PREsidENT’s MEssAgEAs we are now entering the summer season we will look forward to good weather, family get-togethers, barbe-cues with friends and perhaps a visit or two to the Cal-gary Stampede!

I’m pleased to report that as we wind down another fis-cal year at the Springbank Hill Community Association, we can look back with pride on the success we achieved over the past year. Our initiatives included successful winter ice rink seasons at our Montreux and Spring-bank Hill rinks, a wonderful adult social event and fund-raiser, community cleanup day, parade of garage sales, our children soccer and t-ball program, and the recent grand opening of our amazing new community park! Thanks to all the board members and volunteers who give up their family time to help us achieve our goals and objectives at the community association! We can-not succeed as a vibrant community association with-out the help of volunteers, so we thank those that have been so generous with their time and as always, we welcome new volunteers to join us!

We have now launched our annual membership drive. Memberships can be purchased online from our web site, springbankhill.org. Purchases made anytime after May 1st of this year will not expire until the end of our next fiscal year, August 31, 2020. If you currently hold a membership you should have received a renewal re-minder email. We invite all other community residents to support our community association with the pur-chase of a membership. Cost is only $25 per year per family. We use membership revenue to fund our small operating budget which allows us to put together our annual events and cover our operating costs for rinks, soccer and the park. Your support is appreciated.

I want to take a minute to recognize the work of two other committees at the community association. The first is our planning committee which has been very busy reviewing numerous development proposals in our community and providing feedback to the city planners and developers on behalf of our community residents. The new Area Structure Plan for our com-munity has opened the door for many new develop-ments and with the city’s desired focus on increasing densities we are holding them accountable to ensure ASP density limits are respected, infrastructure/roads needs are properly integrated into the plans and that

pedestrian friendly, community oriented, leading edge mixed use designs are adopted.

The second group is our traffic/safety committee. One of the key focus areas for this group in the past year has been road safety (they were responsible for the installa-tion of ‘iSlows’ solar speed warning signs on Springbank Blvd), and the current priority is the Southwest Ring Road project. While we welcome the much needed new ring road section, we have been liaising with Alberta Transportation as well as our MLA, Councillor, and other stakeholders to address several concerns regarding noise and dust impacts for homes backing onto the Hwy 8 stretch of road, and we continue to fight for the addition of noise barriers on the north side of Hwy 8. Re-cently Alberta Transportation has asked Enmax to mod-ify the location of their existing high-power line along the ring road route in close proximity to our commun-ity. We are deeply concerned that Enmax may choose a new route for the power line along the north side of Hwy 8 just behind the homes on the south edge of our community. We feel this option is sub-optimal for sev-eral reasons, as it appears to be significantly more ex-pensive for Enmax (resulting in higher rates passed onto to their customers), and more disruptive than other op-tions that have been identified. We also have concerns with the potential health impacts due to EMF radiation. Together with the Slopes Homeowner Association we have raised this matter with Enmax and Alberta Trans-portation and they have now committed to holding another open house to engage with our residents. Stay tuned for the details of the open house - we need your help in addressing this matter and would appreciate your attendance at the upcoming open house to be held by Enmax. See our Facebook page for more details in the coming weeks.

Have a great summer!Elio CozziPresident, Springbank Hill Community Association

We are so excited to show you a sneak peek of the Springbank Hill art wall that will be located in our new park! Art-ist, Michelle Hoogveld, has developed this amazing design and we can’t wait to see the final product. We offered an opportunity to vote on one of three designs at our adult fundraiser in May, and this was the design that the community chose! Please make sure to pop by the park and check out the new art wall! Tag Springbank Hill Com-munity Association on Facebook and Instragram if you post any pictures in front of the wall!

A community association is an organization formed by the residents of an area to:•Manage and direct its social and recreational activities;•Act as an intervener in civic matters (planning and de-

velopment); and•Plan, develop and maintain community facilities and

amenities.

A homeowner’s association is a compulsory organi-zation created by a land developer to:•Manage and maintain the “marketing” amenities (en-

trance signage, ornamental parks and ponds, boule-vard landscaping and building) of a development that

the City will not accept responsibility to maintain; and•Manage and maintain amenities such as lakes and golf

courses.Additional information on the various homeowner as-sociations located in Springbank Hill is available at the links below.•Springbank Hill Homeowners Association

Our May 10th fundraiser was an amazing success. With over 90 attendees, everyone in attendance had an amaz-ing evening networking with neighbours and friends and dancing to great music from One Nite Band.

Here is the truth, our Community Association runs on an absolute shoestring budget, so these amazing events couldn’t be possible without the support of our amazing sponsors. Here is a list of the amazing businesses in our community that stepped up to Sponsor the event:

Rockwood Custom Homes sponsored the band for our event, making it possible for the amazing One Nite Band to return for a second year and provide music for us to dance the night away! This was a major sponsorship and we’re incredibly grateful!

Ronmor Developments sponsored the dinner for our event, making it possible for our guests to enjoy a feast from Jeruselem Shwarma! Our guests loved the food and raved about all of the options! (Even vegetarian and glu-ten free!)

The Slokker Group’s sponsorship paid for our space! These events cannot happen without a great location and rentals and cleaning fees that go with the event! Thanks, Slokker for making this possible!

SBHCA Board Member, Fiona Chistiaansen with Remax Realty Professionals, sponsored our dessert from Crave Cupcakes!

SBHCA Board Member, Renée Huse of MMG Mortgages sponsored the bar/beverages for our event. After expens-es, we brought over $4500 into our community!

Renee Huse has developed this fundraising project in our community and has run the event for the last 2 years. Cur-rently, she’s seeking a team to help run the event in future years. If you’re interested in working with Renee on this project, please reach out to her at [email protected]

We hope to see you next year at our event!

When an aircraft concentrated corridor and busy flight paths suddenly appear over a community, where, and to whom, do resi-

dents turn for solutions? Aside from contacting elected representatives, there are airport authority organiza-tions that are required to engage with communities. Are these organizations effective in their community en-gagement role? Unfortunately, they have shown they are not, especially if your community is located no-where near the airport.

In Calgary we have the Airport Community Consultative Committee (ACCC), a venue for communities to con-nect with aviation groups (i.e. Calgary Airport Author-ity, NAV Canada, Transport Canada, and the airlines) to discuss concerns as well as ask questions. This commit-tee is important because currently this is the only way for communities to interact with these aviation groups on a regular basis. The Calgary Airport Authority states that the ACCC is a community-based group, but the bulk of each quarterly meeting consists of aviation in-dustry reps stating how effective the flight paths over communities are and trivializing or ignoring the overall issue many communities have with high volume air traf-fic and noise.

These meetings are also not open to any interested/af-fected Calgary resident, but restricted only to the elect-ed Boards/nominated representatives of the various Calgary Community Associations, or politically elected representatives. Calgary Signal Hill M.P., Ron Liepert, has told us that members of his staff will not attend.

The March 2019 TRAN Report, Assessing the Impact of Aircraft Noise in the Vicinity of Major Canadian Airports,

notes that there is inadequate consultation, transparen-cy, and oversight exercised by individual airport author-ities. As part of its list of recommendations, this report calls for greater transparency and enhanced public participation in any airport authority decisions or oper-ational changes which could increase noise pollution. We look forward to the implementation of this recom-mendation and a complete refocus of the ACCC into a productive partnership with Calgary communities.

What can you do to voice your concerns about the air-craft noise and volume in your community? Contact our M.P., Ron Liepert ([email protected], 403-292-6666). As a member of the TRAN Committee which produced the recent aviation noise report, he is in an important and unique position to advocate for his constituents who are affected by aircraft noise.
