He was 32. Miller had cared for the retired champion on behalf of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation for the past six years, and said that Bowl Game had experienced some trouble eating over the past week, but had been receiving intravenous nutrition and appeared bright and alert when he was turned out yesterday morning. AIt was a beautiful, sunny day and he was out in the pasture and got two-thirds of the way up the hill, and just lay down,@ said Miller, who also serves as president of the TRF. AHe was in some distress, and it was clear to us that the time had come.@ At five, Bowl Game won the GI Washington D. C. International and set a track record in the GI Turf Classic en route to his championship honors. The bay lived on Betsey Cushing Whitney=s Greentree Farm in Manhasset, New York until her death in 1998. He was taken in by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at that time, and went to live at Miller=s farm in January, 2001. AIt was just a pure delight to go out every morn- ing and be with him,@ said Miller. Bowl Game will be buried on the farm. A four-time Grade I winner for Hall of Fame trainer John Gaver Jr., he compiled a record of 23-11-6-5, earning $907,083. Breaking Up Is Hard to Do... Trainer Carl Nafzger, part of the ownership group ofhip 1446, found himself holding his breath as biddingon the attractive bay filly crossed over the $800,000

mark. AI was getting a bit nervous,@he admitted. Ultimately the biddingstopped at $850,000, a numberAright on top@ of the reserve, andNafzger and his partners held ontothe daughter of Distorted Humor, ahalf-sister to GI Breeders= Cup Juve-nile winner Street Sense. The deci-sion to retain the Mar. 28 foal wasowed to some developments in thedays following the race. AWe de-cided to keep her because we soldthe broodmare,@ the conditioner

commented. Nafzger and partners Randy Bloch, BobManfuso, John Seiler and Nafzger=s wife Wanda strucka deal earlier this week to sell Bedazzle (DixielandBand), in foal to Speightstown, to Sheikh Mohammed.Nafzger declined to disclose any further details of thedeal. The partners purchased the mare for $180,000 atlast year=s November sale. AWe really wanted to keepher, but we really didn=t want to get out of line,@ heremarked. ASince we sold the mare, we figured we=dlike to keep some of the family--that=s why we boughther. We wanted a broodmare who would produce race-horses. We just got very fortunate and her first foalwas Street Sense.@ Nafzger gave Randy Bloch=s wife,Kathy, and his wife Wanda all the credit for encourag-ing the team to keep raising the RNA amount. Thepartnership is very much looking forward to the fillyjoining the barn of Ian Wilkes in 2008. AIt was a deal, where, if we possibly could, we=d like to race thehorse,@ Nafzger explained. AShe looks a lot like StreetSense did at this time.@ Owner James Tafel, who soldBedazzle last year, still retains a female connection tothe family. He owns an Elusive Quality yearling half-sister to Street Sense that is currently in training atOcala Stud in Florida.

Reiding Between the Lines... Walnut Green=s Mark Reid knows a thing or twoabout Medaglia d=Oro, whose first weanlings haveproved popular during the opening week at Keeneland. The striking dark bay, who holds court at Richard andAudrey Haisfield=s Stonewall Farm, caught Reid=s eyewhen he was training with David Vance as a two-year-old. Following an allowance win at Oaklawn Park inFebruary 2002, Reid made owner/breeders Albert andJoyce Bell an offer they couldn=t refuse on behalf ofEdmund Gann, then sent the colt to Bobby Frankel. AGrade I winner at three, four and five and runner-up inthe G1 Dubai World Cup, the son of El Prado (Ire) re-tired to stud with earnings of $5,754,720. After gettingoutbid on a few of Medaglia d=Oro=s offspring earlier inthe sale, the bloodstock agent finally landed one yester-day, going to $220,000 for hip 1514. Consigned byThree Chimneys, agent, the bay colt was produced byDouble Trick (Phone Trick), a stakes-placed winner of$220,790. Murayama Bloodstock paid $95,000 toacquire Double Trick carrying this foal in utero at lastyear=s November sale. AHe=s a very typey-looking colt,@Reid said of his purchase. AHe=s out of an old Marylandfamily. We loved him physically, he had good vet workand he=s a big, strong physical horse like his daddy, sowe=re taking a shot.@ Medaglia d=Oro impressed Reid asa racehorse, and he gives the stallion a great shot tosucceed in the breeding shed as well. AI think he=s goingto be good sire,@ Reid offered. AThey=re very popular. For a $40,000 stud fee, I think he=s a pretty nicestarting-out sire.@

Lots to Laugh About... Taylor Made Sales Agency, consignor of the top fourmares Friday, also sent out the top-selling weanling. Hip1705, a chestnut colt by Mr. Greeley--Saintly Hertfield(Saint Ballado), was hammered down for $330,000 tothe bid of Wright Brothers Bloodstock. The colt=s dampreceded her foal into the ring and was purchased byIts Like This Stable for $330,000. She is a half to Gotthe Last Laugh (Distorted Humor), dead-heat winner ofthe GIII Arlington-Washington Breeders= Cup Futurity.
