Ladner could become home toanother artificial turf field, but itwon’t be happening in the imme-diate future.

Delta council agreed Mondayto begin discussions with usergroups to examine the feasibilityof adding another synthetic turfplaying surface somewherein the community. Ladnercurrently has one suchfield at Holly Park, whileTsawwassen also has oneand North Delta has two.

Coun. Robert Campbell, who chairs Delta’s parks, recreation and culture com-mission, said it was a partic-ularly wet winter that sawLadner fields closed to playtwice as often as fields inthe other two communities. He also noted rehabilitating fieldswith new drainage works wouldbe cost prohibitive.

a contention echoed byCoun. Bruce McDonald, who noted that’s essentiallyhow all other recreationalprojects in Delta get off the

ground.CAO George Harvie

said Delta already has $7.5million in the bank thanksto municipal land being

impacted by the SouthFraser Perimeter Road, while another desirablecivic property in Tilburywill hit the market later thisyear.

“This would not affectthe taxpayers. There would

be no new taxes in Delta,”explained Harvie.

Sport user groups didn’thave to financially contrib-ute to the Holly Park fieldwhen it opened six yearsago, although a short-livedcoalition of user groups

originally planned to makea contribution.

A new fee has been intro-duced to groups using turffields in Delta, a cost thathas trickled down to play-ers.

Coun. Ian Paton said he’d

prefer seeing another artifi-cial turf field in Ladner butalso in Tsawwassen as well.

The Ladner turf fieldproposal is now in thehands of Delta’s parks, rec-reation and culture commis-sion to pursue.

Canuck fever is everywhere as theplayoffs continue and the team remainsjust one win away from taking the StanleyCup.

Studio West Dance in Ladner held itsyear-end recital over the weekend anda couple weeks ago owner and directorJyla Davis decided to choreograph thegrand finale number, which includes allthe students at the school, with a Canuckstheme.

Davis said the 10-minute number usedlots of “hockey” songs, like We WillRock You, the Hockey Night in Canadatheme song and the national anthem.

As well, some of the students dressedas referees, hockey players, the GreenMen, Don Cherry and Ron McLean.

“It was quite the production,” she said, adding she would normally take a monthto teach the dance to all 200 to 300 stu-dents at the school.

With Canuck fever running rampant inthe Lower Mainland, the dance school’sperformance has garnered media atten-tion, including coverage on both GlobalTV and CBC.

Delta police have iden-tified the body that wasfound in the water earlierthis month near the GeorgeMassey Tunnel as that of aNorth Delta man who wasreported missing in April.

Bhupinder Singh Rahelu,

41, was reported missingby his family at about 7:45p.m. on April 16. He waslast seen at 9:30 a.m. thatday at his family home inthe 8300-block of 118AStreet.

Early the next day, policefound Rahelu’s vehicle inthe 9200-block of RiverRoad. The van was unoccu-

pied but contained some ofhis personal belongings.

A/Sgt. Cal Traversy saidthe death does not appear tobe suspicious.

Ken Rosmus found thebody June 1 while out inhis boat with a friend onthe south arm of the FraserRiver. The pair pulled thebody onto the boat.

The Ladner post office was one of the targets of rotating strikes by unionized Canada Postemployees Tuesday. CUPW, representing 48,000 postal workers, has been staging 24-hour strikessince June 3. Contract negotiations had taken place for seven months prior without a resolution. The union is calling the current situation a “partial lockout” because its members’ hours werebeing cut. Canada Post says it has lost $70 million since the strike began.

Delta police called inthe bomb squad yesterdaymorning after a suspiciouspackage was found by the

pedestrian bridge on ArthurDrive in Ladner.

Officers closed the roadto all traffic while waitingfor the RCMP explosivedevice unit to arrive andinvestigate the package.

Officers from the unitused a charge to detonatethe package and could beseen sifting through whatwas left shortly after noon.

Work on rebuilding theLittle House in Tsawwassenstarted over the weekend.

It began at a ceremo-nial groundbreaking Fridayafternoon and by Saturdaywork on the foundationbegan in earnest.

Originally a family home, the little white house on12th Avenue was purchasedby the Corporation of Deltain 1979 where it served as ahome for programs offeredby Delta Mental Healthand Richmond Alcohol andDrug Action Team.

In May 1982, it wasmade available for 12-stepmeetings and in 2004 TheLittle House Society wasestablished to oversee thefacility.

In 2009, the house wasdestroyed by fire andlate last year the societylaunched a fundraisingcampaign to rebuild it.

“You have changed manypeople’s lives by helpingthem deal with their addic-tions,” Mayor Lois Jacksonsaid at the groundbreaking.

Aside from rebuildingthe house, the society isaiming at expanding its ser-vices. Community educa-tion about alcohol and drugabuse and addiction is a keypart of the society’s goalsand something it hopes tofacilitate through the newhouse.

The 1,800-square-footfacility will also be avail-able to the community for

use as a multi-purposespace.

“This facility that will beon this property is availableto any group in the commu-nity,” Little House Societypresident Jim Stimson saidFriday. “That’s the kind ofcommitment that this boardis making to this commu-nity.”

The society’s aim is tohelp everyone affected byan addiction, not just theaddict.

“It takes down not onlythe person with the illnessbut the family,” Stimsonsaid.

One local woman attestedto that as she spoke tothe crowd about her son’saddiction, the toll it’s takenon her family and the dif-ficult road to recovery.

“There were times whenabsolute despair took over,”she said.

Stimson helped her sonfind his way to treatment, and she has found sup-port through the Heart of aMother workshops offeredby the Little House Societyearlier this year.

The society’s fundraisingwork is not over. With morethan $180,000 in in-kinddonations of materials orlabour and more in cash, there is still money left tobe raised.

For more information, orto make a donation, call JimStimson at 778-887-1828.

Donations can also bemade through Delta’s parks, recreation and culturedepartment.

Delta South MLA VickiHuntington will be set-ting up her office at theKinVillage RecreationCentre in Tsawwassen onWednesday, June 22.

In an attempt to be moreaccessible to all of herconstituents, Huntington isrelocating her office to theseniors centre for the day.

“There are no doubtmany people who mayhave trouble coming to myLadner office, so I thoughtit would be convenient forsome if I came to them,”

says Huntington.The Tsawwassen “office”

will be open from 10 a.m.to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.People are invited to drop inand have a private discus-sion with Huntington or, ifthey prefer a specific time, they can call 604-940-7924for an appointment.

“I believe this is reallyimportant and plan tocontinue the Tsawwassen‘office’ on a regular basis,”said Huntington.

KinVillage is at 5430-10th Ave.

It’s a common problemfor many and a local podia-trist now has a new toolin the fight against toenailfungus.

Dr. Thomas Troyintroduced the PinPointeFootLaser to hisTsawwassen practice at theend of March after it wascleared by Health Canadaearlier this year.

The laser is a fast, effec-tive and drug-free way todeal with toenail fungus, hesaid.

Toenail fungus is a com-mon problem. Troy saidabout 10 per cent of thepopulation has it, a rate thatincreases to 30 per cent atthe age of 50.

Keeping toenail fungusat bay is both an issue ofaesthetics — it causes thenail to become thick anddiscoloured — and keepinga communicable diseasefrom spreading.

A fungal infection canlead to more serious health

issues for patientswith diabetes orimmune disorders.

Aside from theaesthetics, a fungalinfection can bedisfiguring andpainful.

Until the adventof the laser, toenailfungal infectionswere usually treatedwith medication ortopical ointments.

The laser worksby penetrating thenail, without caus-ing further damageto the nail or thesurrounding skin. The heat of thelaser kills the fun-gus.

Troy, who hasbeen practicing inthe area since 1987,said all 10 nailsmust be treated atonce.

The nail won’t clear upimmediately. It will clearslowly as the infected, dam-aged nail grows out and isreplaced by new, healthygrowth.

For some, treatment will

mean the end of toenailfungus but, as with anytreatment, for some the fun-gus could return.

For more informa-tion about the PinPointeFootLaser, call Dr. ThomasTroy at 604-943-0188 orvisit www.drtomtroy.com.

Pity thosenot yet inmarket

TEDMURPHY

MURPHY’SLAW

When you look at young people today,it’s hard to feel too sorry for them, whatwith their flat stomachs, full heads ofhair and effortless grasp of technology. They’ve got it so good they’re probablyunder the impression Vancouver hasalways had a fantastic hockey team.

However, life is not all roses for theseyoung folks. In fact, when it comes toreal estate, there is ample reason forolder generations to pity them. An emailthat came my way earlier this monthfrom the Real Estate Board of GreaterVancouver paints a rather distressingpicture if you’re a first-timer looking tobreak into the market.

According to the board’s statistics forMay, the typical South Delta home hasincreased in value by 138.4 per cent overthe last 10 years to where it now sits at$727,723. Townhouses are up 185.6 percent during that time, and now averagea tidy $478,206, while apartments haverisen by 132.4 per cent to a not so insig-nificant $369,350.

These numbers are fantastic news forhomeowners able to sit back and watchtheir equity grow, but they’re horrifyingfor young people not yet in the market. And every upward bump of these pricesmakes home ownership more and moreelusive.

The absolute cheapest home in theseparts is in the half-million-dollar range, which equates to a mortgage paymentpushing $3,000 a month. If you dareto dream about an average home, yourmonthly payment rises to the $4,000range, which doesn’t include propertytaxes, utilities and all the other costsassociated with a household.

How many young people have after-tax incomes capable of handling thosepayments? Forget young people, howmany people period could afford them?

I realize it’s the reality of living in theshadow of a big, desirable city, but it’s ashame that real estate prices have alterednot only our quality of life and communi-ties, but our dreams as well.

It wasn’t that long ago that buyinga house was within the grasp of mostpeople. Families moved to Delta to finda nice house on a nice lot in a pleasant, safe neighbourhood. Those homes andneighbourhoods still exist, but unfortu-nately they’re now out of reach of a greatmany, particularly the young familiesthey were originally built to accommo-date.

According to a BMO housing report, the average priced home in Vancouveris now 11.2 times family income, morethan double the ratio of a decade ago. It’sgreat if you’re already in the game, but Ipity the young folks who aren’t.

Life can be very weird some-times.

As I write this, it’s Thursday,June 9 and I’m sitting in a hotelroom in Southern California hav-ing just had a day of meetings withvarious Hollywood people. By thetime this is published, I’ll be home, and darn grateful for it.

I drove down here, somethingI’ve done on numerous occasions, but usually with more breaks alongthe way. While the distances canbe grueling, it’s a nice drive. Iparticularly like the Shasta area innorthern California, and alwaysgive a wave to the velvety aliensthat live inside Mount Shasta whenI pass by.

Tomorrow, I’ll start the journeyhome, with a stop in Monterey tounwind for a couple of days. For

those planning a drive throughCalifornia, I strongly suggest avisit to Monterey. When you’rethere, take a drive around the bayto Phil’s Fish Market in MossLanding ... best cioppino you’llever taste.

Back to the purpose of my trip:Last year on a whim I entered ascreenplay in a contest FrancisFord Coppola holds annually. Muchto my surprise, when the resultswere announced in February, myscreenplay had placed in the top10. Since then my life has taken aturn for the, well, weird.

I had been told to expect callsfrom agents and producers. Iassumed this meant that maybesome small independent outfitmight like my script, would wantto toss me a couple of bucks, thenhave a real writer re-do it. Again,to my surprise, the opposite hap-pened, and I was instead calledupon by some prominent peoplein the industry to produce morescreenplays, with bigger budgetsand thus greater value. Since thenI’ve completely re-written anotherscript I did last year, and writtentwo others as well.

So, here I am in Hollywood with

people whom I can’t believe arewilling to even give me the timeof day, and listening to them talkabout “my career.” Like I said, lifecan be weird sometimes.

Still, nothing may come ofall this. In fact, I keep expectingsomeone to shout, “April fools,” orsay, “Oops, we got you mixed upwith somebody else.” Nevertheless,it’s been an interesting experience, and I’ve learned a lot. Mainly, thatHollywood people are much nicerthan we’ve all been led to believe.

So, why am I telling you all this?Well, all too often people are afraidto go out on a limb and take chanc-es, or try new things. Our societymakes it too easy for people tosuccumb to their fears or adversity.I wrote recently that anyone cansucceed if they only work hardand recognize opportunities whenthey appear. Strangely, those wordsactually angered some people.

I guess some people believe thatwhen the odds are stacked againstyou, your only option is to throw inthe towel.

Ignore these naysayers. No mat-ter what your circumstances, youcan beat the odds.

Just give it a try.

Is there Hollywood ending toaspiring screenwriter’s tale?

Letters to the Editor

Editor:With all the negativity

being expressed about poli-ticians these days, I wouldlike to relate a very posi-tive experience I recentlyhad with our MLA, VickiHuntington.

I work for a fledglingB.C. company that hasdeveloped a technologyto improve the stability ofcertain configurations ofheavy trucks and trailers. In seeking approval for theon-road use of this technol-

ogy, we were experiencingsome difficulty navigatingthrough the bureaucracy inVictoria that regulates suchthings.

Understanding herconcerns regarding heavytruck safety in South Delta,we approached Huntingtonfor some advice and helpwith our issue. Over thecourse of two months, sheproved to be very gener-ous with her time for us;there were two meetingseach lasting more than an

hour and at no time did wesense a lack of interest inour plight.

Within a short time ofthe second meeting, thebureaucracy responded toour issue and has sinceapproved our technologyfor use on B.C. roadways.

Despite being an inde-pendent, Huntington hasproved to be effective inserving her constituentswhile helping to improvehighway safety.

Editor:I recently had the plea-

sure of entertaining myout-of-town five-year-oldgrandson for the afternoon.

He shows a lot of interestin birds, so I decided to takehim to visit the OrphanedWildlife RehabilitationSociety’s centre in Ladner.I have lived in Tsawwassenfor 30 years, and althoughvery aware of the goodwork OWL does, had nevertaken the time to go there.

What a wonderful after-

noon we had. We wereescorted around by a verywell informed volunteerwho explained in detailwhat type of bird was ineach cage, why they wereat the centre, what they ate, etc.

The hospital is out ofbounds, but I learned thatso far this year 153 raptorshave been brought to thecentre in need of care and

attention.On our departure, we

viewed a very large per-egrine falcon in the office, were able to sponsor anowl and, of course, buy aT-shirt.

I encourage grandpar-ents to do as I did. It wasa pleasant, relaxing outingand my grandson still talksabout what he saw.

At one time, it seems tome, coaches were peopleyou found only on ice rinksand on baseball fields andin lacrosse boxes.

Not so any more. Todaythere are “coaches” of everydescription. Need a careercoach? They’re in abun-dance. A life coach? Them, too.

Need a colour consul-tant? They’re everywhere, apparently, and more thanwilling to help homeownersbreak out from that beige, little world.

There are, I have discov-ered, even “organizing pro-fessionals” — or coaches, for want of a better word. They’re the people who willcome to your home, tell youwhat clothes you shouldturf, what you should keepand what items you shouldplace in those handy-dandystacking wicker baskets. And then hand you a bill.

Recently, I have learnedthere are also people calledgardening coaches.

I am not entirely surewhat they do, but I suspectthey come to your home, advise you what flowersto plant and then politelyadvise you to water themmore than once a season.Brilliant, I say.

This is all, well, newsto me. I have never had acoach, but I am pretty sureI’d like one — or perhapsthree or four.

If I had my druthers— and enough money— I think I’d go for the lifecoach. That, I am guessing, would be the individualwho pretty much covers allthe bases.

A life coach, I assume, would come into my privatespace and do a massiveoverhaul. He or she wouldprobably have my happi-ness uppermost in mind, and tackle all of life’s greatquestions. Should I be avegetarian, instead of alover of ribs? A student ofChinese philosophy, per-haps? A quilter or a pokerqueen?

The life coach, I expect,

would also cover thesmaller things. He or shewould determine whether Iam spending too much onmy laundry detergent andwhether my shoes are sen-sible enough and whetherI ought to wear more plumand less yellow.

I do not know howpeople become life coaches,or coaches of any kind, butI imagine the training mustbe intensive.

I am betting an organiz-ing coach, for instance, probably goes to schoolfor a good four or fiveyears and takes a rigorouscourse load. One subject,I am betting: The ABCsof the Underwear Drawer.Another? No-brainer. Thatwould be: Bookshelves— Getting the Spines inOrder.

At the moment, alas, Iam afraid I am spending toomuch on ribs and laundrydetergent and yellow cloth-ing to be able to afford acoach of any kind.

I envy people who can,however.

The underwear drawer, let’s face it, is something inneed of a pro.

Today’s coaches aren’tlimited to the sidelines

“Getting out of the cul-de-sac” to help providevital, fair income to peoplein developing countries isbringing Fair Trade TenThousand Villages “intothe cul-de-sac” of St.David’s Anglican Church onSaturday.

Bob Peters, chairman ofthe Father’s Day weekendfundraiser, members of lastyear’s craft fair commit-tee and Olga Nickel of TenThousand Villages havebeen working together on aglobal-themed fair that willfeature handcrafted prod-ucts from around the world.

The parish-sponsoredsale offers the communityan opportunity to invest inthat world and shop fairtrade with a non-profitorganization linked with aprogram of the MennoniteCentral Committee (a relief, service and peace agency).

Fair trade changes livesand for many visitors onJune 18, that begins with acup of Fair Trade Coffee atSt. David’s Kitchen Cafe.Home-baked bread, frozenfruit pies, as well as bananaand other fruit loaves, willbe offered for sale by St.David’s bakers, as well aslight refreshments for that

morning cup of coffee.At lunchtime,

Mennonite-sausages-in-a-bun will tempt shoppersto rest from “travelling”through Africa, Asia, LatinAmerica and the MiddleEast in search of uniqueand interesting productsfrom more than 100 artisansin more than 35 countries.

Fair trade represents apartnership based on dia-logue, transparency andrespect, which seeks greaterequity in international trade.

It contributes to sustainabledevelopment by offeringbetter trading conditionsto, and securing the rightsof, marginalized producersand workers in developingcountries.

It is based on the prin-ciple that trade should havea conscience and provesthat greater justice in worldtrade is possible. It high-lights the need for changein the rules and practiceof conventional trade andshows how a successful

business can also put peo-ple before profit.

Fair trade encouragesNorth American consum-ers to appreciate artisans’cultural heritage and lifecircumstances with joy andrespect.

In addition to handcraftedgifts from around the world, local craftsman Bob Petersof Old Goat’s Workshophas interesting Father’s Dayitems for young shopperswith pocket money to spendon their dads.

Alex is almost two and is fas-cinated by everything his dad,Doug Schultz, does. Whetherit’s watching a hockey game, pulling weeds, sleeping on thecouch or playing outside, Alexwatches closely. The photoshows Alex still strugglingto talk and his actions andgrunts are just so apparent ashe attempts to figure out whatdad is doing on the groundand how he can help.

Dany Loyer says growing up with her dad, Ron Martens, was as challenging as it was rewarding. He was, and still is, very active and outdoorsy. Dany and her sister had the privilege of hiking theWest Coast Trail, camping under the stars, canoeing and backpacking, all before entering juniorhigh. When she was younger, Dany was sure her dad had wanted boys. She figured that could bethe only reason he had her chopping firewood and digging holes in the yard. It wasn’t until shewas much older she realized what she once thought to be a punishment was actually what madeher into the strong — physically, mentally and emotionally — woman she is today.

Josh and Ali Clayton love these photos of their dad as it reminds them of many good memories. They loved spending time with him and it did not matter what they did as long as it was together. He passed away in February of 2008 and they miss him a lot.

This photo is of Nathan and his dad, Stephen Norcross, hanging out in the pumpkin patch. Theylooked all over for the perfect pumpkin before finding it. They got really mucky that day and hadto wash off with the hose when they got home. Dad helped Nathan carve the pumpkin and thenthey roasted the pumpkin seeds for a snack.

Feedback

British Columbians will soon be receiving ballots in the mail for theprovince-wide referendum on the harmonized sales tax. FinanceMinister Kevin Falcon previously announced that if B.C.ers vote to

keep the HST, the rate would be cut from 12 to 10 per cent by 2014.The HST took effect last year. The Optimist asked:

What do you think of a 10 per cent HST?

Behind every work zone cone is a worker in a vulnerableposition. Each cone stands for someone’s father, mother, son, or daughter. That’s why it’s important to know thatthousands of people working by the roadside in B.C. arecounting on you to slow down and drive with care whenapproaching a “cone zone.“
