Greetings toeveryone in theregion. Thissummer has beenflying by so far. We’ve had somenice get togethersincluding Dr. &Mrs. Zachariashosting a

wonderful party last month at theirhome. A few weeks back Rick & BarbLederman hosted a “fun Concours”with a twist at their home. Rick tookseveral pairs of white gloves and tooka wipe from a secret area on each car.The dirtiest glove was the actualwinner. Kudos to Rick & Barb forhosting a fun filled event at theirplace.

On the calendar for next month is acombination group driving tour alongwith getting together at Sullivan’sRestaurant out in Wauseonafterwards. The driving tour willoriginate at Secor Metropark andculminate at the restaurant. Checkthe MVR website for details.

Speaking of the website, please checkout the new improved 2.0 website thatBob Harris has been working on forsome time now. He has had thedaunting task of taking the years ofinformation from the club andmerging it into the new website. With

the new platform, we will be able tomore easily add content as time goeson. I would be remiss withoutthanking Janet Sternfeld formanaging the club’s website for thepast several years. She has done awonderful job of keeping people“connected” to the club events alongwith providing information along theway.

In closing, Tony Calabrese, CraigZenil & myself have been workinghard to put the finishing touches onthis years HPDE at Grattan Racewayat the end of July. I can honestly saythat we were quite worried about thesuccess of the event due to an earlylack of signups. There were a lot ofphone calls, texting & emailing goingbetween the three of us. I am happyto say that as of last night we have 43participants signed up for theGrattan HPDE. We could not havemade this a success without everyonegiving their time, the sponsors andthe participants who are lookingforward to a safe DE event.

Remember to keep the blink alive!!

July 2016

Our trip to the Porsche ExperienceCenter was truly a weekend toremember. I’m still on cloud nine, butwill try to come down long enough torelay what a wonderful weekend wehad.

In case you missed it, Evie and I were atthe MVR-PCA Holiday Party lastNovember, and Porsche of Ann Arborhad donated a package for two to driveat the Porsche Experience Center inAtlanta. Conservative Dave sprung forjust one $10.00 ticket, and the starsaligned just right; my name was drawnfrom the hat!

Every detail of the weekend wasabsolutely first class! We arrivedFriday evening at the Four Seasons indowntown Atlanta (the only Five Starhotel in Atlanta). We were treated likeroyalty; my name was even showing onthe TV screen as we entered the room.On the counter there was a warm softpretzel, and a toy 911-S as a souvenir. We walked around Atlanta near the

hotel to check things out, and got readyfor the exciting Saturday ahead of us.We enjoyed a feast of a breakfast(thanks to Porsche of Ann Arbor) andchecked out of the hotel by 10:00. Wewere part of a group of 10, with all theothers being from Michigan. There wasa shiny Mercedes Sprinter limo vanwaiting to take everyone south to theExperience Center, which is adjacent tothe Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, andabout 15 minutes from downtown. Wehad driven down to Atlanta so we couldvisit some family on the return trip, butall the others had flown down fromMichigan on Friday.

Finally, we arrived at the ExperienceCenter. It was time for the fun to begin! We were greeted by friendly hosts, andimmediately signed waivers before wewere allowed to go on the track. Whilewaiting for our tour guide, we allstrolled through the Porsche RetailStore, seeing lots of specialty items not

usually sold through local dealers. Ibought a key fob to match my car, butpassed on the $65.00 Tee shirts. Ourtour guide arrived, and we began with atour of the Porsche Heritage Center andClassic Gallery. There were approx. twodozen cars of significance to thePorsche history displayed, from earlySpeedsters and Carreras (air cooled andwater cooled) to Boxsters and Caymansfrom each generation design. Upstairsthey also had many brand new Porscheson display, some waiting for pickup bycustomers.

Next it was time for a gourmet lunch atRestaurant 356. We had a great view ofthe track, as well as planes landing onthe nearby runway of Atlanta Airport. With all the anticipation of what was tocome, eating was the last thing on mymind. However, Evie observed everydish as it came to our table, and wasvery impressed. She even had a talkwith the Head Chef after our meal, andgot some recipes sent to her. Call Eviefor the recipe on a delicious zucchinipotage (soup).

Now for the FUN! After a shortclassroom session to explain what wasgoing to happen, we all made our wayto the track around 2:00 PM. For thenext three and a half hours, we werepumped up on pure Porsche adrenaline!First, I need to explain how it works. Ausual track session is just one and a halfhours long, and includes driving one caron a variety of things like the 1.6 mileroad course, a shorter low frictionhandling course, a dynamics area forfull launch control starts and panicstops, and a low friction circle andhydraulic kick-plate which throws the

car into a skid, which you must corrector do 360 donuts in the water! Normalcosts for this run from $300 in aBoxster or Cayman up to $750 for a 911Turbo. They have other more expensivepackages driving GT3 RS models, andone that drives both a 911 Turbo and a911 GT3 so you can compare thedifferences.

I’m explaining all this because as guestsof Porsche of Ann Arbor, we had amuch better program. Sitting before uswere 10-12 brand new 2016 and 2017Porsches. New Boxster 718’s, aCayman GTS, a Boxster 718 S, a 911Carrera S, a 911 Carrera 4S Targa, aPanamera, and some Cayenne SUV’s.For 3-1/2 hours, we had our choice ofwhich car to drive, and where to try itout. Every car had a very polite andknowledgeable instructor showing uswhich line to follow, when to brake, andwhen to go hard and fast. Theinstructors must have nerves of steel toget into cars every day on a track withtotal strangers, but they seemed nonethe worse for the wear. Evie and I bothdrove four different models on a varietyof the courses, as well as a Cayenne onthe off-road course. All of theexperiences were amazing! It wouldtake too long to comment on each car,but suffice it to say the Cayenneelectronics help it do things unheard ofin an SUV. I knew that all Porscheswere fast and handled great, but I wastotally blown away at the braking powerof all the Porsche models. You can’tstop quicker unless you hit a brick wall! Also, these Porsche cars are justbulletproof! Drivers run the asses offthem day after day, week after week, and after about six months, they put on

new brakes and sell them. Plus, they runall day. When not on the track, they sitthere idling with the A/C on in 95degree heat hour after hour. Justamazing cars! After our excitingafternoon at the Porsche ExperienceCenter in Atlanta, Evie is hoping thatSanta puts a Boxster under herChristmas tree in the near future.

This story would not be completewithout a giant tip of the hat and sincereTHANK YOU to the folks at Porsche ofAnn Arbor for donating this prizepackage to Maumee Valley Region. Ourhosts from the dealership were J.P.Lammers, General Manager, and TrishaSmith, General Sales Manager. Thankyou both for making this truly a Porscheweekend to remember!

Reliability Questions about 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Drivetrains

Question: How reliable are the different drivetrains both manual and automatic forthe years 2007-2009?

Answer: Submitted by Dustin Aydt .The general rule of thumb is to always buy thenewest car you can within your budget. These cars are always improving andcoming with more standard features as the production progresses. The one caveat tothis is when a new model is released with major changes involved (997.2 had abrand new engine design and a new transmission option) sometimes there are somereal-world bugs that did not get worked out during testing. MY 2006-2008 997s(997.1) still used the M97 motor which used the "dreaded" intermediate shaft(IMS) Keep in mind that this latest version of the IMS bearing in these engines hasa less than 1% failure rate, but it can still happen and is a costly repair if it does.Other than the IMS bearing these cars are very reliable as long as they have beenmaintained. Deferred maintenance can compound quickly and make a "good deal"turn into a very expensive first trip to your service center. MY09 (997.2) introducedthe new MA1 engine which no longer used an intermediate shaft inside the engine. These engines have proved to be almost problem-free with the exception of a fewitems. Early motors had high-pressure fuel pump failures and random coolant leaks. Most of these concerns have been remedied by now. In 2009, the tiptronictransmission was replaced by the PDK transmission. The PDK has also been veryreliable though the early cars don't drive/shift as nice as the later cars. Both modelshave their own set of known concerns but neither one is a strong favorite to me. The997.1 has a much lower resale value due to the IMS bearing scare, but that means alower up-front cost of ownership. The downside is there is always a risk of the IMSbearing failing and due to the oversize bearing used on the late M97 motors itcannot be replaced preventatively. The 997.2 cars are more money to purchase butyou don't need to "worry" about the engine.

Adding a Bluetooth Device

Question: I have a 2005 911 Carrera with 46,000 miles. It is equipped with thestandard Radio Unit with Bose Speakers and CD (1) player and no Nav, orBluetooth. Are there any plug and play bluetooth devices available for this RadioUnit?

Answer: Submitted by Dustin Aydt. Porsche did not offer Bluetooth connectivityuntil MY2009. There are a multitude of aftermarket units that integrate quiteseamlessly with the Porsche PCM. The most common products I see in our area arefrom: Dension, mObridge and NAV-TV. Many high-end stereo shops have theirown preference but all three manufacturers offer a good product. I'm sure there aremany more products on the market. These are just the ones we see in our area. Myrecommendation is to speak with your local dealership or car audio installer to seewhat they recommend. Using a product they are familiar with will aid in anypotential troubleshooting down the road.

Inoperable Windshield Wipers And Heater Fan

Question: The electric windows, windshield wipers and heater fan on my 1986Porsche 944 do not work. The car, with 133,000 miles, has been sitting for a while. This past winter I started it up but the afore mentioned did not work. It seemed thatwhen ever it would rain heavy those components did not work. I thought maybe itwas a water issue and if I let it sit maybe it would dry up. Subsequently, I drove itone evening for an hour or so with the fan switch on and all components worked. Iassumed everything was ok. Then few weeks later I took the car out and all threehave not worked since. I think maybe something is corroded but I cannot findanything.

Answer: Submitted by George Beuselin. The most likely cause is a defective Xrelay which is plugged into position #14 on the fuse block. To test to see if thatmight be the case, make a jumper from a piece of wire and two large electricalcrimp connectors. Remove the relay and plug the wires into the positions marked#30 and #87. If that works, then the relay is defective and should be replaced. If itdoesn't work, obtain a copy of the factory wiring diagram and use your skills ofobservation, theorization, and deduction to solve your problem. If that doesn't work, take it to a shop that specializes in electrical problems.

Greetings PCA Zone4 Members,

I have enjoyed theopportunity to attendmany Parades sincejoining PCA. Theyare always eventfilled weeks withmore activities toattend than time, and

this year was no different. The 61stAnnual Parade was held in Jay Peak,VT from June 19-25. Parade officiallybegins with the Welcome Party onSunday. However, I arrived on Fridayto attend a number of meetingsscheduled through Sunday evening, andhad additional meetings throughout theweek. On several mornings, I woke upbefore 5 a.m. and was in meetings until6 p.m.

Between all of the meetings, I was ableto find time to enjoy some of thescheduled activities. I even entered oneof the many competitive events andbrought home a first place trophy. OnMonday, I once again served as aConcours Judge; this year judging themodified class.

Tuesday, we visited a local winery andtoured the Ben and Jerry’s Factory innearby Waterbury, VT. At the ConcoursBanquet Tuesday evening, I had thehonor of presenting the Zone RepAward to our own Francie Kish, ParadeFacilities Chair and charter member ofthe Rally Sport Region. Typically theZone Reps submit their candidates and

much discussion takes place over thecourse of several months. At thediscretion of the Zone Reps, this awardmay or may not be given out on anannual basis. It is one of the mostprestigious awards in PCA and is givento the individual who in the opinion ofthe Zone Reps has made outstandingcontributions to the club.

On Thursday, we participated in theGimmick Rally, travelling throughoutthe area in search of the many coveredbridges, and stopping to eat lunch at theTrapp Family Lodge. Thursdayevening, we hosted the Zone 4 Party, which was well attended and enjoyedby everyone. A great deal of thanksgoes to Chris Braden of Munk’s Motorsfor sponsoring the Zone 4 Party as wellas once again sponsoring the extremelypopular Zone 4 Parade shirts. Wecertainly appreciate his generosity andcontinued support of Zone 4 Events.

Friday, I attended the Tech Academyand enjoyed a sunset dinner cruise onLake Memphremagog, taking us acrossthe US/Canadian border. Saturday wasanother very busy day. It began with theVolunteer Lunch, during which I wasasked by National President CarenCooper if I would do the honor ofleading the Parade of several hundredPorsches from the resort to Newport. The evening and the week ended withthe Victory Banquet. After all of theawards were announced and distributed,a short video was shown introducing usto Spokane, Washington, the site of
