    INTRODUCTION

Interferon (IFN )therapy for chronic hepatitis C isthe

only treatment for chronic hepatitis C

Combination therapy with pegylated IFN (Peg-

IFN) and ribavirin has been recommendedwidely as the first choice for chronic hepatitis Cpatients with high viral loads

Side effects from therapy are fatigue, influenza-like syndrome and neuropsychiatric symptoms

it has been reported that hepatitis C infectedpatients have significant oral health needs

dental caries is significantly worse for HCV-infected patients than patients in general

    OBJECTIVES

    To determine whetherdental problem

    delayed the initiation

    of IFN therapy forHCV-infected patient

    METHODS

    570 HCV-infected patienttreat with Peg-IFN

    monotherapy or Peg-IFN/ribavirin combination

    therapy required to

    undergo hospitalization fortwo weeks

Xerostomia detection, which requires chewing ona piece of gauze for 2 min

Serum samples wereexamined for the presenceor absence of markers ofHCV and HBV infection, analyzed by quantitative

    PCR assay

    RESULT

From 570 patients with HCV-related liverdiseases, documented six whose dentalproblems delayed the initiation of Peg-IFNtherapy ages ranged from 25 to 67 years.

Dental problem found that delayed initiation ofIFN therapy : periapical periodontitis acute alveolar abcess

    periodontal disease pulpitis wisdom tooth

    DISCUSSION

The results indicate that oral health care may be required before HCV-infectedpatients undergo IFN therapy.

In a Japanese Phase III trial of Peg-IFN, 100 patients after IFN therapy still havethe HCV RNA with the oral side effects: gingival bleeding and gingival swelling (6%), Toothache (4.5%), gingivitis and periodontitis (3%), dental caries (1.5%), stomatitis and cheilitis (19.1%), disorder of taste (15.6%), dry mouth (6.5%), glossalgia and glossitis (4.5%), perioral paresthesia (2.5%), oral pain (0.5%), Oral mucosal damage (0.5%), oral lichen planus (0.5%), Oral hemorrhage (0.5%), dry lip (0.5%), and bulla of lip (0.5%).

    ...CONT DISCUSSION

These findings indicate that dentalmanagement of HCV-infected patients isrequired before IFN therapy

health education is also required for HCV-infected patients and dental practitioners formaintanance the oral hygiene to lessen the

    oral side effect
