Message from the President

I am privileged to write this massage as the 86th

president of Sri Lanka Dental

Association which is the main academic body for all Dental Practitioners in the

country.

There are many academic bodies related to different Dental specialties but SLDA is

unique that its roll encompasses all the specialties, General Dental practice and

Dentistry related to Armed forces.

It also promotes and encourage the Research activities among all the member and it

Journal is open to all the members to publish their researches.

During this year we will have lot of activities related to continuing education on the

membership. We have initiated Clinical Discussion Forum where the membership can

come up their case to discuss with panel of expertise.

Regional sessions are to be organised in every province stating from North/East from

October.

We are having a huge task ahead this year, for the preparation of APDC 2020 and to

organise World Oral Health Day in March 2019.We have already done the ground work

for those events during the FDI conference and APDC council meeting held in

Argentina on September this year.

I am confident that I can get the support from all the members of the Association and I

assure my unconditional commitment to the betterment of the Sri Lanka Dental

Association.

Events

Professor S B Dissanayake Memorial Oration and the Annual Scientific Sessions of 2018 was held on the theme “Creating Healthy Smiles” on 22

nd& 23

rd June 2018 at Hotel Taj

Samudra, Colombo with a participation of distinguished invitees and over 250 members including their families. The inauguration ceremony was held on the 22

ndofJune 2018.

Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Minister of Health & Indigenous Medicine was the Chief Guest.

Dr. Palitha Abeykoon, Chairman, National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol, was the Guest of Honour

The SLDA Oration for 2018 was delivered by

Dr. K M S Kosgoda, Consultant OMF Surgeon, Teaching

Hospital, Anuradhapura.

The SLDA Gold Medal for the most outstanding student at the

final BDS examination (2017/2018) too was awarded in this

ceremony. Ms. W S K Chandrarathne received this honor by the

Chief Guest.

The 86th

year Annual Scientific Sessions of the SLDA was held

overtwo days (22nd

& 23rd

June 2018) at Hotel Taj Samudra on

timely and interesting topics related to ‘Creating Healthy

Smiles”. The Scientific Programme on 22nd

presentations while the programme on the 24th

National Dental Hospital, Colombo, Dr. Sriyani Basnayake,

Consultant Orthodontist, Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Colombo,

A Dental Trade Exhibition parallel to the conference was held

on both the days with participation of over 33 reputed Dental

& Pharmaceutical companies.

Two Pre-conference and one post conference workshops were

conducted at the SLDA Auditorium on 21st

& 24th

June 2018

respectively.


The Annual General Meeting

The AGM of Sri Lanka Dental Association was held on 23rd

June

2018 at 3.30 p.m. at the Hotel Taj Samudra. The meeting was

chaired by the President, Dr.Hilary Cooray. The following

The Ceremonial Induction of 86th Year

President

Dr. Gamini Navaratne was inducted as the 86th

year President

of the SLDA at a grand ceremony held on the 29th

of

September 2018, at the Eagles’ Lagoon View, 20th

Milepost,

Kurana, Negombo with a participation of over 150 invitees

including Past Presidents, SLDA Members and other

professionals.

Dr. Reggiee Goonathilake, Past President SLDA graced the

occasion asthe Chief Guest.

.

Dr. Gamini Navaratna was inducted by the out-going

President, Dr. Hilary Cooray.

Delivering the Presidential address, Dr. Gamini Navaratne

assured to continue the good programmes initiated by Past

Presidents and solicited the support & cooperation of the new

council elected. He thanked all participants who attended the

induction ceremony and conveyed his gratitude to the Chief

Guest. Ceremony was followed by dinner hosted by Dr. & Dr.

(Mrs.) Gamini Navaratne.

Activities of SLDA Branch Associations SLDA Northern Regional Sessions conducted on 27

th&28

October 2018 at Hotel Nelly, Vavuniya.

Sessions comprised of two workshops and lectures with a participation of more than 70 dental surgeons. Inauguration ceremony was held on 27

th October 2018. Dr. Chandana

Gajanayake Deputy Director General Dental Services was the chief guest. Key Note speech was delivered by Dr. P Sathiyakumar, Consultant Orthodontist, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna. Session with Two Guest speakers on the 28

International Events

FDI – World Dental Congress was held from5th

08th

September 2018 in Brunei, Argentina. It was

attended by Dr. Gamini Navaratna, President as the

chief delegate, Dr. Vipula Wickramasinghe, Hony.Gen.

Secretary, Dr. Suresh Shanmuganathan, Dr. Pubudu C

Perera, were the other delegates

CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Two monthly Clinical Meetings were held during the

first quarter of the SLDA year under its Continuing

Education Programme on new look.

DR. W G WIMALADARMA Trophy 2018

The Annual Inter – branch cricket tournament of the SLDA was

held successfully on 27th

May 2018 at the Buddhasasa

Grounds, Pelawatta, Bataramulla

Teams representing branch associations from Western,

Central, North western and Northern Provinces participated in

the tournament.

Northern Province team lifted the Wimladarma trophy 2018.

Around 100 Dental surgeons from all over the country were

present to witness the tournament and enjoyed a lot of fun-

filled activities. The family members of late Dr. W G

Wimaladharma also attended the event.

A Six-a-side Soft Ball Cricket Tournament of the OPA was

played on 17th

August 2018 at Thurstan College Cricket

Grounds with the participation of big gathering. About 20

teams representing many professional Associations were took

part in the match. SLDA team led by Dr. PushpikaAbeyratne

Appointment of New Journal Editor

Dr. Dileep de Silva, Past President & Dr. B M H S KBanneheka,

Senior Lecturer, Dental Faculty of University of Peradeniya

have been appointed as Co-Editors of the Journal by the

SLDA council and it will be effective from January 2018 since

three years term of current Co- editors will lapse attend of

the year.


APDC 2020 IN SRI LANKA

SLDA will be hosting the42nd

Asia Pacific Dental Congress at

BMICH, Colombo 9th

– 13th

June 2020.

Officials of APDF and SLDA singed a MOU pertaining to APDC 2020 on 29
