and was welcome wherever she went.

Since last August, Mrs. Broadfoot has been in failing health and since last October has been confined to herbed at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.E. Brobst, where she made her home. The end came peacefullyearly Thursday morning, February 9. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, February 1, at thehome of her son, Grover, Rev. William Lodwick officiating. There was a large attendance. All the childrenwere present. Mrs. Hartwell Halverson and Mrs.W.R. Hardy sang "In The Garden". There was a beautiful profusion of floral tributes. From Mondovi, thefuneral cortege went to Gilmanton, where burial was made in the family lot.

"Besides the children already mentioned, Mrs. Broadfoot is survived by twelve grandchildren."

She was raised first by the Farrington family of Mondovi when she was small. Her mother had beenwidowed early, and worked full time, so the kids were farmed out. She went to high school in Duluth,Minnesota, where her sisters Frances and Grace had moved around the beginning of World War I. Francesmarried there in 1920 to Harry MacMartin and they moved to Schuyler, Nebraska.

Doris spent some time with the Burns family in Chicago, Illinois, probably on summer vacation in highschool, or perhaps in teacher's school, and also with her sister Frances and her husband in Schuyler,Nebraska, near Omaha.

He was born on the Elmer Helwig farm, 1 1/2 miles south of Gilmantown, Gilmantown Township, BuffaloCounty, Wisconsin.

Baptismal sponsors were Tom and Manie Milan.

His farm was on the north side of Mondovi, adjoining the golf course. This was actually his father's farm,located in Brobst Valley. When he was born, this area was called Naples; it later became known asMondovi. When his mother died in 1927, his father sold the farm, moved to Mondovi, and he and WilliamEverett went into business with a flour, feed, and seed store in Mondovi. His father was actively engaged inthat business until a few days before his death. After his father died, William Everett gave up the farm andbegan working for the Cities Service Oil Company in Mondovi as a distributor.

In 1939, he and his family moved to Osseo, Wisconsin, about 23 miles east of Mondovi, where he continuedhis work with Cities Service. In 1942, he moved to Milwaukee to work for the war effort with CutlerHammer. Six months later, he went to work for the Federal Government at an air base in northeasternCanada. In the summer of 1944, he and his family moved to Richland Center, Wisconsin, where he took ajob with the Pure Oil Company as a regional distributor. In the mid -1950s he moved to Madison, and in1959 he retired to Florida.

He was known as Everett in Mondovi, but after leaving Osseo in 1942, he took the name of Bill.

HAROLD STANLEY DARRAGH 1916 - 2003 Suddenly on September 29, 2003 at Seven Oaks Hospital, withhis family at his side Harold Stanley Darragh passed away. Harold was born and raised in Portage LaPrairie. He was employed by the City of Winnipeg and retired as the Citys Chief Plumbing and MechanicalInspector. During his retirement he enjoyed summers at Ponemah Beach and winters in Kona, Hawaii. Hewas an avid Winnipeg Blue Bomber fan. He was a season ticket holder for 55 years. He enjoyed hunting,curling and building construction. He was predeceased by brothers, Albert, Clarence, Lloyd and Earl; sisterDoreen Webster; and sister -in-law Cary. He is survived by sisters-in-law, Bernie, Lavinia and brother-in-law Andy Webster. He will be missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Lorna; son Gary (Elaine) daughterLynne and son Alden (Sally). "PA" will be sadly missed by his beloved grandchildren, Kristy, Matt, Lori,Riley and Janelle. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will beheld. [The first maleRipley who is my direct ancestor came to Mass. in 1638 and I have traced him, his son, his father, and hisgrandfather back to small villages 10 miles or so southwest of Norwich, England. The grandson of theimmigrant and subsequent generations were born in colonial American/the U.S. The grandfather was bornin the early 16th century in England.
