(UK) Dr. Al M Latif BDS (Lond) MSc Con Dent (Lond) by DR AL LATIF E-cigarettes are often viewed as a healthy alternative to conventional cigarettes. Instead of smoke, they produce vapor. Though contrary to what one might think, e-cigarette vapor isn't just water. It doesn't contain tar compounds like regular cigarette smoke, but it does expose the oral tissues and the respiratory tract to compounds produced by heating the vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and nicotine aromas in e-cigarette liquid. This vapor can be equally if not more damaging to mouth cells than cigarette smoke. Such damage can lead to an array of oral health problems, including gum disease, tooth loss, and mouth cancer. Less serious adverse effects include throat irritation, vomiting, nausea, and coughing. One study of E-cigarettes and the lining of the oral cavity showed that after just three days of use, the vapor of an e-cigarette killed off epithelial lining cells at a rate of 53% compared to 2% with no E-cigarette usage. This is worrying as the oral lining is generally the first line of defense against microbial attack, inflammation and gum disease. More research is required in the field to see if there is a long-term increase risk of oral cancer. As the end of 2017 is rapidly approaching, we are happy to welcome you to our Fall 2017 newsletter. We hope everyone has enjoyed their summer, and is embracing the rest of the year in good health. Introducing theSmile Dental LabLast year, we introduced our newest technology- our Digital Scanner. It removes the need for messy impressions for crowns, bridges and veneers. We are excited to share with you our ability to create custom CAD/CAM porcelain work for patients, sometimes as quickly as 2 to 3 days.

Instead of using the conventional materials to take the dental impressions, we use a more ecient technique with our digital scanner. After the scan is taken by the dentist and assistant, the scan is sent to our online program, where our dental technician designs your case using state of the art software. Depending on the size of the case, this can take anywhere from 1-2 hours. Once the design is complete, the technician prepares special materials and sends the case directly to the milling machine. In about 2 hours, the machine has completed the fabrication of the case. Our technician then uses a series of stains and glazes to create a realistic match to your existing dentition. Once the staining and glazing has been perfected by the technician, the case then “bakes” for 8 hours, to harden the porcelain material which ensures it will withstand the pressure exerted in the mouth. The technician then sends the completed case back to the dentist, who places the restoration.

Why do we need to removeimpacted wisdom teeth? Impacted wisdom teeth do not always show symptoms, meaning you could have them and not even realize it. The American Dental Association recommends that people between the ages of 16 and 19 have their wisdom teeth evaluated. You will need to have a Panoramic X-ray completed to evaluate how the teeth are coming in and if they may cause any problems in the future. Impacted wisdom teeth that are left untreated can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, infection and overcrowding. Common problems/symptoms from wisdom teeth include:

Pericoronitis – when plaque causes an infection of the gum that surrounds the tooth.Cellulitis – a bacterial infection in the cheek, tongue or throat.Abscess – when pus collects in your wisdom tooth or the surrounding tissue due to a bacterial infection.Cysts and benign growths – very rarely, a wisdom tooth that hasn't cut through the gum develops a cyst (a fluid-filled swelling).
