USS ENTERPRISE HISTORY OF 1982

On 2 February 1982 USS ENTERPRISE g o t underway from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS), Bremerton, Washington f o r a week o f Sea Trials fol lowing h e r ex t ens ive t h r e e yea r overhaul . ENTERPRISE had a r r i v e d a t PSNS i n January 1979 f o r a comprehensive overhaul . Work accomplished on ENTERPRISE included a complete overhaul of e n l i s t e d be r th ing and d in ing f a c i l i t i e s , an upgrade o f h e r e l e c t r o n i c s u i t e and, f o r t h e f i r s t time s i n c e commissioning, a complete overhaul o f h e r p ro to type nuc l ea r r e a c t o r p ropuls ion p l a n t . Sea T r i a l s were a complete success demonstrat ing t h a t ENTERPRISE was f u l l y capable of assuming h e r commitments a s a n o p e r a t i o n a l s t r i k e c a r r i e r of t h e U.S. P a c i f i c F l e e t

Following Sea T r i a l s , ENTERPRISE r e tu rned t o PSNS, embarked dependents, p e t s and automobiles and depar ted f o r a r e t u r n t r a n s i t t o h e r permanent homeport, Naval A i r S t a t i o n , Alameda, Ca l i fo rn i a . ENTERPRISE a r r i v e d i n Alameda on 13 February. Following a week i n p o r t , ENTERPRISE departed en r o u t e an e leven day workup per iod i n t h e SOCAL OPAREA. The f i r s t p o s t overhaul c a r r i e r l anding occured on 22 February and t h e f i r s t c a t a p u l t launch took p l ace on t h e 27th. Th i s SOCAL sea period was t h e f i r s t o f e i g h t s e a pe r iods f o r ENTERPRISE p r i o r t o t h e 1 September depa r tu re from Alameda f o r deployment t o t h e Western P a c i f i c / I n d i a n Oceans. During t h e seven month per iod between r e t u r n i n g t o Alameda and deployment, ENTERPRISE spen t 87 days a t sea conducting i n t e n s i v e t r a i n i n g evo lu t ions i n p repa ra t i on f o r deployment. Included i n t h e s e t r a i n i n g ope ra t i ons were a very succes s fu l Ref resher T ra in ing (REFTRA), A i r Wing C a r r i e r Q u a l i f i c a t i o n s (CARQUALS), Opera t iona l Readiness Examination (ORE), Nuclear Weapons Acceptance In spec t ion ( N W A I ) , and FLEETEX 1-82.

On 1 September, ENTERPRISE departed on h e r 10 th deployment, en r o u t e t o t h e Western P a c i f i c (WESTPAC) and Ind i an Ocean (10) .

Missions undertaken by ENTERPRISE dur ing h e r deployment have included: demonstrat ing U.S. r e s o l v e t o main ta in free and u n r e s t r i c t e d a c c e s s t o i n t e r n a t i o n a l s e a s f o r a l l c o u n t r i e s , showing t h e f l a g , p r e sen t ing m i l i t a r y presence, conduct ing humanitar ian and sea rch and r e scue ope ra t i ons , and cont inued t r a i n i n g t o ensure preparedness t o conduct prompt and sus t a ined opera t ions .

ENTERPRISE t r a n s i t e d from Alameda t o P e a r l Harbor, Hawaii 1-12 September, conducting a j o i n t Ship ASW Readiness Evaluat ion Measuring (SHAREM) and A i r Readiness Evaluat ion Measuring (AIREM) e x e r c i s e from 7-12 September while en rou te .

ENTERPRISE remained i n p o r t P e a r l Harbor 13-16 September, l e av ing p o r t t h e morning of t h e 17th. While i n t h e v i c i n i t y of Hawaii on 19 September, a i r c r ews from ENTERPRISE s i g h t e d a s a i l b o a t i n d i s t r e s s and coord ina ted a succes s fu l s ea rch and rescue e f f o r t .

USS ENTERPRISE COMMAND HISTORY 1982

Following s e v e r a l days of f l i g h t ope ra t i ons near Hawaii, ENTERPRISE t r a n s i t e d t o t h e Northern P a c i f i c and conducted freedom o f t h e s e a s ope ra t i ons wi th t h e USS MIDWAY B a t t l e Group. MODLOC p o s i t i o n was 51N/171E, approximately 300 miles Southeas t o f t h e Union of Sov ie t S o c i a l i s t Republ ic ' s major P a c i f i c submarine base, Petropavlosk. The ENTERPRISE B a t t l e Group joined t h e SEVENTH F l e e t on 30 September and proceeded wi th t h e MIDWAY B a t t l e Group sou th , t o t h e e a s t of t h e Kur i l I s l a n d s and en t e r ed t h e Sea of Japan v i a t h e Tsugaru S t r a i t s on 3 October. ENTERPRISE depar ted t h e Southern Sea o f Japan v i a t h e Tsushima S t r a i t s on 9 October.

From t h e time ENTERPRISE neared h e r North P a c i f i c ope ra t i ons a r e a on 23 September u n t i l she depar ted t h e Sea o f Japan, she was t h e s u b j e c t o f ex t ens ive S o v i e t a i r , s u r f a c e , and subsur face s u r v e i l l a n c e . O f no t e was t h e unprecedented Sov ie t use of Backf i re a i r c r a f t on 30 September and 2 October t o r econno i t e r t h e ENTERPRISE/MIDWAY B a t t l e Groups.

ENTERPRISE conducted a p o r t c a l l i n Subic Bay, Republic of t h e P h i l i p p i n e s 14-18 October. Following t h e Subic p o r t c a l l , ENTERPRISE proceeded through t h e South China Sea en r o u t e t o Singapore. During t h e 19-24 October t r a n s i t of t h e South China Sea, ENTERPRISE embarked s i x Vietnamese r e fugees , o r "boat people." The re fugees were disembarked i n Singapore. After t h e 25-29 October Singapore p o r t ca l l , ENTERPRISE t r a n s i t e d no r th through t h e S t r a i t s o f Malacca and en t e r ed t h e Ind ian Ocean on 30 October. ENTERPRISE proceeded t o t h e North Arabian Sea where she opera ted u n t i l 19 November. From 20-23 November, ENTERPRISE t r a n s i t e d en r o u t e a 24-28 November p o r t c a l l i n Mombasa, Kenya. ENTERPRISE crossed t h e equa tor on 20 November and 3994 Polywogs were duly i n i t i a t e d i n t o t h e solemn mys te r i e s of t h e Ancient Order of She l lbacks a t l ong i tude 044-33 degrees e a s t . Af t e r depa r t i ng Mombasa, ENTERPRISE r e tu rned n o r t h t o o p e r a t e f o r t h e remainder o f 1982 i n t h e North Arabian Sea, t ak ing p a r t i n e x e r c i s e s JADE TIGER 82 and BEACON FLASH. On New Years Eve ENTERPRISE was southbound en r o u t e Diego Garcia f o r p a r t i c i p a t i o n i n Weapons Week 83.

AER 19-81, AIMD Avionics Corrosion Facility Installation. Equipment installed included two equipment wash stations, two drying ovens and a COMCO micro blaster with required improvements to ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Mechanized Repairables Management System (MRMS) was activated using a Wang 2200 MVP computer with nine remote input devices and five printers. The system is utilized by AIMD and Supply departments to provide automated repair capability screening. Specific component repair status, critical pool and AWP component tracking/information, and historical production/supply processing information, and reports. The system integrated the Supply and AIMD production management functions on a maintenance information system.

AER 1-82. ETS, (tech rep) berthing modification/improvements and installation of lounge and working/study area. Modifications were made to berthing 03-157-0L and 03-167-OL, and lounge/work area 02-167-34.

November-December On 6 November, CDR F. L. Tillotson was relieved as CAG by CDR R. P. Hickey. Exercise JADE TIGER - six day exercise provided the airwing the opportunity to participate in a joint forces exercise. Close air support, combat air patrol surface surveillance, anti-patrol boat, and anti-submarine missions were flown in the amphibious operations area in support of an amphibious assualt. Beacon Flash - a two day exercise allowing aircrews to hone their low level and navigations skills. Conducted real world surveillance of the Soviet Naval units operating in the Indian Ocean.

IV. Communications Department

Sea trials were completed in the Puget Sound, Washington area, numerous communications equipment deficiencies were identified and all major discrepancies were corrected by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard personnel and ship's force personnel before the following at-sea period.

A Communications Assist Team (CAT) from NAVCOMSTA San Diego, California visited ENTERPRISE for an assist in preparation for Refresher Training (REFTRA) and work-up operations in the Eastern Pacific. Up to date information relating to communications were discussed and given to shipboard communications personnel.

The Training Readiness Evaluation (TRE) was completed satisfactorally in preparation for REFTRA. No major discrepancies were noted in the communications area.

REFTRA was completed with the Communications Department receiving a grade of satisfactory. Of special note, the performance of CR Division received a "The best radio shack we have seen in over a yearw complement from the refresher training observers at the Fleet Training Group, San Diego.

ENTERPRISE received an annual Signal Security (SIGSEC) brief from Naval Security Group Activity (NAVSECGRUACT) Skaggs Island personnel. During the same time frame, communications personnel coordinated taping a presentation at KENT TV of the brief on telephone security, which was broadcast to the entire crew. The film was also made available to the USS CORAL SEA for their use.

Two 35 foot trussed High Frequency (HF) receiver whip antennas were replaced on the port side forward after they were lost at sea during the transit from Bremerton, Washington to Alameda, California during the month of March 1982.

The Operational Readiness Evaluation (ORE) was completed during the month of July with the Communications Department receiving a grade of outstanding.

Numerous antenna deficiencies previously identified were corrected by ship's force personnel and Shipboard Electromagnetic Compatability Improvement Program (SEMCIP) Team before the current Western Pacific deployment. The result was a reduction in the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) levels on board ENTERPRISE.

A predeployment combat systems review was completed. Numerous communications equipment deficiencies were noted and corrected on the spot or documented for accomplishment by ship's force personnel. Two areas of major concern were the numerous problems with Ultra High Frequency (UHF) transceivers and High Frequency transmitters.

Primary communications personnel attended a Communications Assistant Team (CAT) brief at NAVCAMSEASTPAC Honolulu, HI in preparation for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) deployment. Communications unique to the Western Pacific were the main topic of the brief.

FFAX weather facimile broadcast testing by satellite was completed and proved to be successful.

Commander Naval Air Pacific (COMNAVAIRPAC) San Diego 3-M annual inspection was completed satisfactorily.

Participated in Small Pipe 1-83 while operating in the Indian Ocean. This exercise tested ENTERPRISE'S HF Communications capability. As in previous Small Pipe exercises, the evolution was excellent training for circuit operators. Newly arrived junior personnel derived benefit from the HF operations.

V. Damap;e Control Department

During 1982 the Damage Control Department completed the final stages of the officer and enlisted manning structure necessary for departmental evaluation by higher authority. This included four new ensigns and for the first time on ENTERPRISE, a non-nuclear trained Damage Control (CDR) Department Head. The department's assets were concentrated on completion of a three year complex overhaul. Preparations for sea trial and transit to Alameda with a crew that had little or no at sea experience. The milestone for extended deployment received both short and long range preparations, with the major goal to deploy as scheduled.

The preparations for extended deployment included a series of inspections and assist visits: Flight Deck certification with NAVSEA and TYCOM Fire Fighting Assistance Teams; an inclining experiment conducted in Alameda, CA; the Training Readiness Evaluation (TRE) for Fleet REFTRA and REFTRA itself; the Operational Readiness Safeguard Exam (ORSE); Command Inspection; Nuclear Weapons Assistance Inspection (NWAI); various fleet exercises and the carrier qualifications in support of CVW-11 with the finale of the operaitonal readiness evaluation. All inspections were completed successfully with high marks. Several new highs were noted in the material condition of readiness postures during REFTRA and ORE.

The work of the complex overhaul and the readiness for the sea period were carried out by SUPSHIP San Francisco, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and ship's force personnel during both at sea periods and six upkeep periods consecutively conducted in Alameda, CA. This effort to use all available repair assets during in port periods continued after deployment began with availabilities in Pearl Harbor, Singapore, Subic Bay and Mombasa Kenya. Major rework of 100 plus watertight and ballistic doors; overhauls of 50 joiner doors and the entire drinking fountain system were carried out. Through the efforts of the Repair, Damage Control and Habitability Divisions the internal work request system reduced the out of commission lists throughout the ship.

During the deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean, the availability of ship's High Capacity Fog/Foam (HCFF) and Aqueous Fog Forming Foam Twin Agent Unit (AFFF/TAU) to the flight deck, hangar bays and propulsion systems was uninterrupted and outstanding PMS Required Action Rate (RAR) statistics were routinely achieved. No major fires occurred in 1982.

Upkeep period number one in port Alameda with SUPSHIP San Francisco. Successful training readiness evaluation for REFTRA conducted-no restrictive or major Damage Control (DC) Department discrepancies.

Upkeep period two in port Alameda: Water tight door work and preps for REFTRA continue; inclining experiment successfully conducted in port Alameda (8 hours). REFTRA conducted in San Diego OPAREA. DC considered excellent. Consistently satisfactory YOKE and ZEBRA material condition settings set. Three day assessment to evaluate Condition THREE with modified ZEBRA considered highly successful with mass casualty and multiple hit battle problems finale; supported CVW-11 airops/quals.

Upkeep period three conducted with SUPSHIP San Francisco, CSMP validation and 3-M assist conducted. Ship wide rehabilitation of water fountains completed by Habitability Division.

Air Wing quality of life support improvement; fifty joiner doors updated; inport upkeep period four conducted; ORSE preps in full swing. CSMP validation continues. Survival Support Devices (SSD) to Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) conversion started. MK-V gas mask deficit closed; distribution completed.

ENG/REA ORSE successfully supported with DC/QA efforts. Nuclear Weapons Assistance Inspection (NWAI) preps continue. Upkeep in port period five begins. NWAI successfully conducted with DC/ Flying Squad efforts highly praised by the Inspection Team. Preparations for READIEX, FLEETEX and ORE in full swing.

VII, Dental Department

The ENTERPRISE Dental Department in 1982 became fully operational following the extended overhaul period. All phases of dentistry to ship's company and embarked airwing and staff personnel, as well as emergency care to our battlegroup were provided. Subsequent to the expected increases in clinical demand during deployment, schedules developed were opened to maximize clinic utilization including extended evening sick call and oral prophylaxis availabilities. The prosthetic lab became fully operational and provided excellent support. Noteworthy contributions were made by all dental personnel in general quarters battle dressing station assignments and mass casualty drills.

Accomplishments:

All dental records converted to terminal digit.

Dental PMS program restructured resulting in greater efficiency and compliance by ship's personnel.

Planning for Central Oral Evacuation System installation completed and included in 1983 SRA period.

Continued material and equipment upgrades made to clinical and administrative spaces. (i.e LIFEPAC 5 Portable Cardiac Monitor and Defibrillator Unit, etc.)

Following prolonged problems with if4 S p e c i a l Frequency Motor Generator (SFMG), it was discovered t h a t t h e s l i p r i n g s were badly scored and p i t t e d . E l e c t r i c a l Div is ion overhauled #4 SFMG r e g u l a t o r and s l i p r i ngs .

The V e r s a t i l e Avionics Shop T e s t (VAST) 400 c y c l e manual bus t r a n s f e r was i n s t a l l e d , i nc reas ing t h e r e l i a b i l i t y and f l e x i b i l i t y of t h e 400 Cycle D i s t r i b u t i o n System. After s i g n i f i c a n t problems wi th t h e 400 Cycle A i r c r a f t S t a t i o n , o u t s i d e c o n t r a c t o r a s s i s t a n c e was u t i l i z e d t o i n s p e c t and r e p a i r a l l 400 Cycle S t a r t i n g S t a t i o n s on board.

Af t e r ex t ens ive t roubleshoot ing of t h e br idge microphone s t a t i o n , a f a i l e d r e l a y i n t h e 1 MC c i r c u i t r y was discovered and replaced.

E l e c t r i c a l Div is ion overhauled #2 S p e c i a l Frequency Turbine Generator s l i p r i n g s and aga in r e fu rb i shed t h e s l i p r i n g s on 114 S p e c i a l Turbine Generator. The s t a b i l i z e r gyro on t h e forward Mark 19 Gyrocompass f a i l e d and was replaced. Add i t i ona l ly , t h e standby power supply f o r t h e forward gyro was overhauled.

S p e c i a l Frequency Turbine Generator (SFTG) governor problems t h a t had plagued t h e s h i p s i n c e completion o f t h e overhaul were co r r ec t ed a f t e r complete disassembly o f t h e governor and modi f ica t ions t o t h e l ube o i l system on both SFTG's.

Experienced a major c a s u a l t y t o number 4 main engine r educ t ion g e a r s dur ing t h e t r a n s i t from P e a r l Harbor t o Subic Bay. The s h a f t was uncoupled a t sea by Machinery Div is ion personnel i n less than f o u r hours. Puget Sound Naval Shipyard d i spa tched a T ige r Team t o meet t h e s h i p i n Subic Bay and r e p a i r s were completed i n t h e f i v e day i n p o r t per ibd. Recovery of t h e main engine i nc lud ing recoupl ing of t h e s h a f t , an o p e r a t i o n a l check, v i b r a t i o n a l a n a l y s i s and f i n a l r educ t ion gea r i n s p e c t i o n was s u c c e s s f u l l y completed dur ing t h e s i x day t r a n s i t t o Singapore.

4-A main feed pump experienced a c a t a s t r o p h i c f a i l u r e o f i ts t u r b i n e journa l bear ing t h a t r equ i r ed rep lace- ment of t h e t u r b i n e r o t o r a t sea. These r e p a i r s were accomplished r a p i d l y by s h i p ' s f o r c e with no o u t s i d e a s s i s t a n c e . V i r t u a l l y a l l steam-out r e p a i r s have been completed a t sea. Equipment r e l i a b i l i t y has remained extremely h igh dur ing f i r s t h a l f o f t h e WESTPAC deployment.

During 1982, M-Division t r a n s f e r r e d over one m i l l i o n g a l l o n s of Distillate Fuel Marine (DFM) and d i s t i l l e d over 36 m i l l i o n g a l l o n s of water.

Post-overhaul sea trials were conducted 28 February 1982. All electronics and combat systems were tested and evaluated with excellent results. A significant amount of electromagnetic interference was detected during the sea trials and subsequently scheduled for evaluation and correction through SEMCIP/WCAP team visits.

AN/SPS-48C Phase I1 Certification was completed on 8 January 1982. Installation of the HP-9845 mini- computer (on loan from NAVOCEANSYSCEN) to enable onboard IREPS computations was completed.

Extensive testing and evaluation of the AN/SLQ-17(V)2 and AN/WLR-8(V)4 were completed as final post- overhaul acceptance. Commenced first operation of the AN/TPX-42A(V)8 Carrier Air Traffic Control Center-Direct Altitude Identification Readout (CATCC- DAIR) system. Installed in 1980 during the COH at PSNS Bremerton, the system was demonstrated operationally effective based upon a reliable capability to control aircraft utilizing IFF inputs for automatic tracking. A single change proposal was submitted recommending improvement of the video map functions. Between 22-27 February the Commander, Naval Electronic System Command assigned Naval Electronic System Engineering Activity the task of conducting Automatic Carrier Landing system (ACLS) certification. These tests were conducted successfully as follows:

The COMPUSCAN "Comet 11" Optical Character Recognition System was installed in main communications and included four days of on-the-job training for designated technicians. Shipboard technicians from the OE-04 division completed a total rewiring of the KENT-TV console and installed five television line amplifiers in the TV distribution system. FLEETEX 1-82 consisted of multiple warfare exercises including carrier versus carrier, and dual- carrier operations. COMCARGRU THREE evaluated many facets of the combat readiness of ENTERPRISE, including CATCC/air operations flexibility to conduct blue-water, case II/III operations. Numerous War-at- Sea ( WASEX) , Maritime Superiority Exercises ( MASEX) and alpha-strike missions were conducted. F-14 aircraft Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS) capabilities were exercised for the first time. ORE was conducted at the end of FLEETEX, for a period of four days. Overall scores were llexcellentv. On 15 July 1982, while participating in FLEETEX 1-82 in the SOCAL oparea, ENTERPRISE assumed the duties of search and rescue (SARI coordinator when radar and radio contact was lost with NH-300, a VA-22 A7E aircraft. A major SAR effort was conducted with both ENTERPRISE aircraft and surface units in company participating. Aircraft and pilot were presumed lost at sea. The Meteorologists (OA division) commenced environmental support for all of the Battle Group Foxtrot units in a total ocean-atmosphere package, culminating in support of dual-battle group operations during FLEETEX 1-82.

The Predeployment Operational Preparedness Plan (POPP) included a review of material and electrical conditions, configuration and installation, logistics support, training and personnel record documentation. Installation of the RACAL-6793 radio receiver was completed and operation evaluation of the unit commenced. Despite its location directly beneath the port catapult track, its operation since installation has been flawless. The AN/SRC-47 Flight deck communication system was installed for evaluation and operational testing, thus replacing

X I I I . Safety Department

The beginning of 1982 signaled t h e end of a long overhaul period a t Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The ENTERPRISE Safe ty Department had t o a d j u s t rapid ly from an i n d u s t r i a l shipyard environment t o t h a t of a c a r r i e r f l y i n g a i r c r a f t a t sea. The s a f e t y awareness of the crew has played a major r o l e i n the prevention of acc idents and mate r i a l s r e l a t e d damage during 1982.

From the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard t o becoming the mainstay of B a t t l e Group Foxtro t , t he end of 1982 found ENTERPRISE s a f e l y completing opera t ions under the most t ry ing weather condit ions of the Northern P a c i f i c and extended blue water opera t ions i n the Indian Ocean. During t h i s period ENTERPRISE flew i n excess of 18,600 f l i g h t hours.

ENTERPRISE c a r e f u l l y and methodically developed and implemented a s a f e t y or iented work plan designed t o ensure f u l l combat readiness with an embarked a i r wing within seven months. A s a r e s u l t , no f l i g h t r e l a t e d mishaps i n which the sh ip was considered a cont r ibut ing f a c t o r were encountered i n 1982. Reportable ground mishaps and a i r c r a f t crunches were a l s o n i l .

Several inpu t s , and contr ibut ions were submitted and received f o r ongoing s a f e t y programs. A l l Command Inspect ions , ORE, INSURV, 3-M, etc . , received g rade ' s ranging from exce l l en t t o outstanding.

No deaths were recorded due t o automobile o r motorcycle accidents . There were no major i n j u r i e s which resu l t ed i n p a r t i a l d i s a b i l i t y t o t h e vict ims, although some minor i n j u r i e s occurred a s a r e s u l t of motor vehic le acc idents , r ec re ra t iona l r e l a t e d mishaps and l i b e r t y inc idents .

Two s h i p ' s company deaths were recorded during 1982. One death re su l t ed from a man overboard on 7 November, and the second death was due t o an acc iden ta l f a l l on 20 November.

Three a i r wing deaths occurred i n 1982. A f l i g h t deck maintenance accident r e su l t ed i n the death of a man from VS-37 on 5 November. Two A-7 inc iden t s each r e s u l t e d i n the death of the p i l o t s ; one from VA-94 on 14 June and the o ther from VA-22 on 15 July.

XIV. Supply Department

In March 1982, the largest Aviation Consolidated Allowance List (AVCAL) ever developed, consisting of over 48,000 line items, was loaded aboard in support of the upcoming deployment.

In September, ENTERPRISE operated in the Northern Pacific and utilized for the first time a previously untested logistic channel. Materials were moved from Travis AFB, to McCord AFB and ultimately to Naval Station Adak. From this point material was moved to the ENTERPRISE via US-3A. The airhead at Adak proved successful and demonstrated that this facility could be expanded to support the requirements of a CV Battle Group.

In November, USS ENTERPRISE was selected as runner up in the annual COMNAVAIRPAC Food Service Excellence Award and advanced into the second round of the NEY Food Service Award competition.

XV. Training Department

During 1982 t h e Shipboard I n d o c t r i n a t i o n Course welcomed on board 1140 new ENTERPRISE crewmembers. The Tra in ing Department reques ted and adminis te red over 2409 quotas f o r Class I1An and "CW School , Shipboard and A i r c r a f t F i r e f i g h t i n g and O J T o r job r e l a t e d t r a i n i n g dur ing 1982. The P e t t y O f f i c e r Academy was s t a r t e d i n December and graduated 776 new Thi rd Class P e t t y O f f i c e r s du r ing 1982.

I n May, t h e Tra in ing Department conducted t h e f i r s t on board Program f o r Af loa t Col lege Education (PACE) s i n c e completion o f ENTERPRISE'S major overhaul . S i x hundred and seventy-f ive crewmembers have p a r t i c i p a t e d i n t h e PACE Program and accumulated over 1900 semester hours o f c r e d i t . Also i n May, Carrier Group THREE conducted a Command Inspec t ion . T ra in ing Department rece ived an o v e r a l l g rade of ou ts tanding .
