Product Licensing: Virtualized Desktops

• Commonly referred to as VDI
• Three main technologies:• VMWare View• Citrix XenDesktop• Microsoft App-V
• Each of these vendors approach the technology differently and require different licenses
• Should not be confused with Application Streaming• Different technology• Different Licensing Requirements
What is Virtualized Desktop Licensing?
7
• VDI – Virtual Windows Desktop Session (Windows 7, Windows 10, etc) on a server
• Application Streaming – Utilizes Remote Desktop Protocol to stream the application on a Windows Server
There are different license requirements for each of these
Difference Between Application Streaming and VDI

It’s out there – it’s likely in your environment already (and you may not know it)• IT is likely considering it• Vendors are pushing it as more cost effective• Potentially provides more control• Outsourcing/Off-shore is a common area of use
The costs of licensing can kill the value of VDI• Licensing costs need to be considered when looking at VDI as a solution• You potential loose control of portions of the environment (e.g. What devices are accessing) opening you up to
much more expensive license requirements (VDA)
Different Vendors Offer Different Solutions and Different License Costs• Licensing cost & compliance considerations could affect:
• Your choice of technology and your system design• Your license compliance and license purchase strategy
VDI Licensing Impacts your EA• Windows OS/VDA Rights• User Based Windows Desktops vs Device Based• Contractors/Offshore workers

What’s Important in a VDI Infrastructure as it relates to Licensing
1. Hypervisor• Host the VMs on a server
(typically VMWare on Xen Desktop)
2. Windows Server• Authentication, User Settings,
Etc.3. Windows Client OS’s
• OS’s that are running in the VM’s
4. Management / App Deployment Tools
• Provision VM’s, Monitor Servers, Etc.
• Deploy & Patch apps in VM’s such as Office

1. Hypervisor• Windows DataCenter and System Center
Licenses2. Windows Server
• Windows DataCenter Licenses• Windows DataCenter and System Center
Licenses• Windows RDS CALs• ECAL Components
3. Windows client OSs • Windows OS with SA• VDA Licenses• Windows E3/E5• Windows Users CALs• Office/O365 E3• Project/Visio
4. Management/App Deployment Tools

How it Works• Work PC is left on and the end user
remotes into their Work PC through a tablet/home PC or Kiosk
• All computing is done on the Work PC the accessing devices is like a monitor only displays the screen changes to the remote service
• Can only have 1 active connection at a time
Assumptions• Accessing a Windows Server for
AD
• Office Can be licenses per Device
• CALs licensed per user

• Windows Server CAL• Windows RDS CAL (potentially with Citrix)• Office License • Windows Enterprise with SA or VDA License
iPad
Assumptions• CALs Per-User• Windows Per-Device• Office Pro (Per-Device)
Notes• Access via corporate owned devices to VDI
is covered by Win. SA or VDA subscriptions
• If Office is in the VDI image, then each device would need an Office License (No SA) or the user would need an O365 license
• If Office is installed on the local device then Office device license is all that is required

Because I’ve been asked twice already this week….
You cannot host VDI on third party hardware if that hardware is shared with others.
