Citrix Enables Dynamic Delivery for ESRI ArcGIS

Delivering the World of Geographical Software on Demand with Citrix

The Citrix Delivery Center Extends Impact and ROI of ESRI ArcGIS

ESRI’s mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) help fight forest fires, determine new national boundaries during peace negotiations, find promising sites for fast-growing companies, rebuild cities around the world, support optimal land-use planning, route emergency vehicles, monitor rain forest depletion, contain oil spills, and perform countless other vital tasks every day.

Yet, the powerful capabilities and voluminous databases of map images that distinguish ESRI ArcGIS® Desktop and ArcGIS® Server can create challenges in deploying the software using a traditional client/server architecture. These issues include:

• The burden of installing and configuring updates on individual desktops• The complexity of trouble-shooting and supporting ArcGIS in a heterogeneous computing environment• The need for high-end client devices and high-bandwidth, low-latency networks

By deploying the ArcGIS solutions in a Citrix environment, ESRI customers are able to overcome these obstacles. The Citrix Delivery Center has proven to significantly improve application performance, reliability, and scalability while reducing infrastructure costs and IT administration.

Many ESRI customers are using Citrix technology to optimize remote user access to ArcGIS Desktop applications, and GIS analyst's ability to cost-effectively author maps, globes, and geo-processing tasks on their desktop, and publish them to ArcGIS Server using integrated tools.

There are no desktop requirements and the client footprint is reduced by 99%.

A 45% response time improvement is realized for ArcGIS Server.

ESRI government customers have used Citrix to virtualize, accelerate, and secure GIS

applications for well over a decade. These customers are solving their infrastructure

challenges with Citrix so they may optimally support business continuity, workforce mobility,

information sharing, and regulatory compliance. Today, our mutual customers enjoy 35x more

bandwidth utilization and up to 48% improvements in response times when ESRI applications

are delivered through Citrix.

ESRI ArcGIS and Citrix XenApp

Citrix Delivery Center separates the user interface of an application from the processing and storage of that application. The computational and data storage functions are consolidated and centralized on servers, and the presentation layer (interface) is sent over the network to multiple users, who can view and work with the application “virtually” on any device. The user sends keystrokes and mouse clicks to the application running on the server, and receives updated screen images. Application virtualization is designed to solve the classic challenges of managing and deploying client/server applications like ArcGIS Desktop.

Citrix XenApp™ helps more than 215,000 organizations worldwide achieve higher application performance and scalability while simplifying the chores of application testing, installation, deployment, maintenance, and support.

In addition, due to the economies of scale associated with this centralized application environment, companies enjoy significant reductions in levels of IT infrastructure, maintenance, and in (TCO).

Benefits of Delivering ArcGIS on XenApp

It minimizes hardware and software upgrades.

It supports any client hardware and operating system, including Vista.

There are no desktop requirements and the client footprint is reduced by 99%.

Accelerate ArcGIS Server with Citrix NetScaler

With the consolidation of datacenters, geographic dispersion of customers, and the security concerns of using a public network; it becomes paramount for IT to employ a solution to take an application, such as ArcGIS Server, and allow it to work as if the user is local. While the webification of applications theoretically allows use by anyone, anywhere with a browser, in actuality, many hurdles must be overcome. Latency associated with worldwide employees, government offices, and businesses results in slow user/server sessions and diminished user experience. Server availability and the need for efficient redirection of user requests to appropriate resources transmit inefficiencies resulting from “chatty” protocols. The increasing trend of the perforated enterprise security may expose web servers and web-based applications to unknown attacks. With enhanced application availability, Citrix NetScaler application delivery solutions incorporate many techniques to substantially reduce response times for end users no matter where they reside. Furthermore, Citrix NetScaler provides an invaluable tool, Citrix EdgeSight™ for NetScaler, that provides transaction-level visibility of web application performance. IT administrators can now track and report on performance over time and compare current statistics with historical trends.

Optimize ArcGIS Server with Citrix WANScaler

As business operations move into the global realm, application usage originally designed to run locally must work across the WAN with no significant hit to performance, latency, or ease-of-use. Citrix WANScaler solutions provide high-performance application delivery to branch office users. WANScaler improves application performance across wide area networks (WAN) by an average of 5x to 30x, and up to 300x at peak compression efficiency. With Citrix WANScaler in the network, end users in the branch office will experience LAN-line application performance over the WAN, which means less time waiting for slow applications and more time using the application.

Improved ArcGIS Server Performance with Netscaler(Based on multi user (6 threads) domestic branch office, 1.5 Mbps, 100 ms, 1% loss.)

67.48% improvement in average transactions per hour.

21.10% improvement in average response time.

67% increase in user capacity with only 7% CPU increase.

Optimization of ArcGISServer with WANScaler

Increase user load 35x without upgrading the network.

Accelerate ESRI applications over the WAN, remote offices, and for mobile users.

It only requires 24 to 56 kbps of network connectivity.

Simplify backups by storing data centrally.

Get tightened control of sensitive documents.

ESRI has validated Citrix® NetScaler® with ArcGIS Server in our Enterprise Systems Lab and

has found that it substantially improves web application performance and overall user

experience in a typical WAN environment. NetScaler is being deployed at several ESRI

customer sites and is becoming an important addition to enterprise GIS architectures where it

is providing performance improvements, web traffic load-balancing, and a variety of other

important functions.
