MTM: Research groeps: Composite Materials

The Composite Materials Group has four researchfocuses:• Composites on Micro- and Nano- Level: “engineering” by intelligent

placement of nano-reinforcements• Composites on Macro- and Meso- Level: experimental and

modelling studies of textile composites, random fibre composites, textiles, porous materials and biomaterials

• Natural and biobased composites: fibre morphology and mechanical performance, fibre-matrix interfacial adhesion, novel fibre processing methods

• Processing and product development: concurrent optimisation of products and manufacturing processes

Page 16: Department Metallurgy and Materials Engineering ( MTM )

MTM: Research groeps: Metals and Alloys

The Metals and Alloys group deals mainly with theplasticity of advanced metallic materials. Its activitiesinclude: • Analysing and modelling of microstructure and texture evolution during

plastic deformation• Deriving physics-based constitutive laws for their mechanical

behaviour• Developing dedicated characterisation methods for their complex

microstructures• Participating in the development of innovative deformation processes

MTM: Research groeps: Materials Performance and Non-Destructive Testing

The Materials Performance and Non-destructiveTesting group investigates the long-term behaviour andreliability of materials. Damage development duringdifferent loading types is studied, using a number ofNon-destructive and advanced monitoring techniques:Acoustic emission, real-time microfocus X-rayradiography, nano- and micro-computed tomography, eddycurrents, ultrasound, optical fibre sensors etc… Besides polymers, ceramics and metals, research is alsodealing with advanced materials such as particulate orfibre reinforced composites and cellular materials.
