Department of History
Department of History is one of the active departments in Birla College, Kalyan. The department has been functioning very effectively and has highly sustained its academic performance. The faculty members are involved in research activities and have receive financial assistance from University of Mumbai, Pune University and University Grants Commission. Department of History has three dedicated faculty members. They constantly attend refresher courses and participate in various international and national seminars /conferences. All the three faculty members are actively involved as examiners, paper setters and moderators at University examinations. Prof. S. J. Shrivastav and Dr. (Mrs.) Swapna H. Samel are the members of the Syllabus Committee in the subject of History at UG and PG level of University of Mumbai. All the three members are resource persons for postgraduate teaching in their own college and also in neighbouring colleges. Dr. (Mrs.) Swapna H. Samel is Executive Member of Epigraphy Society of India. Department of History offers following courses:
1. B.A. History (3 Units English Medium) 2. B.A. History (6 Units Marathi Medium) 3. M.A. History Part-I (Commenced from 2009-10) 4. M.A. History Part-II (Commence from 2010-11) 5. Ph.D. (Arts) Degree in History (2007)
UG and PG Courses:
Department has adequate infrastructure to meet requirement for teaching the subject and for pursuing research. Department conducts 3 year integrated course in B.A. (History) very successfully. Result of T.Y.B.A. History is consistently higher than the University average results. 3 of our students have secured 3rd Rank in T.Y.B.A. History Merit List at University level in the academic year 2005-06 and 2004-05 consequently. The department has commenced M.A. in History in 2009-2010 as the surrounding colleges have not introduced the said course so far.

Dr. (Mrs.) Swapna Hemant Samel has been working as Associate
Professor, in Department of History, Birla College since 1990 and from
December 2013 to May 2015 as Principal, and Sr. Vice Principal at Birla
College Kalyan. since May 2015,
Dr Swapna Samel is recipient Fulbright- Nehru Visiting Lecturer
Fellowship, Heras –Tata Post Doctoral Fellowship, and Indus Foundation
Research Excellence Award. She is an excellent teacher, keen researcher
and an able academic administrator. 11 students have completed their M.
Phil ,1 student of Ph. D Degree, and 8 students are pursuing Ph. D. under
her guidance.
She has 1 Major Research Project (by UGC) and 6 Minor Research
projects (2 funded by UGC and 4 funded by University of Mumbai) to her
credit. She has nearly 45 research publications in National and
International Journals on the topics like Epigraphy, Portuguese
Inscriptions, Dalit Movement. She has participated in conferences at USA,
Turkey, Portugal, Sri-lanka, Bangkok and Singapore
As Director, Center for Studies in Epigraphy, she has conducted courses
in ancient languages like Pali and Sanskrit. Dr. Swapna Samel, for the past
6 years has headed as Convener; International Linkage Programme. As
the Coordinator, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, she played a pivotal role
in the ‘Best College Award’ of University of Mumbai 2008.

Dr. (Mrs.) Suvarna S. Jadhav is working as Assistant Professor, in
Department of History, Birla College since 2002.
She has been awarded Ph. D. degree by University of Mumbai for the Title
“History of Mahad Satyagraha, 1927” in 2014. . She is a recognized
research guide for Ph. D. in 2016 at the Birla College Centre for Ph.D.
affiliated to University of Mumbai and is instrumental in further
development of Ph. D. Research Center, She is an excellent teacher and
keen researcher,
She has 3 Minor Research projects funded by University of Mumbai; she
has individually authored one book, contributed two study materials for
T.Y.B.A. History students of distant education of University of Mumbai, and
17 research papers to her credit. She has presented and published
research papers at National and International Conferences and Seminars.
She visited Clayton States University under International Faculty
Exchange Programme, and delivered lecture at UG and PG level.
