Document purposeThis guide describes the VxManager application, how it works with the VxRack SDDCsystem, how it integrates with VMware SDDC Manager, and how to performadministrative tasks.

AudienceThis document is intended for customers, field personnel, and partners who want tomanage and operate a VxRack SDDC system.

VxManager overviewThe VxRack SDDC VxManager application is a functionality extension that integrateswith VMware SDDC Manager to add and enhance administrative capabilities for yourVxRack SDDC system.

VxManager is seamlessly integrated with VMware SDDC Manager at the factory.VxManager provides the following additional or enhanced capabilities from withinVMware SDDC Manager:

Managing passwords overviewSeveral passwords are preset when your system is deployed. For security, Dell EMCrecommends that you change some of these passwords.

Refer to the Dell EMC VxRack System SDDC Security Configuration Guide for moreinformation on security. This guide includes procedures to change the followingpasswords:

l Mystic password

l iDRAC password

l Support VM password

Note

You must provide the iDRAC root passwords and the Administrator password for theSupport VM for all Dell EMC support engagements.

About Administering VMware Cloud Foundation on the VMware website providesinformation about changing passwords the VMware Cloud Foundation manages.

Changing the Mystic passwordChange the Mystic password after the VxRack SDDC has been installed.

This procedure is intended for Dell EMC Service providers and VxRack SDDCAdministrators and customers who are authorized to work on VxRack SDDC Systems.

Note

To reset a forgotten or lost Mystic password, contact Dell EMC Customer Support.

Procedure

1. Use the vSphere Web Client to log in to vCenter Server with administrativeprivileges.

2. Navigate to VM and Templates > vx-manager-1.

3. On the Summary tab, click Launch Remote Console.

4. Click inside the console window, and log in with the username: mystic.

5. Enter the current password of the mystic account.

6. In the console, open the xterm window and run the command: passwd7. Type a new password.

8. Retype the new password to confirm.

9. Close the xterm window and log out of the remote console.

Changing the iDRAC passwordWe highly recommend that you change the iDRAC password after the system isdeployed.

iDRAC is on an isolated network, which is internal to SDDC and is not exposedexternally.

You can use the iDRAC utility to change the password. Refer to the iDRAC User Guidefor your specific hardware model.

Note

Dell EMC recommends that you use the same password for each node in the rack.

The following links provide more information:

Configuring local users using iDRAC web interface

You can also use the system BIOS to change or reset the iDRAC password. Thisrequires onsite access.

Procedure

1. From iDRAC Settings, select User Configuration and press Enter.

2. Select Change Password, type the new password and press Enter.

3. In the pop-up window that appears, type the new password and press Enter toconfirm the password change.

4. Press Escape. Press Escape again.

5. From the pop-up, select OK and press Enter.

Changing the Support VM administrator passwordDell EMC recommends that you change the administrator password for the SupportVM, which runs Windows Server 2012.

Note

You must provide the iDRAC root passwords and the Administrator password for theSupport VM for all Dell EMC support engagements.

Procedure

1. Use Remote Desktop to log into the server.

2. Press the Windows key and type .

3. Double-click Computer Management.

4. Expand Local Users and Groups and click Users.

5. Right-click Administrator and select Set Password > Proceed.

6. Type the new password in both fields and select OK.

VxManager Events and Alerts

VxManager monitors the state of the VxRack SDDC system hardware. Failure eventand alert notifications are passed through to VMware SDDC Manager and can beviewed within the SDDC Manager UI.

Viewing VxManager events and alerts in VMware SDDCManager

When VxManager detects hardware failures, the event and alert notifications arepassed through to VMware SDDC Manager. Follow these steps to view thenotification in SDDC Manager.

Procedure

1. Log into VMware SDDC Manager.

2. Click STATUS in the left navigation pane.

3. Observe the System Status > System Alerts window.

Failure events and alerts are displayed in the System Alerts area of thewindow.

Accessing VxManager eServices from VMware SDDCManager

Follow these steps to access VxRack SDDC eServices using VxManager throughVMware SDDC Manager.

Procedure

1. Log into VMware SDDC Manager.

2. From the SDDC Manager Dashboard click CALL HOME.

The VxManager eServices window is displayed.

3. Configure the eServices as described in the following sections.

Linking your Online Support account to VxRack SDDCVxManager

For convenience, you can link your Online Support account with VxManager andaccess support resources for your VxRack SDDC system without having to log inseparately.

Before you begin

You must have an account before you can link it with VxManager. To create a supportaccount, see Registering for online support.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager click DASHBOARD.

2. In the navigation pane, select Settings > CALL HOME.

The VxManager eServices page is displayed.

3. In the Set Support Account section click one of the following buttons:

l Set Support Account (if no account has been set)

l Change Support Account (if an account was previously set)

The Username and Password fields are displayed.

4. Type your account credentials in the Username and Password fields.

Leave both fields blank if you wish to unlink all accounts.

5. Click Login.

VxManager will log into your account and display that your account is in use.

Configuring a network proxy serverConfigure proxy settings to allow connections to an external network through yourproxy server. You can update, enable, and disable the proxy settings.

Before you begin

You must supply an existing proxy server. The type of the proxy should be eitherHTTP or SOCK4/5.

The following table lists the supported proxy types for VxManager and ESRS VE.

The proxy is used for the Internet connection to the Dell EMC community, knowledgebase search, and so on.

The proxy configuration is applied to the ESRS virtual environment during ESRSenablement and activation. After ESRS is activated, the proxy information can be setfrom the ESRS side independently but it will always be overwritten if new a proxy isset from VxManager.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager click DASHBOARD.

2. In the navigation pane, select Settings > CALL HOME.

The VxManager eServices page is displayed.

3. In the Configure Proxy Settings section verify the value of Your currentproxy status:

l Disabled: Proxy is not enabled.

l Enabled: Proxy is enabled.

4. Do one of the following:

l If your proxy status is Disabled, and you need to configure the proxy,proceed to step 5.

l If your proxy status is Enabled, and you need to update the proxy, skip tostep 8.

l If your proxy status is Enabled, and you need to disable the proxy, skip tostep 9.

5. Click Enable Proxy.

The proxy configuration form expands.

6. Enter the information for the proxy you want to configure:

a. Select the expected proxy type from the Type dropdown box.

The supported proxy types includes HTTP and SOCKS.

b. If SOCKS is selected, choose SOCKS4 or SOCKS5 as the SOCKS type.

c. In Address field, enter the IP/Hostname and Port number of the proxyserver you are using.

d. If you choose HTTP or SOCKS5 in step a, you can provide credentials foraccessing the proxy server by checking Autenticate using followingcredentials. Provide the username and password in the correspondingfields.

e. If ESRS is enabled, enter the ESRS admin password in the ESRS passwordfield.

7. Click Enable.

The configured proxy settings are enabled for VxManager.

When your proxy status is Enabled, the process is complete. A message “Proxysettings have been enabled” is displayed.

8. To modify the proxy settings, do the following:

a. Click Update Proxy.

The proxy configuration form is expanded.

b. Modify the fields you want to update in the form.

c. If ESRS is enabled, input the ESRS admin password in the ESRS passwordfield.

d. Click Update.

The configured proxy settings are changed and applied for VxManager.

9. To disable the proxy, do the following:

a. Click the triangle button beside the Update Proxy button.

b. Click Disable Proxy in the dropdown box.

c. If ESRS is enabled, input the ESRS admin password in the ESRS passwordfield and click Disable Proxy.

When your proxy status is Disabled, the process is complete. A message “Proxysettings have been disabled” is displayed.

Setting Internet online/offline mode (Network EnvironmentSettings)

Follow these steps to enable or disable your VxManager's connection to the Internet.

Note

Some VxManager features are disabled when the appliance Internet connection isdisabled.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager click DASHBOARD.

2. In the navigation pane, select Settings > CALL HOME.

The VxManager eServices page is displayed.

3. In the Configure Network Environment Settings section, select one of thefollowing:

l Internet Connection Connected: Internet access for your system isenabled.

l Internet Connection Disconnected: Internet access for your system isdisabled.

4. Click Apply.

Results

When Internet Connection Disconnected is selected, some VxManager features aredisabled. A message is displayed for the disabled features.

Enabling Secure Remote Support (ESRS)ESRS provides secure, automated access between Support and your VxRack SDDCsystem. You must install and activate an integrated ESRS or register to an ExternalESRS gateway to enable some features in VxManager.

You must have a support account before you enable ESRS. To create a supportaccount, Registering for online support.

Note

If you plan to set up ESRS, your Online Support account must be linked to VxManagerunder the same party ID or it will not work properly.

Enabling integrated Secure Remote Support (ESRS)Follow these steps to activate integrated ESRS on your VxRack SDDC system.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager click DASHBOARD.

2. In the navigation pane, select Settings > CALL HOME.

The VxManager eServices page is displayed.

3. In the ESRS section verify the value of Your current ESRS status is.

l Disabled: ESRS is not activated.

l Deployed: ESRS has been installed but not activated.

l Enabled: ESRS is activated.

4. Do one of the following:

l If your ESRS status is Disabled, proceed to step 5.

l If your ESRS status is Deployed, skip to step 11.

l If your ESRS status is Enabled, skip to step 14.

5. Click Enable ESRS.

The Enable ESRS window is displayed.

6. Uncheck Join External ESRS.

The fields for configuring integrated ESRS are displayed.

7. In the IP field, enter a valid IP address on the management network used byyour VxRack SDDC system.

ESRS must be on the same management network as vCenter and VxManager toreceive alerts and broadcast them back to Support.

8. Verify that the site ID and contact information are correct.

These fields are pre-filled based on your Support account. However, you canmanually update them if you wish.

9. Set the passwords for the root account and the admin account.

10. Click Submit.

A status bar is displayed as ESRS is deployed on your system. When theprocess is complete, an access code is emailed to the address specified for yoursupport account.

11. When your ESRS status is Deployed, click Activate ESRS.

The Enable ESRS window is displayed.

12. Type or paste the access code in the Access code field.

The access code is valid for 30 minutes. If your code has expired, clickRegenerate access code to receive a new code by email.

13. Click Submit.

A status bar is displayed as ESRS is activated on your system. When theprocess is complete, your ESRS status shows Enabled.

14. When your ESRS status is Enabled, the process is complete.

15. If you want to reset ESRS on your system, click Reset ESRS. In the ResetESRS dialog, click Reset to confirm.

You can re-enable ESRS by following the steps in this procedure.

Enabling external Secure Remote Support (ESRS)Follow these steps to configure external ESRS on your VxRack SDDC system.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager click DASHBOARD.

2. In the navigation pane, select Settings > CALL HOME.

The VxManager eServices page is displayed.

3. Verify the value of Your current ESRS status is.

l Disabled: ESRS is not activated.

l Deployed: ESRS has been installed but not activated.

l Enabled: ESRS is activated.

4. Do one of the following:

l If your ESRS status is Disabled, proceed to step 5.

l If your ESRS status is Deployed, skip to step 11.

l If your ESRS status is Enabled, skip to step 11 or 12.

5. Click Enable ESRS.

The Enable ESRS window is displayed.

6. Check Join External ESRS.

The fields for configuring external ESRS are displayed.

7. In the IP field, enter the external ESRS gateway IP address for VxManagerregistration.

8. Verify that the site ID and contact information are correct.

9. Add another external ESRS for failover.

10. Click Submit.

VxManager is registered with the specified external ESRS.

When your ESRS status shows as Enabled, the process is complete.

11. To view or reconfigure external ESRS on your system, follow these steps:

a. Click Show/Reconfig ESRS.

The current registered ESRS is displayed.

b. Make your changes.

c. Click Submit.

The ESRS configuration is modified.

12. To reset ESRS on your system, follow these steps:

a. Click Reset ESRS.

b. In the Reset ESRS dialog, click Reset to confirm.

You can re-enable ESRS by following the steps in this procedure.

VxRack SDDC Host Physical View

VxManager enables you to view the physical components of your VxRack SDDC hosthardware from with the VMware SDDC Manager UI.

Use the VxManager Host Physical View to:

l Visually locate faulted hardware components

l View node information

l View disk information

l View NIC information

l View PSU information

Viewing physical host informationThe VxManager Host Physical View page displays information about the hardwarecomponents of your VxRack SDDC system. A graphical representation of the nodes inyour cluster makes it easy to navigate for event and status information.

Use the Host Physical View to view the following:

l Cluster: See the host nodes in your cluster with summary information.

l Appliances in the cluster: View appliance status and information such as ID, serialnumber, and so on.

l Individual appliance components: Drill down to see status and information forappliance components such as disks, compute nodes, and power supplies.

Viewing and locating host hardware eventsQuickly locate and identify critical events, errors, and warnings on any node in thecluster.

VxManager displays status icons to indicate events that occur on your system.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager navigate to DASHBOARD > PHYSICALRESOURCES > RACK DETAILS > HOST DETAILS.

The Host Details window is displayed.

2. At PHYSICAL VIEW click VXMANAGER.

The VxManager Host Physical View window is displayed.

3. Click Cluster to see a graphical overview of the nodes in the cluster.

A picture of each node in the cluster is shown. Click the name below the pictureto see a summary of that node.

4. Click a node name or the picture of a node to view more information about thatnode.

The Front View and Back View of the node are displayed.

5. If a status icon is displayed next to a node, click the node or the magnifyingglass icon to see more information.

6. Click any node component to view more details.

l Click a Disk in the Front View or Back View to see disk status andinformation.

l Click a Node in the Back View to see compute and network information.

l Click a power supply in the Back View to see power supply status andinformation.

l Click the Back View to see compute information.

l Click a NIC in the Back View to network information.

7. If a status icon is displayed on any component, click it to view event details inthe VMware SDDC Manager Alerts window.

Use your browser's back button to return to the node view.

Viewing physical disk statusView status and information for any node disk in a cluster.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager navigate to DASHBOARD > PHYSICALRESOURCES > RACK DETAILS > HOST DETAILS.

The Host Details window is displayed.

2. At PHYSICAL VIEW click VXMANAGER.

The VxManager Host Physical View window is displayed.

3. Click a node name, picture, or the magnifying glass icon next to it.

The Front View and Back View of the node are displayed.

4. Click a Disk in the Front View or Back View.

The Disk Information panel is displayed for that disk.

5. If a status icon is displayed, click it to view event details.

Results

The Disk Information panel lists disk status and information about the drive, such as:

l Status LED on/off

l Serial number

l Protocol

l Enclosure and slot location

l Disk type

l Manufacturer

l Capacity

l Remaining rated write endurance level for SSDs

Checking an SSD's remaining rated write enduranceDisplay the remaining rated write endurance (RRWE) for an SSD in a node.

For SSD drives, the Disk Information panel displays a message when the remainingrated write endurance reaches certain levels:

l Warning: 30% rated write endurance remaining

l Error: 20% rated write endurance remaining

l Critical: 5% rated write endurance remaining

The Error and Critical levels are reported on the VMware SDDC Manager Alertswindow.

Follow these steps to view the SSD remaining rated write endurance notification:

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager navigate to DASHBOARD > PHYSICALRESOURCES > RACK DETAILS > HOST DETAILS.

The Host Details window is displayed.

2. At PHYSICAL VIEW click VXMANAGER.

The VxManager Host Physical View window is displayed.

3. Click a node name, picture, or the magnifying glass icon next to it.

The Front View and Back View of the node are displayed.

4. Click an SSD in the Front View or Back View.

The Disk Information panel is displayed for that SSD.

5. Observe the remaining rated write endurance notification (if displayed).

Viewing physical node statusView compute, boot device, and NIC status and information for any node in a cluster.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager navigate to DASHBOARD > PHYSICALRESOURCES > RACK DETAILS > HOST DETAILS.

The Host Details window is displayed.

2. At PHYSICAL VIEW click VXMANAGER.

The VxManager Host Physical View window is displayed.

3. Click a node name, picture, or the magnifying glass icon next to it.

The Front View and Back View of the node are displayed.

4. Click a chassis or a node in the Front View or Back View.

The Node Information panel is displayed for that node.

5. If a status icon is displayed, click it to view event details in the VMware SDDCManager Alerts window.

Results

The Node Information panel lists status and information about the node, such as:

l Status LED on/off

l Serial number

l BIOS firmware version

l Boot device serial number and statistics

l Network interface card (NIC) MAC addresses and status

Viewing power supply statusView status and information for the power supplies of any node in a cluster.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager navigate to DASHBOARD > PHYSICALRESOURCES > RACK DETAILS > HOST DETAILS.

The Host Details window is displayed.

2. At PHYSICAL VIEW click VXMANAGER.

The VxManager Host Physical View window is displayed.

3. Click a node name, picture, or the magnifying glass icon next to it.

The Front View and Back View of the node are displayed.

4. Click a power supply in the center area of the Back View.

The Power Supply Information panel is displayed for that power supply.

5. If a status icon is displayed, click it to view event details in VMware SDDCManager window.

Results

The Power Supply Information panel lists status and information about the powersupply, such as:

l Serial number

l Manufacturer

Viewing physical NIC statusView NIC status and network information for any node in the cluster.

Procedure

1. In VMware SDDC Manager navigate to DASHBOARD > PHYSICALRESOURCES > RACK DETAILS > HOST DETAILS.

The Host Details window is displayed.

2. At PHYSICAL VIEW click VXMANAGER.

The VxManager Host Physical View window is displayed.

3. Click a node name, picture, or the magnifying glass icon next to it.

The Front View and Back View of the node are displayed.

4. Click a NIC in the Back View.

The NIC Information panel is displayed for that NIC.

Results

The NIC Information panel lists status and information about the NIC, such as:

Using Support Services

Access Support Services directly from VMware SDDC Manager through theVxManager extension.

Click SUPPORT on the VMware SDDC Manager navigation to view the VxManagerSupport page.

To use Support Services, you must have created an account. To create an accountvisit support.EMC.com.

The VxManager Support page lets you access the following Support Services:

l Chat with Support: Opens a chat session with a support representative.

l Open a Service Request: Opens a Web form where you can open a servicerequest.

l VxRail Community: Displays the most recent activity from the VxRack SDDCcommunity forums. Click a title to view the discussion.

l Knowledge Base: Lets you search, access, and view the support knowledge base.

SupportCreate an Online Support account to get access to support and product resources foryour VxRack SDDC system.

If you already have an account, register your VxRack SDDC system to access theavailable resources.

For convenience, you can link your Online Support account with VxRack SDDC andaccess support resources without having to log in separately.

Note

If you plan to set up ESRS, your Online Support account must be linked to VxRackSDDC under the same party ID or the deployment will fail. Your system must also be inan installed state in the Install Base.

Registering for online supportCreate an Online Support account to access support resources.

After you register, you can:

l Register your system

l Obtain product license files and software updates

l Download product documentation

l Download the SolVe Desktop application for hardware replacement and upgradeprocedures

l Browse the community and support information

l Link your support account for access to resources from within VxManager

Procedure

1. Point your Web browser to support.emc.com.

2. Click Register here.

3. Fill in the required information.

Support will send you a confirmation email, typically within 48 hours.

Procedure

1. Click SUPPORT in VMware SDDC Manager to open the VxManager Supportwindow.

2. Click Chat with Support to start a live chat session with a supportrepresentative.

The chat session opens. VxManager transmits your system ID to the supportrepresentative.

Opening a service requestContact Customer Service to request service for your VxRack SDDC system.

Procedure

1. Click SUPPORT in VMware SDDC Manager to open the VxManager Supportwindow.

2. For multiple nodes, click the arrow next to Open a Service Request.

A list of the nodes in your cluster is shown.

3. Click the node for which you want service.

A service request form opens in a new browser tab. The form is prepopulatedwith information about the node you selected.

4. Fill out the required information and click Submit.

5. To submit a general service request, click Open a Service Request.

A Support Services page opens in a new browser tab where you can open arequest for service.

Viewing VxRack SDDC community updatesBrowse and read the most recent activity from the VxRack SDDC community forums.

Procedure

1. Click SUPPORT in VMware SDDC Manager to open the VxManager Supportwindow.

2. Observe the Support Community list.

The most recent activity from the VxRack SDDC community is shown.

3. Click the title of a message or article to view that topic in a new browser tab.

Using the support knowledge baseSearch, access, and view the support knowledge base.

Procedure

1. Click SUPPORT in VMware SDDC Manager to open the VxManager Supportwindow.

2. Type your search terms in the Knowledge Base search field and press Enter orclick the magnifying glass icon.

If you have not linked your support account with VxRack SDDC, you will beprompted to log in with your support credentials.

3. Click any of the returned search results to read that knowledge base article. Orclick More... to navigate to the knowledge base website.
