der RÜCKSPIEGEL February 2019

The year started off with veryunusual weather patterns for Zone4. Could this be the sign of anunusual year? I would like you tomake this an unusual year in PCA bygetting out to an event you haven’ttried yet. Only doing track events?Try an autocross, or a driving tour.Haven’t been to a track DriverEducation event? Try coming out tothe Southeast Michigan DE 101 onApril 20th at Waterford HillsRaceway. Or to one of the DriverEducation events the followingweekend April 28-29th at either MidOhio Sportscar Course with MidOhio Region, or Putnam Park withCentral Indiana region. See what it’sall about, stay for lunch and youmay get a chance to drive thetouring laps on the track over thelunch break. Most regions have amonthly breakfast – Maumee ValleyRegion, or Thirsty Thursday –Eastern Buckeye Region, or aSaturday Breakfast with CentralIndiana Region. Events are postedon each region’s website, orFacebook page.

Despite that fun winter stuff calledsnow, I visited 2 events in Indianain January. First, the New MemberParty for Michiana on January 26th,in Elkhart, IN. Many nice doorprizes were awarded after a verynice dinner at the country club. Thefollowing Saturday, actuallysneaking into February, I joinedmembers of Central Indiana Regionand Michiana in Ft Wayne for a2019 planning meeting. Many great

der RÜCKSPIEGEL

Dear der RÜCKSPIEGEL Readers,

“No plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first contact with the main hostile force—Helmuth Karl Bernhard Graf von Moltke

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth” — Mike Tyson

We do our best to avoid being punched in the mouth for any reason, but as editors that sometimes comes with the territory. That was something Tom and Deb Isley left out of the brief when we assumed the position.

“I have never had a plan of operations” —Napoleon Bonaparte

We didn’t discover that we had been utilizing Napoleon’s strategy until we read the quote. It seemed to have worked well for him, until it failed in spectacular fashion. It seems to be working with an acceptable failure rate for us, but we could be one mistake away from epic disaster. Who can say for sure?

Plans are on our minds right now because it became obvious that we didn’t have an emergency disaster plan in place for the newsletter. It may not have mattered with a global pandemic. We’re certain we’ve never seen anything like this, and as much as we have been pushing members to attend more events, we may not have any events to attend for a while. We are not abandoning our calls to action. We will resume encouraging increased event attendance as soon as we have events to attend again.

The Geneva International Motorshow, Formula 1 Australian GP, FIA WEC & IMSA Sebring races have all been cancelled or postponed as a result of this virus. This is by no means a comprehensive list of events that have been postponed or cancelled. We don’t have time to list all of them, and we don’t have space in the newsletter. If there hasn’t been a valid argument for the utility of virtual reality yet, this may be one of them. Geneva is where the 992 Turbo S was supposed to make its debut. That didn’t happen, but the car is still coming, and we are beyond delighted to share with you that it still has two turbos unlike its electric sibling that shares part of the name. We’ve been told we have to stop picking on the new electric car, but our cover photo and the recent debut of the vehicle at Porsche of Ann Arbor forces that baffling marketing decision back into focus. One reader sent a note regarding that late last year. We didn’t mention it before now because it felt like piling on at the time. Now we are scrounging the couch cushions looking for content, and it seemed somewhat relevant.

APRIL 2020

The only thing we can say with certainty is that we will be creating an emergency editorial procedures file and will happily pass it along to whomever takes over editing responsibilities from us whenever that may happen. Since we haven’t started creating the procedures, it could be a couple of years before it is ready. In the interim, we hope that everyone stays safe and healthy, and we look forward to seeing all of you soon, but not too soon.

Thank you for reading,

As I write this article a few weeks into March, my husband Michael, who is a member of PCA’s National Staff, just completed a meeting with the Executive Council regarding PCA activities and the Coronavirus. PCA is concerned with the health and well-being of its members. They are monitoring the situation and putting protocols in place to protect the members at this time. Guidance will be given on all events from the large National ones to the small region events.

During the first quarter each year, every PCA region President is required to attend their Zone Presidents’ Meeting. The Zone 4 Presidents’ Meeting was held in Rossford a few weeks after I returned from the National Staff Meeting in Dallas. National Treasurer Craig Kugler was the Executive Council member who attended the meeting to give a National Update and answer any questions as well as address concerns we have at the regional level.

In addition, PCA Procedures chairman Ron Carr discussed changes in the Region Procedures Manual including increases in the subsidies regions receive from National. National Awards Chair Michael Soriano gave a presentation on the improvements made to the National Awards program and how to apply for the various awards. He also spoke about the National Newsletter Contest. We also heard from Jim Hemig, PCA’s Membership Marketing director. Time was also spent promoting some of our region events. It is amazing the diversity of activities that are held within a few hours from us, and as a PCA member, you are welcome to attend each and every one of those events.

The following day was the DE meeting, where many region DE Chairs and Chief Driving Instructors along with some Presidents gathered for a few hours to discuss concerns and best practices and to brainstorm viable solutions for some common issues. It was a productive weekend.

Michael and I recently attended Porsche of Ann Arbor’s Taycan Launch Party. The all electric Taycan Turbo was unveiled accompanied by a presentation from both Jay Douglas and Eric Gedeon who explained that the 5100 lb. vehicle goes 0 – 60 in 2.8 sec. as well as the charging requirements and features. Dick and Shirley Gobba were also at the event, which, as usual, was a fantastic evening.

During the evening we were informed that Porsche of Ann Arbor has again

der RÜCKSPIEGEL February 2019

The year’sevents beganwith our firstbreakfast gettogether at StarDiner onJanuary 8. Next, the Board

hosted an Appreciation Dinner forBarney and Beth Stewart to thankthem for their service as Presidentand First Lady. A few days later, wasour first evening social event of theyear, an evening at Gastro Socialpub. Over 40 MVR members, somelongtime and some attending theirfirst event, gathered for an eveningof good food and conversation. OnSaturday, February 2, a number ofmembers attended the Lady Rocketsbasketball game. Immediatelyfollowing the game was dinner atThe Beirut, where additionalmembers joined the group. I had anespecially good time that evening, since I was the winner of the 50/50raffle, with proceeds going to theMobile Meals of Toledo WeekenderProgram for kids.

As I sit down to write this article, Ihave just returned from the PCANational Winter Board Meeting, which was held in Seattle,Washington. As always, it was avery informative and productiveweekend. In addition to the usualmeetings with regard to ourNational responsibilities, a fewweeks before the meeting, myhusband Michael, the PCA National

WillkommenBy Lisa Soriano

Awards Chair, was contacted byNational President Tom Gorsuchasking him to moderate theRoundtable Discussions for the PCANational Staff Meeting. I assisted inrunning the discussions, whichrevolved around the ExecutiveCouncil’s new S.W.O.T Initiative.During the meetings, CommitteeChairs, Committee members, andRegion Presidents discussed theStrengths, Weaknesses,Opportunities, and Threats on theNational, Zone, and Regional levels. The information gathered at thismeeting will be used in conjunctionwith the information gathered by athird party firm to shape and guidePCA in the upcoming years.

During the Board Meeting, it wasannounced that membershipcontinues to grow and currentlythere are 129,996 Total Members.PCA is working hard to provide evenmore opportunities to themembership including developingthe first officially sanctioned PCANational iRacing simulation racingseries. and, Craig Kugler, NationalTreasurer, announced that morethan likely there will be anotherSurplus Region Refund Subsidyagain this year.

Over the course of the weekend, Iwas also able to work with theNational Membership, DE, andDriving Tour Chairs to get answersthat will directly benefit the Region.

The next couple of events are acontinuation of the monthlymorning breakfast at Star Dinerwhich is on March 12, and thedinner at Black Pearl restaurant.Be sure to let Kim Harris know ifyou plan on attending.

One final note is a reminder thatthe club is “fueled by volunteers.”We are always looking for help inplanning or staging our events,or running the region. If you cansupport in any way, let Lisa orone of the other officers know.Your help will be greatlyappreciated.

We are continuingwith the guestcolumn by RobertTurner. His insighton playing aroundwith carmanufactures carconfigurators israther interesting.

I would like to encourage thoseof you that like to write tocontribute an article forinclusion in the newsletter. Localcontent and event reviews arealways more interesting to read.

The dinner at The Beirut wasvery well attended. There wasover 30 members enjoying thefood and company.

TECHNICAL Q&A

Maintenance – 2007 Cayman S Question: I’m the proud second owner of a 987.1 S. First time Porsche owner.

Car has only 28k miles. Paint job and interior like new. Garage kept and, in the rain, once in its CA life. No track days. Mostly highway miles. Borla exhaust. Original owner did many oil changes based more on time than miles. He did a brake (15k) and coolant flush (18k) too. Engine air filter at 15k and cabin filter at 8k/28k.

Opinions about following the maintenance year intervals over the mileage intervals? Spark plugs and Drive Belt not done yet! Thirteen years is quite a while regardless of miles, right? Coil packs too probably? Tires about seven years old. “Replace tire sealant”...Sounds lame but also sounds like a good idea for safety...Do it?

Really doubt there are significant bore scores or any IMS issues but should I scope bores or do anything to check these two known issues? (no exhaust colors or such)

Thank you for helping this novice!

Answer - Submitted by Pedro Bonilla: I always recommend two things:

Drive the car! Enjoy it. Cars that are driven 7,000 miles or more per year have less issues than those that sit in a garage. Follow the factory’s recommended service schedule religiously except for oil changes which I recommend every 5,000 miles or once per year. One of the factory’s recommendations is that tires that are 6 years old or older should be replaced. Finally, don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. Most of it has been blown out of proportion.

LED Taillight Conversion – 2001 Boxster Question: I have a 2001 Boxster with factory tail light housing with incandescent bulbs. I was wanting to know if I can convert over to LED bulbs, simply by replacing the incandescent bulbs with the equivalent LED bulbs. I have been researching this

issue and getting rather contrasting arguments against regarding “reverse polarity issues”, can’t do it with problems, etc. Any ideas? I really don’t want to replace factory housing to an aftermarket LED housing. Answer - Submitted by Pedro Bonilla : It can be done but you must follow certain “rules” in order for it to work properly. Each one of the bulbs inside the taillights MUST be matched to its LED equivalent. It also must be an “error-free” type LED. Polarity doesn’t matter because all of the taillight bulbs are bayonet-type where the correct polarity is already built into the bayonet mount.

Which Gasoline – 1973 911TQuestion: Ed, I am in the process of getting my 73.5 T back on the road after too many years. The tank/fuel lines are clear, and the fuel distributor was rebuilt. It is running beautifully, but I am paranoid about what to put in the fuel tank. Is it best to go with ethanol-free gas at 87 octane (with maybe an octane booster?) or premium ethanol gasoline and with a stabilizer additive? The fellow who rebuilt the distributor specified “NO ETHANOL”. Thanks. Answer - Submitted by Edward Mayo : If you can get ethanol free gas at 87 octane then you’re good to go, 87 will be just fine for that low compression engine. However, if you drive beyond the range of that gas station you will have to use 10% ethanol which will be all you’re likely to find in normal gas stations. I know the rebuilder said not to, but in the real world you will have to if you drive the car very far. Although we would all prefer real gas that just isn’t going to happen in the foreseeable future. If you feel better using an additive then by all means do, it won’t hurt.

Which Gasoline – 1973 911TQuestion: My Boxster idles pretty rough would like to check fuel pressure Answer - Submitted by Pedro Bonilla: To check fuel pressure, you’ll need a fuel pressure gauge connected to the fuel rail. But if you have a rough idle, I would first suspect a vacuum leak rather than a fuel pressure issue. Check the oil filler cap and it’s O-ring, check to make sure the dipstick is in all the way and has its O-ring also check the condition of the gas cap. Those are the most obvious, but there are also vacuum lines and check valves that can break or come loose. Also check the air/oil separator’s hoses and bottom connector (bellows).

Happy Porsche’ing,

One of my favorite things to do onthe web is to go into a carcompany’s web site, head straightto their configurator and buildsomething. Sometimes it will be astripper, just the basic car to seehow cheap I can build it. And moretimes than not, I go all in addingevery option to see how far I cantake it to the other extreme. I trydifferent colors, different interiors, different wheels and I spare noexpense on the performanceoptions. If you are going to buildsomething, you may as well go big.Right?

I love me some Porsches! Ownedtwelve of ‘em (and counting). Butyou know what? I’ve never bought anew one. The Turner master plansays I get to do that at some point inmy short life on this revolvingglobe. Thinking back to the BrandLoyalty series I wrote a couple ofmonth back, you know I’ve got toget my boys out of college, proppedup and on their own. Could takeyears. It’s funny, I even remindthem from time to time (likeweekly), that they’re holding meback. I am joking here, but justbarely.

Point is, I love the Porscheconfigurator. I build cars on it allthe time, like maybe 2-3 times permonth. OK, maybe 3-4 times permonth. But that’s all I’m admittinghere. I build Carrera’s (mostlyTurbos and GT3s), Boxsters,

Caymans (especially Caymans; love‘em), Cayennes (just in case we endup needing a new one), Mecans(because they are awesome),Panameras (have you read myaction-adventure novels? Theyfactor somewhat in the story line),and 918’s (cause they are stupidcrazy and it’s fun to see if you canconfigure one to $1,000,000—yeswith reversed pinky held to mouth,Dr. Evil style).

I will build one, giggle and say tomy wife, “Hey I built a new Porsche, wanna see it?” She’ll glance over atme, with a sideways look, glasseslowered to her nose, and ask if Iwent all in this time or not. No I willproudly exclaim that I built aninexpensive Cayenne - for her. Doesshe want to see it? Then she’ll ask ifit is like the other dozen I have“built” for her lately and not gettingher sarcasm, I’ll say this one isdifferent. (Yeah, it’s red.)Sometimes she looks, sometimesshe doesn’t and she reminds me (forlike the thousandth time) that we’renot doing anything before theaforementioned boys are out ofschool, cars paid off, bills paid off,ETC. Oh yeah—heard that onebefore. So then, what the heck, I’llreconfigure the car as a CayenneTurbo S with every option under thesun. $180K! Yeah, that’ll show her!

At least a few of you are familiar with my husband and his love of cars, and you may be familiar with a few of those cars…particularly the 996 twin turbo and the 991 GT3. Well, I can attest to you that I’ve heard about, and been involved with, quite a few “aftermarket upgrades” to these vehicles: new turbochargers, intercoolers, coilover suspension, upgraded clutch, ECU, larger front air splitter, rear stabilizer wing…I know, even he says it was a lot.

Well, since I’ve become pretty familiar with our vehicles and their upgrades, I thought it might be interesting to write an article on a few of the premier Porsche aftermarket companies. Like my husband, each of you probably feels the same: whether it’s your desire to go really really fast or stand out in a crowd, some of us just cannot be content with even the finest, best equipped new car as it leaves the Porsche showroom floor. Thankfully, the premium aftermarket performance industry is here to create some truly special driving experiences. Each of these companies does things a little differently, but all of them produce some of the world’s finest and most unique customized vehicles. If you want your Porsche to stand out, you don’t have to go any further than these guys…

CARGRAPHICCargraphic, an elite exotic car aftermarket tuning and restoration company, is located in Landau, Germany (north and east of Stuttgart, for all you geography buffs). Started in 1984 by Thomas Schnarr and his brother, they had quite humble beginnings—touring across Europe in a car and trailer to buy and transport OEM manufactured parts—selling them to the growing community of classic sports car owners. In time, and with an FIA GT European Championship of Historic Sports Car award, Cargraphic became well known for perfectly rebuilt classic sports cars. The company now boasts a worldwide dealer network, in some countries you would guess: Japan, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Britain, Sweden and Switzerland; but also a few countries you wouldn’t guess: Serbia, Poland, Turkey, Macau and Kazakhstan, just to name a few. In addition, Cargraphic works on almost every make and model of exotic car, just a few of the big names include: Lamborghini, McLaren, Aston Martin, Mercedes Benz, Corvette, Audi, and of course, Porsche.

With Simon Young, Cargraphics created their iconic and proprietary stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system. Pairing it with their own power upgrade kit, carbon fiber aerodynamic kit; and partnering with Bilstein for the suspension system, Cargraphic produces some of the finest, high performance aftermarket tuning for Porsche owners. I did not find pricing on their website for this combination of aftermarket parts, but a bit of further research confirms: the cost is well into the $20,000 USD range. Their innovative Pro Design—made up of high flow Y pipes and intake plenums—coupled with their ECU and performance software, and Mahle piston and cylinder sets—turns most Porsches into extreme driving machines.

RWB‘Rauh-Welt Begriff’ (Rough World Concept), or RWB as they’re more commonly known by Porsche tuning enthusiasts, hails from the automotive juggernaut country of Japan. Akira Nakai, the man behind the initials, has a passion for creatively carving up classic air cooled Porsche 911s and turning them into something half fine-art, half wide-bodied road beast. Combining Japanese and Euro tuning elements, RWB creates its own distinct style for the Porsche chassis: massively flared arches that feature the ultimate in wide body stance. Move over Kim Kardashian…Of course, these body kits are not inexpensive–930, 964, 993, and 996 wide body kits begin at $22,000 USD, with optional suspension packages, wheels, rockers and reflectors taking the price north of $30,000.

Nakai began his tuning journey in a small countryside body shop in Chiba-ken, located nearly in the center of Chiba prefecture along Japan’s Pacific coastline. These stunning beasts are now a common sight on Japan’s cherry blossom tree lined streets and radical racing circuits. Each RWB Porsche is truly one of a kind: Nakai probably couldn’t retrofit two Porsches in just the same way, even if he wanted to.

RUFRuf, as many of you die hard tuner heads may know, is an independent brand nearly unparalleled in style, standards, and performance in the Porsche tuning world. Alois Ruf, President and owner of RUF Automobile GmbH, can be said to have dreamed about car tuning since his youth. And Ruf has been tuning Porsches for so long and to such a high standard that they’ve been legally established as their own company with their own unique models; so most Ruf Porsches are body-

in-white, unmarked Porsches taken straight from Porsche’s factory. The company’s engineers—some call them ‘mad scientists’—turn these cars into the coolest performing sports cars around.

Ruf’s philosophy, like that of Porsche, is to constantly pursue perfection, ultimate style, and camaraderie among real car enthusiasts who love to live their passion for cars, driving, and racing. Ruf states their ‘recipe’ for cars is a powerful one, stemming from a visceral passion that has always existed at Pfaffenhausen: they “always strive to turn a great car into a greater one”. Ruf tunes all Porsche models: 911, 964, 993, 996, 997,991, 986, 987, 981, Macan, Panamera, and Cayenne; and all parts of a Porsche: engine and transmission, suspension, wheels and brakes, custom exterior and interior bodywork. Pricing depends upon what you have them do, of course. An entire beauty and performance treatment on a 993 can reach upwards of 35,000 Euros.

Ruf celebrated its 30th anniversary at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show by revealing a new Porsche supercar—a brand new CTR designed in tribute to the original iconic 1987 Yellowbird. This extensively modified Porsche heralded a list of firsts: an in-house designed carbon fiber monocoque chassis, tuning to 700 horsepower, speeds in excess of 225 mph. It was regarded as one of the fastest car in the world in 2017. The CTR “Yellowbird,” is Ruf’s brightly hued model based on the 930 generation Carrera 3.2. Talking about mad scientists…Ruf has a critically radical video on its website highlighting the new Ruf RODEO concept car. Alois and his wife Estonia unveiedl the car, her wardrobe gives you an idea of the car’s rather eccentric nature. They also introduced a really cool new Ruf green, production version of the SCR (carbon fiber chassis, alcantara and leather interior, titanium foot pedals and more). Here’s the link, be sure to look at it: https://ruf-automobile.de/en/

John Jennens, quick question: Can you do either and how much? Just joking…

TECHARTTechart: “Premium Refinement for your Porsche” is arguably one of the most sophisticated and least outrageous Porsche tuners around (see the Ruf RODEO first and then you’ll understand); that’s why for some this company often runs stealthy. Techart, a German tuning firm headquartered in southeast Germany, not too from Stuttgart, works from an OEM+ philosophy—modifying a range of Porsches with

Page 27: der Rückspiegelmm.pca.org/pdf/DerRuckspiegel/April2020.pdf · 2020-04-15 · der RÜCKSPIEGEL Vin Devers Autohaus 5570 Monroe Street • Sylvania, Ohio • 419-885-5111 • $459mo

subtle styling upgrades and exceptional quality to ensure that, unless you know better, you’d think the car had just rolled off your Porsche dealer’s showroom floor. Techart is so confident of its premium, hand tooled quality, they offer a new warranty for “individualized new and pre-owned Porsche vehicles” called Techart Protect.

Techart specializes in modifying and tuning the Porsche 911: 992, 991.2, 991.1, and 997; Boxter, Cayman, Panamera, and Macan; and they certainly can give you that supermodel look and performance…for which you should be willing to open your wallet pretty wide. For your 911 Turbo or Turbo S, you need to start with their Engine Management System, Techtronic, an “intuitive” permanent power boost—that in combination with their Sport Exhaust system, their Performance Powerkit T 2.1, and their Ram air scoop on the rear lid—unleashes an incredible “soundscape” that most of you diehard racers just love to hear. Even I’m starting to feel a bit woozy…

Techart has some truly amazing bodykit and styling options: front spoilers and aprons, rear wings and aprons, diffusers, side skirts, engine lids, roof spoilers, and customized exterior trims and surface finishes. They say the variety of Techart personalization for any Porsche model is literally endless. Here are two pictures I found on their website. Okay, I could get used to this bling, twist my arm.

But they don’t just offer complete kits—Techart caters to those looking for just a hint of personalization, selling individual aerodynamic/styling, and wheel accessories for you to equip at your (or your mechanic’s) leisure.

SINGEREverybody knows Singer by now—famous for its “Porsche re-imagined by Singer” philosophy. The company provides tasteful modification of classic Porsche 911’s for the discerning buyer who wants attention to detail and a truly one of a kind sports car. Singer’s website offers up a few amazing testimonials: Top Gear’s James May states Singer’s iconic black, orange and green hounds tooth retro interior design is “A love letter to the 911”; while Sam Smith of Road and Track says Singer’s 964 is “A black hole of awesome”. But perhaps this attribution to Singer’s classic 911 is the penultimate reference: “When the time came to leave this heartbreakingly wonderful machine behind, I felt something akin to grief, a masterpiece,” Dickie Meaden of EVO.

Singer is a restoration services company only, for the Porsche 911 and 964. They sell no individual parts or components. Headed by Rob Dickinson, he employs and empowers teams of restorers who are what I will call ‘the finest vehicle architects’ the world has to offer. These teams or “partners” are internationally located: Blackbird Automotive in Hong Kong, TwinSpark Racing in Netherlands, Saudi Falcons in the Middle East, Gomez Hermanos Kennedy in Puerto Rico, and Pfaff Automotive Partners in Canada.

To better understand the level of restoration this company offers, their mission statement is a good place to start:

“Combining our own unique perspective and our clients’ sources of inspiration, each vehicle is a truly unique and bespoke commission. But each car has three elements in common. Restored – strength, vitality and purity of purpose are restored to every component. Reimagined—the delicacy of the ’63 original, the race-bred chic of the ‘70s, the solidity of the ‘80s and the sophistication of the ‘90s, are reimagined in a singular jewel-like car. Reborn—the air-cooled 911, with every dial ‘turned up to eleven’ is reborn to its rightful position in the modern automotive hierarchy.”

Carbuzz does the best job at telling the story, so here it is: “Each model begins as an existing car, painstakingly sourced by Singer to ensure the right specification and condition vehicle is found. From there, Rob and his team modify both the interior and exterior with custom colors, finishes, upholstery and trims, to suit the particular style each vehicle is endowed with from the start—based on a theme chosen by the buyer and Rob himself. The attention to detail isn’t just aesthetic though, as Singer will overhaul engines to either a 3.8 or 4.0-liter displacement, with outputs ranging from 300 to as much as 500 hp. Engines are then given a unique soundtrack courtesy of a Singer exhaust, while the driving experience is made even sweeter by finely tuned and rebuilt original Getrag gearboxes—upgraded for improved feel and experience. Singer Porsches are never wildly different from what the originals may have been, but they’re tastefully re-imagined, and the attention to detail and quality of each build makes them incredibly sought after machines.” Carbuzz February, 2018 .

Now I understand the testimonials, as I personally love the vintage Porsches and their wholly beautiful styling. I believe Singer could add to their mission statement: “We pick you, you don’t pick us ….” Here’s a few pictures of their work:

HAMANNI present to you the flip side of Singer, and perhaps the most “out there” tuner, located in Laupheim, Germany between Stuttgart and Munich. Hamann is the brainchild of race car driver Richard Hamann, who had a passion and talent for truly extraordinary looking cars. Founded in the not too distant past, 1986, Richard infused the company with the spirit, fascination, and vision for everything unique; and as a result, Hamann prides itself on incredible product innovations, remarkable designs, and what they term: “high capacity technology”. Like all these tuning houses, their engineers work with a higher income, limited clientele that trends toward individuality, and certainly non-conformity. They strive for a particular feeling when designing Hamann tuned vehicles: “Pure Ecstasy”. With that under out belts…Hamann offers a complement of aftermarket products: accessories, aerodynamics, suspension and braking systems, exhaust systems, carbon fiber interior and exterior parts, and the very important wheel and tire bling.

While Hamann is an automobile aftermarket tuning company, they are also a car dealer, with exotic vehicles of many makes and models for sale on their website. Though more famous for their work with BMW, Land Rover, Maserati and Jaguar, what makes Hamann rather unique and included in this article, is their work with Porsche Macans and Cayennes—they will tune a 911 if you ask them nicely. In its repertoire: wide body styling, custom fairings, splitters, bumpers, and skirts, carbon fiber accessories, forged and monoblock wheels, and extreme custom Hamann exhausts. Of course brakes, suspension, and engines get upgraded too. Hamann-tuned Porsches may be an acquired taste, but no one can accuse them of being boring or unforgettable. And we know two things of certainty: Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, AND no-one ever said looking good came cheap.

Thank you for reading this article, I hope you enjoyed it! The following sources are noted for content and pictures: Cargraphic.com, Ruf Automobile GmbH, Techart.de, Carbuzz.com, Singer Vehicle Design, Hamann Motorsport, RWB.jpg

AROUND THE ZONEBY: LORI SCHUTZ

Hi Zone 4 Friends and Family,

Your region presidents and I met for our annual Zone 4 Presidents’ meeting on February 22 in Toledo. I’m thrilled to share that all 12 regions were represented by your President, and in many cases, also your Vice President. This speaks volumes to the dedication of your leaders and solid succession planning. We spent the day with our National Treasurer Craig Kugler, who gave a presentation from the Executive Council of PCA National. Ron Carr, our Region Procedures Chair, and Michael Soriano, our National Awards chair, also gave presentations. We ended the day with a great sharing session, and I’m sure they will all bring back a lot of ideas to our boards.

I had the pleasure of attending the Winterfest Banquet with Western Michigan Region and the Annual Banquet with Motorstadt Region last month. Fun times sharing details about up coming events this year. Amber Door from WMR shows off their Charity bucket, which is passed around at every WMR event and meeting. Since 2009, they have collected and donated over $18,000 to their region charities—$1, $5, $10 and $20 at a time. How about that! Are you doing the same?

As many of you know, I am a National Staff Scrutineer for the PCA Club Race Program. I worked my first race of the season in Austin at the Circuit of the Americas the last weekend in February. Zone 4 was represented by members of THE Mid-Ohio Region drivers. Congrats to Chip Henderson (far right) for his 2nd place trophy in the Sprint races, and first in the Enduro.
