The proposed project includes up to 146 natural gas wells, four water disposal wells and the construction of associated access roads and pipelines for leases operated by SG Interests I, Ltd. Pledge fulfilledThe Delta County Board of County

Commissioners got off on the right foot during introductions to the new director of Delta Housing Authori-ty. On Monday, Ute Jantz met the commissioners for the first time and accepted a $25,000 check, the second installment on the commissioners’ $35,000 pledge to help with Phase II of Villas at the Bluff. Another $10,000 was given last year.

The affordable workplace housing complex at 15th and Bluff in Delta will be ready for occupancy this spring.

The Delta County Commu-nications Center was recently upgraded with the latest tech-nology for responding to 9-1-1 calls.

The all-new system is delivered via CenturyLink’s voiceover IP service, and was funded in part by a DOLA grant of $150,000.

The county’s share, anoth-er $150,000, was covered by a monthly surcharge on land lines and cell phones that goes into a 9-1-1 enterprise fund administered by the Delta County Commissioners. The arrangement, says Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee, is effective and efficient. “We are able to provide excep-tional service for emergency response for a very reasonable cost to the county,” he said.

The surcharge also off-sets some salaries and funds replacements of radios and other communication equip-ment.

Currently, the county is seeking PUC approval to increase the surcharge to $1, a monthly fee that’s below the state average but would help Delta County keep pace with the ever-changing world of public safety communica-tions. The next upgrade will enable dispatch to receive and

respond to text messages from smartphones.

The countywide dispatch center employs 10 dispatch-ers plus communications supervisor Connie Johnson. They work around the clock, answering calls and dispatch-ing emergency responders — police, fire and ambulance — countywide.

One of the biggest advan-tages to the new system, Johnson said, is the ability to more accurately pinpoint calls originating from cell phones.

Equally beneficial is the ability to transfer calls to neighboring call centers with a touch of a button. When an accident occurs, for exam-ple, people aren’t always sure which county they’re in. Previously, dispatchers took down the information and relayed it to the appropriate agency. With additional train-ing, Next Generation technol-ogy will also allow dispatch centers to help out each other as needed, which could ulti-mately affect staffing levels.

The dispatch center fea-tures four console positions, each of which contains six computer screens assigned to different functions, from mapping to audio recording to searching criminal/DMV data-bases. With a quick glance, dispatchers can see which

emergency responders are on duty and whether they’re available.

The system is fully inte-grated with Spillman Tech-nologies, a countywide data sharing program intended to simplify information manage-ment and improve communi-cation among all law enforce-ment agencies.

Each of the consoles can be raised or lowered, so dispatch-ers can break up their 10-hour shifts by standing. If staffing levels and call volumes per-mit, they can leave the office for a few minutes to stretch their legs, but they never go far. Meals are normally eaten at their desks.

ing, and responding to high-ly-charged situations can be stressful, but the job can also be very rewarding. “There are not many jobs you can go to and make a difference every day,” Johnson said.

The fifth annual Soil Health Conference ended last Friday on a challenge to Delta County ag producers — when they think about Delta Coun-ty agriculture, try and think in terms of “all agriculture.”

The call came during the final panel discussion on Sat-urday afternoon. Panelist Robbie LeValley of Hotchkiss told conference attendees, “There is a great divide in Delta County agriculture. We need to think in terms of all agriculture.”

The challenges and oppor-tunities for local agriculture discussed during the soil health conference are the same for all county producers, she said.

LeValley cited an example that will sound familiar to a lot of local people. Some local ag producers’ insular think-ing can lead to thinking that another type of operator else-where in the county is “evil” for farming a different way.

The types of soil health farming practices presented and discussed at the Soil Health Conference in Delta should not be thought of as creating yet another “type of farming” here. Thinking in terms of “all agriculture” is the key to success.

The conference’s final speaker, Karl Kupers, pointed out another developing oppor-tunity that could benefit many

of the county’s ag produc-ers. He discussed marketing issues for sustainable agricul-ture practices and the prod-ucts they produce. Consumers are becoming more interested in where their food comes from and what’s in it, and this creates an opportunity for producers, he explained.

He said, “Society has come back around to appreciating agriculture. People want to know you (producers) and interact with you.”

The keynote presenter who opened the conference on Fri-day morning, George Whitten of Sagauche, told 160 regis-tered attendees, “There is a shift in farming to soil health and more holistic ways, away from technological solutions. “Good ranch management is in the soil.”

He explained how he uses common sense practices in his “holistic rotational grazing” to save money on input costs and maintain yield and profit-ability.

Another conference pre-senter, a particularly enter-taining one from North Dako-ta, explained the beneficial and necessary aspects of something that many farmers see as the bane of their opera-tions — insects.

However, by maintaining an adequate resource and diver-sity of “predatory insects,” or “bugs that eat other bugs,” profitable yields with fewer costly inputs of insecticide can

be achieved, explained Jona-than Lundgren, entomologist.

Lundgren is a real fan of insects in a properly biodi-verse landscape. He pointed out the critical need for bio-diversity in the production of food: “If we don’t have it then we’re screwed as a species,” he said.

of insects generally and of the good things they do for humans. “Think of lobster or crab legs. They’re just big bugs, folks,” he noted.

Other speakers were Kris Nichols on soil microbiology, and Keith Burns and Steve Woodis talking about cover crops.

Producers urged to take ‘all ag’ view

Delta County is at the cen-ter of agricultural issues that are drawing the attention of ag interests at the state level.

Don Shawcroft, president of the Colorado Farm Bureau and a board member of the Mountain States Legal Foun-dation, was in Delta last Sat-urday for a rally supporting the “right to farm” and Colo-rado’s Right to Farm Law.

Shawcroft and CFB’s state vice president, Carlyle Cur-rier of Collbran, attended a right-to-farm rally held at the Delta Sales Yard. The event was also a fundraiser for Hotchkiss ag producer Edwin Hostetler who is embroiled with legal challenges to his poultry operation.

Several dozen people

turned out for the rally and heard Currier share how water issues across the state are also having an impact on the right to farm.

Having attended a recent meeting of the Colorado Water Congress, Currier said keeping lands in production agriculture is becoming more difficult as ag water rights are coveted by thirsty cities.

“They (cities) say they want to keep people in ag, then they make it as difficult as they possibly can,” Currier said.

“We all need to talk to our city cousins and educate them about what it takes to stay in agriculture,” Currier said.

“Any attack on agriculture (lifestyle) is an attack on all of us. We appreciate everyone who is here. You are fighting

for all of agriculture,” he said, adding, “We need to stand up. We thank Delta County for those of you who are here doing it.”

Shawcroft explained the Mountain States Legal Foun-dation is a non-profit orga-nization that involves itself in precedent-setting court cases. Those cases involve the right to farm, private prop-erty rights issues and various regulatory matters.

The foundation has filed a “friend of the court” brief on behalf of Hostetler.

Noting that the right-to-farm issue being contested in Hostetler’s case has been going on since 2011, Shaw-croft said, “When something like this happens the next time, we need to get in the fight earlier.”

In 2008 SG Interests asked for permits to drill the area known as the Bull Mt. Unit, covering nearly 20,000 acres of private and public minerals on both sides of Hwy. 133. The southern boundary of the unit is just 3 miles from the Paonia Reservoir.

While this unit is in Gun-nison County, this area is in the water and air sheds of the North Fork Valley. The BLM’s original analysis of this area declared Findings of No Significant Impact (FONSI). When that was contested, they agreed in 2013 to do an Environmen-tal Impact Statement (EIS) regarding 146 gas wells plus four “disposal” injec-tion wells, roads, pipes, etc.

The EIS was just released on Jan. 16. It is 760 pages and the public had been given 45 days to comment. Citizens for a Healthy Community asked

for an extension which the BLM granted, so comments are now due April 16.

A lot has changed since 2008 when the science on fracking was rudimenta-ry. That is no longer the case. For instance, in the fall of 2011, when New York’s State Department of Environmental Conser-vation released its revised draft of the supplemental generic EIS, there were 60 peer-reviewed studies. By 2014, the New York State Department of Pub-lic Health had 400 studies that led them to ban frack-ing in New York.

To quote a member of the group Concerned Health Professionals of New York, “Four independent teams of public health scientists looked at the data and came to the same conclusions: Fracking carries known and unknown risks of harm for public health and the environment upon which

that health depends.” Our own Theo Colborn

has shown the effects on fetuses of VERY minute amounts of some of the tox-ins used and released by the oil and gas industry. With the realities of tox-ins escaping into air and water, spills, injection wells having caused earthquakes in several states, and the fact that new and old wells leak, I believe we need to question whether this land, located a few miles from the Paonia Reservoir should ever have been leased to be drilled and fracked in the first place.

Please follow this project closely, attend the Feb. 10 public meeting in Paonia hosted by the BLM and make sure your concerns are heard. This is our air, our water, our land, and our future.

More people need to learn to think for themselvesDear Editor:

What Mike Mason writes about demon-strates that he and his wife are two of the very few people in this coun-try who have the ability to think for themselves and have some aware-ness of what legitimate government is. Reference

Mike Mason’s letter in the Dec. 31, 2014, DCI, in which he made reference to a national retail sales tax of 17.6 percent. This is disgusting. Getting rid of the damned IRS and income tax (which the U.S. Supreme Court found unconstitutional in 1895 in Pollock Vs. Farm-ers) is a very good thing, however the absolute maximum for a national sales tax should be 10 percent. That is more than enough for legiti-mate government. Mike’s letter had good inten-tions, but did not address the corrupt scum, politi-cians and banksters that created the private com-pany known as the Fed-eral Reserve Bank and the income tax, which were created to control the people by controlling their purchasing power. For a little beginning education on the subject, a person can read the book “The Creature from Jekyll Island” by Edward

Lengthy appeal process was worth the effortDear Editor:

Here it is property tax assessment time once again. According to our findings, the tax assess-ment is relative to the assessed property value which is determined in the assessor’s office. In the year 2013 a neigh-boring landowner (Den-nis McCary) and I had the opportunity to visit with the county asses-sor Debbie Griffith about the increased assessment of some of the property that we own. Her posi-tion in our conversation was that because of the mass appraisal guide-lines and that because agricultural commodities were at an all-time high, the increased valuation of our acreage was cor-rect. Debbie suggested that we use the appeal process.

My farming practice is individualized to my techniques. I farm with no chemicals, no GMO crops, and no commer-cially enhanced soils.

Therefore we opted to pursue the appeal process. This was an eye opener! First we filled out the appeal form, which was presented to the County Board of Equalization. This County Board of Equalization actually hired an appraiser from Grand Junction to be the hearing officer/referee who then made his recom-mendations to the Delta County Board of Equal-ization. The Delta County BOE at the recommenda-tion of the officer/referee denied our appeal, and it was signed by Chairman Atchley of the Board of County Commissioners.

At this point we had one of three options as out-lined by Colorado State Statute. Therefore, we chose to proceed to Dis-trict Court which includ-ed filing fees that we had to pay. The District Court judge referred our case to mediation, which includ-ed more fees that we had to pay. We did not agree with the arbitrary out-come of this mediation. This matter was then set to appear before Judge Greenacre. In this court setting we presented our findings as did the county attorney on behalf of the assessor’s office. Judge Greenacre entertained our arguments for sev-eral hours, deliberated, and returned his rul-

ing. This entire process resulted in a reduction of our tax assessments and clarified the agricultural land classifications of our properties.

Through the steps and the time it took, I spent more than the amount of the increase of my prop-erty tax, yet the principle was worth the effort. “To preserve our indepen-dence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt… I am for a government rigor-ously frugal and simple,” is a quote from Thomas Jefferson which has as much relevance today as when spoken. God bless America.

Oil/gas task force is facing a difficult taskDear Editor:

In 2008, my husband and I moved to the North Fork Valley near Paonia. We chose this area based on two of my passions — bowhunting for elk and gardening. The North Fork is one of the few rural places in Colorado where I can have both at home or minutes away.

In 2011, a rheumatol-ogist diagnosed me with an autoimmune disorder, polymyalgia rheumatic or PMR. This disease attacks and inflames the joint tissues of hips and shoulders. Thank-fully, I am symptom-free now. In late Octo-ber 2012, a neurologist found that my headaches were chronic migraines. Avoiding migraine trig-gers has restricted my eating choices, even for healthy foods such as beans, cheese and nuts.

These challenges were an eye-opening experi-ence in making me real-ize how one health issue can cascade into a life catastrophe. When I con-tracted PMR, I was a self-employed freelance writer. While wait-ing for diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the disease destroyed my ability to drive or sit for more than min-utes at a time or walk more than 1⁄4 of a mile let alone work. Without my husband’s support and health insurance, I would’ve been home-less. To put it in broader financial terms, I earned no money, paid no taxes and neither could I vol-unteer any services. Due to these experiences, I believe it is of the upmost importance to protect the health and environ-ment of the citizens of Colorado.

When I attended the Governor’s Oil & Gas Task Force meeting in Rifle, a Garfield County rancher, Carrie Couey spoke. She said she had had drilling companies on her ranch for sever-al years with no prob-lems. My experience dif-fers. In the summer of 2010, I accompanied my husband and a Natural Resources Conservation Service employee to a produced water evapo-ration site near Vernal,

Utah. Within a couple of minutes, I was sick to my stomach, unsteady on my feet and contin-ued to suffer nausea for approximately three hours after we left the site. Just as some of us get hay fever and some of us don’t (I don’t), I am apparently sensitive to whatever air pollut-ants were present. This experience demonstrates to me the need to iden-tify a setback distance where all people are safe from air pollution. We need more independent air sampling research to identify emission levels from mega-industrial multi-well oil and gas operations in order to protect public health.

Colorado can learn from Wyoming’s mis-takes. When Wyo-ming and federal land management agencies required relatively paltry amounts for bonds, tax payers were left holding the bag to the tune of over $500,000 to clean

up only 5 of 105 wells drilled by a now bank-rupt company. (See High Country News, Jan. 1, 2014) The company also still owes nearly $1 mil-lion in state and federal taxes and fines. With the low price of oil and natu-ral gas, companies may be particularly vulner-able to declaring bank-ruptcy. Colorado, private landowners and the U.S. government may not receive tax money, royal-ties or payment of fines. The task force should recommend high bonds for oil and gas compa-nies to cover reclamation expenses when compa-nies fail to pay taxes, fines and reclamation costs or companies go bankrupt.

When drilling opera-tions move close to com-munities, the noise, odors, lighting and traf-fic of an industrial opera-tion impact families on a personal level. Transpar-ency is a crucial part to a drilling company’s social

license to operate close to communities. Until a Texas case last year, the industry could claim no documented case of water contamination by their operations. Landowners who could no longer live or make a living on their land have no choice but to sign settlements that muzzle them with gag orders. They can reveal to no one the details of health or environmental consequences. The task force should recommend outlawing gag orders in oil and gas lawsuit set-tlements.

To say that the Col-orado Oil & Gas Task Force has a difficult job before them in making recommendations to the legislature is an under-statement. I commend them for their service and hope they find the wisdom to help solve the contentious issues around oil and gas devel-opment.

As they were climb-ing through some brush, the 14-year-old’s rifle acci-dentally discharged into his lower right leg. The injury was not life threat-ening.Feb. 2:

A report was received of a car on its top on Back River Road between Hotchkiss and 3275 Road. A tire was found in the middle of the road. The driver was not in the vicinity. The investigation is ongoing.

A Kidz Clinic is the perfect choiceDear Editor:

I would like to share my experience with A Kidz Clinic with all of your read-ers in Delta County with young children. I needed a last-minute appoint-ment for my 15-year-old son, who had pink eye. He wrestles and was not able to wrestle or prac-tice until he was treated. He became symptomatic Friday afternoon, so I had few choices for treatment. The clinics in Hotchkiss and Paonia were booked and I thought about the new school-affiliated clin-ic in Delta. I called them around 2:30 p.m. and not only were they happy to see my son, they actu-ally stayed open in order to allow us time to drive from Paonia.

The service there

was perfect. Everyone was friendly, the rooms were immaculate, and the entire appointment was much quicker than most waiting room stays. The nurse practitioner was just lovely. She even called the pharmacy and researched which eye drops were the cheap-est before she prescribed anything.

I love community-based clinics. My family had access to the same type of clinic in Colorado Springs. It was for city/county employees and was operated in much the same way. This will be my first choice for my son’s medical care from here on.

A new non-profit cor-poration called the Arts Coalition of Delta Coun-ty, or AC/DC for short, has been formed.

After meeting for much of 2014, a board of direc-tors was formally sworn into office Jan. 12.

Board president Rich-ard Weldon says AC/DC has an ambitious goal in mind — building the largest performing arts auditorium in western Colorado.

“Through the AC/

DC auditorium we will bring in outside visitors and vacationers from all over Colorado as well as Utah and beyond to enjoy art, concerts, dance and theater events that we would normally have to travel hundreds of miles to see,” Weldon said.

AC/DC’s first goal is to raise funds through foun-dation and government grants. Construction of the auditorium will bring lots of construction jobs to the county, then when

created will create 30-40 full- and part-time jobs year round.

“We will work with motels, restaurants and tourism businesses to arrange ‘package deals’ that will benefit busi-ness all over the county,” Weldon continued. “By working together, we can all benefit, as a county. Possibilities are endless for us to help our own residents artistically and financially.”

In addition to the audi-

torium, AC/DC plans to build an instructional pro-gram at Delta-Montrose Technical College that will include culinary arts, theater management, stage and sound techni-cian classes and other arts-related classes. A kitchen, restaurant and student housing are all part of the vision, which has an estimated cost of $8 to $10 million.

In addition to Weldon, the board consists of John Jones, vice president; Marion Hofman, treasur-er; Kandi Connell, secre-tary; and Bernis Sattler, Tony Bowling and Don Geddes, board members.

They will be working with the Delta-Montrose Technical College and Delta County Joint School District to put the project in motion as soon as possible. Building will take place on the DMTC campus.

“We all realize the arts in Delta County have taken a back seat to lots of different ideas and projects. We, however, are committed to help our own residents realize that we live in a great county, with more to offer than most counties could even dream about. We want to make Delta County a better place to live through the arts and what they can do for us,” Weldon said.

“This past week has been a very productive one for us in terms of bringing better broad-band to rural Delta Coun-ty,” the Feb. 3 newsletter reports. Among the devel-opments:

• A board resolution was passed at the last DMEA board meeting tasking DMEA staff to create a business plan for the offering of middle-mile and last-mile ser-vices to members in the DMEA operating area. This will be analyzed as a potential progression of projects that will include extending fiber-optic con-nectivity to our Commu-nity Anchor Institutions (CAIs). CAIs include schools, libraries, local government offices, police, fire, ambulance and hos-pitals as well as further

development of fiber to business and homes.

• Last week the FCC increased its definition of broadband from 4 Mbps down/1Mbps up to 25 Mbps down/3 Mbps up. This is a very significant change and in one fell swoop has changed Delta County from being in an “underserved” category to an “unserved” catego-ry. This change has the potential to make Delta County eligible for a sig-nificant amount of grant funding from both federal and state sources.

• The Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) announced a new $20 million grant program for planning and con-struction of middle-mile networks in areas des-ignated for assistance under the Energy Impact Assistance (EIA) pro-gram. Delta and Gun-nison counties are EIA eligible. According to the

newsletter, “We antici-pate that Delta County and/or Region 10 will apply for this grant and if awarded, it could offset some of DMEA’s middle-mile construction costs.”

• On Feb. 2, the FCC announced it is looking at actions that will strike down protective state legislation that prevents municipalities from build-ing broadband networks when private enterprise fails to do so. Colorado is burdened in this way by SB-152 which requires that this question be put to a vote of the people before municipal proj-ects can move forward. In 2014 nine cities across Colorado “opted out” of the SB-152 restriction.

“All in all, these devel-opments are very encour-aging and we are hopeful that at last we are head-ing in a positive direc-tion,” the newsletter con-cludes.

DCED reports encouraging developments in broadband


County officials con-ducted a day of meet-ings last Thursday, Jan. 29, looking for ways to improve on the county’s program of supporting spay and neuter pro-grams.

Throughout the day, county officials including the administrator, sheriff and the BoCC met with representatives of Delta County Humane Society, CAWS, Black Canyon Ani-mal Sanctuary, Friends of Cedaredge Animal Con-trol and local veterinar-ians.

One of the groups, CAWS, is asking for fund-

ing of up to $25,000 annu-ally from the county for its animal welfare opera-tions including its shelter in Delta. CAWS officials say a majority of the ani-mals it takes in for care and adoption come from the unincorporated areas of the county.

The county commis-sioners responded to the CAWS request by stating their policy that any sup-port for animal welfare work must include all five groups equally.

The county divides $12,500 equally among the five groups for spay and neuter programs.

The Jan. 29 meet-ings were intended to give commissioners more detail of the individual animal welfare opera-tions in the county, about the extent of the stray animal problem here, and ways that spay and neuter services, including voucher programs, might be improved.

No decisions were reached last week. The commissioners will make funding decisions in the 2016 budget.

With advanced train-ing in emergency medical dispatch, dispatchers are qualified to give callers pre-arrival instructions and update ambulance crews during medical emergencies.

In 2014, 24,267 calls resulted in the dispatch of law enforcement, fire and/or ambulance per-sonnel. Because a fire or accident can generate multiple calls, the call volume far exceeds the number of dispatches. In 2013, 23,110 incidents were handled by the Delta County Communications Center, in addition to the many non-emergency calls also fielded by the dispatchers.

Black Canyon Camera Club is hosting the first ever Western Colorado Photography Showdown April 24-26 at the Delta Elks Lodge. This prom-ises to be an entertaining show which will be a com-petition between two types of photographers — those who mess with (edit) their pictures to make them more pleasing or artistic, and those who use only the settings of the camera — no editing except crop-

ping. The existence of these two genres has long confused and frustrated many art show judges, and the show will expose an obscure truth about photographers — they have a split personality and both sides are good!

Awards will be given for each level of expertise — student/novice, inter-mediate/advanced and professional — in each of these two divisions, but only one Best of Show.

The winning division will have bragging rights until the next photography showdown.

Three male and three female actors are needed for “Holding On ~ Letting Go,” a play by Bryan Har-netiaux.

Actors sought for hospice production

Kalea Sebesta, the daughter of Melody Sebe-sta, and Charles Voos Jr. exchanged wedding vows Jan. 17, 2015, in the Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio, Texas. The groom is the son of Charles and Sandra Voos of Reno, Nev.

The bride was given in marriage by her mother. Reverend Rene Esparza officiated the ceremony.

The bride wore a fit-ted Maggie Sottero gown made of lace with a sweetheart neckline, embellished beads down the spine and a cathe-dral-length veil with lace trim.

The maid of honor was Jacqueline Lyons, a friend of the bride. Tyler Webb, a friend of the groom, was best man.

A reception followed the ceremony. The wed-ding cake was made of

two tiers of white velvet and chocolate fudge with white buttercream frost-ing and black trim draped with white fondant strips and flowers.

Charles and Kalea are

both graduates of the University of Nevada, Reno. The groom is a first lieutenant in the Unit-ed States Marine Corps. The couple will reside in Hawaii.

Stock show volunteersDelta County fair royalty — junior princess Alexa Huff, queen Abigail Conley and princess Tess Gore — had the opportunity to represent our county at the National Western Stock Show, Jan. 16-18. These ladies donated over 80 hours to the National Western Stock Show. During the weekend they greeted visitors and answered questions, assisted visitors at the Coors Western Art Exhibit, handed out rib-bons at the Hunter Jumper Horse Show and worked at the Pony Trail Booth were they answered questions and signed autographs. Each evening they ushered ticket holders to the Gold Buckle special seating for the rodeo performance. They reported it was a great experience and they enjoyed meeting royalty from Colorado and other states.

In recognition of the season of the “heart,” Judy Benns will lead an Introduction to Compas-sionate Communication women’s group meeting. The class will explore the practice of effective heart communication skills and principles for understanding self and relating to others, based

on the work of Marshall Rosenberg.

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser is planned Fri-day, Feb. 13, in the fellow-ship hall at Delta United Methodist Church, 5th and Meeker. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. at a cost of $8 for adults. There’s no charge for chil-dren 10 and under.

The Delta County Col-orado Historical Society Committee on the Civil War is planning a Sig-

nature commemorative event May 7-10. Proceeds will help the committee host living historians, a living history encamp-ment and a keynote speaker. Spaghetti dinner fundraiser planned

Travis Keune, 23, of Delta, recently completed a wilderness expedition traveling in the Hima-layas with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Keune’s Himalaya Mountaineer-ing course took place over 41 days alongside eight coursemates and four instructors.

Keune, a 2009 gradu-ate of Delta High School, said mountaineering is an avid hobby. He’s climbed many of Colorado’s peaks and was learning to gain enough experience to tackle even bigger moun-tains.

The son of James and Kimberly Keune, Travis obtained a degree in wild-life, fishery and biology management from the University of Wyoming in

2013. He’s been working at Maxwell Industries in Cheyenne, Wyo., while he interviews for seasonal and full-time jobs.

He was one of the few participants coming from a higher elevation, so he had little trouble with the two glaciated passes over 16,000 feet in India’s Kumaon region.

The harder part was sleeping at higher alti-tudes.

“There were many nights I was only able to get a few hours of sleep,” he said. He also struggled with the group’s pace. “I had the most experience out of everyone in that class, so the speed of the course was a little slow,” he said.

Before getting to the passes, Keune and his

coursemates started their route finding at the village of Song, and they contin-ued to travel up the Pin-dari Valley to Zero Point. Ten more days of travel led the group to two more high-level campgrounds that ranged in elevations from 14,800 feet to 16,100 feet. After days of travel-ing up an incline, Keune and his coursemates were ready to begin their descent to the Shalang Glacier. Once arriving at the Shalang Glacier, the students had proven that they were ready to travel in small groups without the instructors for the last five days.

One leadership skill that was highlighted dur-ing this course was tol-erance for adversity and uncertainty. This expedi-

tion experienced tough weather while traveling through the Himalayas, and students had to be alert at all times. This area was very cold and the group was exposed to snow and fog, mak-ing it very difficult to see and communicate. Conse-quently, it was essential for each student to stay calm and keep a positive attitude. Since the group was able to learn and employ this skill, it stayed together as a team. Indi-vidually, Keune became a well-rounded mountain-eer and skilled leader.

On Jan. 27, Lincoln Elementary School dedi-cated a historic sign that once graced the “first” Lincoln School in down-town Delta. The sign was transferred by the Delta County Historical Soci-ety to the school as part of a collaborative effort among LES staff, stu-dents and parents, the district office and the

Delta County Museum.Initially, school rep-

resentatives thought a bell would be a fitting addition to the school. They were informed the historic Lincoln School did have a bell tower, or cupola, but never a bell. It did, however, have a large stone sign over the doorway that had been sitting in the museum

courtyard for the past 25 years. In late 2014, the museum board of trustees unanimously approved the transfer of the sign to the school. The lintel has been placed on a custom mount at the entrance to the school.

In commemoration of this occasion, Jim Wetzel, museum director, provid-ed this history of the first Lincoln School:

By early 1908, the Central School build-ing in Delta was bulg-ing at the seams. First built in 1884 as Delta’s first “real” school, two later additions failed to keep up with the grow-ing town and the need for school rooms. Though built for 50 students and two teachers, the school had grown to 140 stu-dents and five teachers by 1906. This overcrowding caused additional school-room space to be rented on Delta’s Main Street.

In July 1908, architect C.J. Anderson had been awarded a contract to furnish plans and speci-fications for a new high school to relieve the bur-den on the Central School building. It wasn’t until August that a contractor was selected to build the

new school, but initially only one wing (of two) was contracted. It was to have a capacity of 250 students.

The Lincoln School “right wing” was com-pleted and ready for occu-pancy in May 1909. It was referred to as the “girls’ wing” as it had a girls’ kitchen and cooking room, sewing room, toi-lets and shower baths in the basement. The main entrance to the school was on Fourth Street in the block bounded by Meeker Street, Grand Avenue and Fifth Street. The LINCOLN SCHOOL lintel was placed over the main entrance doors and had been quarried from sandstone in Escalante Canyon.

It would be a year later when the sec-ond wing of the Lincoln School was built, com-pleted in early 1911. It was referred to as the “boys’ wing” and included boys’ manual training rooms, toilets and shower bath, also in the base-ment. A gymnasium in the basement was built between the two wings. The entrance to the boys’ wing was facing Grand Avenue, but it was also accessible through the main entrance on Fourth Street. The final cost of this Lincoln School was about $45,000.

When the Lincoln School first opened in 1909, grades 10, 11 and 12 were located there. All other grades were locat-ed in the Central School building next door.

The final classes held at the Lincoln School were in 1978. The same year, the school building and property was purchased by the City of Delta, as it was exploring plans to refurbish the building and possibly move city hall into it.

Even before the final classes were held, a new Lincoln Elementary School had been planned on Garnet Mesa, and it opened in 1979. Long before this, a new high school had been built in 1921 (now the Perform-ing Arts Center) and the Lincoln School was des-ignated for elementary school grades, which it held for over 55 years.

The final disposition of the 1908 Lincoln School was not determined until 1985, when the city decided to raze the building, having explored all other options — and costs — to reuse the building. It was a politi-cal “football” for several years, until city officials decided to tear it down. It was dismantled brick by brick, and they were subsequently recycled. The LINCOLN SCHOOL lintel was stored by the city until 1989 when it was donated to the Delta museum.

Morgan McCracken has graduated from the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power School at Naval Nuclear Power Train-ing Command in Goose Creek, S.C.

Nuclear Power School is a rigorous six-month course that trains offi-cer and enlisted students in the science and engi-neering fundamental to the design, operation, and maintenance of naval nuclear propulsion plants.

Graduates next under-go additional instruction at a prototype training

unit before serving as a surface warfare officer aboard a nuclear-pow-ered surface ship or as an electronics technician aboard a nuclear-pow-ered submarine.

McCracken is the son of Kyle and Cyndi McCracken, and grand-son of Vern and Jan McCracken, all of Delta. He lives in Goose Creek with his wife Madelyn McCracken and daughter Maddox.

He is a 2012 graduate of Delta High School.

About the last two hours of every class are for the final test and shoo-ing a .22 caliber Rimfire to assess gun-handling skills. The shooting exer-cise uses the Colorado Parks and Wildlife shoot-ing trailer.

Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1949, must have successfully com-pleted an approved hunter education course before applying for a hunting license.

The most basic pur-pose of a hunter educa-tion course is to teach safe, responsible firearm handling in the field, in the vehicle and in the home after hunting. Through lectures, hands-on activities and videos, students learn about fire-arms and ammunition, firearm safety, shooting fundamentals and fire-

Subjects covered include hunter responsibility, wildlife identification and man-agement, game care, out-door survival and more. Students also receive introductions to hunt-ing with bows and black powder firearms.

Hunter education courses are recommend-ed for anyone who spends time in the outdoors, whether or not they intend to hunt. Basic out-door skills acquired in a hunter education course can be invaluable during any outdoor activity.

“Latha math,” declares a library patron’s cell phone, although it sounds a good deal more like, “waa maah.” The phone is speaking fluent Scottish Gaelic and the patron is immediately absorbed in the first of many lan-guage lessons available through Mango Languag-es, a database offered by the Delta County Librar-ies.

Mango is free for all library patrons and can be accessed anywhere with an Internet connec-tion. Each lesson com-bines real-life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear instructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application by focusing on the four key elements of language learning: vocabulary, pro-nunciation, grammar and culture.

Mango offers access to 60 foreign language cours-

es and 17 English courses taught completely in the user’s native language. In addition to traditional language courses, Mango also offers the opportu-nity to learn through for-eign film and access to a variety of specialty mini courses, like Pirate, Med-ical Spanish and romance courses.

And a Mango app is now available to down-load to any device, mak-ing it instantly possible to learn a language while driving to work, lying sick in bed, enjoying a family dinner, or going for a run.

“Some people need to learn a second language for business or travel.

Others want to for per-sonal or professional development,” explains district director Annette Choszczyk. “No matter the reason, learning a language should be fun.With Mango, it definitely is.”

Not only does Mango keep learning from becoming a tedious chore, it actually can help to pre-vent chores themselves from becoming tedious.

Staff at the Delta County Libraries will be happy to assist patrons with starting Mango and setting up the app on devices. Some staff mem-bers might even be will-ing to give a conversation in Scottish Gaelic a try.

‘Alive at 25’ offeredFeb. 9

“Alive at 25,” a defen-sive driving course for drivers ages 15-24, taught by Colorado State Patrol, consists of four hours of classroom instruction. The early intervention program is intended to prevent traffic violations, collisions and/or fatali-ties by focusing on typical driving hazards. Partici-pants receive a certificate and can then take the test for a driving permit at age 15 1/2 or older. The next class date is Monday, Feb. 9, 4:30 to 9 p.m., at Bill Heddles Recreation Center.

Verna MarksberryVerna Marksberry died

Jan. 20, 2015, at Eagle Ridge of the Grand Val-ley assisted living home in Grand Junction. She was 88.

Services were held Jan. 24 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.

Verna B. Shipman was born Jan. 9, 1927, in Hornersville, Mo., to John and Cora (Williams) Shipman.

She was part of the Nazarene Church in Delta for the past 40 years. She enjoyed sew-ing, cooking, gardening, crocheting and listening to Christian radio.

She is survived by her daughter Carol (Kelly) Greene of Silverthorne; her brother, Herbert Ship-man of Delta; a sister, Patsy Cairns of Delta; two granddaughters, Melissa Rogers of Grand Junc-tion and Ashley Feldman of Tampa, Fla.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Marksberry; her son, Keith Marksberry; and a brother, Ralph Shipman.

Bob ElliottRobert “Bob” Elliott

of Delta died at Colorow Care Center in Olathe Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015. He was 81.

A celebration of life will be held on his birth-day, July 19.

Mr. Elliott was born July 19, 1933, in Bing-hamton, N.Y., to Rob-ert and Thea (Yarrison) Elliott. He spent his childhood and attended school in Williamsport, Pa.

He served in the U.S. Army and the Air Force during the Korean Con-flict.

He was chief of police in Delta from Aug. 12, 1974, until Sept. 1, 1988. He was previously a lieu-tenant in the Jefferson

County Sheriff ’s Depart-ment.

He was a member of Delta Masonic Lodge A.F. and A.M. #62 and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of El Jebel Shrine Club, Western Colorado Shrine Club, serving as president from 2001-2002, and president of Colorado Chiefs of Police in 1979. He served on the board of directors of the law enforcement academy and Delta Coun-ty Ambulance District.

He enjoyed being a Shrine clown and spend-ing time with his family, especially his grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Carol of Delta; his sons, Richard Elliott of Delta and Scott Elliott of Colorado Springs; his daughter, Cindy Elliott (Mark Erwin) of Cory, Sandra (David) Secrest of Watauga, Texas, and Cindy Wingert of College Station, Texas; his sister, Linda (Chuck) Tibbitts of Delta; two sisters-in-law, Dixie Goldsby and Linda Gay Blough; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

died at University Hos-pital in Denver Jan. 27, 2015, after battling can-cer. She was 38.

A graveside funeral service was held Feb. 2 at Mesa View Cemetery in Delta. A celebration of life followed at First Bap-tist Church of Delta.

Brandy was born in Delta May 26, 1976, to Pete and Mary Jane (Martinez) Gonzales. She grew up in Delta and Craig. She graduated from Delta High School in 1994. She attended Delta-Montrose Techni-cal College and Colorado Mesa University, gradu-ating in 1999.

She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Delta.

She enjoyed spending time with her three chil-dren, family and friends. She also enjoyed scrap-booking, singing and karaoke.

She is survived by her mother and stepfa-

ther, Mary Jane Gonzales and Richard Rodriguez; a son, Teagun Brown; two daughters, Adryanna and Ayvah Vigil; a sister, Jaimie Rodriguez-Gon-zales; her grandparents, Connie Cisneros and Joe Rodriguez; and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Pete Gonzales; her uncle, Billy Gonzales; and her grandparents, Eva and Pete Gonzales and Julian Martinez.

Bud DouganClarence Stanley “Bud”

Dougan died Wednes-day, Jan. 28, 2015, at his home in Springfield, Mo. He was 89 and had bat-tled esophageal cancer.

Mr. Dougan was born in Glenwood Springs Aug. 2, 1925, to Clarence and Rose Dougan.

He served as a squad leader with the rank of sergeant while serving in the 29th Division of the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Wanda Vanderpool Aug. 15, 1951.

He was employed as a belt technician at Dayco Industries for 20 years.

He attended Second Baptist Church for 50-plus years.

Mr. Dougan is survived by a brother, Elbert Dou-gan of Delta; his children, Kathy Myers, Don Dou-gan and David Dougan; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years; and a sister, Patri-cia.

(Shreeves) Grayson died Jan. 25, 2015, at Scotts-dale Osborn Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz. She was 60.

She was born Sept. 8, 1954, to Joseph and Lil-lian (White) Shreeves. She grew up in the Delta area and lived briefly in Las Vegas, Nev., before marrying Jeff Grayson on Nov. 13, 1979, and mov-ing to Phoenix.

As a girl, she joined Theta Ro in Grand Junc-tion and helped found the Delta chapter. Later she joined the Rebekahs, Eastern Star and Ama-ranth. She enjoyed work-ing in the health care profession, reading mys-tery-crime novels, collect-ing frog memorabilia, and spending time with her husband and children.

She is survived by three daughters, Helena Grayson, Jennifer Gray-son and Connie Grayson, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; her

mother; a sister, Alice; a brother, Dennis, all of Delta; a brother, Donald (Juli) of Tempe, Ariz.; and several nieces and neph-ews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and father.

A celebration of life memorial service was held Feb. 2 at the Chan-dler Masonic Lodge in Chandler, Ariz.

ert died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at Paonia Care Center in Paonia. He was 71.

Mr. Bilberry was born in Mineral Wells, Texas, June 2, 1943, to E.J. and Ruby (Brown) Bilberry. He spent his childhood in Brawley, Calif., graduat-ing from Brawley Union High School.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a master plumber and enjoyed fishing and wood-working.

Mr. Bilberry is sur-vived by his two sons, Jeff (Stacy Hinze) Bilber-ry and Mike (Janet) Bil-berry; a daughter, Tracy (Adam) Stowell; two brothers, Eddie and Dale Bilberry; a sister, Delo-res Herstedt; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Velda Wellsandt and Linda Swain; and his pre-vious wives, Terry Bilber-ry and Peggy Bilberry.

Isom Sr. of Delta died Feb. 2, 2015, at Delta County Memorial Hospi-tal. He was 89.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.

Mr. Isom was born in Delta June 7, 1925, to John and Ruth (Fisk) Isom. He lived most of his life in Delta.

He married Willa Dean Wilson in June 1945.

During World War II he worked as a welder in the shipyards in Cali-fornia.

He retired when the Holly Sugar factory closed. He and his wife built two mobile home parks and managed them for years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, the out-doors, and spending time with his family and at the senior center. He was a member of a UFO club and enjoyed sharing his UFO experiences. He was a life member of Delta Elks Lodge #1235.

He is survived by his son, Bob (Peggy) Isom of Delta; his daughter, Mary Jane Lightfoot of Delta; his daughter-in-law, Michelle Isom of Delta; grandchildren, Jeri Far-ley of Delta, Philip Wil-son of Weaver, Ala., and Michael Isom and Kim-berly Isom-Cormier, both of Delta; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Willa Dean; and his son, Rick Isom.

died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, at Colorow Care Center. She was 80.

She was born in Mar-tinsville, Ohio, Nov. 15, 1934, to Clyde and Gene-va (Curtis) Hartman.

She married Franklin Maybank Sept. 22, 1951; Norman Dashner Sept. 18, 1958; Anthony Varia; Cody Scholl; and Rodney Meyer.

Mrs. Meyer enjoyed gardening, western his-tory, especially with John Wayne, and family gene-alogy.

She is survived by her children, Franklin Maybank II, Harry May-bank, Curtis Dashner of the New Orleans area and Debora Dashner of Crawford; seven grand-children, Sean Maybank, Cody Maybank, Phyl-sia Harrington, Micheal Badeaux, Dustin Fite, Brittney Dashner and Brooke Dashner of the New Orleans area; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Kennedy of Virginia and Sharon Rainwater of Kentucky; and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her second hus-band, Norman Dashner; and daughter, Deanna Dashner.

Ester JohnsonEster Lois Johnson of

Paonia died at her home Jan. 23, 2015. She was 92.

She was born in that same home June 8, 1922, to John and Anna (Aron-son) Beezley.

She married Thorel “Skip” Johnson in the rose garden of that home June 8, 1941. They lived in several areas in Colo-rado, including Golden and Meeker, and trav-eled around the world before retiring in Paonia. The marriage ended in divorce.

Mrs. Johnson cared for her mother for many years. She delivered Paonia Senior Center meals to the homebound for more than 20 years. She was active in the Pit-kin Mesa Club, the Gar-den Club and the Unit-ed Methodist Church of Paonia where she sang in the choir and provided flower arrangements.

She enjoyed her family and gardening.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie John-son of Paonia; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held in June.

Summers died Wednes-day, Jan. 28, 2015, at his home in Delta. He was 79.

A private family ser-vice will be held at his Delta home.

Mr. Summers was born in Yuma April 6, 1935, to Max and Margaret (Jack-son) Summers. He grew up in Yuma and attended Alameda High School in Lakewood.

On Jan. 20, 1956, he married Esther Pallaro in Denver.

He was a member of Delta Street Rodders and Union 28 Asbestos Work-ers. He enjoyed old cars, old dogs and spending time with his grandchil-dren.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Esther Summers of Delta; two daughters, Pamela Dun-lap of Olathe and Linda Summers of Grand Junc-tion; two sisters, Fadon-na Hurd of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Vanita Nelson of Eckert; three grand-children; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, David Summers and Dale Sum-mers.



Eugene Boiani Jr.Eugene “Gene” Mar-

shall Boiani Jr. died Jan. 31, 2015, at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta.

A visitation is planned Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose.

Mr. Boiani was a pro-fessional guitarist and composer before a brain aneurysm and subse-quent auto accident. He continued to play profes-sionally until his inju-ries advanced to a point requiring full-time assis-tance and ultimately a move into a nursing home in Massachusetts. He lived his last few years at Willow Tree Care Cen-ter in Delta, where he enjoyed his brother’s vis-its.

Before his injuries, Mr. Boiani, known to many as “Skeets,” enjoyed suc-cess with bands playing the road circuit and big clubs in New York City, New Jersey and Phila-delphia. In the late ‘60s he had a top 10 Billboard hit. He gained East Coast recognition as a member of several bands and was regularly invited to sit in with nationally rec-ognized greats. He was associated with the New England Conservatory of Classical Guitarists.

He is survived by his brothers, Edward Boiani of Eckert and Samuel Boiani of Lewis, N.Y.; daughters, Laura, Lisa, Michelle and Denise Boiani, all of Saratoga Springs/Glen Falls, N.Y.; grandsons, Ritchie Kar-wan and Dominico Boiani, both of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and granddaugh-ters, Angelina and Molly Boiani, both of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The Black Canyon Chapter of the Audubon Society is offering three field trips to look for raptors (eagles, hawks, owls and falcons) in the Montrose and Delta/Hotchkiss areas. The trips will be limited to 12 people per day on a first come, first served basis. No previous experience is required, just an inter-est in the birds of these areas.

The field trip for the Montrose area will be Feb. 21, leaving from the downtown City Market parking lot at 9 a.m. Two field trips will be held in

the Delta/Hotchkiss area on Feb. 7 and 14. Both will be leaving from the Hotchkiss City Market at 8 a.m.

All the trips will go until at least 1 p.m. and possibly longer depend-ing on the desires of the

group. Those joining the trips are asked to bring their own binoculars, a lunch, and to dress warm-ly.

Last year over 100 rap-tors of seven different spe-cies were seen each day.

The Delta County Rock Wranglers will meet Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. at 511 E. 10th Street in Delta. The program will be “Petroglyphs in the Four Corners Region.” Everyone is welcome.

Delta Fine Arts will feature watercolor art-ist/teacher Dani Tupper at the Tuesday, Feb. 10, meeting. DFA meets monthly and is open to the public. The Febru-ary meeting begins at 2 p.m. and will be held in a new location, Orchard City Town Hall, 9661 2100 Road, Austin. There will be a short club meet-ing followed by Tupper’s demonstration.

Dani Tupper has been afforded the opportunity to paint around the world, having lived in 10 states, Australia and Spain. She still travels extensively and holds painting holi-days here and abroad for fellow artists and stu-dents. Trips have includ-ed Spain, Italy, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Texas, Mexico, and areas of Colorado and Utah.

Tupper is active in numerous art orga-nizations and is a sig-nature member of Colorado Watercolor Society, Southern Colo-rado Watercolor Society (SCWS) and a lifetime member of the Transpar-ent Watercolor Society of America, Southern Colo-rado Watercolor Society,

Western Colorado Water-color Society (WCWS) and Aurora Artist Guild. She founded SCWS and served as president for six years, has served as president of WCWS for four years and is current-ly vice president.

Tupper prefers work-ing in watercolor, but continues to experiment with other mediums, techniques and different surfaces. While she enjoys painting all subjects, she likes to paint in season — spring flowers, rush-ing streams and green of summer, colors of autumn and winter scenes. She

especially enjoys portrait and figure work.

She lives in Delta and gives classes and work-shops throughout the region. She also juries art shows and gives critiques and demonstrations for art groups. Her website is www.danitupper.com.

Concert for harp and baritone next in chamber music series

Have you ever won-dered how a dog can find someone who’s buried beneath an avalanche? Or how dogs can find a lost hiker in the wilder-ness?

To find out how they do it, and how the dogs are trained, come to Ridgway State Park, at noon Sunday, Feb. 8, for a fascinating demonstra-tion by Search and Res-cue Dogs of Colorado and the Telluride Ski Patrol.

Search and rescue dogs are used every year in Colorado to assist in searching for missing children, hikers, hunt-ers, snowmobilers, ski-ers and accident victims. The dogs’ owners, who are involved in search and rescue organiza-tions, work with their canine companions for at least two years to com-plete training and cer-tification. The dogs and their owners are trained

to spring into action at a moment’s notice.

Trainers and their dogs will explain the training and how the animals are used. Then they’ll head outside for on-the-ground demon-strations.

At the annual confer-ence of the Western Colo-rado Horticultural Soci-ety (WCHS), Mike Gib-son received the Friend of the Industry award. Gibson is the CEO/sales manager at United Mar-ket Exchange (Hi Qual-ity Packing).

As awards were pre-sented, the recipients’ biographies were read. It must not have taken long for Gibson to realize he was one of those recipi-ents when he heard the following introduction:

Born on the Western Slope of Colorado, this award recipient grew up within the agricul-tural community, so

he completely under-stands seven-day-a-week responsibilities. After high school, he received his pilot’s license and then went on to obtain an associate degree in busi-ness. In roughly 1982 he returned to his hometown and began working for Bob Broughton at United Marketing Exchange.

He spent the next several years with Bob, as a fruit salesman dur-ing the summer and fall, and chemical sales in the winter and spring.

In 1991, Mike went to work for Gerber Products Co., the baby food com-pany. Located in Arkan-sas, Gerber had a 21-acre packing facility, all stainless steel equipment and two working shifts followed by a cleaning/maintenance shift. As a buyer and field qual-ity manager, Mike got to travel purchasing spin-ach, carrots, apples and what-not. Perhaps he got tired of tasting baby food, or knowing how many aphid legs were not allowed in the spin-ach. Maybe he got home-sick. In 1995 he returned to western Colorado.

Exchange. With over 25 years at United Market-ing Exchange, Mike has made quality of product for his buyers and quan-tity of return on growers’ dollars his priority. He is most definitely a num-bers man, always know-ing how much is coming into the packing house, what’s in the cooler and staying on top of where the peach or apple mar-ket is. His willingness to go the extra mile, includ-ing personally loading trucks all hours of the

day and night, shows his respect of the growers and their product.

Mike has never been one to put all his “peach-es in one basket.” So besides the occasional apricots, nectarines, peaches, plums, pluots, cherries and apples you would expect of a fruit

salesman, Mike has also been known to market onions, beans and carv-ing pumpkins.

The new owners of United Marketing Exchange, Joe and Pam Davis, will continue fruit marketing but are expanding into other venues including: wheat,

corn, pinto beans and Noah’s Bucket.

The Western Colora-do Horticultural Society (WCHS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the future development of agriculture in west-ern Colorado through the association and combined efforts of its members.

H&H Bolt and Supply, Inc., opened in 1978 with a business plan of ser-vicing the roof control needs of the western underground mines. Initial products produced by H&H included forged head resin bolts, roof plates and pans. The roof bolts were made of rebar. In the early 1980s H&H, us-ing the same raw material as the roof bolts, began servicing the construc-tion industry in western Colorado with fabricated reinforcing steel (rebar) and other concrete accessories under the trade name of Rocky Mountain Rebar Fabrication. H&H continued produc-ing its own line of roof control prod-ucts until the 1980s, when the produc-tion equipment was sold to a large competitor. H&H later produced roof control products for Dwyidag Systems International.

In the late 1990s, H&H Bolt & Huesker, Inc., introduced the mining industry to the concept of longwall re-covery mats assembled from Huesker geogrid products. H&H still provides the longwall recovery mats to mines throughout the U.S.

In 2002 the business was purchased by Gregg and Kari Kuta. Gregg is a Delta native and had been employed at the business since October 1984. Kari is employed by Delta County School District as an educator.

Rocky Mountain Rebar and Lumber/

H&H Bolt continues to service both the mining and construction indus-tries with lumber, a full line of building materials, fabricated rebar, concrete accessories and Huesker longwall re-covery mats. The lumber and building materials were added in 2011.

Daily operations include estimating and detailing rebar and lumber, rebar fabrication, longwall recovery mat as-sembly, deliveries and more. The busi-ness provides reinforcing materials, lumber and other building materials to contractors and private individuals.

Rocky Mountain Rebar and Lum-ber/H&H Bolt is housed in the Delta Industrial Park two miles east of Delta. The location, staff, facilities and equip-ment provide a strong base for a wide variety of activities.

The business is a primary employer, with 95% of its sales revenue coming from outside of Delta County. Of the 18 employees, six — Detrie Young, Mike Branson, Mike Fancher, Robert Durant, Jose Bernal and Pat Kuta — have been with the company 15+ years. Pat, lead estimator/detailer, is a 29-year em-ployee. Recent additions to the crew include Delbert Myers and Jerry Read. Delbert and Jerry both have many years experience in various positions in lumber/building materials opera-tions throughout the Delta-Montrose area. In an acquisition that was finalized Feb. 2, Bank of Colorado purchased Montrose-Bank, with branches in Montrose, Delta, Cedaredge, Hotchkiss and Paonia. Bank of Colorado has 40 locations state-wide including the Mon-troseBank locations. As part of this transaction, Bank of Colorado gained MontroseBank’s portfolio of $234 million in assets and retained 100 percent of its staff.

“With our model of decision making by local branch presidents and a very responsive and flex-ible staff, we are poised to meet the business and community banking needs of Western Colorado,” said Shawn Osthoff, president of Bank of Colorado.

their lunches to eat while enjoying the program.

This series of educa-tional opportunities is designed to educate the public on topics related to aging, disabilities and some of the chal-lenges caregivers face. Nathan Sponseller is well-known in Hotchkiss because of his long banking career, 19 years at First State Bank plus another six years at Bank One Trust Company in Ohio, and as an officer of the Hotchkiss Community Chamber of Com-merce for 20 years. Since Jan. 5 he is the vice president of operations and business devel-opment for the Delta County Federal Credit Union.

Sponseller said he chose to move to the credit union because “credit unions being not for profit and owned by their members have only one mission and that’s serving their members.”

He wasn’t looking for a career move but he was asked to consider joining the credit union due to his new product development, marketing and special projects background. “It just fit what the credit union was looking for.”

Sponseller has always liked the not-for-profit model

because when decisions are made about the community, the community is the primary concern. “Credit unions don’t have any motivation other than serving the needs of their members and not enriching someone out of the area,” he said. “Decision making takes into account the needs of the community and only the com-munity and members.”

The credit union’s board of directors are all local vol-unteers and members. Other financial institutions have directors who may not live in the local community.

Credit unions are examined in the same manner as banks are. “They have similar type examinations and regulations on an annual basis. They also have the equivalent of FDIC insurance, which is through NCUA, National Credit Union Association,” Sponseller said. “Deposits are insured up to $250,000. Credit unions are very much on par with banks as far as their stability.”

To become a member of the

Delta County Federal Credit Union in Hotchkiss or Delta, a person must “live, work, go to school, or worship in Delta county or have an immediate family member that is a mem-ber of the credit union.”

Sponseller’s initial projects will be to establish a mobile banking platform for the mem-bers’ smartphones or tablets. He will overhaul the credit union’s Internet banking and website. He will handle mar-keting, promotional duties and product development. The credit union’s strategic plan includes offering commercial account services and loans in the future. “That will add sig-nificantly to the offerings of the credit union,” he said.

“The credit union is enthu-siastic about me continuing [in the chamber of commerce],” Sponseller said.

Working together, investi-gators from the Paonia Police Department and Delta Coun-ty Sheriff ’s Office were able to fairly quickly identify and apprehend three suspects allegedly involved in the bur-glary and theft of Hays Drug.

Levi Hyde, 26, Kaysha Devlin, 24, both of Austin, and Kasey Kendall, 31, of Paonia face charges of second degree burglary, a Class 3 felony, and theft ($5,000-$19,999), a Class 5 felony. Hyde and Devlin are also charged with unlawful possession of Schedule II nar-cotics, a Class 4 felony.

According to the arrest affi-davit filed in Delta County Court Jan. 29, the suspects forced entry into the building through an exterior window and then into a wall that led to the inside of the pharmacy. The break-in occurred some-time during the early morn-ing hours of Jan. 23, when the store was closed.

In the arrest warrant, Paonia Chief Scott Leon noted entry was gained through a hole about 11 x 13 inches in size “meaning the person(s) who entered into the store were not very large in size.”

A large quantity of con-trolled substances were removed from the pharmacy, including hydrocodon, oxyco-done, hydromorphone, mor-

phine, Oxycontin, prometh-azine, eszopiclone, metha-done, lorazepam and aceti-menophen. Value exceeded $11,000.

The following day, PPD received information that Kendall was allegedly sell-ing some of the stolen drugs. Kendall is known to local law enforcement officials, as are some of his associates. That knowledge led them to contact Hyde and Kendall at a motel in Delta. After obtaining con-sent to search the motel room, they discovered numerous syringes, used and unused, as well as a backpack filled with large clear Ziploc bags filled with “hundreds” of prescrip-tion pills. According to the arrest affidavit, a search war-rant was obtained and the pills were confiscated. Inves-tigators were able to match the markings from many of the pills to the detailed list of prescription pills taken from the pharmacy, and Hyde and Devlin were taken into cus-tody.

Bond was initially set at $15,000 for all three indi-viduals. Kendall posted bond shortly after his arrest at his Paonia home on Jan. 30, and Devlin’s bond was lowered to $1,000. Devlin and Hyde remain in the Delta Coun-ty Jail. Their initial court appearance will be Wednes-day afternoon.

What in the world is this?Emily Browning (right), the TV-watching cat, loves CBS Sunday Morning’s Moment in Nature. Mainly she likes birds and really big cats, but not too many dogs, elephants or alligators. However, the video by Ziggy Livnat of iguanas walking around the U.S. Virgin Islands really did capture her attention this past Sunday morning. Even though iguanas don’t tweet or chirp like birds, Emily was fascinated nevertheless.


Bummer. The rains came last Friday and Saturday and put a damper on a day that was supposed to be filled with winter fun at Crawford State Park. It was to be a win-ter celebration with ice skat-ing, ice fishing, sledding and cross-country skiing.

Kelly Beauchamp of Crawford State Park said the ice skating rink was slushy from the rain. There was little snow, and with all the rain there was no way to sled or ski. Colorado Parks and Wild-life did hold its ice fishing clinic on how to catch crappie.

“It was all supposed to be under a full moon, and there

was total cloud cover,” Beau-champ said. Admission was free all day on Saturday, Jan. 31. The date was chosen spe-cifically because there was going to be a full moon.

Crawford State Park will plan another day of fun later in the year.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife website lists an ice fishing tournament at Blue Mesa Reservoir on Saturday, Feb. 7.

Closer to home, on Satur-day, Feb. 7, at Island Lake on the Grand Mesa the Cedaredge Chamber of Commerce pres-ents a fun ice fishing tourna-ment with cash prizes. Kids 17 and under are free, adult entry is $30 each.

Rain washes out winter celebration


The very active and cre-ative Downtown Improvement Committee met on Jan. 20.

Tom Wills, committee sec-retary, writes that Hotchkiss K-8 principal Carrie Yantzer and shop teacher Harold Burch are the catalysts for some brightly painted cut-out flowers to be placed in the Bridge Street planters by mid-March. Then in May real flowers will be planted.

“Harold and his kids are very excited about helping to beautify Hotchkiss dur-ing the non-growing season,” Wills writes. “Some of the art flowers will remain in the boxes and smaller planters if needed during the summer. The rest will be stored away and reinstalled in October for the winter season.” Hotchkiss High School art classes may also contribute flowers.

Kathy McKee of the Hotchkiss-Crawford Histori-cal Society notified the com-mittee that a vote in Hotchkiss in 1935 made the zinnia the town flower.

The committee will replace the Hotchkiss Community Chamber of Commerce bench at the post office with a new wooden bench. The chamber’s bench will be moved to a new spot in town “where it would be most needed.” That loca-tion has not yet been decid-ed.

a community bulletin board on the side of Ace Gambles in front of the walkway between the post office and the store.

Downtown Improvement discussed the idea of private and publicly owned benches on Bridge Street and in the Littlefield pocket park being sanded and resealed.

According to Wills, the

Hotchkiss Planning Com-mission will finish the draft Downtown Improvement Plan in a couple of months before seeking town council approv-al.

The next Downtown Improvement Committee meeting will be at the Coal Train on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 8:30 a.m.

In a special meeting the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 3, the Paonia Town Board set a hearing to dismiss its town clerk, who was laid off last December.

Barb Peterson was one of three employees let go due to the town’s finances. Her final day at work was Dec. 24 and she was to be paid through February as terms of her sev-erance.

Apparently that action did not follow state law, and on Tuesday the trustees decided to follow the provi-sions of CRS 31-4-307. Under the state law an officer of a municipality, such as a town clerk, may be removed by a majority vote of the town board for cause. However, no

such removal shall be made without a charge in writing and an opportunity of hearing being given.

After town manager Jane Berry presented a multi-page document outlining charges against Peterson to the trust-ees, the board set a hear-ing pursuant to state law. They also approved serving the written charge to Peter-son, who was not present at Tuesday’s meeting.

The hearing was set for Tuesday, March 3, at 9 a.m. at Paonia Town Hall.

Ky Burt is a singer/songwriter/multi-instru-mentalist musician born and raised in the Mid-

western United States. Prone to travel majestic landscapes, Burt has been picking up a variety of musical influences in the ‘Americana’ vein through time living in Virginia, Colorado, Vermont and his recent long-standing home of Arizona. Music has been the well-traveled suitcase that he carries through his journeys.

Burt’s intention for coming to Elsewhere is to commit himself fully to songwriting and the ulti-mate creation of his first studio album. In addition to music, he has been working in digital film and photography, two medi-ums he intends to inter-weave with the production process of his music and his recent interest in sto-rytelling.

Katherine Saviskas is coming to Elsewhere to edit footage she recent-ly shot in Denver for The WHO Question, an interactive web project addressing the question: who do youth need as public school teachers? Through video vignettes, portrait photography and a dynamic historical time-line, web users and live event attendees listen and contribute to stories of students, teachers and parents across Denver, New Orleans, Chicago and New York.

Saviskas is also in the middle of co-producing a documentary film, “Teach-er Like Me,” which tells the stories of five adults in San Francisco traveling a new education pipeline — from city streets back into classrooms — but this time as educators.

The effort to improve water use by agricultur-al users received a big shot in the arm with the awarding of $8 million from USDA/NRCS for the RCPP Lower Gunni-son project.

“This award is a great beginning to the com-plete project envisioned in the original proposal,” said Steve Schrock, coor-dinator of NoChicoBrush. “The Colorado River Dis-trict is the lead partner on this project and is now in the process of meeting

with project partners in scaling the overall proj-ect.”

NoChicoBrush, a col-laborative effort of area ag producers and land resource agencies, will co-host a series of out-reach meetings to talk about the results of the first field season of farm irrigation efficien-cy research. Dr. Perry Cabot will be presenting the research results at a meeting in Hotchkiss on Thursday, Feb. 19. It will be at Memorial Hall from noon to 2 p.m. A light lunch will be pro-vided.

He will also talk in Montrose on Thursday, Feb. 26, at Friendship Hall from noon to 2 p.m.

NCB is co-hosting these meetings with

Delta Conservation Dis-trict and the Shavano Conservation District.

According to Schrock, the December meeting of NoChicoBrush ended with a discussion of “saved water” resulting from irrigation efficiency. Both the Hotchkiss and Montrose meetings will devote time to the impli-cations of saved water that may result from on-farm and off-farm irriga-tion efficiency.

Local water users, as well as decision mak-ers, are encouraged to attend.

Schrock notes in the meeting announcement, “The future of agricul-ture irrigation water in our region is the sub-ject of much discussion, planning and legislating. The NCB vision is to put our farmers and ranch-ers in the forefront of these developments with particular attention as to the actions ag produc-ers and ditch companies might individually con-sider today in prepara-tion for the future.”

The Crawford area Gunnison sage-grouse working group will hold a meeting on Thurs-day, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. in the Maloney House at the Delta County Fair-grounds in Hotchkiss.

Items on the agenda include: coordinating spring lek counts; sum-

mer field work building Zeedykes: working on a conservation easement for Gunnison sage-grouse and the working group’s role in the future.

Sage-grouse group will meet Feb. 12

The Hotchkiss Neigh-borhood Watch program, that was revitalized this past summer by a group of interested citizens, will be holding a fund-raiser event on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Memorial Hall from 5-7 p.m. A soups and sides buffet dinner, featuring a wide range of winter soups, chilis and breads begins at 5 p.m. with live music starting at 6 p.m. The event will include the all-you-can-eat meal and entertain-ment for $5 per person donation at the door.

Entertainment will include eclectic folk gypsy music by the aptly named Nomad Mountain Outlaws. The three piece (and sometimes more) Paonia-based group fea-tures a range of instru-ments including accordi-on, violin, guitar, mando-lin and banjo and offers

a contemporary take on Americana tinged, gypsy inspired folk music.

There will also be a fun observation learning exercise led by Hotchkiss Deputy Marshal Gates Shaklee.

Funds raised will be used to purchase addi-tional Neighborhood Watch signage and win-dow decals as well as educational materials. Mark the date.

The Neighborhood Watch citizen’s group has a board of direc-tors appointed by the Hotchkiss mayor and works with Marshal’s Department. Deputy Gates Shaklee is the advisor.

The group meets monthly on the second Monday at the Hotchkiss Town Hall at 6 p.m. The meetings include an over-view of the past month’s

Marshal’s Department activities, planning for fundraising and brain-storming ideas on how to encourage citizens to be more aware of pos-sible criminal activities in their neighborhoods. Observation and report-ing training sessions are also being planned.

Neighborhood Watch to hold fundraiser

Isaac Fisher of Hotchkiss, a student at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., was named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester, which ended in Decem-ber.

To achieve the honor, a student must carry a minimum of 12 credit hours and a grade point average of 3.5 or above per semester. Of the 1,854 students on cam-pus for the 2014-2015 academic year, 528 made the Dean’s List.

Magazine features High Wire Ranch


High Wire Ranch in Hotchkiss is featured in the February issue of Cowboys and Indi-ans magazine. A writer stopped by a farmers market and the ranch, and liked the elk prod-ucts they sampled. The result was being featured in an article about elk in Colorado.

High Wire Ranch own-ers Dave and Sue Whit-tlesey have been raising elk since 1987 and buf-falo since 1981.

“We get a lot of writers looking for stories,” Sue said.

Learning about EMTsThe BELA preschoolers at Hotchkiss K-8 have been learning about people in their community. The North Fork Ambulance Association came to visit the classroom to answer questions. Then the kids were allowed in the ambulance where they could ask more questions and try out some of the equipment. They could learn about the help that is given, and not be afraid if they ever need the ambulance. The February exhibit at the Creamery Arts Center in Hotchkiss will feature Cedaredge artist Barbara Torke and her students. Lilly Middleton will also be showcasing her artwork in February. There will be a “meet the artists” reception on the evening of Feb. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. This exhibit will be on display until March 9.

Torke has been instructing her students/friends of the Cedars Edge Gallery in the fine art of painting and drawing in preparation for this spe-cial show. Cedars Edge Gallery painters use pas-tel, oil and pencil draw-ing to express their cre-ativity in their own style and direction. Members of this exhibit include Barbara Allen, Amy Daniels, Pat de l’Etoile, Linda Palmer, Barbara Silverman and Carol Ann Rasmussen. Along with Barbara Torke, these talented artists pres-ent paintings and draw-ings inspired by their own artistic journey and discovery. All have been Cedaredge and Hotchkiss residents for many years and their knowledge of this area, and places they have visited, plus their skill with figure and form, make this an exhib-it of exceptional variety and beauty.

Lilly Middleton grew up in a home where art supplies were in abun-dance, so becoming an

artist was not a surprise. Her favorite medium is colored pencil, which she began working with four years ago. Middleton is a prolific artist who has taken “After School Art” classes at the Creamery Arts Center for many years. She has studied with local artists Suki Strong and Rosemary Ranck. Middleton lives in Hotchkiss and has been homeschooled her whole life.

Experience the Wine and Cheese Extravaganza

The Hotchkiss-Crawford Historical Soci-ety will have its annual meeting on Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Hotchkiss Memorial Hall, starting at 2 p.m. The meeting will offer the opportunity to renew your member-ship or join the historical society.

This year’s program will be presented by Montrose archaeologist Carol Patterson, Ph.D., who will speak about the rock art that was cre-ated by the ancestral Ute Indians. She will focus on the Ute rock art “Maps” on the Uncompahgre Pla-teau, particularly in the Gunnison Gorge Nation-al Conservation Area and the Dominguez-Escalante

Conservation Area. With consultants of the north-ern Ute tribes, she has identified petroglyphs that may represent maps of aboriginal trails and hunting areas. Some of these “maps” are believed to have been created in the years 1400 to 1900, while some other archaic rock art is much older.

The presentation will

include a slide show of rock art sites in west-ern Colorado. Patterson was a Bureau of Land Management archaeolo-gist, an interpretive trail guide, and has published books, journal articles and many reports on Native American rock art and Ute ethnography.

Eddie Cambria, a Hotchkiss High School senior, has been award-ed a full, four-year Presi-dential Scholarship from Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. Cam-bria will major in Crimi-nal Justice.

Cambria is ranked number one in his senior class at Hotchkiss High School. He qualified for the non-resident Presidential Scholar-ship with his combined score for the ACT and a 4.0 grade point aver-age.

The Cedaredge Lady Bruins, with their big 60-48 win over visiting Meeker on Saturday, upped their season mark to 14-0 overall and 7-0 in 2A WSL play. The Bruins are ranked sec-ond in Class 2A behind last week’s leader, Hoeh-ne, which owns an 11-0 league mark and a 14-0 overall record.

The Lady Cowboys, 9-3 overall and 5-2 league,

had been rolling along in second place but fell to third behind Soroco (13-2, 6-1) after the weekend loss in Cedaredge.

Both Meeker and Cedaredge use a fast-paced game to disrupt their opponents’ offensive rhythm and score points on turnovers. Both teams had trouble establishing an offense that could gain momentum in the first half. Cedaredge’s offense prevailed, 13-8, in the first period.

Cedaredge led 28-21 at halftime and outscored the Cowboys 32-27 in the second half on its way to a win.

Meeker senior Syd-ney Hughes was the workhorse for the Lady Cowboys. The talented playmaker finished with 22 points after scoring at least four points in each quarter of the game. Hughes averaged 4.5 points as a freshman and steadily progressed to a 20.8 average as a senior.

She sits atop the scor-ing leaderboard, in the 2A WSL and Class 2A, with that 20.8, is first in assists with 3.3 per game and is first in the league, and state 2A play, with 7.9 steals per game.

The Lady Bruins effec-tively limited Meeker’s productivity with their double-teaming pressure defense. Hughes was the only Lady Cowboy in dou-ble figures for the game.

Cedaredge’s Nel-lie Freeman provided a spark on both offense and defense. The stel-lar junior athlete was involved in numerous defensive plays, along with fellow teammate Kendall McHugh, where one or the other stole the ball or caused a turn-over.

Freeman was Cedar-edge’s leading scorer with a team-high 22 points. Hannah Gilmore was also a double-figure scor-er with 12 points for the Bruins.

Cedaredge’s Lady Bru-ins are at Rangely on Fri-day of this week for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

A Saturday rematch with Paonia is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start in Paonia.

The Lady Bulldogs were hoping to break their four-game losing streak in Friday’s conference game against Plateau Valley, and they came oh so close in a back-and-forth battle that found both teams battling for the win in the final seconds.

“We played with heart and we just had fun,” said Hotchkiss point guard Mae Anderson after the 49-45 loss. “It all started to come together in this game.”

Plateau Valley (7-4, 4-3), which leads the Class 1A teams in the 2A/1A Western Slope (Grand Mesa) league, was hungry for a win after dropping out of the top 10 in state standings last week fol-lowing losses to Meeker, Paonia and Cedaredge.

With four players over 5-foot-10, the Lady Cowboys had the height advantage, but had a hard time stopping senior center Katie Richards, who battled in the paint to score six goals and a team-high 13 points.

The plan going in, said head coach Eric Hollem-beak, was to force the Cow-boys to shoot the threes. Instead, they punctured Hotchkiss’ quick defense to score 18 of 19 first-half points on goals.

The Dogs trailed by four at halftime.

Hotchkiss forced turn-overs and scored five unanswered points to take the lead early in the second half. The Cowboys answered with a goal, and Aleksus Wilson scored from the 3-line to put Hotchkiss ahead, 26-23. Hotchkiss forced a turn-over and Wilson drove the lane for two and pushed the lead to five.

Plateau Valley chis-eled away at the lead and Sierra Reynolds scored two of her game-high 17 points from the perimeter to bring the Panthers to within one point heading into the final period.

The two teams exchanged the lead seven times in the fourth. Reyn-olds was fouled and sank both shots for a two-point Cowboy lead.

Plateau Valley forced a turnover on the inbounds pass and scored inside to increase the lead to four.

Anderson answered with a trey. The Cowboys again put up a goal, and Richards scored the last of her three goals for the period to tie the game at 45-45 with under two minutes remaining.

At that point, said Anderson, Hollembeak told his team to press, and put in his quickest players — Ariel Duncan, Tiffany Clock, Kayli Tall-ent, Anderson, and fresh-man point guard Andi Todd.

The defense kept the Cowboys from scoring a goal, but the Cowboys drew the fouls and shot four points from the line for the win.

“Our girls played great, their girls played great,” said Hollembeak. “It was fun. I just wish we would have scored five more points.”

Wilson scored nine points for the game and Duncan added seven. Both players scored all their points in the second half. Anderson ended the game with two treys, and Clock, Lacey Rodriguez and Tallent combined for 10 points.

Facing 6-foot players and receiving an assign-ment at the end of a close game “was quite an honor,” said Todd, the only freshman on the varsity squad, who gave credit to her teammates for taking her in and accepting her on the team. “I think we played hard and we put out a lot of effort.”

“We felt like we did a good job,” said Anderson, “but a win would have been nice. We really need one.”

The Lady Bulldogs host the second of two games against Caprock Acad-emy (1-11, 1-8) Friday at 6 p.m. Hotchkiss faces Rangely (3-8, 2-5, 2A/1A WSL) Saturday afternoon for a game beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The Paonia wrestling team upped its dual record to 19-2 with two wins Friday at the Kourt-ney Lake Duals at Center High School. The No. 1-ranked Eagles wrestled to a 49-22 win over No. 6 Swink, and defeated No. 4 Rocky Ford, 47-21.

In its final tourna-ment of the regular sea-son, Paonia placed 12 wrestlers and scored 217 points to win the 19-team Varsity Classic tourna-ment, also held at Cen-ter. All of the competing teams but Salida, which placed 11th, are in Class 2A.

The Eagles sent six into the title round and

won four championships, including Colton Godwin at 106 pounds, Jesse Reed (126), Bo Pipher (138), and No. 2-ranked senior Zach Milner, who won the 160-pound championship match by a 7-3 decision over No. 3 James Rich-ardson of Centauri.

Josh Altman (132, 32-5) and Logan Schopp (182, 29-8) brought home silver. Clay Camp-bell (113, 18-7), a No. 8-ranked freshman, upset No. 7 Justin Hinkle of Fowler to finish third.

Trevor Smith (29-7) placed fourth at 195 pounds, Gunnar Chesnik (145, 35-6) and Jacob Griffin (152, 14-8) placed fifth, and Eli Etter (JV - 1-6, 7-11) and Nick Brewer

(160, 15-22) placed sixth. Freshman 170-pounder Jayden Miller (21-14) fin-ished the day at 2-2.

Pipher (36-0) was voted outstanding wres-tler in the lower weights by team coaches. Pipher was also voted outstand-ing wrestler by coaches at the Jan. 24 Screaming Eagle tournament.

Paonia will wrestle its final dual against Delta, also 19-2, this Thursday at 6 p.m., at Paonia High School. The Class 3A Panthers are ranked No. 4 by On the Mat.

“I think it’s going to be a really good dual,” said head coach Andy Pipher. “I’m hoping for a really good turnout.”

Delta High School’s wrestling program is enjoying one of its best seasons in the past few years. The Panthers have been dominant on the mat, and until this past week were stacking up wins left and right. Last Friday night, in Delta,

the Palisade Bulldogs pulled off an upset of sorts when they defeated Delta 42-40. The loss is just the second of the sea-son in dual competition for Delta.

120. David Brown (126), Roberts (132), Staats (138), Daryan Urquhart (145), Chance Dillingham (152) and Mills (170) all had wins for Delta.

The Panthers are fourth in Class 3A rank-ings and have several wrestlers in the top 10. Garcia’s the top rated Panther, with a num-ber-one ranking at 285. Derek Horn is third at 160, Anderson fourth at 106, Mills fifth at 170, David Brown (126) and Medina (195) are seventh with Daryan Urquhart (152) and Daniel Brown

settling in at eighth at 182. Chynoweth (120) and Santander (220) are also top-10 wrestlers for the Panthers.

Roberts is in the top 20 at 138.

Delta’s wrestling schedule shows the Pan-thers ending their regular season with a final match against 2A powerhouse Paonia on Thursday, Feb. 5, with matches set to begin (JV) at 6 p.m.

Teams will begin their quest for state berths next week with regional competition set for Feb. 13 and 14.

The Paonia basketball teams took advantage of last week’s light sched-ule to hone their skills before heading into the final weeks of league action ahead of district playoffs, which open Feb. 24.

The Lady Eagles (9-4, 4-2, 2A/1A Western Slope, Grand Mesa, league) mostly played the bench in their Jan. 29, 49-8 win over Caprock Academy. Paonia outscored Cap-rock, 36-0, in the first half.

This is the first year Caprock (1-11, 1-8), a public K-12 charter school located in Grand Junc-tion, has fielded a bas-

ketball team. The Lady Eagles’ roster includes one senior, five juniors and seven freshmen for their inaugural season.

Paonia faces a tough schedule this week, start-ing Friday with its second conference game against Meeker. The Lady Eagles lost by seven points at Meeker on Jan. 10.

Paonia had 23 turn-overs and 26 personal fouls in the loss, allowing Meeker to score 25 points from the line — a loss head coach Scott Rienks owed to throwing the ball away. “At Meeker that killed us,” said Rienks after Paonia’s Jan. 16 win over Rangely.

Meeker (9-3, 5-2) is now in third place in

WSL standings after los-ing Saturday to undefeat-ed Cedaredge, the team Paonia faces Saturday. That game will also be

played at Paonia. The Lady Eagles will be on the road for the remain-der of the regular sea-son.

Another split in 4A WSL basketball games has kept Delta’s Lady Panthers needing to make a push for more consistency as the final few games loom ahead.

Delta is fifth in a tough conference with a 4-6 WSL mark and a 7-8 overall record.

This past week, the Lady Panthers opened the week with a 53-42 loss to league-leading Palisade (8-0, 12-2). On Saturday, Delta played hard and was rewarded with a 58-28 win over Battle Moun-tain (3-6, 5-10).Palisade 53, Delta 42

The visiting Bulldogs were up six at the end of one quarter of play and

led by 10, 25-15, at the break. Christa Brown sparked the play of Pal-isade with 12 first-half points.

Abby Thiessen picked up the slack to begin sec-ond-half play with seven points in a 16-10 third quarter for the Bulldogs.

Delta got some rhythm going in the final stan-za and managed to out-

score Palisade 17-12 to make the final score 53-42. Emily Baier provided the firepower for Delta with seven points in the period.

Free-throw shooting continues to be a seri-ous discrepancy in Del-ta’s offensive efforts. The Panthers were good on just eight of 17 shots from the charity stripe.

Palisade wasn’t much better as it turned in a 10-of-22 effort at the line.

Baier had 13 points for Delta and Christa Brown scored the same number of counters for Palisade to share game-high hon-ors. Aspen Guray chipped in 11 for Palisade giving the Bulldogs two players in double figures.

Delta got off to one of its better starts of the sea-son and used the scoring of Rachel Huerkamp and Lily Lockhart to take a lead to the second quar-ter. Huerkamp knocked down six points and Lock-hart another four, all free throws, to provide the Panthers with their nar-row lead.

The Paonia boys’ bas-ketball team upped its winning streak to five with a 48-27 home win over Caprock (4-7, 1-4) last Thursday.

Eagles sophomore Dagan Rienks scored a game-high 17 points, and Colby Simpson scored 12, including two 3-pointers.

Caprock seniors Victor Gebbie and Justin Dol-lar led Caprock in scoring with eight points each. Gebbie also made seven of Caprock’s 16 steals for the game.

The Eagles faced rival Hotchkiss (8-5, 4-2) Tues-day night (see results in the Feb. 11 issue of the Delta County Indepen-dent).

Paonia is now 11-2, 5-1 and ended the week in second place in the 2A/1A Western Slope (Grand Mesa) league. It hosts No. 1 Meeker (12-0, 7-0) this Friday. The Eagles will seek to redeem their Jan. 10, 67-49 loss to the Cowboys.

On Saturday Paonia hosts Cedaredge (4-2, 2-4) at 4 p.m. In a game that saw a total of 19 first-half points scored, Paonia defeated Cedaredge 43-36 on Jan. 23.

Following Saturday’s game, Paonia will be on the road for the remain-der of the regular sea-son.

The six varsity basket-ball players who made the trip from Plateau Valley to Hotchkiss last Friday gave it all they had, but they couldn’t make up for their missing teammates, and headed home with an 82-27 loss.

The Cowboys, who averaged 42 points per game coming into the match, were missing more than half of their roster, including two starters and one bench player, due to suspension, according to Panthers’ head coach Mike Vig.

“It’s a tough lesson for these kids,” said Coach Vig after the loss.

The Bulldogs scored 48 second-half points and had five players shoot double-digit scores. Cesar Gonzalez led the Bull-dogs with a game-high 16 points, and Andrew Tiedeman, Zach Allen and Eddie Cambria each scored 13. Jaden Simp-son added 11 points. Wes Hardin added seven, and sophomore Blake Bayless came off the bench in the fourth period to score five points and shoot 3-for-5 from the line.

Hotchkiss took seven of its 14 trips to the line in the second half and shot 19-for-26 for the game.

Sophomore Jesse Klinger led the Cowboys with 11 points. Alex Cox, Joey Shrope, Markayle Iranfar and Joseph Hea-ton combined for the

remaining 16 points. The Bulldogs are now

8-5 overall, 4-2 in the 2A/1A Western Slope League. They faced rival Paonia Tuesday night. The Bulldogs host Cap-rock Academy (4-7), a

Lockhart’s 17 points topped all scorers in the game. Dylan Barker scored eight points to lead Battle Mountain’s offense.

Delta played Rifle on Tuesday, Feb. 3, and is scheduled to face the Lady Sailors in Steam-boat Springs this Satur-day. Game time for the Lady Panthers is set for 2:30 p.m.

Delta is on the road to Basalt for a 5:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday of next week.

A Palisade 58-45 win last Tuesday was fol-lowed by a 70-58 loss in Edwards to Battle Moun-tain. Eian Baier scored 19 points against the Bulldogs and poured in 24 counters in the loss to the Huskies.Palisade 58, Delta 45

First-half play was close, with the Bulldogs winning the first quar-ter 12-11 with Ian Shier-land scoring six of the 12 points. Baier scored seven of the Panthers’ 11 points, keeping Delta close.

There wasn’t much difference in the style of play in the second period with Palisade gaining another two points for a 27-24 halftime lead.

The two teams played evenly in the third quar-ter with Delta shaving one point from the Bull-

dogs’ lead.Palisade took con-

trol of the game in the final stanza with a 21-12 advantage.

Baier’s 19 points led all scorers in the game, with Beau Byers adding 14 points. Palisade’s Shi-erland finished with 17 points and Quincy Camp-bell contributed another 10 to lead the Bulldogs’ offense.

nine 3-pointers in this contest and managed to pull away in the fourth quarter to score a 12-point victory.

Delta led 20-17 after one period of action. Beau Byers had two 3-pointers for six points and Jas-par Carmichael had five points. Owen Riley was hot to begin the game and scored 13 points, including three treys, in the period.

Baier’s six points in the second quarter weren’t enough as Battle Mountain got six points on a pair of threes from

Fabian Chavira as the Huskies outscored Delta 14-10 to take a 31-30 halftime lead to their locker room.

Battle Mountain was one better than the Pan-thers in third-quarter action on the strength of Chavira’s seven points. Baier countered with nine points for Delta in the period.

A 23-13 run by Battle Mountain in the fourth quarter doomed the Pan-thers’ chances of a come-back.

Baier’s 24 points were the game’s top point production, with Carmi-chael chipping in 13 for the Panthers. Riley and Chavira combined for 42 points in the win, with both players scoring 21 points.

The Panther boys are in Steamboat Springs this Saturday (Feb. 7) at 4 p.m.

On Tuesday of next week the Panthers will be in Basalt for a 7 p.m. tipoff with the Long-horns.

Meeker’s Cade Rowlett scored five points to pace the Cowboys in a 9-6 first-quarter edge. Cedaredge bounced back with a 13-point second quarter to tie the game at 19 by halftime.

Ty Dunham collected 10 points in the first half for Meeker and Christian Reynolds had six points to lead the Bruins offense in first-half play.

Meeker moved in front of the Bruins, 33-30, with help from Dunham’s eight points in the third quar-ter during a 14-11 run.

Cedaredge was held to nine points in the final quarter as the Cowboys put together an 18-9 run to make the final score 51-39.

Dunham and Rowlett scored 24 and 12 points respectively to pace Meeker’s offense. The Bruins had two players,

Tyler Cooper and Chris-tian Reynolds, who fin-ished the game with 11 points each.

Meyers for three quar-ters. Meyers suffered an injury with concussion-like symptoms in the first quarter of play and did not return to the game.

In the second round,

Wyatt Ashby (138) deci-sioned Bloomfield’s Adrian Vigil 10-4 while Colton Hoerr (145) suf-fered a 15-0 technical fall loss to Bayfield’s Colter McMenimen.

Cedaredge’s Blake Gash (113) lost by pinfall and Colton Coe by forfeit in round-three action.

Preliminary bouts are set for 5 p.m. with varsity action set for 6 p.m.

The three highest-ranked wrestlers from Olathe scored wins last Thursday in the Pirates’ non-league 36-25 dual win at Hotchkiss.

Colton Deluzio opened at 132 pounds with a win for Hotchkiss, defeating Rosa Garcia by an 11-2 major decision.

Olathe won the next three matches to take a 17-4 lead. At 138, senior Trent Rose, ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A, won by a 15-0 technical fall over Mitch McCurdy. No. 4-ranked senior Austin Shank followed with a first-round pin (1:53) over Bulldog freshman Colton Peebles, and at 152, No. 3 Jacob Jiminez pinned JV freshman Kevin Chavez in 1:10 to give Olathe a 17-4 lead.

At 160, Wade Katzdorn, ranked sixth, won by a 7-3 decision over Caleb Jolley, ranked fifth. Olathe won the next three matches for a 30-10 lead. At 170, John Needham defeated Parker Katzdorn by a 9-1 decision, Jorge Quin-tero outwrestled Dun-can Turnbull, 8-6, and Chayden Harris, ranked second for Olathe at 195 pounds, pinned Bulldog Devin Curtis in 1:40.

At 220, Tristen Todd defeated Pirate Felix Pena, 6-3, and sophomore Conner Collins controlled the heavyweight match over Pirates senior Lance Kramer for a 4-0 win.

At 106, Colton Cor-dova went three rounds for a 9-2 loss to Andrew Godfrey (21-8), ranked

fifth in state. Cody Need-ham had the last win for Olathe with a 13-7 win over Chris Lovato at 113.

Bulldogs Chase Hiatt (113) and Colton Hall (126) won by forfeit.

Two of the Bulldogs’ top-ranked wrestlers, Austin Todd (132, 20-2) and Kale Litzelman (145-152, 18-4) were unable to compete due to injuries.

On Saturday the Bull-dogs placed seven wres-tlers and scored 114 points to place sixth at the 19-team Valley Clas-sic tournament at Center. Three ranked wrestlers, including Todd, Litzel-man, and Colton Hall (120), were out with inju-ries.

At 106 pounds, Colton Cordova was one of three Bulldogs to place third. Wade Katzdorn (17-7), ranked fifth at 170 pounds, lost in semifi-nals to Zach Milner of Paonia and wrestled back to third place; and eighth-ranked Tristen Todd (220, 17-7) lost by 3 points in quarterfinals to No. 10 Nicholas Steven-son of Rye and wrestled back to the finals, pin-ning Stevenson in 1:00 to place third.

Mitch McCurdy (138, 15-8) and Connor Collins (285, 16-8) placed fourth, Chris Lovato placed fifth at 113, and Colton Deluzio placed sixth.

Hotchkiss will compete this Saturday at the Nor-wood/Nucla Invitational. This is the final competi-tion ahead of the regional tournament, which opens Feb. 13 at Colorado Mesa University.

Event benefits the Cedaredge animal shelter

After watching the mush-ers at Mesa Top or wetting a hook in the ice fishing con-test, there will be lots of good, warming food available at the Cedaredge Community Cen-ter with the “Crockpots for Critters” animal shelter fund-raiser.

The event, from 4:30 to 7 p.m., is a benefit for the Sur-face Creek Animal Shelter and is sponsored by the Friends of Cedaredge Animal Control.

Last year’s inaugural fund-raising event was held at the Stolte Shed. It was such a resounding success that this year’s dinner has been moved to the more spacious Cedaredge Community Center.

Lynn Sorlye is manager of the Shelter Shoppe and coordi-nator of the fundraising event. She recalls how surprised organizers were last year when so many more people than expected came. “We had over 300 people,” she recalls.

Fortunately, a lot of those folks unexpectedly brought their own crocks of food to donate to the event and so everyone got to have a good meal.

It would be a big help, Sor-lye said, if everyone who plans to being a crockery pot this year would call her in advance and let her know. It would help streamline planning for the event. Her phone number is 261-6723.

Sorlye is also the one to call if individuals or business-es want to donate items for the silent auction or the prize

drawings.The cost is $5 per ticket.

Advance tickets are avail-able at the Shelter Shoppe and they will be available at the door also. Kids under five years old can eat free.

Bringing a donated item of pet food or cat litter will enter guests into a fun prize drawing. Bags of Purina One dry cat or kitten food, Pedi-gree dry dog food, or Tidy Cat non-clumping litter will get a ticket for the prize drawing. The specific food brands are requested to avoid difficulties caused by changing the diets of shelter animals. A nice box or bag of dog treats donated will also get an entry in the prize drawing.

There will also be a silent auction.

Warm up after busy Saturday at Crock-pots for Critters


Participants in the Cham-ber of Commerce ice fish-ing contest this Saturday at Island Lake will have some extra excitement in store.

Organizers report they are planning to offer a special cash prize, hopefully a big one, for anyone who catches a new state record splake during the event.

According to an online authority, splake are a non-reproducing hybrid of brook trout and lake trout.

The current state record for splake was set in 1976 at Island Lake by a Cedaredge school girl, Robin Perkins, who was on a fishing outing with her parents.

The state record catch is

on display at Leisure Time Sports in Cedaredge. The fish is mounted on a hand painted background scene of Island Lake painted by Delta artist and muralist Dick Doherty.

The record splake on dis-play in Cedaredge is accom-panied by an engraving that states the animal when caught weighed in at just one ounce shy of 20 pounds. The state record book has it as one ounce shy of 19 pounds.

Though the state record for splake is 39 years old, there are still big splake lurking in the lakes of Grand Mesa. A video currently available online is titled as showing a fisherman landing a 13-pound splake from the shore of a lake on Grand Mesa in 2013.

Mid-winter blastAnticipation and hope have gained traction for the Feb. 7 ice fishing and sled dog racing events at Island Lake and Mesa Top. Last weekend’s storm added eight inches of new snow atop Grand Mesa, according to a report from Grand Mesa Lodge. Ice was reported to be 20 to 22 inches thick at Island Lake as of Sunday.

Local sponsors of the annual Grand Mesa Summit Chal-lenge sled dog races set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 7 and 8, at Mesa Top were happy to see stormy weather on the Grand Mesa. Snow conditions have improved markedly for the races which are expected to begin on schedule at 8:30 a.m. the first day.

Last weekend’s storms brought eight inches of new snow to the Grand Mesa’s high-lands, according to a report from Grand Mesa Lodge. The race courses are being groomed ahead of the race events.

Two days of the annual Grand Mesa Summit Chal-lenge sled dog races are sched-uled for Feb. 7 and 8. A $3,000 total purse is being offered to racers.

This will be the ninth annual event taking place once again at the spacious Mesa Top area located on Highway 65 between County Line and the Land’s End Road turnoff.

The event is sponsored by

the Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club. Racers will be coming from across the nation to com-pete. Many will be coming from the Pagosa Springs race event held two weekends before the Grand Mesa Summit Chal-lenge.

Spectators will be able to view ISDRA-sanctioned four-, six-, and eight-dog sprints, four- and six-dog purebred sprint, two-dog and one-dog skijor. There will also be a three-dog junior class, non-sanctioned three- and four-dog sportsman sled, and one- and two-dog ski-jor classes. The actual race-day lineup of events depends on the participants who enter each race class.

The starting order for races is as follows:

Eight-dog sprint class start-ing at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, followed by six-dog sprint class, two-dog skijor, four-dog sprint class, one-dog skijor, three-dog junior, three- and four-dog sportsman, and then the non-sanctioned events.

Snow is good for sled dog race

At Island Lake on Satur-day, Feb. 7, the annual Ice Fishing Contest sponsored by the Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce will begin with registration at Grand Mesa Lodge (Island Lake) at 8 a.m.

Registration before Feb. 4 is $25, and after that date is $30. Contestants may pre-reg-ister at Leisure Time Sports, at the chamber office, or download a form at the cham-ber website and send it in, Carol Jarbo, event organizer, explained.

There will also be registra-tion the day of the contest beginning at 8 a.m. at the Grand Mesa Lodge on Island Lake.

Fishing begins at 9 a.m.This event is growing

rapidly in popularity, noted Jarbo of the Creekside Bed and Breakfast. It has doubled in size since its first edition in 2013.

The winning trout will be measured by a combined length and girth measure-ment. In the event of a tie, the contestant first registered to compete will be the winner, organizers said.

According to organizers, cash prizes will be $200 for first, $150 second, and $100 third, and also gift certifi-cates. There will be both adult and youth categories.

Last weekend’s report from Island Lake indicated 20 or more inches of ice. Eight inch-es of new snow fell from the storm last weekend.

Ice fishing contest set for Saturday


A big real estate transac-tion in Cedaredge reclaimed close to 100 Cedaredge res-idential building lots from foreclosure where they had been since 2012, and the deal has driven residential lot val-ues to remarkable new mar-ket lows.

Cedaredge 1 LLC, an entity controlled by inves-tor/developer John Peters of Ridgway, concluded sev-eral purchases in December. According to records at the county clerk and recorder’s office, in one transaction Cedaredge 1 LLC bought 47 lots of Stonebridge at Deer Creek Villages filings #3, #4, #5 and #6 for $257,627; an average price of $5,481 per lot. The transaction also

included “a parcel known as future filing #7.”

Also according to the coun-

ty clerk’s records, a second transaction, concluded at the same time as the first one, transferred an additional 44 lots of the Stonebridge at Deer Creek Villages subdivi-sion filings #3, #4 and #5. Total price was $288,265, according to county filings, and the package also includ-ed a parcel knows as “future filing #7.” Records show that the second transaction included the office/clubhouse at 855 Stonebridge Drive which alone is valued at over $222,000 on the county assessor’s records.

A third transaction was part of the deal, according to county records. A price of $146,112 was paid for a 122-acre parcel located east of the golf course front nine hous-ing development. Assessors’s records show the 122 acres sold in 2007 for $1.38 million and that the parcel had gone into foreclosure in 2012 with other property involved in the December transactions.

Garden club planning lots of fun in 2015


The AppleShed is known for doing a lot of different things well.

One of the local busi-ness’ signature benefits to the community is the emotional uplift it pro-vides for people who stop in for a bit of coffee or wine while they browse the rooms full of art and decor or just visit with friends and family.

This Friday, Feb. 6, the AppleShed will host an event sure to provide a cure to any mid-winter blahs that have crept into the valley. Beginning at 7 p.m., musician Nathan McEuen will be at the AppleShed for a concert featuring his own unique style of “Americana” music including plenty of

spirit-lifting, lively, expert banjo picking.

McEuen describes his mix of musical offer-ings as “including some folk, rock, bluegrass, and country,” he told the DCI during an interview last week. On his website, he describes his “Ameri-cana” music as “too rock for country; too country for rock; too funk for folk; too green for bluegrass.”

McEuen will be play-ing original numbers from his new album “Side by Side.” He will also per-form some popular favor-ites along with his own original compositions.

“Since 2005, Nathan has written and produced six full-length CDs under his own label,” according to his website.

There are six new banjo instrumental numbers on the new album promising a rousing evening of great banjo picking.

McEuen estimates that he has played in this area probably a dozen times over the past 15 years. Some of those performances were with his own band, and oth-

ers were along with his famous dad, John; but the younger McEuen is no stranger to solo perfor-mances here as well.

“It will be good to get back to Colorado. It feels like home,” he said, noting that he is a native of the state. He grew up in what is now the I-70 corridor west of Denver between Evergreen and Silver-thorne, as he describes it. “I’m excited to get back, hand out, and share the new music.”

McEuen plays the banjo and also the gui-tar. Nathan’s banjo-picking virtuoso father, John, has also played to packed audiences at the AppleShed.

One of the songs that Nathan’s local audiences have especially enjoyed in past performances has been his composi-tion “Grand Design.” It is about a musician who is feeling down and out because his music isn’t winning any awards — like a Grammy.

Ironically, Nathan performed the number a few yeas ago here at an

AppleShed concert right before his dad was pre-sented with an actual Grammy by the statu-ette’s makers who live in Ridgway.

Concert producer David Starr will join McEuen for part of the show, and there are likely to be some other musical guests whom local music fans will recognize join-ing Nathan on the stage.

Starr said of the con-cert, “Nathan’s been doing some really great stuff with appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and other major venues of late.”

The concert will be preceded by a social hour at the AppleShed and the wine and cider tasting room will be open prior to the show.

Doors open at 6 p.m.; show time is at 7 p.m.. All tickets are general admis-sion: $15 in advance, $17 at the door.

The Methodist Com-munity Thrift Store will celebrate its move to a new larger loca-tion at 205 W. Main in Cedaredge Friday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Thrift Store, which began in the basement of the Methodist Church several years ago, had

outgrown its former loca-tion and moved uptown to the old Sunset Print-ing building. When the adjoining travel agency closed, the thrift store took over that space to create a gift store and space for good, used fur-niture. The volunteers are working hard to create an unusual and distinctive look in this

space.The front of the store

is filled with winter clothing and shoes for the whole family from newborns to 4x men’s and women’s sizes. The thrift store receives new jewelry regularly, which is displayed with the “old” jewelry donated by patrons. Free gift wrap-ping is available along with cards for any occa-sion.

White-winged DoveI always check out

the “10,000 birds” blog on the Internet. I find bird observations from all parts of the world, so it’s an enjoyable part of my day. On Nov. 16, 2014, there was a report of a white-winged dove — Cable Beach in New York! Out of its south-western range! And my mind raced back to a marvelous southwest-ern experience. I’d had an invitation from my botanist friend, Marian, who lived in Green Val-ley near Phoenix, Ariz. Would I like to come down for birds and plants in February? And of course I accepted!

I was standing at the kitchen window to watch the bird feeders and there was an all red, male northern cardinal with his brownish mate. Out from the cactus

hedge came another car-dinal? No, wrong color! I checked the field guide and found the newcomer to be a male pyrrhuloxia … with a cardinal-like crest but paler plum-age. A “life bird” for me and we’ve not even had breakfast!

Wait … behind the cholla cactus … a medi-um-sized bird … about the size of the mourning dove that I know from home. It walked toward

the feeder … mincing little steps, like a pigeon. It was brownish with a conspicuous white band along the wing’s edge. A white-winged dove! Another “life bird” for me! It fluttered up to a tree stump just in front of the ’dobe wall — a perfect background for my south-western native dove. Mar-ian and her husband Rip have maintained a desert landscape in their yard and the desert creatures seem to be happy with it.

My dove had a dark spot beneath the red eye, a bit of white along the tail, and of course the bright white edge along the wing. Hence, “white-winged dove” as a com-mon name. The mourn-ing dove and the white-winged dove are in the same genus of Zenaida (in honor of the wife of Prince Charles Bonapar-te, the ornithologist). But

the full name of the white-winged is Zenaida asiati-ca, an old term meaning “of Asia.” Oops! But the bird doesn’t seem to be of Asia! Another research in order!

This dove seems to follow the behavior pat-terns of other doves but it has been little studied. It’s a bit smaller than the mourning dove. The call is a series “coo” with the last “coo” a bit lower. Once you’ve heard it, the call is easy to recognize.

Last fall my bird-ing buddy, Karen Der-rick, had one appear at her feeders in Palisade, just outside of Grand Junction. And then it appeared in New York state. Poor navigator? More people watching? Global warming? My bet is “all of the above.” But the white-winged dove has provided a lovely memory for me.

As set out in the bylaws of the Cedaredge Community Gardens Association, the annual meeting has been sched-uled for Saturday, Feb. 7, at 9 a.m. at the Creekside Restaurant.

Election of officers, a treasurer’s report and updates on grants and grant applications will be

covered as well as bylaw changes. The public is encouraged to attend.

Plots and container gardens are available for planting. Those inter-ested in gardening with this group are welcome to join at the meeting.

The New Year is a way to establish a fresh start and to place all of the previous year into the past. Students and teachers make resolu-tions and celebrate as the New Year rings in. At midnight, everyone

gathered together to pay tribute to 2014’s memories, and to celebrate the ones to come in 2015. Emilee Isa-man anxiously waited for the New Year with family, “This year I want to get good grades, and so far I have accomplished that.”Some do not stay up all

night to wait for the New Year. Mr. Parsons says, “On New Years Eve I celebrated Christmas with my wife’s

family, and I was in bed by 8:30.” Hannah Hatheway also went to bed before midnight struck. “I fell asleep around nine, but I did make a resolution. I want to stay positive and do things that make me happy this year.” As 2015 begins, seniors

For students, early release days are great. The school schedule remains the same except every class is short-ened. Classes last about a half an hour long, and for most teachers this isn’t enough time to complete their les-son. On these days students usually end up doing little work and then have half the day off. On Wednesday, the 21st of January, CHS had an early release day. Unlike any early release, CHS tried a

completely different approach. Instead of a regular schedule, CHS conducted a school-wide experiment. Throughout the course of the half-

day, every student attended an hour session of Math, Science, English and History. These hour sessions were all centralized around the same topic: infectious disease.

In the science portion, students each received hydro-chloric acid, which represented their “body fluids”. Students exchanged the acid with others multiple times throughout the experiment.After exchanging, the students used an indicating

fluid to determine if they caught the disease. If the fluid turned red, they were healthy, and if it were blue they were sick. In this session 70-80% of students contracted the disease. In the math session, a similar test was literally ran.

Students played “Line Tag” in the gym. In this, one student started with the virus, and he attempted to infect everyone else by tagging them. Results for this were similar to the science experiment.The data from the tag experiment was used to ob-

serve the spread and growth rate of the disease. They

observed this by graphing the data with multiple equations and choosing the one that fit the real life example the best. In English, students learned how to write an “ab-

stract” to fill a requirement which would either count as a grade or as extra credit for their English class.Lastly, in history students learned the history of

many diseases and how advanced transportation has increased the threat of infectious diseases.In today’s world infectious diseases present a ma-

jor threat to society. Without proper care one man’s disease can kill millions due to airplanes and other ad-vanced transportation. Sometimes a change in every-day schooling helps students refocus. This experiment implemented fun and informative activities for all students and made good use of an early release day.

In years previous, the Cedaredge girls basketball program has been successful. This year, however, they managed to find a new gear. UndefeatedThe girls’ basketball team holds

a 14-0 overall record and is 7-0 in league. This ranks them first in the 2A/1A Western Slope League. Nellie Freeman, a starting guard, has an average of 10.4 points per game, and 2.7 steals per game. Along with Nellie, Kristin Gard-ner averages 7.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. The team is headed toward state and eager to reach that goal.Mackenzie Kehemeier and Bree

Gutierrez say, “ We are proud to be undefeated, but we just focus on the game ahead of us.” With the focus on the upcoming games, the team eagerly awaits their next

opponents, but they don’t forget to have fun in the process. “It’s been fun and exciting,” Sierra Baldozier puts simply.With five more games left in the

regular season, the Lady Bruins look to continue to make a state-ment. Being on top is hard to maintain. Other teams put a target on their back because they are on top. Other teams give extra effort to knock off the best, but so far the Bruins have managed to hold the throne. The junior varsity is also unde-

feated, and in the middle of a very successful season. They continue to improve, and have a bright season ahead of them. The entire girls’ basketball team

is full of enthusiastic girls and dedicated athletes. They are great teammates, and are a force to be reckoned with.

Cedaredge Bruin Boys Basketball has enjoyed a challenging and exciting season this year. They have met challenges head-on, and they have man-aged to maintain that all-important idea of “team.”Junior Tyler Cooper is leading this season with the most points scored. Tyler has made 105 points total so far this season.Senior Tylor Beach is not far behind Cooper with

a total of 100 points made this season. He is also leading with the most three point shots successful-ly made. With an average of about 9.1 points per game, Tylor still has time to bump those numbers up.“Right before we break it down and storm the

court to warm up, I feel the most excited and pumped up,” Tylor shares. Tylor has not given up, nor has his team.Junior Garrett Meyers leads the team with the

highest free throw percentage with a 69%. He also leads the team with the highest number of two

Head coach Kevin Dunbar possesses great enthusiasm for his coaching. After five consecutive years of coach-ing, Mr. Dunbar knows how to work with his team. The boys have been fun to watch on Friday nights as they draw in the fans at home games.

swing as they come down the final stretch. With less than a month before the season’s end, everyone is pushing his physical limits with one goal in mind: State champion.Coach Cutter Garrison said,

“It’s all preseason to me until regionals.” The team and coaches all look at the regular season as preseason. The true test will come at the regional

and state tournament.Cedaredge has some very

tough and talented wrestlers all with the hopes of making a mark in the state tournament. Not all will though. It’s the toughest and meanest people who will place at any tourna-ment.As the season draws to its

close for the 2014-2015 sea-son, Coaches Cutter Garrison, Bob Overturf, and Jeremy McCracken are making sure no shortcuts are taken. A visit to Ignacio added to their record of wins and losses this last weekend.

Staff WriterNational Western Stock Show is an expe-

rience you cannot get anywhere else. The event sports greasy, overpriced junk food, the smell of cow manure everywhere, rodeos ev-ery night and country music inside and out. Shandon Walker states, “My favorite part

about stock show was all the entertainment all around you from the music to livestock shows and rodeos. Every second was full of fun.” Those who have experienced Stock Show can agree with Shandon’s statement. Eight of the top sellers from the Cedaredge

High School FFA chapter’s recent fruit and jerky sales attended National Western Stock Show in Denver. They departed January fourteenth and returned January twentieth. They stayed at their instructor Katie Green-wood’s parents home. While they were there, they visited a lamb

slaughterhouse, an egg factory, and a candy

factory. Mackenzie Kenyon states, “ The slaughterhouse was an experience I will not forget. I have gained a new respect for all the hard work that goes into processing the food that we eat everyday.” She went on to explain the intense feelings on the kill floor and the respect the workers expressed for the animals they processed. They explored Stock Show for five days.

The attended the PBR bull riding finals and the Wild West show. The group was also presented with the opportunity to assist in a college level livestock judging competition. They sorted judging cards, supervised to pre-vent cheating, and helped Mrs. Greenwood setup for the awards ceremony. These students experienced impactful and

entertaining adventures over the course of their weeklong visit. It is a trip they will not soon forget.

Four hours of testing, four hours of agony. On the crisp morning of January, 20th, the day starts at eight, students are sorted into one of two classrooms, the pledge is recited, instructions are given, and the test begins. Armed with three different pencils and coffee-filled veins, approxi-mately thirty students buckled down to test their knowledge on AP Language material. Fifty-three multiple-choice questions are answered and three essays are written.Some students found the exam helpful and were

happy to have taken it. Cheyenne Stone stated, “Taking the mock exam will allow Ms. Gillis to cover or review the information we will need to pass the real AP exam in May and gives me an

idea of what I need to practice.” The mock exam put students into a real testing situation to show them what to expect. Other students had different ideas about the

exam. Candice McDermeth aggressively stated, “I can see how the exam is helpful, but it was also a huge waste of time; if I test for four hours, I want to get real results. The exam intimidated me and makes me scared for the real one.” AP Language students will receive their scores

in March, and from there they can begin working on problem areas and continue to excel in the areas in which they succeed. With four months to study for the real deal, Ms. Gillis is confident that all her students will walk away from the test with a passing score of three, four, or five.

NHS will be selling flowers and chocolate for Valentine’s Day from February 3rd-5th.They will label the flower and chocolates accordingly so the recipient knows whom

they received it from and will charge $1.50 per set. They will be delivered the 13th.

On February 7th, Student Council will be hosting a winter dance. This dance is not formal, so you may wear whatever you

want as long as it is school approriate and follows the dress code. The dance will

last from 8p.m-12p.m on the 7th. A song request list is proided at the front office, so you can dance to your favorite songs.

Valentine’s Day sucks, plain and simple. It’s a day for the guys to feel like they need to get their girlfriends something, and they end up spending way more money than they need to. The girls sit around expecting some type of present or token of love. As for the single people, it’s the day they get to sit around and watch all the lovey-dovey couples be all over each other. No one wants to be around people like that on a day like Valentine’s, especially when they’re single. Ricardo Lopez says, “I don’t like it because it makes you feel bad about yourself when everyone has someone and you don’t.” I know the feeling. In middle school, I got dumped on Valentine’s Day and for as long as I can remember I’ve never had a Valentine. It’s not fun! When people don’t have a Valentine, they sit around watching romances thinking about the love they could have and wishing someone would love them like the actors in the movie. On the bright side, singles get to eat all the chocolate and candy they want without being judged or having to share. Overall, it’s a sorry excuse of a way to show appreciation and love for the person they’re with when in reality they should show it everyday.

As the cold, wintery air begins to fade with the approach of spring, one special

day starts to warm students’ hearts. On the fourteenth of February, most of the world celebrates Valentine’s Day. Some people truly enjoy the day dedicated to expressing love and admiration of others. Jessica Craig is one of those

people. She believes that Valentine’s Day is the most wonderful holiday besides Christmas and Thanksgiving. “It’s a really good day for people to interact with their loved ones and just show them how much they really care,” she explained. Most

consumers show their appreciation by spending their hard-earned money on flowers, chocolates, and cards for their special someone.

This not only provides a huge boost to the economy, but it also provides gyms and dentists with plenty of customers battling to rid themselves of unwanted

pounds and cavities. Jessica said, “The best part about Valentine’s Day is definitely the candy.” She shares this consumer attitude with most other Americans, who spent $17.3 billion on the holiday in 2014. Just like in elementary school, many students will receive some sort of gift; roses are sold by the National Honor Society. However, Jessica’s perfect Valentine’s Day present would be a gigantic bag of candy. “That way, I could spend all day eating it while sitting on the couch and watching Netflix.” To all the dentists and 24-hour gyms, here we come.

Colorado Mesa UniversityAs urban areas con-

tinue to expand in the dry and drought-stricken Southwest, farmers and ranchers feel increasingly nervous about their abil-ity to continue to access irrigation water. Agricul-ture consumes about 85% of the water that is con-sumed in Colorado, but that share is expected to shrink as competition for the resource increases.

Climate, economic and policy factors will all influence how agricultural use will change and how agricultural communities will be affected.

The Water Center at Colorado Mesa Universi-ty is focusing this year’s annual, three-evening Water Course for citizens on water for agriculture in order to enhance under-standing of this challenge and how different individ-uals and organizations are responding. The course will be held on consecu-tive Wednesdays, Feb. 11, 18 and 25, from 6-9 p.m., in CMU’s University Cen-ter Ballroom. The presen-tations will also be live-streamed on the Internet.

There is a registration fee of $45 for the whole series, or $20 per indi-vidual session, although the course is free for K-12 teachers and students, faculty and staff at CMU, as well as a limited num-ber of scholarships avail-able.

Session 1, on Feb. 11, will focus on the climate and legal context for agri-culture in Colorado.

After a brief introduc-tion on the extent and importance of agriculture in Colorado, Dr. Gigi Rich-ard of Colorado Mesa Uni-versity will give a presen-tation on how Colorado’s natural hydrology affects growing conditions, and how that hydrology has been modified through dams, diversions and res-ervoirs. She will also dis-cuss some of the challenges that climate change could bring for agriculture.

Kirsten Kurath, an attorney with the Grand Junction firm Williams, Turner and Holmes, PC, will then provide an over-view of Colorado Water Law, with special empha-sis on legal issues related to agricultural use, includ-

ing tools for sharing water with other uses.

Session 2, on Feb. 18, will focus on current water use and the economics of agriculture.

Dr. Perry Cabot, a Grand Junction-based regional water specialist with Colorado State Uni-versity’s Colorado Water Institute, will introduce the session with a presen-tation on how, and how much, water is used by agriculture, and a discus-sion of the benefits and complications of efficiency and conservation. Follow-ing his talk, Kevin Con-rad of the Grand Valley Water Users Association will describe efficiency improvements on the Gov-ernment High Line Canal, and a local producer will discuss on-farm efficiency measures.

The second half of ses-sion 2 will focus on agri-cultural economics, with an introductory presenta-tion by Jesse Russell, an Agricultural and Business Management Specialist with CSU Extension, on agriculture’s contribution to the economy, as well as economic factors affect-ing agricultural water use. His presentation will be followed by a panel of local producers, including Collbran rancher Carlyle Currier, Palisade fruit grower Bruce Talbott, and Fruita farmer Joe Bernal, who grows a variety of row crops.

Session 3, on Feb. 25, will focus on the future of irrigated agriculture in Colorado and the Colorado River Basin.

Brent Newman of the Colorado Water Conserva-tion Board will review how agriculture is addressed in Colorado’s draft Water Plan, and Ken Nowak of the U.S. Bureau of Rec-lamation will discuss how agriculture is being addressed in Colorado Basin-wide efforts to bal-ance supply and demand.

Mr. Nowak is a co-chair of the Agricultural Conser-vation, Productivity and Water Transfers Work-group, one of several work groups formed to follow up on the Bureau of Rec-lamation’s Colorado River Basin Supply and Demand study, which was released in December 2012.

Their presentations will be followed by a panel discussion that will high-light key factors and tools that can influence the future of irrigated agri-culture in Colorado and

the Colorado River Basin. Panelists will include Kim Albertson, Grand Val-ley farmer and Colorado Basin Roundtable mem-ber; Steve Fletcher, man-ager of the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Asso-ciation; and Dan Birch of the Colorado River Dis-trict.

ern Coloradans a wealth of opportunities to learn about agricultural irriga-tion. In addition to the Water Center at CMU’s annual three-evening Water Course Feb. 11, 18 & 25 (learn more at www.coloradomesa.edu/WaterCenter), the Ditch and Reservoir Company Alliance (DARCA) will hold its annual conven-tion Feb. 11-13 at the Two Rivers Convention Center in Grand Junc-tion.

While the Water Cen-ter’s Water Course will offer insights into how agricultural water use relates to other water uses, the DARCA conven-tion will offer the oppor-tunity to dive into techni-cal issues irrigation water providers wrestle with, as well as the significance of the Colorado Water Plan for agriculture.

On Feb. 11, DARCA’s pre-convention work-shops will cover techno-logical and data tools. On Feb. 12, speakers will discuss the California drought, water market-ing, and financing tools

before the focus turns to Colorado’s water plan. On Feb. 13, participants can choose from work-shops on the corporate formalities of ditch com-panies, water court and appellate processes, and ditch rider issues and rights.

While the DARCA convention is primar-

ily geared toward ditch company board mem-bers, staff and sharehold-ers, anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of western water issues would be well-served by attending. Agriculture is the primary consumer of water in our region, and how ditches are managed affects the recreational

and environmental val-ues in rivers and streams, as well as our region’s ability to grow food. In addition, ditch companies increasingly provide irri-gation water to subdivi-sions as well as farms.

The application dead-line for the Enrich Colo-rado Agriculture Grant Program is quickly approaching. Grant funds are available to help Col-orado companies conduct research and develop new uses and markets for food and agricultural products that are grown, raised or processed in Colorado.

Projects eligible for funding include, but are not limited to, feasibil-ity studies and technical projects such as assessing the potential of establish-ing an agricultural value-added business project; and marketing and sales promotion projects such as first-time participa-tion in trade shows, new product launches and promotions supporting the development of new sales channels. The max-imum award per project is $15,000.

A matching contribu-tion of cash and in-kind resources equal to at least 50 percent of the total project budget is required. Applications are due by 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 27.

Rev. Flynn was

ordained in the Episco-pal Church in 1966 and served four congregations in the Los Angeles area for 30 years. A life-chang-ing in-filling with the Holy Spirit in 1972 and subsequent mentoring by

Agnes Sanford in the ’70s and John Wimber in the ’80s strongly impacted his life and ministry.

During his pastorate at St. Jude’s in Burbank, Calif., Rev. Flynn and 1,100 team members led

150 conferences in the U.S. and Pacific Rim. In 1996 he began leading FreshWind Ministries full time. He has written numerous articles and five books: Holy Vulner-ability, Inner Healing,

The Mustard Seed Book, Making Disciples and How to Be Good Without Really Trying.

Practical tips for keep-ing relationships fresh and fulfilling will be con-sidered at Lifetree Café Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m.

The program, titled “Keeping Love Alive: Keys to Staying Close Every Day,” includes a film of a married couple who discovered they were drifting apart.

“We had a selfish mar-riage,” says Lisa Sand-ers. “Both of us were liv-ing our own lives, going our own ways. Something had to change.”

Change arrived in the form of Hurricane Katrina. “We lost every-thing,” says Sanders, who will share the story of how the couple found a way to rebuild their

relationship.Participants will gain

practical principles and strategies for keeping romantic relationships and friendships fresh and rewarding.

C hristine Garner, a local professional artist, lives in a log

cabin on Cedar Mesa, east of Cedaredge. The walls of her residence provide an ever-changing exhibit space for her new and favorite art pieces.

While attending Visual Arts Institute in Denver, Gar-ner received a ribbon on every piece that she entered in an art show. A judge encouraged her, saying, “You have real talent … continue … go on!”

Her first art show after graduating in 1973 was at the Armory in Montrose. She has continued to enjoy participat-ing in fine art shows including the art show circuit (referred to as ‘street fairs’) in Colora-do, Arizona, and New Mexico. She has served as a judge at several shows throughout the country.

Among other outlets for Garner’s artwork are the Highlands Gallery in North Carolina; a design center, Great Things West, in Breck-enridge where she worked with the Breckenridge Music Institute; Business of Art Center in Manitou Springs; and the Luma Gallery in the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. She presently has pieces in a total of six galler-ies.

“You never know who will come through the galleries and art shows to purchase or commission works of art,” Garner said. Among the bet-ter-known names that now have pieces she has done are

Forest Craig of football fame; R. Gordon Gould, inventor of the laser beam; Paul Shaffer, keyboardist for David Letter-man’s band; Ginny Rametty, CEO of IBM in New York; and Jerry B. Jenkins, author of the “Left Behind” series.

She has also wood-burned life-sized images of familiar western figures Tom Mix, Annie Oakley and Wild Bill Hickock for a Parade of Homes in Woodland Park.

A mural was commissioned and appears at The Broad-moor’s condo, The Arbors, in Colorado Springs. Other murals have been painted in homes, including one in a for-mer home of President George Bush, commissioned by the present owner. Another mural representing soccer players in action was commissioned for a private home in Colorado Springs.

Garner created jewelry (1990-2000) at first, working with MacLauren Markowitz in Boulder.

She enjoys wood-burn-ing art pieces, working side by side with her mother Del Miessler who has also had her own creations featured in an earlier issue of the Delta County Independent. Miessler was one of several area artists who formed the Art Guild in Montrose many years ago.

Wood-burned and decorat-ed items include work done on small to very large pieces, varying from modern to neo-classic designs. Woods used also vary; some are pieces of driftwood collected when water levels are low at Blue Mesa Reservoir, burls, and a variety of other woods includ-ing sheets of imported, fine-grained Baltic birch.

She had used metals and polished stones in her jewelry for many years, but when she started using sheet metal, an entire new concept evolved. She works closely with Welf-elt Fabrication in Delta. The company bends sheets of steel cut to her specifications, sands the edges, and welds a

couple of nuts on the back to be used for hanging the fin-ished piece.

When Garner receives this base, her work begins. She thoroughly cleans the entire area. The texturing goes on first using a hard molding paste applied with assorted tools, pallet knives, sponges, combs — anything to achieve the desired texture. When this dries, she applies a base enamel color, usually blue or black, something dark so other colors can be built up on top, working from dark to light. Appliques, stones, pieces of glass or leafing can be added for a sought-after effect. And last, a clear coat overall is applied for protec-tion of the finished product that can be displayed, even outdoors if desired.

Designers and builders of small to huge corporate head-quarters have commissioned her for special projects, often for large pieces displayed in entryways and reception areas.

Nancy Noyes of Healing Arts has hired several art-ists to feature the elements

of glass, metal, water (foun-tains) and wood to display in hospitals throughout the country. These are hung in entryways and waiting rooms to represent stability, relax-ation and comfort for those entering the facilities. Gar-ner was chosen to participate and presently has metal work at Boston Medical Campus Ann Arbor, Michigan Hospi-tal, L’Attitude in Boston, and three pieces for the Adven-tist Castle Rock Hospital. The concept of specific art aimed at healing is fairly new and Garner is excited about tak-ing part in this venture.

Locally, Garner has had a booth at AppleFest 2014 and was celebrated as the featured artist at last November’s All Saints Lutheran Church’s annual craft and bake sale.

Looking ahead, she has been asked to submit photos of completed art pieces for consideration at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction and two pieces for a client’s residences, one in Florida and another in Buffalo, N.Y.

Cedaredge artist Christine Garner demonstrates how she creates unique art using metal as the base. This recently completed piece started as a sheet of 18-gauge steel. It, along with 17 other pieces of Garner’s artwork, was placed, just this past weekend, at the Oakley Gallery, a co-op inside Interior Etc. at 6th and Main in Grand Junction.

These pieces represent the variety of jewelry designed by Christine Garner. The necklace is a “marriage of metals.” A handsaw was used to cut out the area for the stone. The medallion can be removed and replaced with the feather piece or worn alone as a broach. The square broach on the right is granulation on sterling, resulting in ridges caused by heating. Each tiny bead is welded in place.

A maple burl becomes art when embellished with wood-burned images, titled “Tree Dwellers.” Garner often wood-burns fanciful characters, fairies, mermaids or trolls onto found pieces of driftwood.

“Chanson” (French for ‘a song’) is burned on a sheet of Baltic birch from Russia. The solid wood ply is very white allowing for a soft base color. Wood stains, inks and a bit of leafing are added. This and others, using the same techniques, were completed for several churches.
