DEMENTIA EDUCATION AND SUPPORT WORKSHOPS FOR FAMILY CAREGIVERS

These workshops will educate and empower caregivers, and provide them with the neces-sary resources to turn to in the community for support.

Division of Geriatric Medicine

Dr. José A. Morais, Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at McGill University, and Dr. Serge Gauthier, Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Unit at the McGill University Research Centre for Studies in Aging, are working in collaboration with Alzheimer’s Care Consultant and Facilitator Claire Webster and with the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning to offer community workshops that aim to educate and support caregivers who are looking after a family member with Alzheimer’s disease or a dementia-related illness.

The workshops are taught by a dedicated group of health care professionals including a geriatrician or neurologist, an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, a former caregiver, and a representative from the Quebec Health and Social Services network.

WORKSHOP 102Target audience: Caregivers to an individual in mid-stage dementia seeking information on the cognitive impairments experienced in this stage of dementia, proven communication strategies for dealing with changing behaviours, and best practices in developing a personal support system. This workshop will:

> describe the cognitive impairments experienced in mid-stage dementia and their effects on the activities of daily living;

> develop a personal care plan that includes a support network, accounts for personal triggers and outlines a personal self-care strategy;

> simulate real-life scenarios to practice communication strategies for dealing with challenging behaviours and identify safety hazards.

WORKSHOP 101 Target audience: Caregivers to an individual in early stage dementia wanting to know what to expect, the treatments and psychosocial services available, and planning and organizing for the future. This workshop will:

> focus on the most important elements that caregivers need to know regarding dementia and its associated behavioural and psychological symptoms;

> help family members prepare themselves for the journey of caring for someone who has the disease, including best practices for ensuring their own well-being as caregivers;

> simulate a real-life scenario to educate caregivers on how to create a safe home environment.

ATELIERS DE FORMATION SUR LA DÉMENCE À L’INTENTION DES PROCHES AIDANTS

Cette formation vise à informer et à outiller les proches aidants, et à leur donner des ressources pour aller chercher le soutien nécessaire.

Division degériatrie

Le Dr José A. Morais, professeur agrégé et directeur de la Division de gériatrie de l’Université McGill, et le Dr Serge Gauthier, directeur de l’Unité de recherche sur la maladie d’Alzheimer au Centre de recherche pour les études sur le vieillissement de l’Université McGill, travaillent avec Claire Webster, conseillère spécialisée en soins pour l’Alzheimer, et avec le Centre de simulation et d’apprentissage interactif Steinberg pour proposer des ateliers d’information et de soutien aux proches aidants d’une personne atteinte de la maladie d’Alzheimer ou d’une autre forme de démence. Ces ateliers sont donnés par un groupe de professionnels de la santé dévoués, incluant un gériatre ou un neurologue, un ergothérapeute ou un physiothérapeute, une ancienne proche aidante et un représen-tant du réseau de la santé et des services sociaux du Québec.

ATELIER 102Public cible : proches aidants d’une personne au stade intermédiaire de démence qui souhaitent s’informer sur les troubles cognitifs à ce stade de la maladie, les stratégies de communication pour faire face à l’évolution des comportements et les façons de développer un système de soutien personnel. Cet atelier :

> décrit les troubles cognitifs vécus au stade intermédiaire de démence et leurs effets sur les activités de la vie quotidienne

> aide à élaborer un plan de soins personnels qui comprend un réseau de soutien, tient compte des déclencheurs personnels et définit une stratégie de soin de soi

> propose des scénarios de simulation permettant de mettre en pratique des stratégies de communication pour faire face aux comportements difficiles et identifier les risques pour la sécurité

À L’INTENTION DES PROCHES AIDANTS

ATELIER 101 Public cible : proches aidants d’une personne en phase précoce de démence qui veut savoir à quoi s’attendre, connaître les traitements et les services psychosociaux disponibles, et planifier et s’organiser pour l’avenir. Cet atelier :

> renseigne les proches aidants sur la maladie et ses symptômes psychologiques et comportementaux

> comporte un volet théorique pour aider les proches aidants à se préparer à prendre soin d’une personne atteinte de démence, mais aussi à prendre soin d’eux-mêmes

> comporte un volet de simulation pour enseigner les bonnes pratiques pour assurer la sécurité de la personne aidée à la maison
