Grow Your Own in NovemberIt’s all getting a bit quieter on the plot as the growing year winds down. But having said that, there’s still a wealth of fun to be had for the committed alotmenteer! And quite a few of the jobs involve digging so the cold is no excuse for staying in.

As areas become vacant, where potatoes, onions, peas and beans have been growing for example, you can start spreading some manure – the more the merrier. Even if it’s still a bit fresh, it’ll have time to rot down over the winter. Any stables will have plenty you can take, or I did find some goat manure at a local farm that they let me take away for a pound a bag. Manure is traditionally dug in – warm and back breaking work. And that can be a literal description if you only dig once a year! My advice would be to either go slow with the digging or just spread the manure on the top of the soil and leave the digging job to the worms. If you get spreading in November, they’ve plenty of time to draw the manure down into the soil over winter.

While you’re out there with a spade, you can get your bean trench started for next year’s crop. Dig out a trench a couple of feet deep, line with newspaper, fill with a layer of veg peelings and cover over with a little soil. You can keep adding to this each week until your trench is full. The peelings will have all winter to rot down then and give a boost to your beans when you sow in May next year.

If you prefer to forage, then sloes, sweet chestnuts, rose hips and hawthorn berries are all out now. Sloes can be used to flavour gin; sweet chestnuts (although not as big as the Southern European ones in the shops) are lovely roasted (there are lots of trees round Newmillerdam and Otley Chevin); rose hips make a lovely syrup – full of vitamin C; and hawthorn berries (unusual but bear with me!) I’ve not tried this but on a recent wild food walk I discovered they can be made into a haw ketchup. Now I’m no Mr Heinz, and I can’t guarantee the taste would be as appealing to my family as that brand, but it does have the added advantage of regulating your circulation and blood pressure, being beneficial to those with both high and low blood pressure.

Last few speedy jobs: sow broadbeans, plant garlic, plant & prune fruit trees and berries, divide rhubarb, check sprouts are firmly staked.

Wakefield Hospice Ossett Fundraising GroupAutumn Fayre At Ossett Town Hall

Gawthorpe Brass'85 Winter Concert to be held at The King's Way Church, Ossett on Saturday 21st November 2015 at 7.15pm.

Admission (payable on the door) is £5 / £3 concessions. The training, youth and senior bands will all be taking part.

Refreshments will be served in the intervalFriends of York House - Livability Supporter - Coffee Morning

SATURDAY 7TH NOVEMBER from 10am till 2pm.

We hope that you will make a note of the date on your Calendar and that you will be able to come along and support the event, and enjoy the festive

We are planning the following stalls, Tombola, Christmas crafts, Hamper, Homemade chutneys etc. donations for the stalls/hamper would be appreciated.

We also need help manning the stalls and serving refreshments. Please let me know if you can help.

Our long term plans involve raising money towards a more suitable vehicle to give our family members who live at York House more opportunities for outings,

presently the Bus can present difficulties of a lack of qualified drivers and accessibility to some Car parks.

Wakefield Health Walks:The North Wakefield Group meet on Tuesdays at New Southgate Surgery

at Newton Bar. We meet at 9.15 for a 9.30 start.The walks are approximately 4 miles long and are aimed at fitter walkers.

We walk locally around the Wakefield area and car-share to the start of the walk.You do not need a car in order to join our walks but, if you do have a car, we would be grateful if you could offer lifts to non-car walkers .Suitable

NHS RETIREMENT FELLOWSHIP WAKEFIELD GROUP

We meet the first Tuesday of the month at 1.45pm for approximately two hours at the Salvation Army Centre, Vicarage Street, Wakefield. We are open to all retired health and social care staff and their partners and the

first couple of meetings would be free to ensure that there is something you would like to be involved in. We currently have no funding from the local Health Authorities as other groups in the area do so after that the cost is

currently £30 per annum but included in that is our annual Christmas lunch at a local restaurant. We have quizzes, bingo, strawberry teas etc and

occasional speakers when cost allows. We also organise an annual day trip and lunches out for member’s birthdays and are keen to start a walking group for short walks ideally ending with a pub lunch about once a month.For more details please contact Ros Bartle at [email protected]
