More nightmarish storiesabout the level of emergen-cy care at Delta Hospitalare emerging from doctorswho work there.Part of an all-out pub-

lic campaign to bring thehospitals surgical programback to the level where itwas over decade ago, theDelta Hospital MedicalStaff Association this weekhighlighted the case of aTsawwassen single motherwilling to talk about whatshe experienced recently.Wanting her story told,

but not wanting her namemade public, the mothertold the Optimist shebrought her 17-year-old sonto Delta Hospitals ER lastThursday evening becausehe was complaining ofsevere pain. Tests reveledhe had an appendicitis andneeded to get into surgery, however, he had to be trans-ferred to Surrey MemorialHospital by ambulancebecause Delta Hospitalssurgical department, unlikeother hospitals in theregion, is closed in the eve-ning.The teen ended up wait-

ing seven hours in Surrey, and by the time he waswheeled in for surgery, hisappendix had burst, his

mother said. Frustratedwith the lack of answers, the angry mom wonderswhy a relatively straight-forward procedure couldnthave been performed morepromptly at her local hos-pital.I cannot believe it. It

would have been so goodfor my son whos sufferingnow. It shouldnt have hap-pened and he would havebeen fine. Seven hours isa long time. Its unaccept-able.She added Delta Hospital

is a good hospital, butshould be able to providea basic level of emergencyservice. In a letter to Health

Minister Terry Lake lastweek signed by more than30 doctors, several exam-

ples were cited of patientsbeing sent away for produc-es the doctors claim couldhave easily been performedin Delta. Those patients arenot getting timely care, thedoctors say.The doctors have been

describing the situation asa crisis and that the surgi-cal program is in immi-nent danger of implodingbecause operating roomsarent available for emer-gency surgeries 24 hours aday like at other hospitals. In Delta, operating rooms

close at 3 p.m., whichmeans those patients requir-ing urgent procedures thatshow up after hours or closeto closing time must betransferred. The doctors have also

    been collaborating with sev-

eral local residents, includ-ing former civic councillorDoug Massey, to set up acommunity advocacy groupfor the hospital.Familiar names and

faces are appearing onceagain to join the fight forour community hospital, this time in support of doc-tors and funding for its hos-pital surgery program, saidMassey.Community activist Inger

Kam is also taking part inthe effort, helping organizevolunteers and working onan advocacy campaign withMassey. When Dr. (Robert)

Shaw informed me of howbad the funding situation atthe hospital is I had no ideaand knew that somethingneeded to be done right

    away, said Kam.Noting residents are

offering to donate and joinonce a society is formed,Kam added, We love ourhospital here in Delta andwill hold our politiciansaccountable to this as wehave done in the past. The new group will be

called Friends of DeltaHospital. An official with Fraser

Health last week noted thehospital would continue toplay a key role in the deliv-ery of health care in theregion, although there areno plans to change the sur-gical program to all-day.Massey and Kam are

asking anyone interested intaking part to e-mail themat [email protected].

Campaign for better careDoctors keep up pressure on govt by highlighting inadequacy of hospitals surgical program

Optimist hosting pair of candidate forums on Twitter

Dr. Robert Shaw (left), Dr. Jean Segal, Dr. Jeff Hornstein and Dr. Navdeep Grewal are among the 31 physicians at Delta Hospital whoare sounding the alarm about the state of the facilitys surgical program.

  • As the dredging of theFraser River continues thisfall, Delta South MLAVicki Huntington called onthe province last week tocome up with a long-termplan for local waterways. The economic output

of the lower Fraser River isequivalent, in both tonnageand jobs, to Canadas St.Lawrence Seaway, she saidin the legislature last week. This economic engine isdependent on continued, safe navigation, and safenavigation is absolutelydependent on dredging.Until 1998, dredging of

all channels was a federalresponsibility. In 1999, theport authority took overdredging only the mainnavigational channel, whichresulted in silt buildingup in the many secondarychannels. The silt has wreaked

havoc on float homes andmade some of the channelsimpassable at low tide. The current work to clear

the silt from the second-ary channels is the result

of $10 million in one-timefunding from the province,Corporation of Delta, Cityof Richmond and PortMetro Vancouver. The funding was secured

after years of lobbyingby the Ladner SedimentGroup, a small, dedicatedgroup of residents. Work inthe river began in January. While the group is happy

to see the channels finallybeing cleared, there is aconcern that without a long-term plan and regular fund-ing the problem will return. It would be a catas-

trophe... to have them fillback up again, said John

Roscoe, chair of the LadnerSediment Group.Huntington took that

message to Victoria lastweek. She stressed that one-time funding is not enough, telling TransportationMinister Todd Stone that along-term plan is necessary. The value of the Fraser

River to B.C.s economydemands ongoing sedimentcontrol, she said.We dont want to be

in the same crisis positionin another 10 years whereour working harbours areleft high and dry and oureconomic productivity isplaced at risk.

In September, Roscoewrote to the B.C. StandingCommittee on Finance ask-ing for $750,000 in annualfunding to maintain thelocal channels. An engineering study has

indicated that an estimated48,000 cubic metres of siltwill settle in the secondarychannels every year, and theannual funding would beused to help clear the sedi-ment to ensure safe navi-gation and assist in floodcontrol. The group is also con-

tinuing its push for moreassistance from the federalgovernment.Earlier this year, Roscoe

said, the governmentrefused a request to waive$250,000 in dumping fees. And while Delta-RichmondEast MP Kerry-LynneFindlay has worked on theissue since being electedin 2011, Roscoe said thegroup feels the federal gov-ernment has turned a blindeye to the situation.Findlay said the federal

governments contributionto the project came throughPort Metro Vancouver andDFO.

Dredging began earlier this year thanks to $10 million in one-time funding, but theres no long-term plan to keep the second-ary channels clear.
