Hello, Friends!

We hope you are just excited to be a part of IIT Bombay as we are. Hearty congratulations on

this incredible feat! Institute Students Companion Program (ISCP) welcomes you to one of

the most resourceful campuses in India. The next two or three years are going to be the most

memorable, impactful, insightful and life changing years which will fly past. We hope you

imbibe as much as you can and more from your peers, seniors, faculty and staff. Here’s to

your first glimpse of ISCP, the backbone of your journey through the mecca of learning.

ISCP is a program within IIT Bombay Post Graduate (PG) student community. Its primary

objective is to develop an atmosphere of cordial interaction amongst the PG entrants and the

PG seniors. It will encourage the flow of information, knowledge, and sharing of experiences

among the students.

Life in IIT Bombay can appear a little daunting at times, balancing between the academic

workload and the plethora of extra-curricular activities. And that is where ISCP can help you

blend in and make the most of it. ISCP strives to provide a senior student companion as a

mentor to all newly admitted students. New entrants can contact their assigned companion to

discuss their academic and non-academic issues or concerns. Student Companions enable the

smooth and gentle transition from the graduation days to post-graduation days. New entrants

also feel assured that there is somebody on campus to help them and listen to their concerns.

Many a times they find a caring friend in companions.

What to expect from a Student Companion:

• Initial information about the campus, courses, academics and extracurricular

activities. • Support in case of any problem or difficulty. • Organization of various academic and non-academic activities for student’s

development. • Continuous interaction and feedback from students on their needs and requirements.

In short, this is a program by the students of IIT Bombay, for the new students to ensure their

overall development through utilization of all the available resources at IIT Bombay.

Let the learning begin. Feel free to contact us anytime!

IIT Bombay is located at Powai, which is a Eastern Suburb in the north-eastern part of

Mumbai. Mumbai is a long narrow island, thrusting southwards into the Arabian Sea.

It can be broadly divided into four zones. South Bombay (Colaba, CST,Fort,

Chruchgate, Nariman Point), Central Bombay (Dadar, Bombay Central, Worli), the

Western Suburbs (Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Borivali), and the Eastern Suburbs

(Kurla, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Kanjur Marg, Vikhroli). There is also New

Bombay (Vashi, Turbhe) across the Thane Creek on the mainland.

Public Transport Mumbai has one of the most efficient and reliable public transport

networks. One can travel by autorickshaws or taxis to reach IIT from the nearest

stations (auto-rickshaws, however do not go further south than Sion and Bandra). For

longer distance, you can use either the BEST Bus Network or the Mumbai Local train

System.

Suburban Railway Transport Those coming by Central Railway Suburban train will

have to get down at Kanjur Marg, Vikhroli or Ghatkopar which are the nearest

stations from IITB. If you are coming by the Western Railway Suburban train you will

have to get down at Andheri, Bandra, Goregaon or Malad. We give below the road

network to reach IITB along with the approximate bus, auto-rickshaws and Taxi fares.

Stations for through trains coming to Mumbai

There is a terminus at Kurla where some Central as well as Western Railway Trains

terminate. There is no convenient bus route from Kurla terminus to IITB. An

autorickshaw is the best option. However it would be more economical to take a

suburban train from Kurla to Kanjur Marg and then take an auto from Kanjur Marg to

IITB Campus.

Western Railway- Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali

Central Railway - CST, Dadar, Kurla, Thane

International flights land at Terminal 2, Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport

(Sahar Airport), which is about 10 kms from IIT Bombay. The Domestic Airport is at

Terminal1A and Terminal1B (Santa Cruz), which is about 15 kms. Call taxis and Pre-

paid taxis and auto-rickshaws are available at the airports.

International Conference on Advances in Energy Research (ICAER)

DECEMBER 12-14, 2017:

The global energy concerns of depleting fossil fuels and climate change puts

forward great challenges for the researchers. The need is to pause, take stock of

current status in research and development in energy and have brainstorming

sessions to set guidelines for the future path.

Department of Energy Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay organized the 6th

International Conference on "Advances in Energy Research" to provide an

excellent platform to know, exchange new ideas, discuss new developments and

finally look at the challenges ahead.

The day-long event will feature technical presentations and interactive posters

on wide variety of topics like Micro grids, Solar Photovoltaics, Solar Thermal

Technologies, Battery and Storage, Fuel Cells, Power converters and

Transformers and many more by graduating students of Dual Degree, M.Tech

and Ph.D. programs.

Grading: For every course taken by a student he/she is assigned a grade based

on his/her combined performance over the semester in all the assessments in

that course. These grades are described by the letters AP,AA, AB, BB, BC, CC,

CD, DD, FF, FR and DX, each of which not only indicates a qualitative

assessment of the student's performance but also carries a quantitative (numeric)

equivalent. A student passes the course if he/she gets any grade in the range of

AP to DD, but fails if he/she gets the grade FF, FR or DX. The grade DR

indicate ‘course dropped'.

Credits: Every course you take has a credit attached to it. For instance, a 6

credit course equals 3 hours of lectures per week and similarly has more effect

on the final CPI, than say a 4 credit course.

CPI calculation: Lets ease through this process by taking a basic example.

There are five courses in the first semesters excluding lab and seminar of an

M.Tech energy student. Four courses are worth 6credits and one is a 4 credit

course. Lab and seminar has 4 credits each. So in total there are 36 credits in

the first semester. The complete list of compulsory courses and electives offered

can be viewed from ASC site and ESE site.

Drop/FailCourse: A core course can be dropped within a semester and has a

specific deadline. It has to be repeated during the course of the post-graduation

to get the final degree. It can be taken in the autumn, spring or summer

semester, subject to the availability of a professor and a minimum of five

students taking up the course. The same rule is applied when a student gets a FR

grade.
