Astrology is a remarkable concern of the Hindu mind, with its genius
classification, analogy, interrelationship of all the categories of
human existence, whether corporeal, psychological, or divine. And
among these enormous endeavors still represented by literary remains, the
works of Varahamihira (6th cent., A.D.) stand out as monuments of
erudition. Of the celebrated woi-ks of Varahamihira, his greatest work on
personal astrology is the Brihat-Jataka. It is this work whish Shree
Rangachari has studied unremittingly f6r many years. He was already
advanced in these researches when I had the pleasure of discussing some of
those topics with him in his native Madras in the year 1963.
Shree Rangachart's chart, "The Science of Hindu Astrology," is a
thorough exploitation of the system of Hindu astrology as Varahamihira
preserved and critically presented it. These Hindu works present enormous
difficulties for the reader; and Shree Rangachari deserves the appreciation
of anyone interested in Hindu astrology for his painstaking restructuring
of the main ideas in a form where they are more easily visualized and
rationalized than in the traditional text. This chart and its
accompanying explanations should help a wide class of readers to asses 3 the
character of Hindu astrology and its potentiality for rendering the kind
of answers which believers in astrology expect.
