The Senior Citizens’ Support Group has been established for nearly six years. The group is run by trustees and volunteers.

We have two co�ee mornings per month, chair exercise weekly, bingo once a month, monthly trips, four theme days per year and Christmas lunches. Plus various events in the year.

Grow Your Own in MayYou won’t know where to start with all the exciting things you can be doing on your plot

this month so here’s a small selection of ideas!

Loads of seeds can be sown now both in and out. Here’s the lowdown. Directly outdoors: sprouts, caulis, cabbages, both broccolis, peas, roots, salad, sweetcorn (but pop a cloche over

these seeds to protect them from slugs). Indoors: French and runner beans (if it’s still cold, otherwise outdoors but protect from frost with fleece), squashes, chillies and peppers.

If you’ve already sown leeks, indoor or out, you can now transplant them to their final positions if they’re pencil thick. Prepare a watering can full of water mixed with manure. Then, make a deep hole with a dibber, drop your baby leek in and top up with the manurey water. Don’t fill the hole

with soil. This feed gives your leeks a brilliant head start and the deep hole ensures that you get a nice long white shaft.

You can plant your main crop potatoes this month. Last year I trialled Bob Flowerdew’s tip of lining my potato trenches with grass clippings and can report that I had an enormous bumper crop that was the envy of my neighbours (and that doesn’t happen often!) I’ll definitely be f

ollowing that advice again this year although I have foolishly weeded and feeded my own lawn so will be begging clippings from friends.

At the time of planting, or as they start to develop, you can make a really effective but also attractive support for your peas by using pruned raspberry canes stuck into the ground either side

of your row of peas at 45 degree angles.

Now, on to pests in the form of slugs - they can be a real menace to all your newly emerging seedlings. In my arsenal this year I’ve got a small (tiny) pond I made last year by sinking half a

barrel into a hole. I hoped frogs would just naturally navigate their way over but no joy. However, a friend with a successful pond full of frog spawn has offered to rehouse some of his my way. Fingers crossed that take to their new home and eat their way through my large population of slugs. If not it

will be back to the usual methods of beer traps, picking off and killing or relocating, and pellets.

Wakefield Health Walks:The North Wakefield Group meet on Tuesdays at New Southgate Surgery

at Newton Bar. We meet at 9.15 for a 9.30 start.The walks are approximately 4 miles long and are aimed at fitter walkers.

We walk locally around the Wakefield area and car-share to the start of the walk.You do not need a car in order to join our walks but, if you do have a car, we would be grateful if you could offer lifts to non-car walkers .Suitable

their carers and their families. We are a friendly and welcoming group with a regular attendance of up to fifty members and a total

membership of around eighty.We meet at Wrenthorpe Village Hall on the second Monday and fourth Wednesday of each month & also twice a month we hold a Hobbies,

Games & Activities group at Standbridge Community Centre in Kettlethorpe. We organise five day trips a year plus meals out, theatre trips, short
