Making life easier for people with dementia in London Issue 3 – June 2016
Dementia Friendly London News
Dementia friendly London
In May, Londoners elected a new London
Mayor, Labour’s Sadiq Khan. Thanks to
you, 500 people emailed the new Mayor
immediately after his election asking him
to make dementia a priority for the city.
Our mission for the London elections is to
gain a commitment from the mayoral and
assembly candidates to make London
the first dementia friendly capital city in
the world. This year Transport and
making high streets in London dementia
friendly are our priorities. Can you help?
We are consulting with people with
dementia and their carers on what will
make life easier for them. If you know
people who should be part of this, please
email Hope Virgo for the discussion

Dementia Friendly Cricket
To kick off Dementia Awareness Week
(15th-21st May) 130 people with dementia
and friends, carers and families enjoyed a
sunny day of cricket at the Kia Oval,
courtesy of Surrey County Cricket club.
With refreshments, a quiet entrance and a
dementia friendly stand at the Vauxhall
end with stewards and volunteers who
were Dementia Friends provided, a
relaxed and enjoyable day was had by all,
although ticket-holders could sit anywhere.
But this was not just a one-off: this was
such a success that there will be more
dementia friendly cricket days
scheduled for this season.
Organisations, charities, businesses across Havering celebrated this year’s Dementia Awareness Week – with
education workshops being run for
professionals and residents, fundraisers to
help support people living with dementia
and their carers and information stands
popping up in local theatres and shopping
centres to help spread the word about
dementia.

Camden based organisations and people
affected by dementia, came together on
Thursday 19th May to explore the
possibility of creating a ‘Dementia
Friendly Camden’ for the 1,688 people
estimated to be living with the condition in
the borough.
Welcoming the assembled organisations
and stakeholders was Mayor Councillor
Nadia Shah. Presentations were followed
by interactive group sessions, the first of
which explored ideas around what a
‘Dementia Friendly Camden’ would like.
It was agreed that it was important to
transform attitudes to dementia and work
towards removing the stigma within
communities across Camden.
Delegates at Dementia Friendly Camden by the Lock
Hackney Picturehouse celebrated
Dementia Awareness Week with one of its
six-weekly dementia friendly screenings.
Launched in April at Hackney library,
Hackney DAA involved many people with
dementia and carers, featured Positive

Paul Hollywood is calling on everyone to
join in celebrating Alzheimer's Society's
first ever Cupcake Day on Thursday 16
June, in association with woman&home, a
day dedicated to raising funds to defeat
dementia with the small but mighty
cupcake.
Everyone is encouraged to bake, sell or
buy cupcakes at events up and down the
country. From organising a sale at a
school to hosting a get-together at the
weekend, it's easy to get involved. Every
cupcake sold will help Alzheimer's Society
find a cure for dementia, fund vital
services and campaign for the rights of
people with dementia. £60 would pay for a
dementia research-focused blood test,
£20 would pay for someone to attend an
Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Café for a
month.
Sign up for a free Cupcake Kit and discover how to bring your own unique style to the table. www.alzheimers.org.uk
Don't forget to share pictures of your creations using #CupcakeDay on Twitter and Instagram.
Richmond Dementia Action Alliance co-
organised a Dementia Friendly Arts and
Heritage networking event, in collaboration
with Royal Historic Palaces.
Representatives from local arts and
heritage organisations met together at
Hampton Court Palace to share
information and experiences around
supporting people living with dementia and
their carers to enjoy taking part in the
arts and engaging with history.
The event included a Dementia Friends
session run by Historic Royal Palaces.
Attendees included staff and volunteers
from Royal Botanic Gardens Kew,
Hampton Court Palace, Ham House
(National Trust) and local arts venues and
museums such as Orleans House
Gallery, Strawberry Hill House and the
Holly Lodge Centre. The next Richmond
Dementia Action Alliance meeting will be
hosted by Orleans House Gallery and this
will be a great opportunity for a variety of
other organisations in the borough to find
out what the arts and heritage sector are
doing to enable people living with
dementia and their carers to live well.

As well as a brilliant workshop on making
housing dementia friendly in April
organised by WFDAA, Waltham Forest
celebrated Dementia Awareness Week in
style with the roadshow bus, singing,
theatre and many information stalls across
the borough.
To join Waltham Forest DAA contact:
K&C DAA member the Victoria & Albert Museum pulled out the stops to celebrate Dementia Awareness Week with a workshop entitled: Inspired by the Arts in Dementia on Thursday 19th May. 65 attendees from a mix of professionals in the arts and health sectors, students, professional and at home carers alongside those with dementia and their supporters enjoyed workshops showing how to involve people with dementia: singing, dance, object-handling and appreciation of the galleries and gardening were offered. Finally attendees were asked to join in making London Dementia Friendly.
At the V&A: a dance workshop led by Rambert Dance Company got people moving using everyday movements (push the pram, grab a plate, shut the drawer) to describe, recall and execute a funny, moving dance together. Thanks to Rasheeda Nalumoso and team at the V&A for their hard work.
Kensington & Chelsea DAA also held an
awareness raising stall at Portobello
Market for Dementia Awareness Week
talking to residents, tourists and other
stall-holders about dementia. To join K&C

From info stalls to cinema screenings
and choirs to cricket matches we
showed what people with dementia,
their carers and all those who work
alongside them can achieve with the
interest, support and enthusiasm of our
local community. As well as all that we
managed to squeeze in a Motown Lunch
and Boogie, the launch of the
Southwark’s new Working Towards a
Dementia Friendly Community status
and numerous other events including
open days, high street blitzes, poetry
readings and Dementia Friends
sessions run in shopping centres,
theatres, gardens, voluntary organisations
and businesses up and down the borough.
