How to flash / Phoenix flashing tutorial

We've been getting a lot of inquiries on how to flash a Nokia phone

so I decided to make a new flashing tutorial.

and not as a txt or a FAQ, but rather as a blog post.

    so...here it is

Please write anything you notice, do differently or know more "THINGS that could happen" in the comments

    I recommend Phoenix 2012.04.xxx for N8, C7, E7, X7, C6-01, E6, 700, 701, 603 & 500

    and Phoenix 2012.16.xxx for 808,

if you ever installed a higher version of Phoenix, then you must deinstall it first.

Get it and install it to Windows with your Anti-Virus OFF.

You have to trust me on this one. If you can't trust me, then stop here, because if you don't turn your anti-virus off, then you can NOT flash

If you don't believe me, then Google it, and every flashing or installation guide worldwide will tell you the same.

preferbly Delight custom firmwares, but any full set of files, for original or custom firmware will do as well

Delight cfw's files come in self-extracting .zip files, so just double click them to extract.

Extract them somewhere, where you can find them easily, for instance Desktop

"Why don't I just extract it directly to the RM folder?" because if you don't have full access configured in your computer, then extracting

stuff to C: will get denied.

the flashing folder has to BE MADE in C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\

and it is the RM Number of your phone.

    RM-XXX = Capital Letters - NO spaces

in the picture below I have N8, C7, and 808 configured

Fourth - connect phone to Phoenix

there are two ways to connect to phoenix. both are in the Phoenix main window under "Files"

First of all you need the flashing tool:

Second you need to download your files.

Third you need to put your files into the flashing folder

    - either you connect the phone first, and in the right bottom corner it will show connected. then you SCAN product

-> don't know if Scan works if you are flashing a dead phone, as I always use OPEN Product

    - or you open product manually and choose your RM-XXX Number

in this case I wanna flash my Nokia 808, so I chose RM-807

    Next step in Phoenix

    Push "Flashing" --> "Firmware Update"

    New window appears

now there are 2 ways to go about this, depending on what you want to / need to do:

    - dead flash

= your phone doesn't turn on anymore and you need to get it back to life

--> in this case, the top dropdown window should read: "NO CONNECTION" and the [ ] dead phone USB flashing should be ticked

! Update Software will not work here

    - live flash

you want to flash via Software update or refurbish and the phone is still working

--> in this case the dead phone USB flashing box can not be ticked

--> and the top dropdown window should read USBX - RM-XXX

(X stands for numbers, depending on which USB you are connected to and which phone you are flashing)

    NOTICE:

ONLY ONE FIRMWARE SET in the RM- FOLDER at once - ALWAYS ERASE OLD FILES FROM HERE FIRST

    SO...

either way the line "Product Code", "SW Version" and "Variant" must be filled now

    - if you connected live and chose your USBX, then it will be added automatically

    - if you have a dead phone, then you must push the button at the end of Line "product code" and choose the only available set

-> why only one available set? - BECAUSE I said ONLY ONE Firmware set in the RM Folder!

this is the product code and description from Delight base files.

    Before flashing:

push "OPTIONS" and you will receive this window:

in this case I am flashing a custom firmware. a custom firmware won't have the .emmc.fpsx (a.k.a. emmc) in it. Most of the time you will

only use the emmc, when flashing back to original firmware, for example when you want to sell your phone

so in my case I will click the red emmc and then push delete.

    -------------------------------------------

If you want to Update a firmware without of removing content from drive C:\, mark the file which ends with "uda.fpsx", than push delete.

This is the case if you update a Delight CFW to a higher release, check the related informations in every Delight CFW release post.

Than you should press Update Software instead of Refurbish (see next step).

    -------------------------------------------

! NEVER EVER - click any of the boxes in the flashing options window. You can't do that stuff on free versions of Phoenix.

! NO - you can NOT downgrade if clicking the first button - you can ONLY downgrade Generation^1 phones, and then you would NOT click

    that box either !!!

! If you refurbish without of UDA.fpsx your phone doesn't boot at first startup, remove the battery or with a N8 press power key for 12

    seconds, than boot.

back to the window before with OK

    then Refurbish or Update Software.

    While flashing

you will see a flash log running in the Output window

as soon as it says programming complete, it is actually done.

in some occasions, you can pull the USB now and either take battery out or on N8 you would press the power button for 12 sec, which is the

    same as battery out

    and then start the phone

    Thats it

    THINGS THAT COULD HAPPEN:

(I'll update this section always when I remember something or see something)

    1. "waiting for communication"-countdown - if you ever get the countdown, starting at 25, then pull the USB - BEFORE - it gets to "0"

    - Zero and then pull battery and then insert and start the phone - its done flashing, so it is OK the way it is.

    2. "phoenix crashed - Pheonix Dump window" - IF the phone is being flashed in the background, then DO NOT press OK in that

window, just ignore it and wait till phone flashing is done

    3. "Dongle not found" window - either your RM folder isn't named right, or it is in the wrong spot, or you do not have a "free" version

    of Phoenix

    4. Phone gets flashed, but is always original firmware - if you ever updated your phone via Nokia Suite, then the files that Nokia

Suite used could cause problems in Phoenix. SO you must go to your Computers Windows settings and tell it to show hidden folders.

then go to C:/ProgramData/Nokia/packages and delete the firmware files

you could also select the product code from the connection dropdown list after than click on file and then "Scan Product" after that

Flashing"--> Firmware Update and click on options and remove the red files next refurbish

For all those brave flashers, here's a little gift as an extra introduction from my side. It's how I set up my Phone after flashing to set

it up to minimal maintenance afterwards.

Here you go, including a few installers, an AdBlock solution OS wide, and a little readme that you should read BEFORE doing

anything the folders might indicate ;-)

but, applying the patches restrain my n8 to install any apps.how?

Eric Dempsey November 18, 2013 at 1:37 PM

you gave yourself the answer. To install apps disable patches, and then only turn on the ones you need

yeah, i know.but in the "read me" files, it's almost compulsory to able the patches he mentioned.and i've accidentally

i found out that the RunInstallServerNotForRom patch is the one causing the installation error.other patch is fine.i've

tried enabling it 1-by-1.am i a slowpoke or this really does help?

we know about that, but the patch is still needed for Developers

Charles Hinkle July 26, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Following the above steps I get RM-807 not recognized. When I go to Open Product it doesn't list my 808. In connections drop down

it does, but I get an error message after scan: Cannot load, the product "RM-807" is not recognized. ???

Eric Dempsey July 26, 2013 at 8:33 PM

then you are using an older Phoenix that doesn't have the plugin for the 808. Get it at the top of this post, by clicking on

Charles Hinkle July 26, 2013 at 8:56 PM

I downloaded the 2012.16 from the link above: 2012.16.004.48159 Thanks for you help.

Charles Hinkle July 26, 2013 at 10:39 PM

Hello Eric, I've been using the link above for my 808 and I'm still having the same problem. Any suggestions? I do have

Nokia PC suite installed, could that be part of the issue? My 808 is a stock US version using .1507 firmware. Thanks again

    for you help.

Eric Dempsey July 27, 2013 at 2:39 AM

look for me on Facebook and contact me. You would be the first that doesn't get the RM-807 on 2012.16

Eric Dempsey July 27, 2013 at 2:54 AM

or contact me at [email protected] .then we can talk about how we can message and how I can help you out

Charles Hinkle July 27, 2013 at 6:44 PM

Figured out my issue and got my 808 flashed. The process worked flawlessly for me and my 808 is running great. What I

had to do was everything you listed (of course) and then I had to change the "compatibility mode" on my PC to Windows

XP SP3. My machine is a Windows 7 64 bit OS and even with full permissions and no hidden files it would list not my

Product. Again thanks for your assistance. Delight is really great!!

    Hi Eric.

I intend using your firmware for RM-807,

but I need my language on the phone to be able to type.

Is it quite save to substitute the French PPM

(see the screenshot with Firmware update advanced options)

    with a corresponding Russian one?

Actually, I have successfully tested this approach on earlier N79 and E72,

but haven't tried it out on more recent N8 and N808.

if you are flashing with phoenix 2012.16 or 2012.24, then just get the translated rofs2 I provide with russian in it (it will

still say french in the name, but will have russian in it)

DO NOT JUST GET ANY RUSSIAN OFW PART and flash with it.... we provide all languages in the release post

    September 17, 2013 at 4:36 PM

    Hi Eric.

Thank you for your answer. Honestly, if I were more attentive, reading your descriptions, I would able to figure out the

right answer myself: your did re-partitioning of firmware components.

I have tried to setup Phoenix and Delight firmware on VirtualBox Win 7 64 bit. Needless to say, I came across the same

issue Charles Hinkle was able to tackle some time ago.

The remedy you have suggested, "compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3.", just worked fine: I installed Proenix & Delight

files "from scratch" on instant Windows XP SP 3 and Phoenix recognized the firmware files, put to Products directory.

My question to you. Did you try your tutorial on WinXP, installed on any VM?

    Regards

    Dmitry

AFAIK Phoenix won't run on Win8. You need a VM or a older Windows. And don't forget to install with your anti-virus OFF

manish kumar November 6, 2013 at 5:49 PM

Phoenix worked for me on win 8. I guess you are connecting using USB 3 ports. Try switching to USB 2 port and should

    work fine.

If you are talking about phoenix, then your phoenix is way too old. get the one in the link I posted here.

If you are talking about the RM-596 folder on your computer, then you have to make that folder yourself

Hi... :p, little help please. I had created the folder RM-596 on the designated folder then copied all the extracted files... My phone

is detected (nokia n8) but when I got into step where the Product code, SW version and variant is located, nothing is in there.

When I clicked the 3 dots.or the additional menu(for product code).. I clicked the only available option which is germany

something.. an error occured which says..Currently selected data-retrieving failed:Digital signature verification failed because

    signature file cannot be found..

    Hello Eric,

Thanks for your reply. I am sorry i did not put in an important part in my question. I am currently running belle refresh on

my N8. So should I just follow your flashing guide page? or will i have to create a backup of my applications elsewhere,

via the nokia suite or my Win 7 Explorer? I just read on a different post that I will have to backup all data using nokia

suite and not by using the phones in built back up system ... right?

Eric Dempsey November 25, 2013 at 9:33 PM

Yes, backup with inbuilt backup function and Nokia Suite. Since you are using Belle refresh, you can restore it afterwards.

At least it will work with everything, except maybe settings and data, depending on what you have on your phone.

then flash it via refurbish. restore your data and enjoy

those mods in the firmware as well.

    1. The power saving mode does not work after a restart. It does ask weather I want to deactivate power saving mode,

however it is off no matter what i select.

    2. Can we have something like a T9 dictionary editor? which can give us an interface to add words from a .txt file. Then

we can create this file on PC, save it on phone, and add all the words to the T9 dictionary in one shot.

    3. Is there any way you can create a stereo-to-mono toggle for the sound output? IT will help in getting both channels in

the left channel only, keeping the right channel off. This will be useful when using the phone while driving and listening to

    Hello Eric,

    A few more problems/questions.

    1. the Volume in headphones is WAY too loud for me. How can I get the Default levels back please?

    2. The nokia store or whatsapp messenger are giving errors whenever I try to save anything in Drive E. It looks like they

are not having write access to drive E. as they are saving perfectly when i chose the memory card instead.

    thank you.

Eric Dempsey November 27, 2013 at 12:15 AM

    1. Turn on the "Moresoundinloudspeaker " patch, it has a side effect to lower the headset volume. 2. I don't know, never

happened before. Do you have a security lock on it?

    Sanghram November 27, 2013 at 12:33 AM

    Thanks for your response Eric.

I just tried it and it makes the volume softer however also reduces the sound quality. You have mentioned renaming

defaultvolume.fpsx and then flashing. will it help getting the sound back to original volume without compromising the

    quality?

    Thanks.

Eric Dempsey November 27, 2013 at 2:28 AM

no, just renaming a file won't work. But if you are using the N8, or C7 or 500, then you can flash with the default sound

    rofs3 by extracting it

    N8 Silver November 25, 2013 at 9:08 PM

Ok thanks and even when i connect my headphone its volume low down than before how to fix this? in delight v6.0

Eric Dempsey November 25, 2013 at 9:28 PM

Eric Dempsey November 26, 2013 at 12:36 AM

easy: get v6.3 base files and language files if needed. flash via Software Update without uda (the place where you delete

the red emmc, you delete the uda)

after flash go and use Delight app, run Updater, yes to update to v6.2, yes to Update to v6.3

    done

hello, sorry for the language but I'm Italian, I have only 2 questions.

1-before flashing it is recommended that you format the phone by removing the micro sd and sim?

    2-in folder RM-807 I have to enter all two files "808 v1.2 Delight" and "Delight 808 v1.1 & v1.2 rofs2 italian"?

how do you? help me I am very much inclined to change with your custom firmware .... but I will not do stupid things .... (I state

that I have already done the flash to my 808 to enter the last original software 113.010.1508 and he went successful ..... thank you

very much in advance for the tips

    Reply

Eric Dempsey November 28, 2013 at 7:19 PM

it is not mandatory to remove Sim and Sdcard. It's also not mandatory to format E or F, which only has to be done , if a

malfunctioning install is causing problems. 2. You have to extract the Delight.exe files you downloaded. The base files

rofs2 is only english, you extract the italian one and copy it over the other one and replace when prompted. All you have

to do is read posts and tutorials, and it will be fine

    fovea1986 December 1, 2013 at 8:33 AM

thank you very much very nice ... installed perfectly, just a small problem, sometimes the red button to end the call, also

used to close applications not work, unless you are in the homescreen, pressing the button displays the menu for saving

energy , then turn off only works in that case. Why? repeat sometimes, it's a bug?

Eric Dempsey December 2, 2013 at 12:13 AM

long press to rwboot is a mod and not a bug.

Hi! I'm flashing the phone for the first time. Went through the complete guide. Now I'm stuck at the last step. After deleting the file

in red with .emmc.fpsx and clicking OK I'm left with no option to refurbish or to software update. Those options are available only if

Hi Eric. Performed a clean install of Phoenix for N8 on my Windows 7 32 bit. There's no folder Program Files (x86) on 32 bit system.

    There's indeed C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\. I created RM-596 folder and put RM-

    596_111.040.1511_02.01_Euro_2_79u_prd.rofs2.fpsx into it.

Phoenix can connect to my phone, but Firmware update dialog cannot find Product Code. When I press ... button it says "Neither

DP1.0 nor DP2.0 was found for the Product, or the Product cannot be identified."

    Reply

Eric Dempsey December 11, 2013 at 1:36 PM

the rofs2 by itself isn't enough to flash a phone

you need the rest of the files from "base files - only english files"

you put those in your RM-596 folder and then you copy your language file over that

it should be a set of 7 or 8 files when you are done

Michael Makalkin December 11, 2013 at 2:12 PM

Yes! That do the trick. Will perform real flashing when I have more time. Thanks

sounds like you did everything right. Only Problem is, you don't have all the files needed to flash. You need: *core.fpsx,

*rofs2.fpsx, *rofs3.fpsx, *uda.fpsx, a *vpl, *.bin, *Ape_eno*, and one more..... Go to mr.crab.net and get the whole

    firmware

Kingsley Ezex December 14, 2013 at 5:43 PM

i have downloaded all the 16 files in this link http://www.mrcrab.net/Nokia-Product-Code.html?ProductCode=059D7P4 and tried

again, this time around if i click flash->firmware update, in the pop up i click on the round box behind product code field i will see

pop up with this info under product code RM626, under description light_swap_eng_global and under dp ver 2.0, if i click on it it will

pop up error message 'currently selected data package retrieving failed: 0x840E0818(-2079455208) - framework: The digital

signature verification failed because the signature file could not be found.

please what are my doing wrong.

or could it be the fact that i hacked my phone with rompatch and i have uninstalled the rompatch. could that be the cause?

yes, that could be the cause . Two ways: either do a dead flash or you can hardreset the device first , and then do a live

    flash.

Are you using a computer? or a laptop? No hub, no front usb.

Are you using the phoenix I posted at the top of the page?

Was the phone hacked? Rompatcher patches OFF?

    Hello Eric.

I tried to flash my Nokia 808 with delight Delight v 1.3 and v 1.2 and a didn't manage to finish the operation. I installed Phoenix

2012.16 from the link You provided, using Windows XP SP 3 compatibility mode, antivirus off, I created the folder RM-807 in the

location You indicated and put in it the necessary files (all of them, from a single version), I turned off the antivirus and close Nokia

Suite from Task Manager, Y was able to find my phone in Connection dropdown window, USBX, than scan product (this was the only

way to do) but, when I hit Flashing/Firmware Update I couldn't find the necessary information in Product code, SW version and

Variant. I wanted to do a live flashing (not dead phone flash). I even tried to chose product code from the button aside Product

Code, I found only one product code, as You mentioned, than filled all the information needed in Firmware Update dropdown

window, after that Refurbish, but the flashing process doesn't end ; I get a message "could not initiate/enter flashing mode" or

something... I also disabled all patches from Rompatcher and even did a hard reset of the phone. This was my first flashing

attempt. Same thing happen when I tried to flash my old N8.

    Please help.

I don't know what is going wrong there. I use a Win7 and run it normally in Win7 mose. Does the phone connect to your

computer at all? Can you see it in Windows/Computer drive window? Is the phone in Nokia Suite connection mode? Did

you try a dead flash ?
