The University of Derby Online Learning is the thriving distance learning division of the University of Derby.

Wajeeh Abbas, who lives in Saudi Arabia, studied for a BA (Hons) Business Studies online degree with the University of Derby. Wajeeh had a full time job as a Procurement and Purchasing Officer, his decision to study online, rather than on campus, was down to the flexibility online study offered. He said: “Studying online appealed to me because it gives busy working professionals, such as myself, the flexibility to fit study around a job. I did not want to give up working to attend university full time so online study meant I was able to gain a degree qualification without having to.”

“ The University of Derby offered the modules I was interested in, a competitive fees package, easy access to course materials and plenty of tutor support. It was also the only UK university that was directly affiliated with the Saudi Community Institute in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This meant the Institute was able to provide me with initial help and support in terms of my registration and course management with

Derby – making the process of getting started even easier.

“ This particular degree equipped me with a sound understanding of the core concepts of business and its applications and should really benefit me professionally. It has definitely improved my time management skills and this, combined with having an academic qualification, will help me to stand out in the competitive job market.

“ Being a virtual learner was a fairly unique experience – it is fantastic that I was able to obtain a professional degree by using modern technology and assistance from tutors and educational resources that were all provided online. I would certainly recommend online study with the University of Derby to busy working professionals who are not able to study on campus or full time due to other commitments.”

Supporting your wellbeing

Going to university is not just about your studies. There are lots of other things to think about, especially for international students. Moving to another country, a new currency, a different language, a different style of learning and a new culture are all things that may affect you. For a lot of students this is their first time living away from home, so you may find that you are not only adjusting to being a new student but to living independently too.

You might find that when you get here you need help with a specific problem, such as accommodation, finance, studying, working whilst you study or personal problems. It is important to remember that you are not on your own. We have a support network in place to help you with all aspects of your student life. Also, the International Student Centre has a welfare advisor who you can contact for confidential advice. Contact them by sending an email to: [email protected], calling: 00 44 1332 591616

Visa supportIf you are a national of a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland, you do not need a visa to study. If you are from any other country then you will need to apply for permission to study in the UK.

You can only study on a Tier 4 visa with an institution that has a Tier 4 Sponsor Licence and is a Highly Trusted Sponsor, such as the University of Derby.

A Student Visitor visa is needed if you are studying a course that is less than six months long or you are studying an English language course that is less than 11 months long.

We have a dedicated Visa and Immigration Adviser who is available for students to contact before, during or after their course. Please send an email to: [email protected] to find out more.

Registering with the policeMany visas require you to register with the police. This is something that we can help you to do so that you can concentrate on your studies.

Fees and funding

EU studentsOur approach to tuition fees is simple. The fee reflects the actual cost and we include all the essential equipment and activities for your degree. That means they are covered by your student loan and you do not have to find additional cash during the year for anything other than your living expenses.

On campus fees for EU studentsWe have two fee categories which reflect the actual costs of delivering our different types of courses:n Classroom-based courses:

£8,500 per year These courses are delivered in a lecture theatre or seminar room and do not involve any specialist facilities or equipment.

n Resource intensive courses: £9,000 per year These courses use more resources so we reflect this in the tuition fee, which means they are covered by your student loan.

If you have any questions about the cost of your course or any of the other costs associated with

studying in the UK, please contact our International Student Advisers by calling: 00 44 1332 591 698 or sending an email to: [email protected].

We have a wide range of courses designed to meet your needs and career aspirations.

Study options

Courses that fit around your life

Not ready for an honours degree? If you are an international student and do not have the qualifications or English language skills to start a degree, our International Foundation Programme will give you a recognised qualification so that you can move onto an undergraduate degree in subjects such as art and design, business, engineering, events management and tourism, law and technology.

The programme will help you to develop the English and academic skills that you will need during your degree. You will study alongside other international students in a friendly and supportive environment and our tutors will help you to develop your skills.

You will study full-time which is 15 or more hours of class per week plus self-study for two semesters. If you start the course in September you will finish in June and have the usual academic Christmas and Easter holiday breaks. If you start the course in January, you will finish at the end of July. This is because the course that starts in January is a fast-track option and you will only have two weeks' holiday at Easter.

If you want to start the programme in September, you will need to have completed your secondary school education and have a minimum IELTS of 4.5 or equivalent overall. In order to meet new visa requirements, you must have a minimum of IELTS 4.0 (or equivalent) in listening, reading, speaking and writing.

To start the programme in January, you will need to have completed your secondary school education and have a minimum of IELTS of 5.0 or equivalent overall, with a minimum of 4.5 (or equivalent) in listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Pre-sessional English coursesIf you want to improve your English language skills before you start an undergraduate degree course, our pre-sessional English courses can help you to:n achieve the entry level for your

degree coursen improve your confidence, listening,

presentation, reading, research and writing skills

n make friends before starting your degree course

The full-time course lasts either five, ten or fifteen weeks depending on the level of English required by your degree.

At the end of the course, we will assess your listening, reading, speaking and writing. If you successfully complete these assessments, you can move on to your chosen degree course and you will not need to take another IELTS test.

English Language coursesYou will learn a full range of English language skills, including grammar, listening, pronunciation, reading, speaking, vocabulary and writing. These will be taught in small groups so that you can receive lots of help and support from our teachers.

Foundation coursesA foundation degree (FdA, FdSc or FdEng) combines academic skills with practical experience. It is a qualification in its own right, but you can use it to top-up to a BA (Hons), BSc (Hons) or BEng (Hons) degree with one more year of full-time study.

Top-upsIf you have a qualification that is equivalent to a HND (Higher National Diploma) or Foundation Degree you might be able to top up your qualification and progress onto the final year of study and achieve a full Honours degree.

Placements This is a very popular option with international and EU students because it means that you can gain UK work experience as part of your course. We are developing more courses to include placements and internships.

Ready for a bachelors degree?Sometimes called first degrees, these lead to qualifications such as:n BA (Hons) for arts related coursesn BEd (Hons) leads to Qualified Teacher

Statusn BEng (Hons) for engineering coursesn BSc (Hons) for science-based coursesn LLB (Hons) which is a law degree

How you will studyTeaching includes dissertation supervision sessions, group tutorials, lectures, online taught sessions, personal tutorials, practical sessions, seminars and workshops. Your personal tutor will give you their help and support.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge of each subject, while enhancing your research and problem solving skills by working on projects with other students.

If you already have appropriate qualifications, you can apply for direct entry to the second or third stage of many of our bachelors degrees.

Taking your degree and masters at the same time Our MDes courses in Animation, Illustration and Graphic Design are combined undergraduate and postgraduate degrees so you will graduate with a masters degree. This means that you do not have to relocate for a separate postgraduate degree.

We can offer you flexible study options:

n Full-time Fully immerse yourself in university life

n Part-time Fit your course around your work or family commitments

n Online learning Study anywhere at anytime

This approach will help you with skills such as organisation and adaptability which will put you ahead in the graduate job market. You can study two subjects equally, or some combinations allow you to specialise in one subject and compliment it with another; for example you could major in Marketing and minor in Business Management.

Our Joint Honours students have their own dedicated administration centre so you will have access to support, guidance, and advice before and during your studies.

Why choose a Joint Honours degree?n Many of our degrees are professionally

accredited, which is a hallmark of quality. This means your qualification will be highly regarded by potential employers, putting you one step ahead of the field as you embark on your chosen career

n You can gain invaluable skills in our fantastic real world learning facilities. Our superb training facilities include a full size crown court, a family courtroom and our own working theatre; Derby Theatre. In addition, our sophisticated sport and

exercise equipment is regularly used by elite sports teams for testing performance, movement, health and fitness

n Even in defined careers you will find that you will need to develop skills and knowledge across a variety of disciplines. So for example, if you are aiming to work in accountancy, a robust business knowledge base could support your career ambitions. Employers value the development of broader skills and knowledge to supplement a sound theoretical knowledge base; our joint honours scheme meets this need perfectly

n As a Joint Honours student you will develop the skill of recognising the links between different disciplines. Some of the most important research in the world takes place at the junction between different subjects, so if a career in research interests you, you will be well equipped to carry this out

How do I apply? Your UCAS code will depend on the combination of subjects you choose. Please check your UCAS code at: www.ucas.com

A Joint Honours degree gives you the opportunity to study two subject areas from a wide range of disciplines.
