Walk 1: Skelmanthorpe Duration: 55 mins.Start point: Skelmanthorpe Council Offices/Library

With Skelmanthorpe Council Offices/Library entrance behind you turn left up NewStreet. When you are almost at the top of New Street there is a public footpath signon the right hand side of the road. Follow this and walk along the footpath betweenthe houses. At the end of the footpath you will come out on Radcliffe Street, turn leftand walk a very short way and you will see another footpath sign on your left. Walkup the five steps and follow the path along next to a small field, then walk straightahead and through a ginnel. You come out on Lidgett Lane with the cricket clubstraight in front of you. Turn left along Lidgett Lane. At the end of Lidgett Lane goround to the left and onto Cross Lane. At the end of Cross Lane follow the road roundonto Thorpes Crescent and then right onto Meadow View. At the end of Meadow Viewturn right onto New Lane and then take the first left turning onto Pickles Lane. Atthe end walk straight ahead down the path between the bollards. Turn left ontoCommercial Road walk along past the Co-op and then turn left onto New Street youare now back outside the Council Offices.

Walk 2: Birdsedge High Flatts CircularDuration: 50 mins.Start point: Penistone Road to the side of the Junior School

Start on Penistone Road to the side of the Junior School next to the War memorial.Turn right along Penistone Road (towards High Flatts) then almost immediatelyright onto Birdsedge Lane. Turn left onto Spring Field Drive. Follow the roadaround to the right on to Highfield Avenue until you are back at Birdsedge Lane.Turn left and walk along Birdsedge Lane. Take care as there is no pavement. At theend of Birdsedge Lane turn left onto Broadstone Road. At the cross roads turn leftonto Windmill Lane. When you get back to Penistone Road turn left and walk backtowards Birdsedge, cross over Birdsedge Lane and back to the bench.

Walk 3: Upper DenbyDuration: 40 mins.Start point: the George Pub in the centre of Upper Denby

With your back to the George Pub in the centre of Upper Denby turn left downDenby Lane, then immediately left again down Fair Fields. At the end turn left andwalk to the end of the road and then keep walking straight forwards along in frontof a row of garages towards the footpath sign. Follow the footpath sign along thegrassy lane (this can be muddy), at the end of this lane turn left onto GreenfieldClose. Walk along Greenfield Close then turn left and walk down Bank Lane. Turnright onto Denby Lane walk past the church and the junior school then turn leftonto Greenacre Drive. Follow Greenacre Drive all the way round and then turn leftonto Fall Edge Lane and walk back down into Upper Denby, cross over Denby Laneas there is only a pavement on the far side. Walk down Denby Lane and then turnright onto South Croft take the first left and walk around South Croft and back toDenby Lane, turn left and walk back to the George Pub.

Walk 4: Upper CumberworthDuration: 45 mins.Start point: Upper Cumberworth Post Office

Start with your back to Upper Cumberworth Post Office and turn right onto BarnsleyRoad, cross over at the crossing and then turn left and then right (around The StarPub) onto Carr Hill Road. Take the first right back down onto Barnsley Road. Crossover so you can walk on the pavement, then turn right down Barnsley Road. Crossover Cumberworth Road and continue down Barnsley Road. Turn left at the footpathsign up a little ginnel/lane and you’ll come out on Hollybank Avenue. Turn right andwalk to the end of Hollybank Avenue and in the left hand corner is a ginnel followthis along and round the corner. When you get to the steps up into the graveyardfollow the footpath sign to the right (don’t go into the graveyard walk along theoutside of the bottom wall.) Turn left at the end onto Eunice Lane (which is a grassylane). Cross over Cumberworth Lane and turn left. Take the next left down HollybankAvenue and then take the first right onto Dearnfield and follow this back toCumberworth Lane. Turn left and walk back to the Post Office.

Walk 5: EmleyDuration: 45 mins.Start point: Emley Post Office on Church Street

Stand with your back to Emley Post Office on Church Street and turn left then leftagain onto Upper Lane. Opposite the end of Saville Avenue cross over the road andhead up the path which leads to Rishworth Avenue (mini road with keep clearmarkings and a footpath sign). Take the first left onto Phoenix Avenue, then firstleft again down Boomhey Avenue, then right onto Upper Lane. Take the next leftalong Glebe Close. At the end turn left along School Lane. Opposite the end ofSaville Street is Rodley Lane. Walk down Rodley Lane – it turns into a track. At theend turn right down another track called Thorncliffe Lane then turn left onto CrossLane (this can be muddy) which is another track. Turn left onto Rectory Lane thenleft onto Grange Drive. Back onto Rectory Lane turn left and keep walking alongRectory Lane which turns into Church Lane till you get back to the Post Office.

Walk 6: Clayton West Duration: 1 hour.Start point: Clayton West Post Office, Church Lane

With your back to the Post Office turn left along Church Lane. Take the second leftup Newlands Avenue. At the top turn left onto Holmfield Close. When you get toHigh Street turn left. Take the first right along Bilham Road. Walk down BilhamRoad until almost the end (it turns into a track a bit further along), just past thelast house on the left is a public footpath sign follow this footpath to the left. Goover the stile into the field, a short distance into the field on your left is a gate intothe Millennium Green – go through this. Walk straight forward to across the greenheading for the metal gate. Do not go through the gate, but turn sharp right tofollow the path to the cow. At the cow and community tile dial take the footpath tothe left down to another gate. Go through the gate on to Scott Hill. Turn right downScott Hill and then turn left along Park Road. Turn left along Wakefield Road walkunder the railway bridge. Turn left onto Albert Road and then first left onto IngsMill Avenue. At the end of Ings Mill Avenue turn left onto Church Lane – from hereit is a short distance back to the Post Office.

Walk 7: Denby Dale Duration: one hour (55 minutes if use alternate route)Start point: Denby Dale Library

With Denby Dale Library behind you walk onto Wakefield Road and turn left: youare walking towards Scissett. Walk past the cricket ground and just before you getto the newsagents on your right there is a lane to your left before the bus stop.Walk up this lane and onto Gilthwaites Lane. Walk up Gilthwaites Lane past thefirst left turn (Withyside) and then opposite the second left turn (also Withyside) isa ginnel on the right hand side of the road. Follow this onto Gilthwaites Crescent.Turn left onto Gilthwaites and then left along Pringle Rise. Turn right ontoGilthwaites Lane and walk past the junior school. *Turn left down Greenside and atthe end of Greenside bear left onto Woodside, walk around Woodside and then turnright onto Leak Hall Lane. At the end of Leak Hall Lane (where alternate routemeets up) walk onto the track which continues Leak Hall Lane. After the firsthouse on the right take the footpath on the left through a gate and follow the pathalong next to the fence and through another gate. Walk along this footpath and youwill come out on Commercial Road, turn left down into Denby Dale. Just below theMethodist Church on the right take the lane, through the bollards called WesleyTerrace, down behind the houses onto Wakefield Road. Cross straight overWakefield Road walk down Norman Road and turn left on Sunny Bank. At the endturn left onto Miller Hill and up onto Wakefield Road. Turn right along WakefieldRoad and cross over at the crossing and you are back at the Library now.

* Alternate RouteAlternate if you feel confident about walking on rough footpaths and are wearing stoutshoes walk to the end of Gilthwaites Lane onto the track then left onto the footpathfollow along past Wither Wood to Leak Hall Lane.

Walk 8: Kitchenroyd Loop Duration: 25 mins.Start point: The bus stop on Wakefield Road

Start at the bus stop on Wakefield Road opposite the phone box. Facing the phonebox across the road turn right and walk along Wakefield Road towards Denby Dale(away from Scissett). Keep walking down Wakefield Road past Lower Putting Milltill you get to a footpath sign pointing to a track on the left hand side of the road(just this side of house number 255 Wakefield Road). Follow the track down nextto some new houses at the bottom go through a gateway and follow the trackaround the perimeter of a garden, the track bends round to the left then goes overa small wooden bridge on your right. Follow the footpath to the left, this path soonjoins a bigger path keep walking straight ahead along next to the river. At the endof the path is a garage and another little bridge this one made of stone. Turn leftover this bridge and walk up the hill back onto Wakefield Road. Cross over theroad so you are walking on the side with the pavement and walk back intoKitchenroyd to the bus stop.

Walk 9: ScissettDuration: 45 mins.Start point: Public car park between the church and Scissett First School

Start in the car park between the church and Scissett First School. Walk ontoWakefield Road and turn left towards Clayton West. When you get to ScissettWorking Men’s Club cross over the road and next to the bus stop is a footpath sign,follow the footpath along and over the river. You will come out on Spring Grovewhich becomes Barnsley Road. Follow this road to the end then turn left back ontoWakefield Road towards Denby Dale. Follow Wakefield Road, passing all the shopson your left. Then cross over Wakefield Road and turn right onto Highbridge Lane.Walk up Highbridge Lane until you get to a footpath sign on the right, follow thisfootpath along next to the green metal fence. At the end of the path cross overBusker Lane to the pavement and turn right heading back down into Scissett. Turnleft along Wakefield Road and walk back to the car park.
